Book review & Foreword by Peter Tase1 While Reading Sabahudin Hadzialic‘s ―South East Europe at the Edge of Civilization,‖ a book published in 2016, United States of America draws the attention of the ―developed North‖ towards the Balkans and its endemic obstacles, artificially created barriers and prevailing apathy, corruption and organized crime. The very crime and drug trafficking that is even helping to finance the operations of the Islamic State in the Middle East and the Levant. In his essay entitled ―‖Create Problems and Then Offer Solutions―, Sabahudin depicts the exact stereotype of Balkan politics by sharing with us, the reader, a high level of corruption in Croatia, at a time when Zagreb's mayor was being investigated for corruption. Sabahudin emphases: ―The story of the Mayor of Croatian capital city in 20141

2015, Mr. Milan Bandić, instead of being just a problem of the Court and Prosecutor‘s offices, exactly thanks to the two methods mentioned above became a problem nationwide. The country is full of corruption, with hatred being expressed against others who are different, nepotism and legally elected thieves are rife‖. Similar corruption cases such as the one of Mr. Bandić in Croatia are so spread not only in Zagreb but throughout the Balkans: from Stara Planina Mountain range, Botev Mountain top, to Durres, the city where Via Egnatia begun to take shape in the II century B.C. Hadzialic‘s book takes us in an adventurous walk, through the dark woods of shame, unveils the characters of all those corrupted personae‘s who would not get along, even for a split of a second, with Dirty Harry Callahan, had he been around in the Balkans, especially Albania, Kosovo and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Just like Scorpio, a character in the very same action thriller movie entitled ―Dirty Harry‖, politicians ripe the fruits of such an infinite nepotism that they enjoy within the corridors of rotten justice systems that operate in their respective countries. In order to tackle such tragic social depressions in the Balkans, there are required conscious citizens like all of those reading the following lines of Sabahudin Hadzialic, as well as consolidated European Union and locally established institutions that would embrace the effectiveness of ―Dirty Harry‖ in the war against crime, human trafficking, corruption and above all the decades long abuse with public money. Societies of Bosnia and Herzegovina, together with the other ten nations of the Balkans, must commend the courageous initiative of Sabahudin Hadzialic. Hadzialic for breaking apart the yolk of outrageous injustice in this ancient part of Europe; his courageous writing and down to earth examples bring South East Europe much closer to the far distant audiences in the Americas that have

no reliable information about such a socially backwards but a minerals-rich region of the world. Sabahudin, perhaps the only living visionary and Kantian writer of Bosnia and Herzegovina, is a genuine ambassador of the Balkans who strives to improve the lives and welfare of his fellow countrymen and beyond, by effectively employing his powerful words and breathtaking concepts that could certainly lift up the Balkan nations from the dark abyss of submission, nepotism, corruption and their unscrupulous politicians‘ greed. Essay No 1. (5.12.2014) Depending Who You Ask I wanted to be a joker, and became a clown … The problem with Europe‘s South-Slav areas — when talking about the observance and assessment of viewership, ratings, and primetime — appears to be not different at all from the area of, for example, the developed North. To demonstrate this, please, allow me to ask how many of you, dear readers, knows the name of a young man and a girl who have been killed by A.B. (77 of them killed 2011 from Norway – do not want to give him another opportunity for advertising?) Out of 100 (one hundred) of you, it may be 2 (two) of you, and solely due to family or professional ties to the above event would know the name of one of them. However, everyone knows the full name of the animal B. That is why my disappointment is even greater when I see that a public broadcaster, which bears the name of Federal Television of Bosnia and Herzegovina, giving the space within the duration of feature extremely watched TV show ―Honestly‖ (amazing word: ―Honestly‖) on a 1st day of the month of December within Anno Domini 2014. They gave space to another animal, V.Š. (whose name also I do not want to draw up to the surface, to avoid again advertisement of something that is really advertisement for committing evil) at the same time doing nothing on the air to be 9

different, more professional, from the neighborhood‘s media (from other countries of the Former Yugoslavia). There are so many lamentations were in and around V.Š. that we are free to call all of the above on his return from The Hague Court reincarnation of insanity. It is immaterial whether the world wanted to send a message to Serbia due to non-introduction of sanctions against Russia, and Serbia will never do that (as I said on Friday, 28.11.2014. in an interview to Radio Sputnik-in, the former Voice of Russia in English) because Slav will never go against Slav, unless we are not talking about territories, or, pardon, assimilation. It is immaterial whether the return of war Duke of the extreme orientations had the aim of even destabilizing the whole region. It is immaterial whether we go back twenty years and that is again in front of us opening the gates of hell on what somebody calls – the war. However, it is very much important that the public service, FTV, through amateur, unprofessional and absurd way represents the animal V.Š. during primetime broadcasting, while the country(s) of former Yugoslavia still did not reach desirable levels of GDP, which at the very end of it had the growth of above mentioned former state.

