rom everyone here at NRHS V-Twin Performance, please accept our sincerest thanks for requesting our new catalog. A lot has changed since our last catalog went to print in the winter of 2003. The XL model line is all new with available Buell top-end and rubber mounting, Buell returned to stock 1203cc displacements with the XB12 line, and the performance aftermarket has continued to innovate at a breakneck pace.

Inside you'll find the very best performance products developed in these last two years, as well as many that have stood the test of time since NRHS opened its doors back in 1998. As the American V-Twin community has grown, so too has NRHS. We've continually added and adapted our product line and machine services to help insure that you, our valued customers, not only have the quickest bike around, but that you built it right the first time, and got it at a fair price.

Whoever said lightning can't strike in the same place twice must not have seen our CNC-ported cylinder heads. Our Fadal 4020 4-Axis Vertical Machining Center cuts every port to within 1/10,000th of an inch of tolerance every time we press go and set it loose on yet another lucky stiff’s heads. So what, right? How does that make for a better set of heads for your bike? Simply put, great heads come from great science, and once you've got a handle on that science the trick is figuring out how to replicate it. Hand porting is an art to be sure, and we still put the old Dremel tool to good use on special app lication and oneoff race heads, but for the number of street performance heads we see, consistency and repeatability became our number one goal s. CNC porting allows us to reproduce our best port designs perfectly, over and over, every time. No eye-balling it, no giving it the old “good enough.” Not now, not ever.

CNC-FLEX - When second best isn't good enough, accept no substitutes

So standard CNC porting is ultra-precise and completely efficient, and for most shops that would have been enough, but the first question we asked was, “how can we make it better?” While consistency is one of the main strengths of CNC porting, it's also the main weakness, because it doesn't lend itself well to adaptation. Unless the set of heads being ported is going into the exact set-up as the CNC model heads were developed for, the porting will be good, but still less than a perfect fit. It would be like trying to fit a dozen people into the same pair of shoes. For some they'd be too small, for others too big and only for a very few would they be a proper fit. This is due largely to the fact that an engine's airflow requirements vary greatly with its bore, stroke, and rpm, and changing any of these parameters causes a change in port velocity unless you also change the heads to match. Port velocity is completely critical to where, when and how much power your engine has the potential to make. Solving this problem was a challenge of mountainous proportions, and took some innovative engineering, resulting in the NRHS exclusive process that we call CNC-FLEX. Standard on all Stage III cylinder heads, CNC-FLEX is An XB head receives the NRHS CNC an advanced program that mathematically alters key treatment. Each port is cut at multiple dimensions of the CNC port profile to custom tailor the angles for optimal matching to the model port size and shape. profile to your specific application. The operator enters the engine bore & stroke, rpm of the torque peak, cam timing specs, and the valve sizes. CNC-FLEX uses this information in conjunction with the digitized port data to calculate the ideal port size, and then generates a custom porting program. The result of all this technology is a combination of the quality and performance offered by CNC porting with the custom capability of hand porting. The best of both worlds, and NRHS is the only shop on the planet with anything like it.

Cylinder Heads

STAGE 1

T

he NRHS Stage 1 CNC-ported cylinder head is for the performance enthusiast who wants a noticeable increase in horsepower and torque without having to take a second mortgage on the house to get it. The first step is to thoroughly inspect and clean the heads to ensure that there are no cracks

