32nd Sunday in Ordinary Time

SAINT OF THE WEEK— ST. FRANCES XAVIER CABRINI—NOVEMBER 13 Frances Xavier Cabrini was the first United States citizen to be canonized; she became a U.S. citizen in 1909. Her deep trust in the loving care of her God gave her the strength to be a valiant woman doing the work of Christ. Refused admission to the religious order which had educated her to be a teacher, she began charitable work at the House of Providence Orphanage in Cadogno, Italy. In September 1877 she made her vows there and took the religious habit. When the bishop closed the orphanage in 1880, he named Frances prioress of the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart. Seven young women from the orphanage joined her. Since her early childhood in Italy, Frances had wanted to be a missionary in China but, at the urging of Pope Leo XIII, Frances went west instead of east. She traveled with six sisters to New York City to work with the thousands of Italian immigrants living there. She found disappointment and difficulties with every step. When she arrived in New York City, the house intended to be her first orphanage in the United States was not available. The archbishop advised her to return to Italy. But Frances, truly a valiant woman, departed from the archbishop’s residence all the more determined to establish that orphanage. And she did. In 35 years Frances Xavier Cabrini founded 67 institutions dedicated to caring for the poor, the abandoned, the uneducated and the sick. Seeing great need among Italian immigrants who were losing their faith, she organized schools and adult education classes. Saint o f the Day or www.americancatholic.org

SUPPORT VOCATIONS & CATHOLIC MILITARY CHAPLAINS NEXT WEEKEND Currently, 285 Catholic military chaplains provide pastoral care to over 1.5 million Catholics on ships, in combat, on bases and in 153 VA hospitals. Next week’s 2nd Collection for the Archdiocese for the Military Services (AMS) will fund their Co-Sponsored Seminarian Program, which identifies vocations within the military and is now educating 30 men for the priesthood and subsequent military chaplaincy. The AMS has no parishes from which to draw financial support and relies solely on donations. See their website for more information: http://www.milarch.org/faq

FOR CHRIST FOREVER / CRISTO PARA SIEMPRE During this past year our diocese embarked on an historic journey. We conducted our first Diocesan Capital Campaign. We, the people of St. Mary’s participated fully in this campaign through our prayers, time, and personal giving. Our parish was successful in reaching and surpassing the goal set for us from the diocese. We are still accepting pledges in the Parish Office. We are now in the four (4) year collection period. Those of us who made a pledge have also made a personal commitment to give, so let us persevere in our promise and see through to the end our pledge commitment. As we wind down the active appeal phase, we want to thank all those who volunteered to stuff envelopes or make phone calls or give a witness talk or host the receptions or made a pledge or said a pray. We especially want to thank Patrick Ng for stepping forward to be the Campaign Chairperson. His own personal story and commitment to St. Mary’s is truly inspiring. We will continue to offer updates as the years pass. Currently we have $744,516 pledged. We have collected $167,152. We have 321 Families participating. IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO MAKE A PLEDGE, ENVELOPES ARE IN THE PARISH OFFICE

MASS COUNT During the month of October each year, every parish is asked to count the total number of people who come to church each weekend. During this past month we counted a total of 12,322 over the 4 weekends of October. That’s an average of 3,080 per week. If we can compare this to last year’s average of 2,909 we find that we have grown a bit.

LifeTeen Gospel Reflection #ENDURANCE #FULFILLMENT #JOY #VOCATION Being a son or daughter of God is all a person needs in life. Although earthly things give us happiness, nothing gives us joy but God. Many people on Earth will draw us to their distractions – lust, stress, worry, alcohol, drugs – but we must exercise temperance. We must remember the love of God and avoid everything that tempts us. Because with God on our side, we can keep our focus and remember that the only source of true joy is the Lord. Everlasting life will be attained for those who keep their focus on God and keep their faith in Him. He is the God of those with a fire in their bellies and faith in their hearts. He is a God of sinners and saints. @Haylee, age 17 CONFIRMATION CLASSES Next class will be Nov 10th. PARENTS Next meeting will also be Nov 10th.

32nd Sunday in Ordinary Time

HOW DO I… SCHEDULE A BAPTISM? We celebrate baptisms in Spanish nearly every Saturday of the year and the last Sunday of the month. We celebrate English baptisms once a month on the 2nd Sunday (generally). The big exception is during Lent. Lent is a time for us to be preparing ourselves for great celebration of Easter, so the Church asks us during this time not to have major celebrations, if at all possible. There may be some weekends when the priest’s and deacon’s schedule do not permit us to celebrate baptisms. We may also change the Sunday baptisms based on observed holidays. We do limit the number of babies to be baptized at each celebration. If you have a specific date in mind, please call us early so you can be added to the list. You and you Godparents need to complete a Baptismal Class either here at St. Mary’s or another Catholic Church. All Godparents have to have completed their Sacraments of Initiation: Baptism, Confirmation, & 1st Communion. Godparents who are married need to be married in the Catholic Church. Please call for more info or to schedule a baptism: 714-525-2500

32ND WEEK OF ORDINARY: STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION What does it mean to hope in the Lord? The seven brothers and their mother who are featured in the first reading from 2 Maccabees both know and understand what it means. One of the brothers declares that everything he has received came from God, and he hopes to receive God’s blessings again. Another brother speaks of the “hope God gives of being raised up by Him.” Living lives of stewardship is living lives of hope. In his letter to the Thessalonians, Paul speaks of the “good hope” we have of God’s grace. Paul reminds us that the Lord “will strengthen and guard you.” The hope we have in the Lord is what gives us the total trust in Him which allows us to live lives of stewardship. Jesus encourages us to have hope in the living God in today’s Gospel. A stewardship approach to life exemplifies our confidence in God’s goodness and love. We are to take His love and spread it among those around us through sharing and service. Reaching out to others, knowing that we are strengthened by God, is a natural and fulfilling way to live. Good stewards are optimistic. As Helen Keller once said, “Optimism is the faith that leads to achievement. Nothing can be done without hope and confidence.” See more at www.thecatholicsteward.com
