INSTRUCTIONS
IMPORTANT System designed for negative earth circuits only. Locate a 12 Volt supply point at the ignition switch or at the fuse panel, ensuring that this supply is not dependent on a fuse. This 12 Volt supply is needed for the correct function of the electronic control unit (E.C.U.) and should only be active when the ignition switch is switched to the “ON” and “START” position. Make sure that there is no supply when the ignition switch is in the “OFF” or “ACCESSORIES” position. On some vehicles the power supply to the electrical system is interrupted in the “START” position, except to the starter and to the ignition coil. In this case, a Bosch relay (0332 014 150) must be fitted in addition and according to the wiring diagram. Disconnect battery before commencing with the fitting of the new ignition system. INSTALLATION Ignition Coil Disconnect the primary wire at the negative terminal marked -or 1. Do not disconnect wires from positive terminal marked + or 15, some vehicles have 2 wires connected to + terminal - do not change this arrangement. ‘., . Electronic Control Unit (E.C.U.) Fit the E.C.U. In the vicinity of the ignition coil on a cool, flat, vehicle body surface ensuring that there is b sufficient room to plug in the multiple plug and with the terminals facing downwards. Using the E.C.U. as a template drill two holes 5 mm (13164”) diameter and mount E.C.U. securely with the self tapping screws provided. Connect the multiple plug to the E.C.U. and attach the rubber boot. Plug will only fit one way into E.C.U. socket. Ignition Distributor - refer#lustration no. 1. Remove the distributor cap (1) and distributor rotor (2). Remove the contact set (3) making sure that the fastening screw does not fall into the centrifugal advance system. Unscrew the ignition condenser (4) and remove together with connecting lead from distributor hzsing. Replace condenser fastening screw into the distributor housing and tighten with nut (9) provided. Fix the sensor (6) to the adaptor plate (7) using the shorter screw and spring washer provided -ensure the three thin wires from the sensor are located in the slot of the adaptor plate. Install this assembly in the position previously occupied by the contact set using the longer screw and spring washer provided -ensure that the pin in the adaptor plate sits into the locating hole in the breaker plate. Slide the grommet holding the wires-from the sensor into the slot of the distributor housing (8). Be careful that these fine wires from the sensor are neatly arranged within the housing so they cannot foul any moving parts. Fit the new distributor rotor with triggering vane (5) on to the distributor shaft. c( ’ Ensure that the rotor spins freely and does not touch the pick-up assembly. Replace the distributor cap and secure with spring clips. Electrical Connection - refer Illustration no. 2. Attach the brown wire from the E.C.U. plug to the previously disconnected negative terminal (- or 1) of ignition coil. It is most important that the system is earthed correctly -cut black wire to length, fit larger lug provided and fix securely to a good clean earth connection. Connect red wire from the E.C.U. plug to the earlier located 12 Volt supply point. ln cases where a separate 12 Volt supply is needed to operate the E.C.U. while starting, a non-fused wire from the starter solenoid positive terminal marked + or C must be connected via a separate relay to the red cable. Don’t use terminal S on the Solenoid. Recheck all connections for correct polarity, position and good electrical fontact. Caution The pick-up assembly and/or the electronic control unit will be destroyed ifthipolarity is wrong or the E.C.U. earth has a bad connection. Do not bunch the cables from the E.C.U. together with the high tension leads from the ignition coil or the distributor. For best results ensure that the high tension cable between coil and distributor is of carbon core type. Reconnect battery. , Ignition Timing As a result of this conversion it will be necessary to reset the ignition timing using a timing light -if you do not have a timing light available ensure the ignition timing is correctly adjusted by your local service station or auto electrician. It is also recommended that you fit a new set of Bosch Spark Plugs ensuring these are correctly set to vehicle manufacturer’s specifications. To complete your tune up and ensure maximum results also fit a Bosch GT40R ignition coil.