or flaws. If the heads have been previously run, all valve spring pressures are checked through the full range of motion and are replaced if necessary. All valves are then inspected for straightness and then re-faced to optimize flow around the valve head area. The intake and exhaust ports are then reshaped, removing only the absolutely necessary amount of material, to optimize flow and velocity for the ultimate in torque and horsepower. All porting is done utilizing our Fadal 4020 4-axis Vertical Machining Center, and every set of heads is verified perfect on our state-of-the-art Superflow bench equipped with Flocom microprocessor, intake and exhaust airspeed diagnostic probes, and Winflow graphics software. The valve job consists of a proprietary profile specific to NRHS, optimized for both flow and heat dissipation. The combustion chambers are blended into the seats in such a way as to promote both laminar transition around the valve seat and maximum turbulence and swirl characteristics within the chamber. The head surface area is flat-milled to ensure an absolutely flat gasket surface and to correct for the small amount of material removed during the blending process. The heads are then re-cleaned and assembled with all valve spring installed heights within .005 in. of one another, keeping valve train harmonics to a minimum. Finally, the heads go back on the flow bench one last time to ensure that the front and rear-head flow numbers are within 1.5%-2% of each other to ensure proper cylinder balance and ease of tuning. Careful, detailed records are kept on every set of heads. Note: because they utilize stock valvetrain hardware, Stage 1 heads are best suited to “bolt-in” type cams.

STAGE 2

he NRHS Stage 2 CNC-ported cylinder head is subject to much of the same treatment as Stage 1

head, except that these get heads get fitted with premium quality Hurricane stainless steel oversize valves, high lift chrome silicone springs, bronze manganese guides, titanium retainers, and

competition proven 10 degree valve locks. This makes the Stage 2 head an excellent match for larger

cams, opening the door to the next performance level. These heads are by far the most popular choice

because of their versatility to be utilized in both mild and wild combinations. This allows the customer to install the heads, observe superb gains in the short term, and then build upon them without having to re-port the heads and incur additional expense. All of the careful documentation that goes into a Stage 1 head with regard to assembly and overall airflow balance also applies to a Stage 2 head.

OEM CYLINDER HEADS

New OEM XL1200R and XB Heads are now available assembled from NRHS!

T

he new XB and 2004 XL1200R cylinder heads represent a major step forward in port design from previous OEM cylinder heads. When comparing stock to stock, our testing has shown these heads to be capable of 5-6 more horsepower than typical Thunderstorm heads! Complementing the much improved ports is a set of special lightweight large-diameter valves, single beehive style springs with extra travel, ultra-lightweight retainers & keepers, and an improved valve stem seal design. As a result of these improvements, the new XB/04XL heads are quickly becoming the OEM performance head of choice for XL's and Buells.

NRHS takes the hassle and expense out of using these new heads! Until now, these heads were only available unassembled. NRHS now offers these heads professionally assembled with premium Hurricane valves and the deck trued for the same price as all of the individual stock components would cost you at your dealer! We'll also drill and tap the breather holes for no extra charge if desired. Other options include chamber work to accommodate angle dome pistons at your desired compression ratio, heavy duty valve train components, black powder coating, and Stage 1, 2, or 3 porting services. We also offer pushrods and pushrod cover kits as well as a Buell front engine mount to simplify the installation.

More Details These heads feature 1.810" intake and 1.580" exhaust valves, the same size as Thunderstorm, but with 7mm stems for additional weight savings. A single beehive style valve spring controls each valve, further reducing weight at the critical top end of the spring which sees the most movement. The springs measure about 135lbs at 1.850" installed height when new. A new improved valve guide seal design is used as well. There is plenty of retainer-to-guide seal clearance and coil bind clearance to allow up to .550" of valve lift, a full .050" more than the earlier heads, opening up the possibility of using higher lift cams*. The heads use a bathtub style 62cc chamber with flat squish bands. At stock 1200 bore and stroke, this chamber provides approximately a 10:1 compression ratio with flat tops. The XB and 2004 XL1200R heads are identical in every way except the finish and the breather holes, which are already drilled and tapped on the 1200R heads but not on the XB heads (the XB heads already have the boss, however).