10

However, it is very much important that the public service, FTV, through amateur, unprofessional and absurd way represents animal V.Š. during primetime broadcasting, while speaking about the ideology of one flawed personality, forget that just 10 months ago was burned a building of the State Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, because of the hunger citizens and the people of this country. And when we talk about Serbia and Croatia, relations and attitude towards V.Š. to talk about V.Š. within that shape of the manifestation is negligible. For what reason is that? Because they were together: V.Š. and V.Š. with the same initials and one comes from Zagreb and the other one is from Belgrade. And they were the ideologues of Greater Serbia, but also of the Great Croatia. Neither of them had been sentenced for mentioned misbehavior. Would they? It‘s hard to say. Why? Remember Saddam Hussein and Hosni Mubarak. Do their people feel better today, since the introduction of democracy? The answer is erased by the storm, as a desert, as well as a planetary kind of non sense. While V.Š. from Serbia, within the desire to be the Joker, became the Clown. What about us? Les Miserables, who are laughing so hard, to tears, only laughing, not to the clown, but to ourselves. 11

Essay No 2. (20.12.2014) ‘Freaks’ In and Around US Embassy My dear mother! There are a lot of symbolic reflections within Bosnia and Herzegovina that might also be observed around the region of South East-Europe, but it looks like there is only one very specific case to Americans, and locals, within the US Embassy in Sarajevo.Immediately there comes to mind as a much bigger issue the Enhanced Interrogation Techniques, which brings to light more than anything else what has been done in Bosnia and Herzegovina by US officials (I have to here underline those US people, and especially respected voices of those who did place enormous pressure on the US government to stop the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina back in the nineties). That said, please allow me to make a small introduction to the title of this essay. Richard Holbrooke, the so-called ‗Almighty‘ of the Dayton Peace Agreement that ended the war of 1992-1995 in BiH made a huge mistake in Dayton? Which one? He let the same people who conducted the war, to negotiate the peace. Sociologically, politically and even in a humanitarian way of thinking, this should not have happened. Why? The answer you can see almost twenty years later in the current Bosnia and Herzegovina, about which I have been writing in Eurasia Review this past year and that is published in recent book ‗Bosnia and Herzegovina and the XXI Century‘. The mistakes of U.S. government officials are not based on the non-willingness to conduct the proper way of 12

establishing the so-called ‗Democracy‘, which I called a long time ago ‗Demo(n)cracy‘ (Question: Am I fundamentalist if I say that real democracy – or just the announcement of such – exists only in Iceland, Sweden, Norway and/or Finland?). Democracy, according to my humble opinion, is the state of acting (and mind, of course) in which my freedom does not threaten the freedom of others, and it stops immediately if I base my freedom on cancelling and hindering the freedom of others. Just check out the World of the XXI Century and the answer will be given. So, to make a long story short, US government officials‘ mistakes are always based on ignorance and an emptiness of local people‘s thoughts, conclusions, culture and knowledge. Question: When was the last time when you met a US Embassy official walking around the old part of Sarajevo, titled ‗Bašĉaršija‘ (rough translation is ‗Just the city‘ or ‗Just the place of living and working‘) while talking to the locals, except those individuals whom they hire? Never, or just only when some US Government official arrives in Bosnia and Herzegovina who wants to taste ćevapcic, baklava and other traditional foods, and of course to be seen by the local media on the streets of a ruined city. The locals who work for them?

