Meet the Client Rosemary Bandini Rosemary had experienced persistent backache for some time before starting One- 2- One sessions with Marcia two years ago, and had stopped working out at the gym because of the discomfort. Rosemary says that she saw a marked improvement within a month and now incorporates Pilates into her daily life, which involves extensive business travel, to help prevent her back problems recurring. Rosemary lives in Chigwell and is a renowned expert on antique Japanese netsuke and inro. She has just set up her new company, Rosemary Bandini Limited, buying and selling fine Japanese works of art.

Ballet Beautiful Half Roll-backs A recent article in The Times featured extracts from a new book, Ballet Beautiful by Mary Helen Bowers. A former dancer, Mary has worked with many celebrities including Natalie Portman for her role in Black Swan. She sets out an exercise plan to help you to achieve a dancer's long, toned body shape and elegant posture. We were intrigued to see that Pilates exercises feature strongly in the regime, particularly those that target abdominal core strength such as this variation on the half roll- back. Sit with your legs extended hip- width apart, knees slightly bent. Extend your arms out wide and sit straight with the top of your head reaching toward the ceiling. Breathe in and engage. tucking your pelvis underneath you. Breathe out and roll back by 30 degrees pulling your stomach in strongly. From here, lean back slightly further and retur n, working deep into your abdominal muscles, repeating eight times before rolling back up to your starting position. Try three sets but do ensure your head, neck and shoulders are relaxed and stop immediately if you start to feel strain in your back.
