General Instructions

SAY

Today we are going to do two things. First, I will ask you to look at some patterns and then

I will ask you the meaning of some words. DO

Point at the first problem, A1, and place it in front of the examinee.

SAY

Look at this.

DO

Point to the upper figure.

SAY

You see, it is a pattern with a piece cut out of it. Each of these pieces below…

DO

Point to each in turn

SAY … is the right shape to fill the space, but only one of them is the right pattern. Number 1 is the right shape, but is not the right pattern. Number 2 is not a pattern at all. Number 3 is quite wrong. Number 6 is nearly right, but is wrong here. DO Point to the white piece in Number 6. SAY Only one is right. You point to the piece that is correct to complete the pattern. DO Wait for the examinee to point and then record their answer on the Record Form under Set A, question 1, by putting a line through the number they have chosen. The examinee should point to number 4. If the examinee does not point to the right piece, continue your explanation until the nature of the problem is clearly grasped. Turn to problem A2.

2

Point to the missing space in the upper figure. SAY Now point to the piece that goes in here. DO If the examinee fails to do so correctly, re-demonstrate problem A1 and request again an answer for problem A2. Please be sure to demonstrate A1 again. Do not give the examinee the answer for A2. Record their final response and then continue, whether they have answered correctly or not.

Turn to problem A3 and proceed as for A2. Remember to demonstrate A1 again if they are unable to complete A3 correctly. Do not give the answer for A3.

3

At problem A4, before the child has time to point to one of the pieces… SAY

Look carefully at these pieces.

DO

Move your fingers across the six pieces at the bottom of the page.

SAY

Only one of these pieces is right to complete the pattern. Be careful. Look at each of the six

pieces first. DO

Point to each of the six pieces.

SAY

Now you point to the right one to go in here.

DO Point to the space in the upper figure. When the child has pointed to one of the six pieces, whether it is right or not… SAY Is that the right one to go in here? DO If the examinee says ‘yes’, accept the choice, whether right or wrong. If he or she wishes to change the choice… SAY All right. Point to the one that is right. DO Whether the answer is right or wrong again… SAY Is that the right one? DO If the examinee is satisfied, whether the choice is right or wrong, accept that choice, but if there seems to be doubt… SAY Which do you really think is the right one? DO Put a short single line through the number of the final choice on the Record Form.

4

Demonstrate problem A5 in the same way as Problem A4. At any stage between A1 and A5, problem A1 can be used to illustrate what has been done, with the request that the child try again.

Turn to A6.

SAY Look at the pattern carefully, Now, which of these pieces… DO Point to each of the six pieces at the bottom of the page in turn. SAY … goes in here? DO Point to the space to be filled. SAY Be careful, only one is right. Which one is it? Be sure you find the right one before you point to it. DO Record the answer finally given. Present each further problem in Set A giving the same instructions as long as they serve a useful purpose. If the child seems to get stuck on a particular item, ask them to guess, ‘as guesses are sometimes correct’.

Point to the six pieces at the bottom of the page.

SAY

Be careful. Look at each one in turn. Only one is right. Which one is it?

DO In problems AB1 to AB5, after the examinee has pointed to one of the pieces, whether it is right or wrong… SAY

Is that the right one to complete the pattern?

DO Point to the pattern and the space to be filled. As before, if the answer is ‘yes’, accept (and record) the choice with approval. If the examinee wishes to change the choice, proceed as in Set A, and accept the one finally adhered to as right. For the sixth problem the examinee should not be asked if the answer chosen is right. Simply…. SAY Look carefully at the pattern. DO Point to each of the three figures on the pattern in turn and the space to be filled. SAY Be careful. Only one of these pieces completes the pattern properly. DO Point to the six pieces at the bottom of the page. SAY Which one is it?