13

As a person who worked for almost seven years for the International community in Bosnia and Herzegovina (19932000) I can simply say, but strongly have to underline: 65 percent of the local employees for the International organization in Bosnia and Herzegovina has been instructed to be there and serve indirectly local powers regardless if they were Bosniaks (Muslim), Croats and Serbs from Bosnia and Herzegovina. What does this mean? The ignorance of the so-called CIA, NASA, MI, NI and so many other acronyms of the great intelligence organizations from United States of America did not do their job. Or did they? We will never know. Why? It is simply irresistible to answer: ignorance. Then we come in medias res of the essay, which is an example of the total disaster of American policy in Bosnia and Herzegovina (with the help of locals). Recently, I wanted to share a presentation and valuable ideas about electronic government that could very well be implemented by the Government of Bosnia and Herzegovina with the help of USAID and the US Embassy in Sarajevo. I, along with my colleague and friend, Peter Tase, a US citizen, a scholar and journalist, on December 11, 2014 were to present (remember the word ―presentation‖, please) a potential project for Establishing the E-Government Initiative in Bosnia and Herzegovina. But — and it seems there is a always a ‗but‘. 14

Everything began back on October 29, when on behalf of Peter — who was coming to Bosnia and Herzegovina in December 2014, to promote his book ‗The Image of Paraguay in the United States 2012-2014‘ and my book as I mentioned above — I sent an e-mail to US officials at the US Embassy in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The answer back came not from US officials, but from the local Project Management Specialist from USAID/Bosnia and Herzegovina (whom I do not want to mention her name) who was very nice in her correspondence with Peter — and later with me — in regards to arranging a meeting for the above-mentioned presentation on which I was working, since I had just returned from Kazakhstan, a government that is very advanced with respect to doing everything on-line (and which hosted in October 2014 the World E-Government forum). The idea of the presentation was simple: Through the establishment of E-government in Bosnia and Herzegovina we would connect not just a ruined country, but also the ruined people(s) of Bosnia and Herzegovina and improve their living conditions in a well-organized society where they could get any document they needed within a matter of hours, and not in weeks or months. As we had previously agreed we were scheduled to meet on Thursday, 11.12.2014 at the US Embassy, we thought that we would be able to deliver the presentation of 15

30 slides containing our joint proposal, on which we had been working for over two months. Nevertheless, problems began right in front of the gate at the US Embassy of Sarajevo. First, one police officer said that we could park on the sidewalk adjacent to the walls of the embassy, right next to the main entrance of the embassy, even though there was a sign that prohibited the parking of vehicles there. But soon another police officer arrived, and was very aggressive towards us — and indeed almost ate me alive — just after I had parked our vehicle, and told us that we couldn‘t park there and continued, ―in regards to my opinion, you can park on Skenderija (note: 2 kilometers away) if you want to, but here you cannot park.‖ I had to move the vehicle 400 meters away to a paid parking lot while my colleagues (Peter Tase and Goran Vrhunc) waited on a cold winter day wearing only regular suits (without any coats). Problems only increased when we entered the control gates and moved toward the embassy‘s metal detectors — which was even more protected than a guarded customs area at a major airport anywhere in the world. Having in mind that I am a Muslim (Bosniak), I expected that I would be thoroughly searched as a possible ‗terrorist‘, because you are guilty until is proved differently. As said, I expected this — and certainly kept in mind that 16

the US policy in the world is making more enemies than friends recently — but, what I did not expect was that they would treat my colleague Peter Tase as a possible terrorist and thoroughly search his body for an extended time. Additionally, I had thought that the USAID‘s representative who had exchanged many emails with me, would come and welcome us at the security check point. Not so. Goran, meanwhile, was still waiting outside to be invited to go through a meticulous search. It seems the problem was with the word, as I mentioned previously, ―presentation.‖ Namely, when I was in a position to be thoroughly searched, a problem appeared. I was asked to leave my laptop in the security check point. Okay. But, when I was asked to leave my USB with the security officer it became obvious that it was pointless to attend a meeting without showing a Power Point presentation. While I was explaining this to the local female police officer our escort suddenly appeared, as I was told, to take us to the main building. She again repeated the same adage that we did not agree to bring the USB to our meeting at the embassy. I repeated again that I am an Assistant Professor at a University, and had always used the word ―presentation‖ in my emails. 17

To which she stated, ―you have not written that you will bring the USB.‖ My response was that a Project Management Specialist should know what I was talking about when stating that I would give a presentation, as we did days ago at other institutions in Sarajevo. To which she suggested that ―we can have a chat.‖ How is it possible that USB with the size of 1cm x 2cm can threaten a world power? This blew my mind. Peter then entered the security check point, and again they requested his ID and then exited the armored room of the check point. Meanwhile, Goran was still standing outside confused, probably asking himself, what was going on inside. In the end, we simply said that we would not go and have a chat (we were prepared to make concrete suggestions and give a serious presentation) and that we would inform the public about their rude behavior and we exited. My colleagues had to wait outside of the entrance to the main gate in a subzero temperature with a freezing wind, which made Peter have a terrible pain in his ears that would continue for days, while I went to pick up our car. 18

