people first 2009 Report on Philanthropic Investment

Dear Friends,

Margot James Copeland Executive Vice President, KeyBank Chair, KeyBank Foundation

Putting people first is KeyBank’s promise. For the many families and individuals who benefit from Key’s philanthropic efforts, this promise means that economic self-sufficiency is more than a dream. Every year, our investments in community-focused programs and services make a genuine difference, and 2009 was no exception. The investments we make come in many forms, and are not limited to the monetary realm. They also come from the hands and hearts of our employee volunteers, whose spirit of community resonates within our organization and reflects the values that drive our efforts at every level. Together, we are dedicated to helping build stronger communities – and to improving the lives of the people we call neighbors, in the places we call home. It’s all part of our promise to put people first.

our mission The KeyBank Foundation, through civic programs, grants, and the efforts of our employee volunteers, supports organizations that foster economic self-sufficiency.

Strategic Giving Our philanthropic efforts are guided by an overarching strategic plan, which focuses on providing grants in three areas that are of crucial importance to fostering economic self-sufficiency in the communities we serve: Financial Education – Understanding the basics of money management is essential to personal financial stability. Key financial education initiatives provide instruction in skills such as balancing a checkbook, implementing a savings goal, and reducing personal debt. Workforce Development – A significant part of our philanthropic giving is directed to organizations that offer career-placement guidance and job-training skills. Key supports programs that assist individuals who are entering the workforce for the first time, reentering the workforce, or enhancing their job skills to advance in their chosen careers. These programs afford those individuals the opportunity to lead more stable and job-secured lives, while helping to strengthen the community.

Matching Gift Program Key’s Matching Gift Program empowers Key employees to help direct our philanthropic investments. We match qualifying employee donations dollar for dollar, to an established threshold. In 2009, employee donations and KeyBank Foundation matching gifts totaled nearly $975,000. Community Leadership Grant Program The Community Leadership Grant Program recognizes the contributions of our employees. As a part of this program, the KeyBank Foundation provides annual grants to the nonprofit organizations our employees serve. In 2009, community leadership grants totaled $385,500.

Diversity – Key believes that workforce diversity and equal opportunity are essential to the well-being of our society. We support organizations that foster an environment in which people can succeed regardless of age, gender, race, religion, or sexual orientation. Key is committed to strategic workforce development, economic inclusion, market growth, and superior service delivery.

Key in the Community At Key, community engagement is at the very heart of our culture – and our commitment reaches well beyond the realm of monetary giving. Key employees make significant contributions to our communities in their roles as volunteers and civic leaders. In 2009, our employees served on the boards of over 1,500 nonprofit organizations.

People Who Enjoy Helping People Key employees give generously of their time and talent. Neighbors Make the Difference Day® is but one example of how our 16,200 employees work together as volunteers. From Maine to Alaska, Key employees help deserving members of our communities through a wide range of projects. In 2009, 50% of our employees participated in Neighbors Make the Difference Day. This was the highest rate of employee participation in the nineteen-year history of the event. Another Way to Give In 2009, KeyCorp donated over $139,000 in gently used office furniture and supplies to qualifying nonprofit organizations. Donations ranged from an entire branch building, which was given to a community development corporation, to supplies of staplers, paperclips, and calculators that went to schools and social service agencies.
