A long time ago, in a big castle, a king lived with his beautiful queen. One day, the beautiful queen made a picture with a needle and thread. She sat by the window. It was very cold and there was lots of snow. The beautiful queen opened the window and looked out. Suddenly she saw three drops of red blood on the perfect white snow. ‘Oh! I pricked my finger!’ she cried. 3

The beautiful queen looked at the blood and the snow. ‘Soon I will have a baby and it will be a little girl. I will call her Snow White. Her skin will be as white as snow. Her lips will be as red as blood and her hair will be as black as the night,’ she said.

When the baby came, it was a little girl. The beautiful queen called her Snow White. Her skin was as white as snow. Her lips were as red as blood and her hair was as black as the night. But the beautiful queen became very ill and she died when Snow White was young. 5
