INTRODUCTION The Georgian National Museum (GNM) was established in December 2004 through a presidential decree. Its origins, however, date back to the founding of the Museum of the Caucasian Department of the Russian Royal Geographic Society in 1852. GNM is the administrative umbrella organization overseeing the two research institutions, and the major museums of Georgia, National Gallery, HouseMuseums. The establishment of the Georgian National Museum is considered to be the beginning of structural, institutional, and legal reforms in the field of cultural heritage. The reform envisages introducing modern management schemes and establishing a homogeneous administrative syste. This initiative aims at elaborating a coherent museum policy, improving the safety conditions for preserved collections, strengthening the education policy in the museum field, and coordinating academic and museum activities. The Simon Janashia Museum of Georgia was founded as the Museum of “Caucasian Department of the Russian Royal Geographic Society” in 1852. Today, the Museum operates as a scientific and educational institution that preserves and exhibits a unique collection of natural and human history. The Museum houses a wide range of collections, covering the history of the country, showcasing animal remains dated back to 40 million years ago. The Janashia Museum is housing the Soviet Occupation Museum-showcasing the Soviet period terror against Georgians in the 20th century. This site, too, has been under major renovation and it is expected to be fully operational in 2010. The Shalva Amiranashvili Museum of Fine Arts was established by the beloved Georgian artist Dimitri Shevardnadze in 1920. The Museum’s collection accounts for nearly 900,000 pieces. It includes Georgian goldsmith pieces dated back to the 8th -19th centuries, works of Niko Pirosmanashvili, Lado Gudiashvili, Elene Akhvlediani, David Kakabadze and other well known and adored Georgian artists. The Museum’s collection is complemented by some Russian, European and Oriental (mainly Persian) works of art. The Dmanisi Museum-Reserve is 85 kilometer south east of Tbilisi adjacent to Patara Dmanisi village. The Museum-Reserve comprises of two principal sites: a medieval city with a church, and a major archeological site of international significance, where remains of the humans were unearthed. These remains date back to 1.8 million years, and represent the oldest known proof of human existence as yet discovered outside of Africa. The collections of Dmanisi Museum-Reserve consist of objects discovered during excavations of the medieval town The Site Interpretation Centre opened at Dmanisi MuseumReserve in October of 2009.

The Open Air Museum was founded in 1966 by George Chitaia, a famous Georgian ethnographer and academician. Over a ten-year period, a team of ethnographers worked under his supervision to research, identify and document examples of vernacular regional Georgian architecture, in preparation for their transport to the museum site in Tbilisi The Tbilisi Open Air Museum is the regional center for all other Georgian Open Air museums. This includes the other three branches in mountainous areas of Georgia. These are Chazhashi complex – in Svaneti, Shatili complex- in Khevsureti, and Dartlo complex – in Tusheti. The Open Air Museum often hosts various seasonal folk exhibitions and festivals throughout the year.

