Christopher Paolini proved himself to be a master storyteller when he wrote Eragon. Now it’s time to try your own hand at an inspired creation! Write a poem (100 words or less) based on the adventures in Eragon and you could win a piece of Christopher Paolini’s original art! Your poem can be written in any style you like, including—but not limited to—a ballad (a narrative poem that can also be sung), a limerick (a five-line rhyming poem), or an acrostic poem (a series of verses in which the first letters of each line combine together to form a word).

Enter by printing your name, date of birth, parent’s/guardian’s name, full address, and phone number on either an 8.5 x 11 piece of paper or an online printout entry at www.alagaesia.com and in 100 words or less write a poem based on the characters or adventures found in Eragon in any style you like, including but not limited to a ballad (a narrative poem that can also be sung), a limerick (a five-line rhyming poem) or an acrostic poem (a series of verses in which the first letters of each line combined together form a word) that is inspired by Eragon. LIMIT ONE ENTRY PER FAMILY. Partially completed or illegible entries will not be accepted. Sponsors will not responsible for lost, late, mutilated, llegible, stolen, postage-due, incomplete, or misdirected entries. All entries become the property of Random House and will not be returned, so please keep a copy for your records. ELIGIBILITY Contest is open to legal residents of the United States and legal residents of Canada, excluding the Province of Quebec, who are 12 years of age or older as of December 31, 2004. All federal, state, and local laws and regulations apply. Void wherever prohibited or restricted by law. Employees of Random House Inc. and their parent companies, assigns, subsidiaries or affiliates, and advertising, promotion, and fulfillment agencies; their immediate family members, and persons living in their household are not eligible to enter this Contest. PRIZES There will be one (1) grand-prize winner and twenty (20) runners-up selected. Grand-prize winner will win an original piece of art from Christopher Paolini. The grand-prize winner will also receive a signed copy of Eragon and a signed advance copy of Eldest. (Approximate retail value $1,000.00 US). Twenty (20) runners-up will win a signed advanced copy of Eldest, Book Two in The Inheritance Trilogy. (Approximate retail value $20.00 US). If for any reason the prizes are not available or cannot be fulfilled, Random House Inc. reserves the right to substitute a prize of equal or greater value, including, but not limited to, cash equivalent. Taxes, if any, are the winner’s sole responsibility. Prizes are not transferable and cannot be assigned. No prize or cash substitutes allowed, except at the discretion of the sponsor as set forth above. WINNERS The winners will be chosen on or around January 31, 2005, from all eligible entries received by the Random House Marketing Department within the entry deadline. Entries will be judged by Christopher Paolini and the Random House Marketing Department staff, whose decisions are final, and the prize will be awarded on the basis of originality, style, and creativity. The prizes will be awarded in the name of the winners’ parent or legal guardian if winners are under 18. Winners or winners’ parent or legal guardian will be notified by mail and winners or winners’ parent/legal guardian will be required to sign and return affidavit(s) of eligibility and release of liability within 14 days of notification. A noncompliance within that time period or the return of any notification as undeliverable will result in disqualification and the selection of an alternate winner. In the event of any other noncompliance with rules and conditions, prize may be awarded to an alternate winner. Winners will be notified by mail on or about February 15, 2005. Taxes, if any, are the winner’s sole responsibility. Random House reserves the right to substitute prizes of equal or greater value if prizes, as stated above, become unavailable. RESERVATIONS By participating, winners (and winners’ parent/legal guardian) agrees that Random House, Inc. and their parent companies, assigns, subsidiaries or affiliates, advertising, promotion, fulfillment agencies, and suppliers will have no liability whatsoever, and will be held harmless by winners (and winners’ parent/legal guardian) for any liability for any injuries, losses, or damages of any kind to person, including death, and property resulting in whole or in part, directly or indirectly, from the acceptance, possession, misuse, or use of the prize, or participation in this contest. By entering the Contest the winners’ parent or legal guardian consents to the use of the winners’ name, likeness, and biographical data for publicity and promotional purposes on behalf of Random House, Inc. with no additional compensation or further permission (except where prohibited by law). Other entry names will NOT be used for subsequent mail solicitation.
