MANAGER’S

We have been pleased to work with our local Pharmacies, Rivermead in Copthorne and Kamsons in Poundhill, on the Minor Ailments services that they are able to provide to our patients. A full description can be found in this newsletter and will help a lot of patients who do not necessarily need to see a doctor but will require some medication.

RACTICE CORNER

Newsletter July 2011

From the Practice Manager and Friends of the Pound Hill Medical Group We would like to thank everyone concerned helping to make the two Patients Information Open Events held in May at Pound Hill and in June in Copthorne such an overwhelming success. We are most grateful

to all the

“professionals” who attended at both venues

A huge thanks to our Friends of Pound Hill Medical who organised two Open Information Events in Copthorne and Poundhill in May and June. Please keep an eye out for future events that will be designed to help educate the community in the services available to them. Finally, just a reminder that although we are all enjoying the blast of sun at the moment, it is important to take care of your skin and ensure you, and your children use sun cream. We seem to be enjoying more and more nice summers at the moment but along with this is a national rise in the number of skin cancers. If you would like further information please refer to NHS Direct website: www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk

Perry Anderson

Practice Manager

to provide superb information and advice for the benefit of our patients. The only slight disappointment was that more patients did not feel inclined to take the advantage presented by the two special patient events. Those who did avail themselves of the opportunity to come, complimented the Practice and Friends for organising these

special information

events. At present we are considering possible future events based on specific

medical

matters which may be of direct interest to patients. Please let us know if you are interested in such future events and any particular topics which you consider to be useful to include.

RESEARCH FOR THE NEXT GENERATION There is a department at Pound Hill Surgery which is dedicated to medical research. It is led by Dr Litchfield and Dr Jackson with the help of Beth Dyson, clinical trials assistant. Studies vary tremendously from observational projects to short term use of a new medication to longer term research following patients with various conditions for many years but all aim to help with the development of treatment. Some examples of previous work include Lansoprazole for heartburn, “statins” for heart protection, Salmeterol and Fluticasone for asthma and the HPV vaccine. We complete all clinical trials under protocols set by pharmaceutical companies and are overseen by independent ethics committees. We are presently recruiting patients for the SORT study – for patients with knee arthritis and requiring pain relief, TECOS and LANSCAPE all improving diabetic control and AMPHORE looking into the differences in asthma symptoms and disease behaviour in people with asthma. We are very grateful to the patients who give their time and commitment to help with medical research. If you want to take part or would like more information please contact Beth on 0844 477 1816, [email protected] or leave your name at reception and we will give you a call.

Do you have Osteoarthritis of the Knee? Research volunteers are needed for an observational study looking at the standard care and treatments of patients with osteoarthritis of the knee(s). You will not be required to take any additional study medication to participate in this study. To participate you MUST: 

Be 50 years or older

Have osteoarthritis of the knee(s) and be taking pain medication For more information please contact: Beth Dyson – 0845 477 1816 [email protected]
