Sample Responses to Comprehension Questions Set 1, Level C: From Laundry Day by Karen Hjemboe On the section of the assessment titled “Comprehension Questions Section” the child may respond to the questions in numerous ways. There are many acceptable responses to each question. The child’s response is acceptable as long as the response to this section of the assessment demonstrates that he or she understood the meaning of the text. As the child answers each question, be sure to record the response carefully, using extra paper if needed. Here are several examples of the wide variety of acceptable responses to each question on this part of the assessment:

1. Literal Question: What did the kids put into the washing machine? The student should name at least two of the following:  Socks;  Pants;  Shirts.

2. Literal Question: What did the mom do with the clothes as they came out of the dryer? There are two possible answers to this question. On page 6 it shows mom folding the clothes on top of the dryer; on page 8 it shows her carrying a basket of folded clothes. So the expected answer was she folded them. But look at page 7. Here she is mainly holding up a shirt and appears to be stretching it out. This answer would be acceptable also.

3. Inferential Question: What did the family do at the end of the story? How do you know that?  They left the Laundromat and carried their laundry home. The illustration shows them carrying all their things, and when the laundry is done you take it home.

4. Inferential Question: How do the children feel about helping with the laundry? Any logical response such as the ones that follow:  They look happy with smiling faces on many pages.  They really are working at doing their part of the job.  They aren’t fooling around or playing.  They look like they know what to do. They must have done this job before.
