Enduring Understandings = BIG IDEAS OF UNIT Complex Idea Students will understand the underlying causes of WWI included the Alliance system, militarism, nationalism, imperialism and the crises in Africa and Bosnia. Students will understand that technological innovations in warfare led to a “total war” Students will understand that the resolution of World War I laid the foundation for World War II. Students will understand that the Russian Revolution was the result of multiple causes, the role of World War I in the Revolution, and the short term and long term consequences of the Russian Revolution.
Simplified Idea – You think about this There were 4 MAIN causes to WWI (militarism, alliances, imperialism, and nationalism) – all linked together to create a war that killed millions and was fought around the world. With machines it got easier to kill each other everywhere and non-stop. Also people back home had to use machines to make the war machines. Because the end of the war created an unfair situation it caused anger and countries had the tendency to seek easy answers that had bad results. Russia adopted communism because the people thought it would fix their problems. It did not but many people around the world also thought it might by eliminating private property. This caused the period from 1917-1991 to focus a lot on the fight between communism supported from the USSR (Russia) and capitalism supported from the US and Western Europe.

Why was World War I a “World” War?
What correlation exists between war and technology? [How do machines change how we fight each other? Examples?]
