Medical approach to weight management NEVER SAY DIET! DISCOVER YOUR BODY'S INNER WISDOM & LEARN HOW TO USE fT AUTHORS: Judy Toews, Nicole Parton Key Porter Books, 70 The Esplanade, Toronto, ON M5E 1R2 1998/240 pp/$19.95

OVERALL RATING Good STRENGTHS Accurate, up-to-date, medically sound approach to weight management WEAKNESSES No bibliography, testimonial base AUDIENCE People struggling with

weight

The few inaccuracies are minor variations that do not detract from the content, safety, or intent. Advice is given to see a family doctor or physiotherapist with respect to the exercise component As the book itself does not advocate dieting, no disclaimer is necessary for the part about eating normally. The main failing is the absence of a bibliography. The second criticism might in fact be a selling point with the lay public. It is substantially seeded with testimonials from Parton. While the medical profession is generally uncomfortable with testimonials, in this case, they do not detract from the accuracy of the information-they personalize it. The book contains easy-to-use suggestions and charts. It also has the basics required by medical professionals educated in medical nutrition. It would be useful for patients struggling with their weight. I recommend this book as one of the rare accurate and appropriate weight-management books. -Glenn Berall, MD, FRCPC Dr Berall is a Specialist in Clinical Nutrition for the American Board of Nutrition, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Paediatrics at the University of Toronto in Ontario, and is an active staff member in the Division of Gastroenterology and Nutrition at the Hospitalfor Sick Children.

T he authors wrote the book to share l with readers the Bodysense Program developed by Judy Toews and experienced by Nicole Parton. The book is, in fact, based on the medical literature. Toews' contribution to the book MIND YOUR BODY. A SEXUAL is its strong foundation on current med- HEALTH AND WELLNESS GUIDE ical nutrition literature. The information FOR WOMEN is, therefore, up-to-date and accurate. AUTHOR: Beth Howard

AUDIENCE Well-informed women who subscribe to a strong consumer view of health and health care n this book, the author discusses .women's sexual and reproductive health in a straightforward, upbeat manner, while aiming to correct misinformation and to counter negative stereotypes and attitudes. The book's easy-to-read format provides material in short bites, using many charts and key points from the main text. The author offers some material not readily accessible to the public (or even to many health care professionals). For example, the chapter "Sexual Wisdom" includes elaborate cross sections of the clitoris during sexual arousal and in its nonerect state, and detailed descriptions of the three