Professional Assembly Makes the Difference! We start by truing the deck in the CNC machine. Experience has shown it typically takes about .005" of material removal to get the deck perfectly flat for a good head gasket seal. During assembly, all new parts are used, and premium quality Hurricane stainless steel valves are installed (1.810 intake, 1.580" exhaust, 7mm stems). Stem protrusion is checked and adjusted as needed. Valve springs are fully tested for correct seat pressure and travel, and valve spring installed height is set. Valveto-valve clearance is checked and we will advise if additional work is needed to correct (this is primarily a function of the cams you choose; cams with a lot of overlap may require clearancing work). Exhaust studs are installed. We can optionally shim the springs for additional seat pressure if needed for your cams*. All of that is done at no extra charge! For only a little bit more, with XB heads, we'll drill and tap the breather holes if needed

(04 XL heads already have these holes drilled and tapped). We can also cut the combustion chambers for an angled squish band and/or to achieve a desired compression ratio. And of course, if you'd like everything you can get out of these heads, we can fully port and flow them as well as fit ultra-high performance Hurricane valvetrain components. We've made as much as 125rwhp at 1250cc with Stage 3 ported XB heads, totally streetable! * - Be careful about how aggressive of a cam lobe and how much spring pressure you put to OEM valves with 7mm stems. A big part of H-D's ability to get 7500rpm safely from these light duty components in the XB9 is the gentle profile of the stock XB cam lobes. We recommend converting to heavy duty Hurricane springs and Hurricane valves with 5/16" stems when using aggressive cam lobes.

Cylinder Heads Installation Issues Stock XL rocker boxes bolt right up and the stock XL pushrod tubes work fine. Your stock pushrods may or may not work, because these heads are about .025" shorter than an XL or Thunderstorm head. By itself, this is generally not enough to necessitate custom pushrods. However, if you are shortening the stack further with additional milling to raise compression, milling of your cylinders, and/or thinner than stock gaskets, pushrod length may become a concern. The best way to determine if pushrod length is an issue is to measure the amount of lifter plunger preload you're getting, ideally the plunger should be centered in it's travel when the valves are closed (stock lifters have .200" of travel). We recommend correcting the pushrod length if the plunger is more than .050" away from centered. Pushrod length can be corrected by using Hurricane pushrods, which are available in either fully adjustable or fixed length versions. When using adjustable pushrods, we highly recommend a set of collapsible pushrod covers to facilitate adjustment. Note that the right (pushrod side) front mounting hole on these heads is moved inward 1/4" from previous Evolution XL heads. Modification of your engine mount may be required. For owners of Buell tube frame models, we offer a billet aluminum mount with the hole correctly located for these heads. Designed to be extra-strong, this mount is CNC machined from a solid chunk of 6061T6 aluminum. Extra material is placed in all stressed areas and all corners are radiused to eliminate stress risers. If you've already fitted XB heads and you'd like to swap out your modified mount for this unit, it's a 15 minute job because unlike competing products, the bolt can be inserted from the bottom. This is a super high-quality piece that will complement your Buell nicely.

When you’re in need of more than an OEM head can provide, it's time to step up to a set of STD heads! These are super high quality heads made from premium material, designed to withstand the rigors of your hot-rod street project or high compression, high rpm competition applications. Configuration of the chamber to your piston dome and desired compression ratio is included with these heads at no extra charge. Note that some combinations of piston domes and compression ratio may require excess deck milling which compromises valve to piston clearance as well as manifold fit and may also necessitate shorter or adjustable pushrods. Please call if you’re unsure.

STD Heads for Big-Bore and Racing Applications When going to a big-bore, ideally you want a head made for the larger bore size, otherwise you’ll never get everything out of the motor that it’s capable of delivering. NRHS can provide STD heads with the chamber enlarged and with the valve angles altered such that larger valves can be used to take advantage of the bigger bore. Other options available include raised ports, oval intake ports, dual carbs, and external head drains. Properly configured, these heads will take your horsepower and torque to a new level that’s simply not feasible with OEM heads. We’ve done many race and street engines with these heads and the results are truly impressive. This level of head is custom configured to your application specifically. 883 - 1200/1250 CONVERSION KITS Converting your 883 Sportster to a 1200 is one of the best performance investments you can make. But to do it successfully, you need high quality parts and services. NRHS has what you need! Precision Boring and Honing of Your Stock 883 Cylinders Save money and get the best possible ring seal and engine life by having your stock 883 cylinders precision bored and honed by NRHS. We bore your cylinders using a state-of-the-art CNC machine that not only bores them straight, but it squares the bore up to the case deck surface and precisely centers the bore to specifications. A special double cutter boring head is used to eliminate deflection induced distortions common with typical boring machines, and coolant is directed into the bore during the operation to ensure thermal stability for the straightest bore possible. Torque plates are used of course. We have found this boring equipment and procedure to produce the highest quality bore job possible. Once bored, your cylinders are then precision honed, again with torque plates attached. During this procedure your pistons are custom fitted to the cylinders, providing a precise cylinder wall clearance that minimizes noise and enhances both ring seal and longevity. This level of precision is simply not achievable by slapping pistons into off-the-shelf cylinders.