Finally, last but not least, what is the outcome of all of this? At the outset we thought that it might be good for US Foreign Policy — since the US is the main coordinator of the Dayton Peace Agreement — to promote an egovernment initiative in the most politically complicated country on Earth. But, it the end, we decided to explore other venues to move forward with such a dynamic project of e-government in Bosnia and Herzegovina, because the US Embassy staff is overshadowed by local unprofessional ‗advisers‘ who distort the true realities of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The US Embassy staff is simply: 1. Controlled by local feudalistic, arrogant and ignorant people who have been threatened by our proposal; Or 2. Are certainly uninformed in regards to the means of a real communication process that is used to convey ideas, and exchange experiences among intellectuals while using the US Embassy as the launching point of this exciting initiative. Or 19

3. All above, including ‗1‘and ‗2‘ Where is the answer? That is the million dollar question. That is the amount of money that Bosnia Herzegovina loses every month if it does not implement the e-government project very soon. E-government is here to come, regardless with or without us. The ―Presentation‖ was the problem. Especially when it comes from someone who knows what is doing. An aspiration and a Presentation destined for the benefit of my nation and the common good — unlike many others whose goal is for personal profit, and do not bring anything new to the table. Unfortunately, freaks in and around the US Embassy in Bosnia and Herzegovina did not see its content. Or perhaps they do not want to.

Essay No 3. (2.01.2015) Good Old Times Why do we all around the world say the phrase, ―Good old times‖ every time when we are faced with some problem? The answer is not within the superficial ―because…it was better,‖ but in the very clear point of view that, simply, every new period of time is getting worse and worse. Probably our time period will be for somebody, in the future, again, ―good old times‖. When we see the year that is passing by us – 2014 within the South-East Europe, I can say that we are living in ―the most messed up time of all‖, having in mind the protests in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the flooding in Croatia, Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, nearly 1.5 million unemployed within the above-mentioned countries and, above all, politicians who do not know if they have ―come back or gone away‖. Of course, the NATION is the one who will liberate us…the NATION is the one who will protect our souls, but…LUSTRATION is the biggest problem of the ―good old times‖ in the area of former Yugoslavia. If lustration had been conducted properly and right on time, we would not have a social, political and even a national situation that is getting worse and worse as the years pass.

21

Neo-liberalism is here to stay, but what to expect from former communists? Can we expect from them to implement capitalism? Did we ever, by all means, have real capitalism within the area of the former Yugoslavia in the last 24 years? No…No…We had — and we are having — first the accumulation of capital in the late feudalism era where, basically, tycoons are threatening employees that they will be replaced with the army of unemployed if they do not obey and accept small and ridiculous salaries. Politicians are here collateral damage, together with the people, but collateral damage who, together with tycoons, are creating an environment where 200 workers from Tuzla in Bosnia and Herzegovina just a couple a day‘s tried to leave the country (because they have lost their jobs) and went to Croatia seeking bread (and were returned back from the border and received 110 Euros in one time support). Tried to go to Croatia? In the country where the situation is even worse from where just in 2014 fled 30,000 young people (where 60% of pre-school children are hungry every day) to the European Union countries seeking for a better life. Or, maybe they might have gone to Serbia, in the country where populism of the political leaders cannot feed the army of hungry and unemployed people. At the same time, freedom of the press is under pressure within these countries, while prosecutors and courts are 22

serving the politicians instead of serving the people and the good of the countries. No need to mentioned examples — it is enough just to type ―freedom of the press and the name of each country above‖. So, what is the solution? As simple as it seems, the solution is to try to do: 1. Lustration (to protect the country from the former communists and its parts). 2. Rule of law to be implemented by independent judicial system established on continental law rules – responsibility to the people, for the people, of the people. 3. Strong and independent prosecutors offices and intelligence services who will conduct impartial research and check out ―the first million‖ of the local tycoons. Prosecute them and get back the money to be invested in the development of the economy of the area. We did not mentioned word ―democracy‖. Why? Because, I am underlining, there is no democracy in the area of former Yugoslavia. Here we have just a reflection, not even the first step. Instead ―one worshiping leader‖ as in good old times, every nation has its own ―worshiping leader‖. Blind one. 23

