Whoever wants to investigate the major challenges for society has to be immersed in the best environment from the off: outstanding education, inspiring surroundings and a professional kit. You can find all this at the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research – UFZ. We offer exciting research topics, excellent supervision, solid structures, interdisciplinarity and an optimal, subject-specific and general qualification at the UFZ Graduate School HIGRADE – the best requirements to kick start a successful career.

The department of Analytical Environmental Chemistry is offering a position for a

PhD student (m/f) Code-digit 118/2012 PhD thesis: „Equilibrium sorption of organic ions to selected proteins“ The position will be available starting from October 1, 2012 for duration of 36 months. Work description The exposure of organisms to chemicals via food or water may lead to acute or chronic toxic effects. Our understanding of the partitioning of neutral organic chemicals in organisms is already rather advanced. In contrast, little is known about the sorption of organic ions to biological tissues. In this work we want to conduct systematic experimental work on the equilibrium sorption of a variety of organic ions to various proteins. This involves analytical work with HPLC as well as the search for model concepts that will help to interpret the measured data. Prerequisites for candidates • Scientific enthusiasm • high interest in experimental and analytical work • strong motivation to complete a PhD Expected backgrounds • master/diploma degree in analytical organic chemistry, food pharmaceutical chemistry, environmental chemistry or related subjects • good English proficiency • willingness to work in an international group

chemistry,

We offer excellent supervision in a motivated team that works on new concepts for a better understanding of chemicals in the environment.
