(Ex., Matthew 5:34) It is now, “Love yourself so you can love your neighbor.” This sounds plausible and appealing to a narcissistic culture, but the Bible never commands self-love. It assumes selflove! Hence the command to love others as you love yourself and not if. Everyone loves himself! Even people who say they hate themselves are not happy about it. Why wouldnʼt someone be happy about the unhappiness of the one they hate? One would think they would be glad the one they hate is unhappy. This very unhappiness proves that they, in fact, love themselves. Many people interpret guilt, regret or disappointment with personal failures as self-hatred. Those bad feelings might be self-pity, depressive anger or the emotional aftermath of messed up values, but they are not self-hatred. In fact, it could be argued that a lot of our emotional problems are the result of self-love on sin steroids. So what you may need instead of more self-love is a good dose of forgiveness or a spiritual adjustment in your values. I know Someone Who can provide both. Do you ever find that when you really should be hustling, getting stuff done and at a deadline, you sometimes just, almost deliberately, slow down to a crawl? Well, I do. And it is almost as though I am daring myself to give in to goofing off, knowing full well I will have to work twice as hard when I finally get on the stick and get the stuff done. And I try to quickly remember something I read that had been said by the late and great Will Rogers, one of my many comedic heroes. He said, ʻʻEven if you are on the right track, youʼll get run over if you just sit there.” Oh, incidentally, for those of you younger than I am (and who isnʼt?) Mr. Rogers was famous as a student of human nature who understood and related to people, places, and things, and said what he thought, which most always was right. Right now, I am in danger of being run over by boxes of Christmas decorations, lists of things that must be done before itʼs too late, by cleaning up the mess made by hauling out boxes of stuff, answering correspondence (most of which are bills), and suddenly realizing I am faced with more duties than hours in the day or days in the week, and definitely, more shopping than money in the bank! Which brings us to why I am probably not alone, and the question of why are we doing it? Weʼre told to, thatʼs why. I heard something on TV that made me think (now thatʼs something new!). The guy was explaining that the custom of giving an engagement ring was not an ancient custom. In fact, it just began in the 1900s – or later, as I recall. Anyway, it was dreamed up by the jewelry industry as a way of selling their diamonds. A big publicity push to appeal to the romantic side of young (and not so young) love was received by probably every woman on the continent, as being the appropriate, and certainly most desirable, thing to do. Earlier “engagement” announcements were just announced in the church, telling the world the bride-to-be was spoken for. The idea of a ring – and preferably a diamond- was taken up with fervor, and has been established as a custom that obviously will be around forever. Christmas shopping has sort of taken on a life of itsʼ own as the new interpretation of big is better and tallied sales reports are flung at us just as if we were all out to set a new record. Forget the meaning of a gift given with love or joy or appreciation of friendship or family. The orange in the bottom of a sock hung by the chimney with care has been replaced by a Smart Phone, an I Pad, and other stuff I donʼt know anything about. Please note, right here and now, I am not getting on a soap box about how we have listened to the publicity of buying all sorts of stuff and cramming it into just a few weeks. I am right in there wading through aisles suddenly filled with racks and shelves and shopping carts waiting for me to find just the right thing. And I know it isnʼt entirely selfless, as I delight in giving someone I love something I know they will love and enjoy and watching them open it. Itʼs fun and itʼs gratifying and while I am of an age who remembers the orange in the sock and how my grandparents probably had to scrimp and save to get me that doll that said “Mama” when I tipped it forward, I go with the flow and try to balance sensibility with catchy ad phrases. I am now part of a world that follows (and sometimes blindly) the marketing scripts on TV, and print ads, and radio, and smugly feels we are doing our part for the economy. Maybe I will go buy a bag of oranges. It canʼt hurt.
