Client Objective The client was a large automotive parts retail chain that was interested in developing category management reporting which would enable it to make informed stocking decisions intended to maximize market coverage, improve turns, minimize inventory carrying costs and improve profitability at individual store locations.

Approach Bartech was retained to design, code and test category management reporting software which would achieve the intended business objectives. During the engagement Bartech consultants worked collaboratively with the Supplier Category Captain and Retailer in Joint Application Design sessions. After identifying the report information that was necessary to make knowledgeable stocking decisions, program logic was designed which would enable the client to simulate the results of “what if” stocking scenarios. Additional profile-driven features were included in the software so that it could be easily customized to accommodate nuances in local markets. Next, parts interchange standards were used to rationalize a total of twelve data files containing geographic “vehicles in operation” and historical sales of over 1500 different SKUs from multiple suppliers at both a local store and national supplier level. Base line reports were then produced for each of the 56 stores in the retail chain and a detailed procedures manual was developed which provided task level instruction to enable client personnel to manipulate data files and produce future reports and simulations.

Team Structure The Bartech team consisted of two consultants who worked closely with Supplier and Retail Management to complete this project.

Results The Category Management Reports developed during this project enable the Retailer to identify and rectify local inventory stocking decisions that are detrimental to profitability and to refine corporate sales strategy as market conditions change at both the local and regional level.
