The Amur Bird Project The aim of the Amur Bird Project is to study the avifauna along the middle stream of the Amur River – a species-rich and under surveyed area in Far East Russia. We collect data on distribution, ecology and threats of endangered and less-known species and want to establish a long-term monitoring for both breeding birds and migrants. Another important part of the Amur Bird Project is environmental education, following the philosophy that nature protection can only be successful with the acceptance and involvement of the local people. Our work is based at Muraviovka Park for Sustainable Land Use. Since 2011 teams consisting of international volunteers worked annually on different projects.

Muraviovka Park The Muraviovka Park for Sustainable Land Use was established in 1994 as the first non-governmentally managed territory for sustainable land use and environmental education in Russia. It covers 6,500 hectares of wetlands, meadows and crop fields with small forest islands in the Amur River valley and its first terrace. In 1995 the Park and its adjacent territories were added to the Ramsar List of Wetlands of International Importance. The area is famous for its breeding populations of endangered species and is important stopover for migratory cranes and water birds. Muraviovka Park is situated in the southern part of the Zeya-Bureya Plain, 50 kilometers south-east of the city of Blagoveshchensk in the Amur Region of Far East Russia (49°55´08,27´´N, 127°40´19,93´´E). The Muraviovka Park is the home base of the Amur Bird Project, crucially supporting our work in numerous ways.

The Team In 2014, the Amur Bird Project field team consisted of ten volunteers from Germany and Hungary. Two people worked during July, up to six during August, seven during September and one continued the studies until mid-October. An overview is given in table 1. We received additional help by Muraviovka Park´s volunteers: Marketa Tichakova from the Czech Republic collected many valuable data during breeding season in June and July and Vitalina Lobanova from Belorussia helped us during September. Financials Muraviovka Park is a non-profit organization that does not have full-time researchers and educators on staff. The Amur Bird Project is organized by private and all participants pay their travel costs and living expenses by themselves. For the realization of the work we always depend on financial support. In 2014, we received financial support by The Sound Approach and through fundraising by the Rotary Club Potsdam District 1940, the Naturschutzbund Regionalverband Erzgebirge (NABU RVE) e.V., the Verein Sächsischer Ornithologen (VSO) e.V. and by private donors. A complete overview of the project costs and the funds received in 2014 is given in table 2. In former years we achieved funds from Muraviovka Park (2011-2013), Deutsche OrnithologenGesellschaft e.V. (2013), Oriental Bird Club (2013), International Crane Foundation (2013), Naturschutzbund Deutschland e.V. (2013), Förderkreis Allgemeine Naturkunde Biologie e.V. (2012), ProRing e.V. (2012-2013), Ornithologischer Verein zu Leipzig e.V. (2013) and by numerous private donors, which helped us to buy most of the equipment which is still in use.

Our studies In 2014 we started our surveys in July. Due to difficulties with visa and permissions we were only able to begun our work at the 25th of July. The breeding bird surveys were rather unsuccessful, since many species finished the breeding season very early in 2014. With the 1th of August we started our daily mist-netting scheme. Since 2011 we are working in a standardized way to monitor populations of migrating birds. Until the 17th of October we trapped and ringed birds on an almost daily basis. During August and September we did not only open our mist-nets during daytime, but also during night. We used tape-lure to attract nocturnal migrants to our nets. For this, we used the song and calls of Siberian Rubythroat Luscinia calliope and Eurasian Skylark Alauda arvensis, as we did in autumn 2013. All birds are banded with a ring from the Moscow Ringing Centre, and data about species, age, sex, biometry, fitness, parasites and diseases is collected. During September we conducted daily crane counts before sunset: all incoming cranes were counted from the balcony of the research center when flying from the fields to their roosting sites in the wetlands inside Muraviovka Park. We recorded species, number, time, age, origin and flight direction of all birds if possible. During all season we counted waterfowl on Kapustikha Lake in front of Muraviovka Park´s headquarters, made field trips to other parts of the protected area and recorded all random bird observations on a daily basis. A map with the more or less regularly observed areas is given below, with the coordinates in table 3. Weather was very favorable in August, with much less rain in comparison with the summer 2013. Heavy rainfalls stopped our work only during the first days of September. The first night temperature below 0°C was measured on 24th of September, while first snow fell on 7th of October.