The Vani Archaeology Museum-Reserve is located in the town of Vani, Imereti region in western Georgia. The Museum was opened in 1985 by academician Otar Lordkipanidze. Vani archeological site is renowned for the discoveries of VIII-I cc. BC mortuary findings, including exceptional objects of gold and silver, notably some beautiful jewelry. Over the course of the last few years, the beautifully assembled gold collections of the Vani has been traveling to the world’s most well known museums, sharing our Georgian heritage with the world. The National Gallery is located on the nation’s most culturally vibrant Street, Rustaveli. The National Gallery for decades has hosted most culturally entertaining programs. It has been under major renovation in the past couple of years. It is forecasted to open in 2010 and will become one of the most prominent, lively and dynamic art exhibitions spaces in the regional art scene under the auspices of the Georgian The Georgian National Museum is the administrative overseer for the two research institutes of Archeological Research Center and Institute of Paleobiology, serving as the center for scholarly excellence. Since its inception, The GNM research institutions have engaged in a diverse array of research. The work has been done by both Georgian and foreign scientist and the result and findings have been shared with the scientific community as well as the public. The collaborative work with the foreign scholars and their ability to access the research materials from within the institutes in GNM has expanded the ties with other scientific and educational institutions abroad. These kinds of performances are aligned with the fundamental principles of GNM scientific approach into research in the diverse fields of science mentioned above. Additionally, the Georgian National Museum Education Department offers a variety of educational programs for students, teachers and the community of lifelong learners. The educational programs are designed around the museum’s collections, newly arrived exhibits, and current research issues. The courses are specially designed around the individual topic interest and are prepared by the museum educators, staff and the invited instructors. We are pleased and honored to share all of this with you. We apologize for our current under construction appearance. We understand that during the past several years and even today, the ongoing intensive rehabilitation work at different parts and buildings of GNM, at times has unable the public to get familiar with the impressive works of art that is housed here. This book is our first attempt to present a sampling of the magnificent collections stored, preserved and exhibited at the Georgian National Museum. We do hope this catalogue will get us one step closer to a partnership that involves the public with GNM activities in Georgia and abroad, today and in the future. PREHISTORIC EPOCH The prehistoric collection of the Georgian National Museum include about seventy excavated and studied sites, representing all the stages of cultural development on the territory of Georgia through the Stone Age: that is, the Lower and the Upper Palaeolithic, the Mesolithic and the Neolithic periods. The collection was established in 1926. However, sustained excavation from the 1950s onwards continues to enrich the collection down to the present day. These are mainly finds from multi-layer cave and open-air sites. Moreover, the finds from the world-famous site at Dmanisi are kept in the Georgian National Museum. We also keep objects from the sites (cave and open air) of the Acheulean period in West and East Georgia, such as Tsona, Kudaro, Chikiani, Persati, Katskhi region, Satsalike, Iashtkhva, Birtskha, and Lashebalta. The collection also has some material from important Mousterian sites, such as Djruchula, Tsutskhvati, and Ortvala. The Upper Paleolithic artefacts come from West Georgian caves, such as Svanta, Savane, Okumi, Sagvardjile, Sakazhia, Gvardjila’s Klde, Mgvimevi, Khergulis Klde, Taro Klde, Dzudzuana, Samertskhle Klde and others. The final stage of the Paleolithic period, the Mesolithic, is represented by the Barmaxisi collection and the upper layers of Kotias Klde. Odishi and Anaseuli sites exemplify the West Georgian Neolithic period. The early agricultural period in East Georgia is represented by the artefacts from such sites as Shulaveri, Arukhlo, Imiri, Khramis Didi Gora. In addition to stone tools, there are also bone tools, early pottery and unique objects of art in the Stone Age collection.

THE EPOCH OF EARLY METALS There are a lot of significant and substantial collections of the Bronze and Iron Ages in the Georgian National Museum. The Early Bronze Age collections are represented by artefacts of the Kuro-Araxian culture. Cultural monuments of early burial mounds are represented by artefacts from Shida Kartli, Kakheti and Bedeni Plateau, The Middle Bronze Age is represented by objects from the Trialeti burial mounds, while the Late Bronze and Iron Ages include objects from both Eastern and Western Georgia. These are Samtavro burial-ground, Tbilisi monuments, Kakheti temples, the Shida and Kvemo Kartli and Brili burials, the Ureki treasure, and the Mukhurchi burial. All these collections are stored in the Georgian National Museum’s units, particularly the S. Janashia Museum of Georgia, the Sh. Amiranashvili Museum of Fine Arts, and the museums and exhibitions of Dmanisi, Vani, Signagi, Akhaltsikhe and Svaneti. The holdings of the Georgian National Museum are mainly organized by chronological and geographical order. However there are also some holdings arranged by type, notably precicous metals, numismatics and glyptics.

ANTIQUITY The ancient collection stands out among the all the exhibits of the Georgian National Museum. These objects from early history provide a multi-dimensional sense of this important stage of human development. The collection consists of objects in precious metals (gold and silver) as well as precious and semi-precious stones. Moreover, there are objects in stone, bronze, iron, glass, bone and clay. These ancient objects are divided into three chronological sections – early Antiquity, Hellenism and late Antiquity. They include the products of excavations at Vani, Sairkhe, Akhalgori, Algeti, Kazbegi, Takhtisdziri, Dedoplis Gora, Dedoplis Mindori etc. (5th-1st centuries B.C.) Important also are objects from excavations at Mtskheta, Kldeeti, Zhinvali, Zghuderi, Ureki, Bichvinta, Khovle and other sites (1st-4th centuries A.D.). All these sites have furnished unique gold, silver and bronze artefacts. The holdings from Antiquity are kept in various units of the Georgian National Museum, particularly at S. Janashia Museum of Georgiaof Georgiaand Sh. Amiranashvili Museum of Fine Arts, together with the museums at Vani, Signagi, Akhaltsikhe and Svaneti. These holdings comprise not only the fruits of excavation over many years but also special purchases and donations. Together they attest a high level of metal-working in bronze and iron, and craftsmanship in pottery, stone, wood and bone, coin-production, goldsmithing and other fields of artistic craftsmanship. Collections stored in the Georgian National Museum show the indigenous character of the Colchian and Iberian worlds. At the same time, however, the close economic, political and cultural connections between this society and the Graeco-Roman and Near Eastern worlds are very clear indeed.