Again, how we will implement those above mentioned remarks? No way at all! Why, because the people, the noneducated livestock need a Shepherd to lead them to the canyon of death while they are voting again and again ―against‖, instead of ―for‖ prosperity of its kind. Methodology is very cruel – There is no really way out from the Balkan Peninsula way of living, except, maybe one: education, education, education. Education will allow us to be able to understand what they are doing to us. ―They‖ are Serbs, Croats and Bosnians (Muslim) who became the biggest believers ever – while, just a couple a decades ago they were the biggest atheists. Good old times – indeed, above all, Happy New 1815 Year, my dear fellow citizens of former Yugoslavia. Essay No 5. (22.01.2015) Kemal Monteno: A Legend has died, but hope arises … does it? It is a real pity to see how pain can only unite the area of South-East Europe! In the Spring of 2014 the flood of a century united the area of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia and Serbia and on this January 21, unification went even further, after the death of the legend, a famous singer and song writer from Sarajevo, Kemal Monteno, who died at the age of 66 at the Croatian hospital in Zagreb (Croatia) born in Sarajevo (Bosnia and Herzegovina). 24

Yes, within his soul you had everything what nationalistic exclusivity wanted, and who even today want to destroy: identity of unification: a mixture of Catholicism (father – Italian) and Islam (mother – Bosnian Muslim) with a touch of the Orthodox (through his wife – Bosnian Serb); altruism; love for the country(ies) – identification with the people of Slovenia, Croatia, Montenegro, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia. In one word: the area of former Yugoslavia. Today, all the major regional news agencies wrote about Kemal Monteno: 1. Daily DNEVNI AVAZ, Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina (Federation BiH) 2. Daily NEZAVISNE NOVINE, Banja Luka, Bosnia and Herzegovina (Republic of Srpska) 3. Daily POLITIKA, Belgrade, Serbia 4. Daily 24 SATA, Zagreb, Croatia 5. VIJESTI ONLINE, Podgorica, Montenegro 6. RTV SLOVENIA, Ljubljana, Slovenia So, we should all again and again listen to his songs of love, unification that lack any harsh and tough words of hatred and exclusiveness. So, we should all re-think again, and try to be like ―Kemo‖, who united us once more – in pain.

25

So, we should put aside all the stupidity of everyday life of nationalism and mediocrity and instead try to focus at least, for once, on humanity. Kemal Monteno was a human. He belongs to everybody, to all of us — as we all should all belong to each other, regardless that we are from different ―nations‖. Can we be like him? At least we must try to be. Unfortunately, as of tomorrow, on above news links the hatred will, just in different size and volume, like a waves of destiny, again continue to destroy the already destructed humanity. Yugoslavia sent a message to the world once upon a time. The world did not listen. That is why the Balkanization virus is all around the world now. And Kemal Monteno has died. Even while he was singing a song titled, ―We eternally swear that we will not deflect from your path‖ (singing about Josip Broz Tito, most noble dictator of Socialist Federal republic of Yugoslavia back in 1980, in the year of his death).

Essay No 6. (4.02.2015) Syriza as a Weak Alternative Without Addendum Can we expect any reflection of the ―Syriza storm‖ from Greece on the area of neighborhood countries within SouthEast Europe: Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro, Kosovo*, Macedonia, Albania? The answer is complex: Maybe, but… Why? Because of the lack of an adequate education system in regards to advantages and disadvantages of socialism and/or capitalism (Communism, as the final stage of equality within the possible establishment of equality of humanity 27

has never existed anywhere in the world, so no need to talk about that). There should be found a middle road to paradise. Or to hell? Who knows? The time will show, but… Even in Greece, people voted ―against‖, instead of ―for‖. They have voted against the disaster of capitalism, without knowing what it is that Syriza, the very radical left-wing party, will bring to them. On this backdrop it would be good to review the original 40 points of Syriza‘s program and possible realization of it within the area of South East Europe: Audit of the public debt and renegotiation of interest dues and suspension of payments until the economy has revived and growth and employment has returned. Neo-liberalism has deeply occupied South-East Europe and public debt is near 100 billion Euros and no visible government in any of the countries is an opponent to ―Big brother‖ (IMF and others from European banking system). Demand the European Union to change the role of the European Central Bank so that it finances States and programs of public investment. There is a significant power that is ready to move forward in the area of South-East Europe. 28

Raise income tax to 75% for all incomes over 500,000 Euros. Exactly the same thing should be done for the area of South-East Europe where the transition period has brought to power at least 200 of the richest families within each country of SEE. But, who will do so? Change the election laws to a proportional system. Different election laws within the SEE request a different approach, but essentially it should be focused on the above mentioned, having in mind to implement the control of the elected candidates and parties after the election within the framework of the law. Increase taxes on big companies to that of the European average. Excellent idea that should be implemented on the SEE Area. But, who will do so within SEE? Adoption of a tax of financial transactions and a special tax on luxury goods. By all means. Again, are the governments of SEE ready to do so?