Results Breeding Birds Since breeding season ended very early in 2014, we were not able to collect much data on breeding birds in 2014. A family of the Eastern Spot-billed Duck Anas zonorhyncha was seen on Kapustikha Lake during August and September and a female Eurasian Teal Anas crecca with seven chicks was observed 5th August on Pestschanoie Lake – both duck species are only rare or exceptional breeders at Muraviovka Park. Several pairs of the globally threatened White-naped Crane Grus vipio were observed, including one pair with three chicks – a really rare and happy event. At least three pairs of the endangered Red-crowned Crane Grus japonica bred, and one pair in the wetlands in the south of Muraviovka Park successfully raised two chicks. The Common Gallinule Gallinula chloropus is a new breeding bird in the Amur region, with the first breeding record at the Park in 2011. Since that time, it was annually noticed – in 2014 at least one pair with four chicks was observed 7th August at the water channel in the south of Muraviovka Park. The water level in the wetlands was still high after the flood in 2013, and so, Common Terns Sterna hirundo and White-winged Terns Chlidonias leucopterus bred on several sites again. Pairs of both species fed chicks on the 5th August at the water channel in the south of the Park. The Japanese Quail Coturnix japonica is now listed as globally threatened, too – but at Muraviovka Park it is still a very common breeder. Up to six calling males were heard just around the headquarters during August. For the first time during the Amur Bird Project, Azure Tits Cyanistes cyanus were found breeding – the family with nine fledgelings was ringed and re-trapped several times close to the headquarters. Other species that bred again around the Park´s headquarters in-

cluded Amur Falcon Falco amurensis, Yellow-breasted Buntings Emberiza aureola and Japanese Reed Buntings Emberiza yessoensis. However, we failed to find Baer´s Pochard Aythya baeri in 2014. Crane Counts An overview of the cranes roosting at Muraviovka Park in September 2014 is given in figure 1, and the percentage of juveniles is shown in figure 2. These numbers refer only to the cranes that were visible from the balcony of the research station. Especially the Hooded Cranes Grus monacha were roosting mainly in the northern part of Muraviovka Park, so we definitely were not able to count all birds. The approximate positions of the most commonly used roosting sites are given in map 1, with coordinates in table 3. Eurasian Cranes Grus grus were only rarely observed: one bird on the 5th of September, and three birds on the 25th and 29th of September. We were very happy about the observation of an adult Siberian Crane Grus leucogeranus, flying in with White-naped Cranes on the 18th of September. The bird was found again on the Park´s fields the next day. The Siberian Crane is world´s rarest crane species, and Muraviovka Park serves as a valuable stop-over site.

Bird ringing 6679 birds of 106 species were ringed between July and October, and 1333 ringed birds of 68 species were re-trapped. A list of all ringed and re-trapped species is given in Appendix x. Several species were ringed for the first time within the Amur Bird Project: One Common Sandpiper Actitis hypoleucos each was trapped 5th and 12th of August, and a Green Sandpiper Tringa ochropus was trapped in the night with tape lure 9th of August. A total of four individuals of the Dark-sided Flycatcher Muscicapa sibirica were ringed during August 2014. This species was recorded for the first time at the Park in 2012. For the second time during the Amur Bird Project we ringed Northern Goshawk Accipiter gentilis, Japanese Sparrowhawk Accipiter gularis, Common Kestrel Falco tinnunculus, Short-eared Owl Asio flammeus and Richard´s Pipit Anthus richardi. Since we have data now from four years of standardized mist-netting during September and October, we are able to present the first population trends of migrant Passerines at Muraviovka Park. For this, all long-distance migrants with >100 individuals trapped in the standard mist-nets between 2011 and 2014 were chosen. This was true for Olive-backed Pipit Anthus hodgsoni, Red-flanked Bluetail Tarsiger cyanurus, Siberian Accentor Prunella montanella, Pallas´s Leafwarbler Phylloscopus proregulus, Rustic Bunting Emberiza rustica and Little Bunting Emberiza pusilla. The total number of trapped individuals was corrected for the number of days trapped during that year. Since we used different types of mist-nets in 2011, we also had the correct the number of trapped individuals for the total length of the mist-nets. For that reason, the 2011 data has to be taken with care, and the year 2012 was used as the basis year (100%). The annual index of the corrected number of trapped individuals of every year is shown in diagrams 3-8, the trends and the coefficient of determination in table 4.

Of six analyzed bird species, four showed no significant trend. All four species showed similar fluctuations – 2011 and 2013 were rather bad years, 2012 and 2014 good years. Two species, Rustic Bunting and Little Bunting showed significant negative trends. This is very alarming, since we know that another species of the genus, the Yellow-breasted Bunting, drastically declined in East Asia during the last decades. The continuation of our work will allow us to prove these trends, and the inclusion of the month August in our standard ringing season since 2013 will enable us to include much more species in future analysis. Random Observations A complete observation list is attached in appendix 1. Several rare and/or endangered species were noticed again at Muraviovka Park in 2014, like the cranes (see above and below). We were also very happy about the highest number of Oriental Storks Ciconia boyciana ever recorded at the Park: At least 250 individuals fed in the wetlands in front of the headquarters on 19th of October (SMS), meaning 10-25% of the world´s population of this highly endangered species. The high water levels during the last two breeding seasons were probably the reason for an above average breeding success. Up to 30 of the globally threatened Falcated Ducks Anas falcata gathered on Kapustikha Lake in late August (WH et al.). In general, number of ducks was never that high during the four years of the Amur Bird Project. On the 1th of September, up to 700 individuals were counted in front of the headquarters. With start of the hunting season, they gathered there as this is the only safe place around. They also changed their behavior due to the hunting pressure: during our crane counts we noticed every evening that flocks of ducks were flying out to the fields after sunset, and came back to the wetlands before sunrise.

