Slide 1: Title page Slide 2: This is a story about a girl named Catherine and a life lesson she learned from an unexpected friend. Slide 3: Catherine has a younger brother named David who has Autism. Slide 4-11: In the world people have to follow certain rules in order to have a functioning and stable society. Well Catherine has given David her own set of rules so that he may function well in society and around others, because she feels that this will make him “normal.” A few rules include: Chew with your mouth closed, if someone says, “hi,” say “hi” back, not everything worth keeping has to be useful, solving one problem can create another, and looking closer can make something beautiful. Slide 12: Most of the time Catherine has to take care of David which frustrates her. Slide 13: She constantly tries to hide David from others. Slide 14: David attends therapy classes and this is where Catherine meets Jason Slide 15: Jason is in a wheelchair, and he can’t talk. He communicates through a notebook full of word cards that he points to. Slide 16: Catherine becomes close friends with Jason and they even take a few strolls around the block while her brother is in therapy. Slide 17: Catherine starts noticing that people stare at Jason, and Catherine is not at all happy with the way they act around him. That upsets her because she doesn’t think people should stare because it’s rude and simply not nice. Slide 18-19: But when Catherine sees people that she knows during her walk she tries to hide. Looks like Catherine wasn’t the only one being insensitive. It wasn’t ok for strangers to stare and apparently it’s not ok to be seen with him by people she knows. It seems like Catherine has some disabilities of her own. Slide 20: She is not fully able to accept people for the way they are. And this is seen when she draws a picture for Jason that has two people on a bench. One of those is suppose to be Jason. But he does not have his wheelchair. Jason is not happy with the drawing. Catherine believed that he might have liked to see himself without the chair but this was not the case. Slide 21: The wheelchair is a part of him and who he is. He has made peace with the fact that he is not like everyone but Catherine doesn’t understand that. Catherine sees the world as normal and not normal and she wanted to put Jason in what she believes is the normal category.

Slide 22: There is no such thing as normal. There is just different. Slide 23: The world is full of different and unique people and that finally clicked in Catherine’s head. She finally saw the beauty in that when she almost lost a good friend. Slide 24: She too has come to terms with her problems and no longer feels like she needs to hide her brother or herself from others. She has learned to accept people for who they are. Slide 25: Finish
