Derivatives Project Due on Lesson 72 For this project you will research a Latin root word along with several English words that derive from it. You will then organize your research in the form of a chart or other arrangement that conveys the relationships between the Latin word and the English derivatives.

Step 1: Look for Derivatives 1. Select a Latin word for which you can easily think of several derivatives. (For example, adverbs are poor choices since they generally don’t have many English derivatives, but Latin numbers have many English derivatives.) 2. Search for more English words derived from this word until you have collected eight English derivatives. • You might look in an English dictionary, or on the KET website (under “Verba”). • Don’t forget to explore prefixes and suffixes (such as pre-, sub-, de-, ex-, a(d)-, trans-, -able, and -fy) that might have attached to the Latin root to form new English words.

Step 2: Organize Your Derivatives 1. Choose a method of organizing your derivatives. You might choose to make a chart (in Microsoft Excel or with pen and paper). You could also make a PowerPoint presentation. • Your display must satisfy the following requirements: It displays as a title your chosen Latin root word, its principal parts, and its definition. It displays eight English words derived from your root word along with their part of speech and definition. It displays eight English sentences (one for each derivative) which correctly use each derivative in a context. It displays an appropriate picture (taken from the internet/computer or hand-drawn) for each derivative that effectively illustrates that derivative’s meaning.

Tips for the Derivative Project: Make your project neat and colorful! Your goal with this project is to communicate what Latin has taught you about English. Consider the way marketers create the posters/billboards that market their product. Colors attract attention! − Make sure each of your derivatives is actually derived from your root word. Check yourself with an English dictionary that gives etymological information (such as www.dictionary.com).

Extra Credit: Earn up to 10 points of extra credit by including two additional derivatives (with part of speech, definition, sentence, and illustration)—bringing the total to ten.
