Give To The Max November 14th is Give to the Max Day. This is your opportunity to give a little extra support to Urban Arts Academy. Your gift, in any amount, provides many families in our community with affordable access to quality preschool and afterschool arts enrichment programs. Thanks!

Welcome Gretchen! We are so excited to welcome Gretchen Gallagher Weinstein as our new Preschool Program Director. Gretchen will work closely with JoAnne Peters, Preschool Administrative Director, to support teachers and families at Urban Arts Academy Preschool. Here is what Gretchen has to say about herself: "Hello, my name is Gretchen Gallagher Weinstein. I come to Urban Arts Academy with a background in Music and the Arts. I am a Board Certified Music Therapist, and specialize in working with children of all abilities. I have a lot of experience in Early Childhood classroom teaching, as well as the administrative aspect that goes along with it. I love to incorporate music, literature, play and cooking into my teaching. I am excited to join Urban Arts and use my experiences to support the teachers in their lessons. When I am not at Urban Arts, I enjoy spending time with my husband and our dog, Max. I like to read, sing, knit, try new recipes, and watch sports."

Keith Haring The work of Keith Haring features simplified "comic" forms and often playful content. Haring was a dynamic New York artist during the 1980's and he used his unique graphic images to create children's books and raise money for AIDS organizations. This month, we're using Haring's bright, bold images to make paper bodies that move, trace our own bodies and make graphic clay creations. While Haring's work is 2-dimensional, it is a fun follow-up to the soundsuits of Nick Cave we explored last month. Both of these artists give us a chance to learn about ourselves, our bodies and bright, vibrant colors. In December we will explore the work of Faith Ringgold, a painter and textile artist who has authored and illustrated a number of books for children. In addition to our art work this month, we've begun our Letter Of The Week program. Each week a different letter is featured during circle time and art activities. Children are also using sketchbooks to practice their letters and prewriting skills. By the end of the year, we will have given each letter a moment in the spotlight and will wrap up with a celebration of the ABC's just in time for Preschool Graduation.

Dressing for Outdoor Play You can help your child learn to be independent by helping them prepare their winter gear when they arrive. Help your child put their mittens and hat in the sleeve of their coat so they can grab their coats and get ready when outdoor playtime comes. Also, don't forget to LABEL everything! There are a lot of black snowpants out there. Thanks for your help!

Preschool Potluck Our first preschool potluck of the year is right around the corner. Join us on Tuesday, November 26th from 5:00-6:30 pm for food, families and fun! For families who pick up at 4:30pm, the basement gym will be open from 4:30-5:00pm. Children are welcome to use the gym during this period with adult supervision. Look for the potluck sign up sheet in the hall beginning next week. Please bring a nut-free item to share. Families are encouraged to bring their own plates, cups and cutlery to reduce the amount of waste we create. A dishwashing station will be available. At the Potluck you will have a chance to share a meal with classmates and teachers, hear the children perform a song in Spanish and see a display of student art. Our Preschool Directory will also be available. If you have any questions about the potluck, just let us know!

classroom. If you're interested in a morning, afternoon or full day, let us know. We have a few spots open for new students. If you have friends or family who would like to join us, let us know!

We'd like to thank our current parent volunteer, Jayanthi Kyle for leading music circles each Thursday! Jayanthi is a talented vocalist and the children just love her weekly visits. Any parents who have interest in serving as a parent representative on our Board of Directors can contact Gretchen at [email protected]. The UAA Board meets nine months per year on Thursday evenings. We are in particular need of Board Members with backgrounds in Development. Parent input is also requested to help us make important decisions about next year's preschool program. By early December, you will receive a Survey Monkey email asking for your thoughts on the preschool program - from scheduling to mixed age classrooms. When the survey comes your way, please take a few moments to share your thoughts. Your opinions are important to us!
