PhD Winter School The PhD Winter School is focused on sharing comprehensive understanding of the interrelation existing among WEF Nexus (Water, Energy and Food), with the aim at educating researchers towards new thinking over sustainable solutions. The project partners are all universities with a strong background in both research and the relevant fields - making each contribution vital to the progression of TriNex project. Four of the universities are in Europe - the other four are in Egypt. While the Egyptian universities will handle the project’s immediate environment, the European institutes shall provide their invaluable expertise and experience, especially in terms of training the researchers. The partners are as follows:        

Politecnico di Milano (Italy) RWTH Aachen University (Germany) Graz University of Technology (Austria) Montpellier SupAgro (France) Alexandria University (Egypt) Cairo University (Egypt) Heliopolis University for Sustainable Development (Egypt) The American University in Cairo (Egypt)

The school will provide the applicants with the “know-how” and support them with the latest practices and technologies in the area of water, energy and food. It will give special attention to hands-on project activities that enable the participants to implement the theories they gain and foster team and interdisciplinary cooperation between people from different backgrounds.

Learning Programmes: The PhD Winter School program will develop Euro-Egyptian mechanism to strengthen the cooperation in the WEF-Nexus between junior researchers from different countries. The applicants will have the opportunity to enrich their knowledge in the WEF Nexus through number of sessions provided by the local and international partners.

Work plan The PhD Winter School will focus on sharing comprehensive understanding of the interrelation existing among WEF Nexus (Water, Energy and Food), with the aim at educating researchers towards new thinking over sustainable solutions. The PhD Winter School content is designed by our four international partners; Politecnico di Milano, RWTH Aachen University, Graz University of Technology and Montpellier SupAgro, who will provide the applicants with the “know-how” and support them with the latest practices and technologies in the area of water, energy and food. The winter school will give special attention to hands-on project activities that enable the participants to implement the theories they gain and foster team and interdisciplinary cooperation between people from different backgrounds. The applicants will attend number of sessions related to the WEF Nexus area. These sessions will be followed by roundtable discussions, where the applicants will be divided into teams and

work closely to provide sustainable solutions relevant to the WEF. The output of this work, will be presented as “Research Posters” during TriNex International Conference by the end of the school in Alexandria, Egypt.

What we look for:    

PhD student and recent PhD graduate in any of WEF (Water/Energy/Food) related field. Willing to extend their knowledge about the WEF Nexus and interdisciplinary research Motivated to engage with integrated approaches and system thinking with an excellent communications skills Are able to understand English effectively and are able to communicate clearly and accurately in spoken and written English

Certification Participants will receive a certificate from the four European universities at the end of the school, stating that they have successfully participated. To receive this certificate, participants have to be present in all sessions over the ten days
