Proposal for On-ramp Material creation Brief introduction about the project NPTEL, as a part of its charter, had created many video lectures and Web-based material and have made it freely available. The material created and hosted are of high-quality with correct vocabulary and high-pedagogical standards. However, if we look at the student population across the country pursuing engineering studies, most of them are from non-urban areas. There is a substantial barrier for them to readily consume this high-quality content, although the learning is not complete without consuming this high-quality content. We need to have intermediate level content (aka ‘On-ramp content’) to ease the access to the high-quality material. This would be ‘Amateur content’ which explain the concepts in non-standard, contextual language and even in vernacular to facilitate easier understanding. Once that is done, the student’s ability to understand and assimilate the high-quality content with ‘correct’ vocabulary will be enhanced. The proposal is 

To create a whole range of On-ramp content corresponding to all NPTEL material, in collaboration with students and high-quality non-urban educators

To use the generated content to setup self-tutoring and peer-level tutoring for students to understand NPTEL videos

To create a social network to enable this activity to go in a sustainable fashion

Targeted beneficiaries All students pursuing engineering education.

Duration and major milestones Duration is for 24 months. Since the project is operational in nature, the deliverables would be in proportion to the overall deliverable commitment with a granularity of a quarter.

Project Cost Rs. 200,00,000.00 (RS 200 lakhs)

Work done under the project The main activity would be in the nature of conducting campaigns in different Engineering Colleges and Universities for creation of On-ramp content.

Equipment required for the project There will be no capital expenditure incurred for this project. Any field equipment required towards this will be rented for the specific usage. Also the server infrastructure would be hired in Amazon Cloud environment. 1|Page

Physical space, and technical infrastructure of Classle will be used for this purpose.

Artefacts developed through the project 1. Customized environment for courses for atleast 10 large engineering universities in India. NPTEL courses will be appropriately staged within these environments. 2. Atleast 100,000 pages of text content by way of On-ramp material which will be associated with the course material. This material will be classified and aligned with the NPTEL material. We will study the click-through from this material to the corresponding NPTEL content and the impact. 3. Atleast 50,000 multi-media material (Pictures, Video, Audio, etc.) which will be audio-visual representation of the amateur content. This material will be classified and aligned with the NPTEL material. We will study the click-through from this material to the corresponding NPTEL content and the impact. 4. Atleast 30,000 word ‘Concept Vocabulary’ aligned with the micro and On-ramp content. 5. Extensive transaction data and poll data to understand the effect, impact and usage.

Details of environmental benefits Increased knowledge level of the students, especially students with non-urban education and social background. Higher quality of engineering graduates.

Employment generation potential The project will employ about 12 technical and operational staff. The outcome of the project will increase the knowledge and professional levels of the students and in that process increase the employability and relevance of the millions of students.

Final impact or benefit 1. Higher knowledge and professional quality of students pursuing engineering education. 2. Higher relevance and employability of the engineering graduates.
