QUEER SCREEN PROGRAM LAUNCH & 'ANY DAY NOW' SCREENING

Next Wednesday you can be the first to see our 2014 Mardi Gras Film Festival lineup, and enjoy a great film at the same time. We're screening the wonderful ANY DAY NOW, thanks to Pinnacle Films, starring the charismatic superstar Alan Cumming (X-MEN 2, GOLDENEYE, THE GOOD WIFE, and THE L WORD). Everyone in attendance will also be able to take home a copy of the 2014 program before it is published in the Sydney Star Observer. ANY DAY NOW is inspired by a true story from the late 1970s and touches on legal and social issues that are as relevant today as they were 35 years ago. When a teenager with Down Syndrome is abandoned by his mother, a gay couple takes him in and becomes the loving family he's never had. But when their unconventional living arrangement is discovered by authorities, the men are forced to fight a biased legal system to save the life of the child they have come to love as their own. ANY DAY NOW is a powerful tale of love, acceptance and family. "Alan Cumming gives the performance of his career." FILM 4 ANY DAY NOW Directed by Travis Fine, UK WED, JAN 15, 6:45PM, EVENT CINEMAS GEORGE STREET View the trailer now. MGFF14 Flexi passes & Pink Passes are eligible for this screening. FRIENDS OF DOROTHY

One of the big events of Mardi Gras Film Festival 2014 will be the World Premiere of FRIENDS OF DOROTHY, exploring Sydney's gay history through the photos of William Yang. Your ticket, which is a fundraiser for ACON, includes the film, an after party, and a ticket to Bingay. William Yang has been a constant, smiling presence in Sydney’s LGBT community for four decades, observing and capturing the swirling social whirl around him with the quiet skill of a wildlife photographer. More than any other artist, his photographs have faithfully chronicled the history and character of queer Sydney’s people, places…and parties! Featuring more than 650 of his own photographs, and his trademark understated narration, Yang tells his personal tales. As our tour guide, William takes us through the history of Sydney’s queer community - from the gay underground of the late 60s to the beginnings of the Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras, the AIDS crisis of the 80s, the party scene of the 90s and beyond. Produced by Felix Media, in association with ACON and School of the Arts and Media, UNSW. BUY TICKETS

CAMP BEAVERTON: MEET THE BEAVERS is a very fun and intimate ride. This glimpse into the world of 'The Beavers' during their annual trip to the epic Burning Man festival in Nevada is perfect viewing for a great girls night out. A film full of sex, drama, and sand, that you're sure to love. Filmmakers Beth Nelsen and Ana Grillo ventured into the desert for Burning Man, living within 'The Beavers' community and interviewing the women on their experiences and their lives. Beaver events included play parties, clit-tail social hours and educational workshops to the infamous Strap-on-a-thon, the largest play party for women anywhere on the planet. The result is a fun, positive and intimate documentary on life within the madness of the world's most offbeat festival.

If you're looking for the most delightful film around, we've found it in WILL YOU STILL LOVE ME TOMORROW. This is a much loved comedy-drama from Taiwan, guaranteed to leave you smiling, and crying, in your cinema seat. After successfully playing at the Berlin, Tribeca, Frameline, and Melbourne International Film Festivals we're bringing the film to Sydney for one night only - so don't miss out on this crowd favourite. Weichung used to be gay. Now he is in a dedicated and devoted marriage to his body-clock driven wife, but as the marriage starts crumbling he realises that he's never been happier. A cute man has him floating on air, literally, and is finally returning the spring to his step. Meanwhile, his sister thinks the boy from her favourite soap opera has come to life - and she thinks he gives great relationship advice. Will a group of Weichung’s gay friends be able to save his sister’s marriage and help him come back out of the closet again? This film combines magic realism with melodrama to create the most surprising film around.

"Charming, hilarious, touching and unashamedly frank" - Twitch "While the film maintains its sense of humour throughout, writer/director Arvin Chen takes care to keep his nerve in terms of the tough questions of sexuality and commitment and identity." - Russell Edwards, SBS BUY TICKETS

CONCUSSION

CONCUSSION is an electrifying and engaging film that examines the universal idea of a 'midlife crisis' and the loss of passion in long-lasting relationships. We're betting CONCUSSION will be one of the most talked about films of the festival, and is the perfect anti-valentines day film for singles and couples alike. Abby is a bored forty-something, living comfortably as a wealthy, suburban housewife married to Kate. After suffering a mild concussion, she begins to question if there is more to her mundane and passionless life. Taking on a project in Manhattan away from her family and routine, Abby (Robin Weigert, DEADWOOD's Calamity Jane) begins to feel desirable again. After some encounters with other women, she begins a double life as a high-end escort exclusively for female clientele. CONCUSSION Directed by Stacie Passon FRI, FEB 14, 9.30PM, EVENT CINEMAS GEORGE STREET "Concussion, hands down one of the sexiest movies of the year" - Kerensa Cadenas, Indiewire "A landmark lesbian movie, the carnal Concussion, a recent commercial screening of which sent two elderly spectators careening out of the theater during an especially sensual sequence, suggests that the depiction of lesbian pleasure continues to wield a transgressive power." - Noah Tsika, Huffington Post BUY TICKETS

PORTRAIT OF JASON

The recently restored PORTRAIT OF JASON must be seen to be believed. This extraordinary documentary from 1967 is widely recognised as Shirley Clarke's masterpiece, and comes highly recommended from the Queer Screen team. This is a rare chance to see one of cinema's most intriguing characters come alive on screen in a way that none before, or since, have managed. "The most extraordinary film I've seen in my life is certainly PORTRAIT OF JASON. It is absolutely fascinating" - Ingmar Bergman Like a life drawing, Shirley Clark sheds the feather scarfs and tobacco smoke to bring to light the soul of this hustler and cabaret performer. By giving us snippets of a 12-hour interview, she transparently portrays James as no director has done before. Tragedy unfolds and tension builds however, and the audience can see that this method of filmmaking is raw, volatile and powerful. PORTRAIT OF JASON Directed by Shirley Clarke, USA SAT, FEB 22, 4PM, EVENT CINEMAS GEORGE STREET

"By the end of the long night's shoot, Clarke knew she had captured one of the most involving, uncompromising and revelatory human documents in the history of cinema." - Stuart Klawans, The Nation

Australia's Miranda Otto shines in this sultry and seductive biopic of famous poet Elizabeth Bishop, who escaped New York to find inspiration in the heart of Rio de Jaineiro's Bossa Novan culture. While there, she is drawn into a tempestuous relationship with architect Lota de Macedo Soares, where they are tested by jealousy, separation and military coups. The powerful performance of the two leading ladies, combined with superb cinematography, captures the spirit of these seminal artists. READ MORE AND BUY TICKETS
