This review was based on public policy analysis regarding the role as well as effectiveness of gender mainstreaming in climate change adaptation, resilience, and mitigation issues; the relevance of IKS for PHC service delivery system; Mainstreaming IKS for enhanced and sustainable PHC service delivery access into national health policies, plans and programmes.

In this review, we collated published evidence on climate change policy and communication to enhance capacity building for national and sub-regional vulnerability, adaptation, and mitigation innovations to climate change using relevant search terms. Additional information was accessed using internet search engines, multiple libraries, bulletins, and discussions with some key informants. IKS cross-cutting themes such as cultural, economic, environmental, political, and legal issues like; gender, policy, ICT, communication skills, technology, business, employment, science, media, literacy, health, safety, values , skills, and ethics. Gender mainstreaming is vital for climate change policy dialogue; Climate change has inflicted heavy loss and damage to climate to PHC status, facilities, projects, programmes, and infrastructure; IKS for PHC has gained acceptance and recognition at national, sub-regional, regional, and global (international) levels; Public awareness communication can cleanse the negative cultural practices associated with IKS for PHC, women, and climate change IKS is cultural, traditional, accessible, affordable, popular, known, relevant, effective, efficient, local, credible, trusted, and needed; IKS has generated credible research, projects, policies, products, services, documentation, dialogues, curricula, businesses, & fora; IKS faces multiple gaps, cynics, sceptics, critics, and opponents too. IKS is a life long process which aim to clarify and impart values, awareness, concepts, skills, attitudes, knowledge, and actions for effective and efficient community based PHC; environmental conservation and climate change management at local, community, national, sub-regional, regional, and global levels. IKS is natural, cultural, accessible, effective, efficient, local, global, sustainable, popular, and affordable. IKS faces the challenges of negative cultural practices, policy deficiencies, documentation, prejudices, ethical standards, stakeholders’ coordination, & investments.