Engine Kits This provides an idea of what to expect from the NRHS/Axtell Street Dominator conversion kit when used with your 883 heads and supporting components*. Only the head preparation level was changed between these three pulls, all other components remained the same. For even more power, swap your 883 heads out for a set of NRHS prepared Thunderstorm or XB Heads. Many NRHS customers have made over 100 rear wheel horsepower using these higher flowing heads with the 1250 kit. We had a good product in '98 but now, we feel like we’ve created the most well-rounded premium piston on the market today! Totally re-designed and updated with the latest in forging and piston ring development, this line of piston brings together the best state-of the-art features around. Being head guys, we pay particular attention to carefully matching squish configuration to the stock head, resulting in maximum power with a reduced risk of detonation. Dual wrist pin oilers, light weight tool steel wrist pin, expansion grooves, and valve pockets that accept high lift cams and large valves are standard equipment on all Hurricane pistons. To complement our premium quality Hurricane pistons, we offer Total Seal rings exclusively. Total Seal’s “Moly Max” ductile moly top ring provides the outstanding durability and excellent sealing characteristics we demand from our rings. These rings are also proven to work extremely well with the Nicom lined Axtell cylinders. We believe these to be the finest rings available. Camshafts

W

ith the number and variety of camshafts available these days, picking the right one can seem like a game of Russian Roulette. Pick a stick that has too much duration and overlap for your motor and you’ll kill your bottom end torque production, or conversely pick one with too little and you'll have a bike that pulls great out of the hole, but falls on its face when you get out to pass that truck. Successful camshaft selection requires an understanding of the interactions between the intake system, the flow characteristics of the heads, the bore and stroke of the engine, the compression ratio, and the exhaust system, all pulled together in a package that best suits the type of bike you ride, and most importantly your riding style. If you are in doubt or confused about which grind is appropriate for your application, please do not hesitate to call and speak with a performance consultant. The grinds listed here have proven to be successful in their intended application with matching components and head work from NRHS.

Except where noted, these cams are not “bolt-in”. Installation requires careful checking of various clearances as well as valve springs that are appropriate for the application. Also, we highly recommend heavy duty lifters, adjustable pushrods and roller tip rocker arms for cam lifts above .550”. But up until now you really had no choice because if you had your cylinder heads decked or converted to the new XB heads you needed to get adjustable pushrods to compensate for the reduced height. Well NRHS has solved the problem for you. Our Hurricane fixed length pushrods are constructed of ultra stiff 3/8” 4140 chrome moly tubing to prevent flexing. Plus we have already taken the guess work out by having the pushrods made in sizes to handle most engine configurations. Custom sizes are also available if needed.

