How could you improve or implement peer tutoring in your institution? What opportunities are there?
Who needs to be involved?
Who can help you?
How will you fund it?
What opposition can you anticipate, and how will you overcome it?
Some ideas…
One of our activities…. Group five briefing sheet ◦ Please explain the task to the other groups ◦ A group of senior clinicians are appalled to hear that junior students are taught clinical skills by more senior students. They make representations to the Principal and are given time in the next meeting to argue their case. ◦ You will be assigned to a viewpoint – pro or anti peer tutoring. Using the materials provided please research your case in groups and be prepared to debate the topic in what promises to be a very heated meeting. ◦ Assign your colleagues into pro or anti groups and hand out research materials. ◦ Allow 15 minutes for research then chair the meeting. ◦ During research time, plan how you will chair the meeting and debate and how you will bring about a consensus view. ◦ The debate should be concluded within 30 minutes.
And so Should we be using peer tutors? Are we creating additional advantage for students who have already experienced educational privilege?
Devil’s advocates welcome…..
