An organization vigilant for Environment

Mission: To build a strong and self sustained organization working for the cause of Environment.. Vision: To empower the youth to accept challenges of changing world in tune to the sustainable development………

Municipal Solid Waste Management Project ƒ Garbage mounds rotting in the streets create an unhygienic environment for a city’s inhabitants ƒ The gravity of the problem is increasing rapidly in Metropolitan cities in particular ƒ This is mainly due to massive migration of people form rural to urban regions ƒ Ever-increasing population is causing an overburden upon the basic amenities including solid waste management

Municipal Solid Waste Management Project ƒ A UN Report of 1995 states that 40 percent of the India’s total population will be clustered in the Indian cities by the year 2025 ƒ Thus Urban India is on the brink of massive Waste Disposal Crisis ƒ MSW Management Rules of 2004 are barely enough even to maintain a system of waste collection and disposal

One Person’s garbage is another person’s poison ! ƒ Dealing with e-waste is becoming a major problem in the Indian cities ƒ E-waste consists of old computers, television sets, refrigerators, electrical equipments and mobile phones ƒ Developed countries produce tonnes of these wastes every year and ship these out to developing countries for disposal ƒ E-waste contains several hazardous and toxic materials like lead, mercury, cadmium, antimony, PVC plastics and PCBs

E-waste…………. ƒ All these components are extremely dangerous to the human health and to the environment ƒ Tonnes of e-waste is landing along the Indian ports every year for recycling ƒ Most of these are coming from the European countries, especially from the Britain and also form the US

E-waste.. What is inside your PC that weighs about 27 kg..! ƒ ƒ ƒ ƒ ƒ ƒ ƒ ƒ ƒ

Plastics: 6.26kg Lead: 1.7kg Silica: 6.8 kg Aluminium: 3.86 kg. Iron: 5.58 kg Copper: 1.91 kg Nickel: 0.23 kg Zinc: 0.6 kg Tin: 0.27 kg

Municipal Solid Waste Management Project ƒ The most important aspect of MSW management is the community participation ƒ Common people are the generators of the waste and need to be made aware of health hazards of mismanaged MSW ƒ Enviro-Vigil is trying hard in this area of awareness creation

Municipal Solid Waste Management Project ƒ For this, mass rallies and door-to -door campaigns are organized with the help of school and college students ƒ Results have been quite encouraging ƒ People are slowly waking up and trying to manage their own waste to certain extent ƒ Enviro-Vigil is providing technical expertise free of cost to the residential complexes to take care of their waste