Hurricane Chrome Moly Adjustable Pushrods

NRHS is proud to offer our own line of super strong adjustable pushrods. We looked at all the features we wanted in a pushrod and incorporated them into this product. We started with high strength heat treated seamless 4140 chrome moly tubing, for outstanding rigidity under even the most demanding conditions. “Mae West” ends accommodate high lift cams without concern for the end coming out of the rocker arm seat. 5/16” adjuster nuts are stronger than an adjuster screw with wrench flats as commonly used on other products. The tube itself has an integrated nut at the bottom to make adjustment easy. Twin Cam and Evo Big Twin sets include different lengths for intake and exhaust to maximize the amount of thread engagement and make the assembly stronger. Available in ultra stiff .065 straight 3/8” wall design, or a tapered design for the ultimate strength to weight ratio without the rub problems common with 7/16” pushrods. Tappets & Accessories

Don't take chances with your valvetrain, use a high quality tappet from NRHS! We have used JIMS Powerglide and Hydrosolid tappets extensively and they are a premium quality, reliable piece. A high performance tappet anti-rotation pin set should be used in 1995-1999 Sportster and Buell engines, as the stock tappet pins are supported on only one side and are prone to failure in high performance applications. This exclusive machined venturi ring sets the Hurricane Flow apart from the competition and will put you firmly at the head of the pack.

Please Note: Because of the adverse carbon build up and loss of horsepower resulting from routing the head breathers back into the intake tract, we’ve designed the Hurricane Flow with no provision to route the head breather assembly back into it. Thus the separate purchase of a head breather kit, including banjo bolts and fittings is required to properly complete installation of the Hurricane Flow. NRHS offers several different inexpensive breather kit options, see page 2 for more details. Sportster owners also note that the purchase of a carb support bracket may be necessary to complete installation as well. When Harley-Davidson redesigned the venerable Sportster line for the 2004 model year they made a number of fantastic changes, including rubber mounting and the addition of higher performance engine components such as XB Buell style heads on the 2004-up XL 1200's. Unfortunately, the potential of these engines has gone unrealized for many riders who opted for the factory's undersized, restrictive paper “performance” air cleaner kit, until now. Our Hurricane Flow Air Filters come in sizes double and triple the surface area of the stock set up coupled with the freer flowing media provided by the K&N filter elements to create a zero restriction environment for your engine to operate at its maximum potential. Daytona Twin Tec Ignition Modules This is the best module we have found for 04 and up Sportsters and carbureted Twin Cams. Features two advance curves families that are adjustable to accommodate stock to modified engines. Selectable multi-spark mode. Five rotary switches for mode select, timing adjustments, advance slope and rpm limit (in 100rpm steps). Requires OEM coils with less than 1 ohm resistance. Dyna Nose Cone Ignition Modules The Dyna 2000i Programmable units are nose cone modules that are packed with features. It will support single or dual fire operation with single or dual plug heads when used with the appropriate coil. Dual pickups are incorporated into the module to allow single fire operation down to zero rpm. An independent tach output is provided; no tach adapter is needed. The VOES input can be used as a nitrous retard input with adjustable control of the timing advance removed. An indicator LED is provided to show the state of the VOES/nitrous retard input. Dyna Coils fire/single plug coil is the compact and powerful Dyna DC6-5. The DC6-5 is two completely independent coils in one package, and yet it’s only slightly bigger than the stock coil and therefore will generally fit in the stock location and under the stock cover without any problem. Primary resistance is 3 ohms. For single fire dual plug applications, use the Twinfire DC6-4 coil with 4 output towers (substantially larger than a stock coil, custom mounting required). Spark Plugs We carry Denso Iridium spark plugs exclusively because we have found them to be the BEST spark plug made. Iridium is six times harder than platinum and withstands temperatures in excess of 4000 degrees. The electrodes on these plugs are only .4mm which means the plugs will fire even in extreme cylinder pressure conditions and with less voltage. Also, we have hard-to-find spark plug indexing washers for both 12mm and 14mm plugs. Five each of three different thicknesses are included.

Supertrapp Exhaust Systems

We have found the Supertrapps to be one of the best exhaust systems on the market. Their case of tunability with simple disc changes allows you to not only tailor the sound but also the torque range. Heavy duty construction, excellent paning and heat shields are included. For increased power and sound we recommended adding 6 to 10 extra discs.

Sometimes you just need a little more tuning than most manufacturers can provide. The Supertrapp exhaust systems allow you to fine tune your powerband with simple disc changes.
