MAIN EXCURSION The Colourful South This excursion is an insight into a different taste of Mauritian scenery. From the centre of Curepipe, a tarred road leads gently up to and round the rim of Trou-aux-Cerfs, an extinct volcanic crater, whose floor is now heavily wooded. From there, you will enjoy a magnificent view over the whole island and its mountain ranges.

The drive south takes to Grand-Bassin (Ganga Talao), the Ganges reincarnate and pilgrimage place for the Hindu. The trip continues through the forest reserve of PlaineChampagne, with a stop at a viewpoint over the spectacular Black River Gorges. As you travel through thick Chinese Guava groves, you arrive at Varangue sur Morne, the halt for lunch. Perched like a silver butterfly over a sea of greenery and originally a gamekeeper‟s lodge, this restaurant offers a breathtaking view over the South and West, where the only surviving native forest of the island is found. After an enjoyable lunch, make your way through “Trochetia” nature trail to see some endemic and medicinal plants.

The tour continues with the discovery the magnificent Chamarel waterfall emerging from the moors on the way down to the unique seven-coloured earths of Chamarel. The unusual mounds of undulating land stretching in contrasting rainbow coloured layers of earth are believed to be the result of weathering and volcanic origin. On the way back, stop at a viewpoint overlooking Morne Mountain and Benitiers Island.

OPTIONAL EXCURSIONS Tropical Spices – Half Day A must for any visitor: Pamplemousses Botanical Gardens created by French naturalist Pierre Poivre in 1767. The Chateau de Mon Plaisir, built in 1735, can still be seen there. Often called the “Jewel in the Crown”, the garden is known by world botanists for its 500 rare plant species from all over the world. The most famous are the giant Victoria Regina water lilies and the 80 varieties of palm trees, including the talipot, said to flower once every 60 years and then die. Today the garden houses the “samadhi” (funeral shrine) of the Father of the Nation, Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam.

From there you head for a tour of the capital, Port-Louis, founded in 1735 by Mahé de Labourdonnais. A photo stop at La Citadelle, an old fortress built in 1834, will give you a panoramic view of the Champ de Mars, the second oldest race-course in the world, as well as the blend of modern and ancient buildings squeezed between the harbour and the mountain range. Off the main square, palm-lined Place d‟Armes, there are some particularly fine colonial buildings, like the Government House (1735) and the Municipal Theatre (1822) as well as two Cathedrals, Catholic and Anglican, a Mosque, the Supreme Court and the Natural History Museum.

Visit Caudan Waterfront, a modern precinct facing the harbour. Its 170 boutiques display beautiful collections of local designers and famous brands. It‟s Craft market is an open bazaar, impregnated by exotic scents of spices, souvenirs and basket work… Since 2007, an extension, Dias Pier, named after a famous Portuguese explorer, houses fifty shops, a Resto-café-wine bar and a Sushi-sandwich-wine bar. It is also possible to visit the colourful covered market of Port-Louis with its fascinating cross-section of Mauritian life.