15

Other globally threatened species that were observed included Far Eastern Curlew Numenius madagascariensis, Asian Dowitcher Limnodromus semipalmatus, Greater Spotted Eagle Aquila clanga and Japanese Waxwing Bombycilla japonica. Again, we recorded three bird species for the first time at Muraviovka Park. From 31th of August to 1th of September we noticed a Lesser Cuckoo Cuculus poliocephalus around the headquarters (WH, LB). The occurrence of the Asian House Martin Delichon dasypus, which was always predicted by SMS to occur at the Park, was finally verified on 29th of August, when a single individual hunted insects within a flock of Barn Swallows Hirundo rustica around the ringing station (WH, LB). Another “first” was the observation of an adult Long-tailed Skua Stercorarius longicaudus, migrating southward on the 8th of September (WH, AH, FB). Other species that were noticed at Muraviovka Park in the past, but not within the Amur Bird Project before included Whooper Swan Cygnus cygnus, Red-breasted Merganser Mergus serrator, Horned Grebe Podiceps auritus, Gyrfalcon Falco rusticolus, Terek Sandpiper Xenus cinereus, Red-necked Stint Calidris ruficollis and Red-necked Phalarope Phalaropus lobatus. Noteworthy are also the observations of the following species – they were recorded for the first time at the Park during the Amur Bird Project in former years and were seen again in 2014: Greater Scaup Aythya marila, Eyebrowed Thrush Turdus obscurus, Eastern Crowned Warbler Phylloscopus coronatus and Siberian Bush Warbler Bradypterus davidi.

Other animals A common species in the oak forests around the headquarters is the Siberian Chipmunk Eutamas sibiricus. Two colonies of the Long-tailed Ground Squirrel Urocitellus undulatus were found in the dry area north of the Park. We also registered again Siberian Roe Deer Capreolus pygargus, Red Fox Vulpes vulpes, Asian Badger Meles leucurus, Siberian Weasel Mustela sibirica, Muskrat Ondatra zibethicus and several undetermined species of mice, rats and bats. Several times we had problems with feral cats and dogs. The high water levels in 2014 were probably the reason for very high numbers of Amur Brown Frogs Rana amurensis. Other amphibians that were observed are Mongolian Toad Bufo raddei, Japanese Tree Frog Hyla japonica, and – for the very first time – a Siberian Salamander Salamandrella keyserlingii. A single individual was seen during a mist-net check in the night at the end of August close to the Park´s farm (WH).

Environmental education Several groups and school classes visited Muraviovka Park and our project during autumn, more than 300 children watched us ringing birds and learned about bird migration and nature conservation. From 12th-16th of August 21 children from the Amur region took part in our Bird Ecology Summer Camp. This was organized for the first time in 2014 together with Muraviovka Park´s Svetlana Yakovenko and Russian teachers. The kids learned a lot about bird ecology, migration, identification and nature conservation. All of them were highly motivated, and so they came usually already before breakfast to the ringing station, to see what is new. Juliana Nefjodowa helped us with translating to Russian, English and German all day long. On the last morning the summer school ended with a “bird race”, when the children had to identify as much bird species as possible within one hour around Muraviovka Park´s headquarter. Together with one of the Amur Bird Project team the three groups recognized 39 species - a good sign, that the participants learned a lot about the threatened diversity in the Amur region. For most of them this week was also the first contact with foreigners, and so we had the feeling that these days contributed also to intercultural understanding and tolerance. If we will find financial support, we will organize such a summer school again next year.

Outlook In 2015 we want to continue our breeding bird surveys and want to start a standardized long-term monitoring with point-stop counts at Muraviovka Park. Furthermore, we want to continue our bird ringing scheme during both spring and autumn seasons. Bird ecology summer camps for children and students are planned again for May and June. To enable constant long-term work, we need new facilities at Muraviovka Park. The room that we used as ringing station during the last years is not really suitable for that purpose and is needed for environmental education. Furthermore, we need facilities for sleeping and cooking which are useable during both cold and warm seasons – the rooms in the main building are needed for tourism and are no longer available for the Amur Bird Project team. There are plans now for building a new small wooden house with a central stove, containing two dormitories, a dining room and a lab. This would get the Amur Bird Project to the next step, allowing us to work much more efficient. For making this possible, we need 10.000 Euro / 600.000 Rubles. Please donate now! The money is collected by the German nature conservation organization NABU RVE e.V. and will be 100% used for the Amur Bird Project. Account holder: NABU RVE e.V.