MIDDLE AGES Both in Tbilisi and in significant regional museums there are important objects from the Medieval period (4th18th centuries A.D.). These include objects cut in stone, goldsmithery, painted icons, and art in wood and bone. There are also illuminated manuscripts, paintings, graphic arts and other illustrations. The main focus of the collection is Christianity in Georgian art. There are also various ecclesiastical treasures from Byzantium, Russia, Western Europe and the Christian East. All these objects were saved by Georgian museums when the country suffered hard times. In this catalogue Mediaeval Art is represented by the objects from the S. Janashia Museum, Sh. Amiranashvili Museum of Fine Arts and Svaneti Museum of History and Ethnography. However, it must be stressed that Mediaeval Art is preserved in all units within the Georgian National Museum. The museum’s holdings were established in the early 19th and 20th. centuries. They were based on the collections of four museums of those times, namely the Caucasian Museum, the Museum of the Society for the Spreading of Literacy, the Church Museum, and the Museum of Indigenous Craftsmanship. Holdings were enlarged through the return of objects which had been removed from Georgia, including especially the treasure taken out of Georgia in 1921, which was brought back in 1945. They were further enlarged through the expeditions of Georgian art experts and by the activities of the Georgian Society of History and Ethnography. A further source of additional objects was the Department. of Georgian Antiquities, set up in Tbilisi State University by Ivane Javakhishvili and Giorgi Chubinashvili. That Department. rescued a lot of objects from the threat of destruction. Numerous exhibits were also donated by private persons. The extensive holdings in Mediaeval Art of the Georgian National Museum display the continuing evolution of craftsmanship (e.g. work in gold, enamel, stone, and monumental paintings) from early Christian times to the late Mediaeval period.

ETNOGRAPHY There are more than 100, 000 ethnographical objects in the Georgian National Museum. The greatest part of them is stored at the S. Janashia Museum. Today, among the holdings of the museum, are stored the national dresses of the peoples of the Caucasus and Middle East. Outstanding among them is the Caucasian national dress called Chokha-Akhaluki. There are also other striking exhibits, such as embroidery and shoes made from materials like skin, wool, fleece, and plant fibre. There is a complete collection of Georgian pottery, which consists of glazed and plain vessels. Holdings also include vessels produced in Daghestan, Iran, Azerbaijan and Armenia. There are also many objects manufactures in glass or porcelain by Gardner and Kuznetsov, as well as Viennese, Bohemian and British factories. Among them are banquet sets and everyday kitchen utensils, both China and faience. There are also many objects in non-ferrous metals. These are mostly kitchen utensils made from copper, silver and pewter. There are also exquisitely made and decorated Persian trays, Turkish glassware, Oriental rugs from various countries, silver plates, goblets, and various donations given to the Church. There is a significant collection of Persian miniatures, painted on ivory, enamelled weapons and everyday objects, figures made from Chinese and European porcelain and finely decorated. There is a fine collection of saddles and harnesses, exquisite carpets, representing different schools of carpet weaving from Persia, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, Kurdistan and the Caucasus. There are weapons from Iran, Turkey, Afghanistan, and Syria, as well as some important pieces from China and Japan. Musical instruments are very numerous. There is a great range of wooden vessels linked to the production and processing of grains, wine, milk, oil and water. There is a great number of all kinds of iron tools. Christian, Islamic, Jewish, Buddhist and other religions are represented by numerous ritual pieces. Many pictures - the works of forty Georgian and Russian artists - depict ethnographic customs and practices. Tilke, Drachenfels, Matiasevich, Kilchevsky, Eisner and Robot are among them. There are also numerous photos and video materials which depict Christian and pagan festivals of Caucasian highlanders.

NEAR AND FAR EAST The Oriental collection in the Georgian National Museum covers a wide geographical and chronological range (notably Egypt, China, Tibet, India, Iran, and Turkey). Georgian society was always interested in Oriental objects. Therefore, ever since the establishment of the Caucasian museum, there were artefacts representing Islamic culture. Holdings have been gradually enlarged through fieldwork, donations and purchases. One of the most ancient items is the Egyptian mummy of the priestess (6 th c. B.C.) and the sarcophagus (11th10th centuries B.C.) which retains two layers of painting. There are also small figurines of the late Egyptian period within the collection. Various excellent artefacts in the collection represent the Far East, such as silk paintings, small plastics, lacquers, miniatures, porcelains, Chinese and Japanese enamelled and lacquered vessels, and various caskets. One of the largest and best sections of the Museum is the Islamic collection. Especially interesting are the early Islamic metalware, the faience and tiles. Textiles and carpets include the products of Persia, India, Central Asia, Azerbaijan and Turkey. Isfahan, Shiraz and Tebriz woollen and silk carpets are of a high artistic value as well as the Kashmiri shawls, Khorossan, Kerman and Resht embroideries, decorated with gold and silver threads and the block print and hand painted Qalamkars. There are miniatures and samples of calligraphy dated to the 15th-19th centuries. The Qajar oil painting collection is one of the best in the world and highlights each step of the development of this unique painting phenomenon. Lacquer and enamel paintings (from the 17th-20th Centuries) include numerous objects of the decorative and applied arts (caskets, pen cases, mirror frames etc.). Today the Oriental and Islamic collection is on display in Shalva Amiranashvili Museum of Fine Arts, but much is divided between the various departments and the storagefacility in the S. Janashia Museum of Georgiaof Georgiaof Georgia and the Shalva Amiranashvili Museum of Fine Arts, all within the Georgian National Museum.

