Readers React of the Cbemical equation of photosynthesis in plants' by Sushil Pl adhan [Bionotes, 12 (1}: 35]

Re: 'Uncommon

.

Incidentally another point, (but quite unimportant) from your latest issue-the 'Uncommon balancing of the Chemical equation of photosynthesis'. The equation we were taught when I went to school (50 years ago) is in fact the fmal one given with no water molecule on the right, which S.Pradban rejects as impossible ! The custom was in those days not to include the same substance on both sides of the equation, even if it bas to be present . If you insist on listing all chemicals that must be ptesent, · then surely you must add at least one molecule of chlorophyll to both side ! Plants emit water vapour all the time, and we called that Transpiration. For Photosynthesis they emitted Oxygen, while absorbing Carbon Dioxide, in the presence of Chlorophyll and this only during the daytime using the energy of Sunlight. -C. Smith P.O.
