FACTSHEET

Materials and Installation The materials from which your premises are constructed may determine the speed with which a fire may spread, affecting the escape routes that people will use. To be effective and perform the function for which they were specified, fire doors and screens must conform to BS 476 part 22 1987 (BS 476 part 22 1987 - Fire tests on building materials and structures). Fire doors alllow access to protected escape routes, both vertically and horizontally, without any loss of fire resistance. Every fire door is required to act as a barrier to the passage of smoke and/or fire to varying degrees dependent upon its location in a building and the fire hazard associated with the building. •

A fire door is to provide resistance to the passage of a well developed fire and consequently requires intumescent strips to be installed.

Secondly to prevent excessive quantities of cold smoke to pass in the early stages of a fire and then to provide a barrier to a well-developed fire. They need to be fitted with intumescent strips and cold smoke seals to achieve this aim.

The principles of fire safety and firefighting in the UK are based on containment of the fire within a compartment. Compartmentalization of buildings to limit the spread of fire is only effective with correctly installed fire doors. The reliability and performance of correctly specified fire-resisting doors can be undermined by inadequate installation. A correct installation must comply with BS8214:2008 and accredited by a certified fire scheme such as UKAS (The United Kingdom Accreditation Service)
