Vocabulary: The students will be using the Frayer Model to study new vocabulary. The Frayer model is a vocabulary development tool. In contrast with a straight definition, the model helps to develop a better understanding of complex concepts by having students identify not just what something is, but what something is not. Students will also identify characteristics of the new word and give examples that supports the definition. Comprehension questions: The questions come in two forms. The first form of question is multiple choice questioning. This form of question is looking for specific pieces of information. The second form is your “Who, What, Where, When, Why and How” question. This form of questioning requires the analysis of information and events in the story. The student is required to explain an answer, respond as if they were in the story, or state what they think the character(s) should do. The remaining sections are key components in studying literature in a detailed and meaningful way. The directions for each part are given within each section.

THE NOVEL STUDY CAN BE PRINTED AND STAPLED AS A PACKET USING THE INTRODUCTION AS THE COVER PAGE. ©2012 New Learning Publishing

Word Study The Frayer Model is an adaptation of the concept map. The framework of the Frayer Model includes: the vocabulary word, the definition, characteristics of the vocabulary word, examples of the vocabulary word, and non-examples of the vocabulary word. It is important to include both examples and non-examples, so students are able to identify what the vocabulary word is and what the vocabulary word is not. The chart is broken up into each component of the Frayer Model:

Example:

1. The vocabulary word goes in the center shape of the diagram. 2. The definition section is where the student will put the dictionary definition of the vocabulary word. The student will also rewrite the definition in their own words. 3. The characteristics section is where the student will use other words to describe the vocabulary word. 4. The examples section is where the student will provide words of what the vocabulary word means. 5. The non-examples section is where the student provide words that are in the same category or topic of the vocabulary word but are not examples of the given word.