WESTERN EUROPE There are many valuable exhibits in the collection of the European Art at S. Amiranashvili Museum of Fine Arts. It was built up thanks to the energy of Dimitri Shevardnadze and Shalva Amiranashvili. In 1927 the Museum purchased the 14th century polyptych of Paolo Veneziano, the founder of the Venetian school. This piece, one of the most significant exhibits of the collection, was brought from Italy by the Georgian poetess Elisabet Orbeliani. The triptych of Bernardo Dadi, a representative of the Proto-Renaissance belongs to the same period. Further, there are a lot of paintings of the Italian Renaissance and of the European painting schools of the 17th-18th centuries. Among them are Dutch, Flemish, German, French and Spanish works. Especially important in artistic terms is the painting by the well-known representative of the German Renaissance Lucas Kranach, entitled ‘Procuress’. This was a theme of widespread populaity in European Art of that time, but Kranach’s picture it is handled with particular aplomb. Meanwhile, the painting of the representative of the Dutch school, Jacob van Ruisdael, entitled ‘Landscape with the Falls’ once again confirms the significance of this collection. Along with the paintings in the collection there are many further examples of the graphic arts from Europe. There are engravings by the great Dutch artist Rembrandt, as well as Jacques Callot, who represents French art of the 17th century. There is also a portrait of the Georgian artist Niko Pirosmanishvili. This portrait is the work of Pablo Picasso, for the book “Pirosmanashvili 1914” by Illya Zdanevich. It is a good example of dry needle technique. The collection of European art at S. Amiranashvili Museum of Fine Arts is wide-ranging and valuable in artistic terms. It shows quite thoroughly the main stages of the development of European art, so that it is a major attraction for art-lovers.

MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY PERIOD The collection of modern and contemporary Georgian art at Sh. Amiranashvili Museum of Fine Arts in the Georgian National Museum contains some significant works. This collection covers the second half of 18 th century down to 21st century and includes both Georgian and non-Georgian artists who lived and worked in the fine arts in Georgia. In 1916 the “Society of Georgian Artists” was set up. At the same time the well-known artist and man-of-culture Dimitri Shevardnadze started to collect exhibits for the future Museum of Fine Arts. For decades the museum collection had been enlarged with the works of famous artists. It contains paintings, the graphic arts, sculpture and various examples of the applied arts. Now, the collection of modern and contemporary art is kept at the Sh.Amiranashvili Museum of Fine Arts, at the I. Grishashvili Museum of the History of Tbilisi (Karavansarai), and at the house-museums of Elene Akhvlediani, Mose Toidze, Iakob Nikoladze, Ucha Japaridze. Among the earlest paintings of modern Georgian art, the portrait of ‘Nino, the daughter of Georgian nobleman Tornike, the Eristavi of Ksani’ deserves a mention. This portrait manifests the style of Georgian art of its time. The portrait of the Georgian Prince Alexander of the 18th century, the work of an unknown artist, shows the next stage of the development of this genre. Exceptionally numerous and significant in the collection of the museum are the paintings of Niko Pirosmani. Pirosmani’s art was based on the traditions of mediaeval Georgian art, which it brings together with tendencies of the avant-garde. As for the Georgian realist Gigo Gabashvili, all his paintings and drawings were presented to the Sh. Amiranashvili Museum of Fine Arts by his succesors after his death. Over the years the collection has been enlarging by the works of Dimitri Shevardnadze, Mose Toidze, Shalva Kikodze, Lado Gudiashvili, Davit Kakabadze, Ketevan Maghalashvili and Elene Akhvlediani. The collection also contains sketches of the works of well-known Georgian theatrical artists – Irakli Gamkreli and Solomon (Soliko) Virsaladze. A very special position in the collection is occupied by the works of the founder of modern Georgian sculpture, Yakob Nikoladze. There are also the works of contemporary Georgian artists which fully shows development of Georgian art.