29

Prohibition of speculative financial derivatives. This would kill corruption and money laundering within the SEE, but who will do so? Abolition of financial privileges for the Church and shipbuilding industry. Excellent in regards to the abolition of financial privileges for the Church, and other religions based on SEE. But, having in mind the connections of politics with religion in post-transition countries of the SEE, who will do so? Combat the banks‘ secret [measures] and the flight of capital abroad. Find the way to do so as well within SEE area, but who will do so? Drastically cut military expenditures. Exactly the same for SEE. Raise minimum wage to the pre-cut level, 750 Euros per month. Depending on the area of development of the country of SEE, increase at least up to 30 % of the current minimum salary per month. Who is ready to do so?

30

Use buildings of the government, banks and the Church for the homeless. By all means, but also include extra areas of the richest within the area for the above purposes. But, who will do so? Open dining rooms in public schools to offer free breakfast and lunch to children. Having in mind how many children are hungry in SEE, exactly same thing should be done. Free health benefits to the unemployed, homeless and those with low salaries. Yes. The Problem is; who will do so? Subvention up to 30% of mortgage payments for poor families who cannot meet payments. Yes, exactly the same thing for SEE, but first find the cause and fight against it. Increase of subsidies for the unemployed. Increase social protection for one-parent families, the aged, disabled, and families with no income. Yes, the same for SEE, but who will do so? Fiscal reductions for goods of primary needs. 31

Yes, the same for SEE, but who will do so? Nationalization of banks. Country of Iceland is an excellent example. Should be done, but who will do so in SEE? Nationalization of ex-public (service & utilities) companies in strategic sectors for the growth of the country (railroads, airports, mail, water). Yes, but how to do it and return back /into the future in SEE and who will do it? Preference for renewable energy and defending the environment. By all means, but who will do it in SEE? Equal salaries for men and women. Yes, and should be the priority in SEE: Limitation of precarious hiring and support for contracts for indeterminate time. Yes, again ―back into the future‖ for SEE and who will do it?

32

Extension of the protection of labor and salaries of part-time workers. Yes, but how and who will do it? Recovery of collective (labor) contracts. Yes, and again ―back to the future‖ needs a machine for that and who will do it within SEE? Increase inspections of labor and requirements for companies making bids for public contracts. This is killing corruption, but all countries of SEE are so corrupted that the question is who will do it? Constitutional reforms to guarantee separation of Church and State and protection of the right to education, health care and the environment. Underline this for SEE, but who will do it? Referendums on treaties and other accords with Europe. Yes, and should be very careful on this one in SEE. Abolition of privileges for members of parliament. Removal of special juridical protection for ministers and ensure permission for the courts to proceed against members of the government. 33

Yes, exactly the same thing for SEE. Demilitarization of the Coast Guard and anti-insurrectional special troops. Prohibition for police to wear masks or use fire arms during demonstrations. Change training courses for police so as to underline social themes such as immigration, drugs and social factors. Yes, the same thing for SEE. Guarantee human rights in immigrant detention centers. Yes, the same thing for SEE. Facilitate the reunion of immigrant families. Yes, the same thing for SEE. De-penalization of consumption of drugs in favor of battle against drug traffic. Increase funding for drug rehab centers. Yes, the same thing for SEE. Regulate the right of conscientious objection in draft laws. Yes, the same thing for SEE. Increase funding for public health up to the average European level. (The European average is 6% of GDP; in Greece 3%.) 34

Yes, the same thing for SEE. Elimination of payments by citizens for national health services. Yes, the same thing for SEE. Nationalization of private hospitals. Elimination of private participation in the national health system. Yes, the same thing for SEE. Withdrawal of Greek troops from Afghanistan and the Balkans. No Greek soldiers beyond our own borders. No SEE soldiers beyond SEE countries borders Abolition of military cooperation with Israel. Support for creation of a Palestinian State within the 1967 borders. Yes, having in mind SEE‘s problems with borders. Negotiation of a stable accord with Turkey. SEE must respect everything that is agreed between Greece and Turkey. Closure of all foreign bases in Greece and withdrawal from NATO.

35

Stop arrangements like the establishment of NATO bases, if there is any, within SEE. Of course, the question continues to rise and it is WHO IS CAPABLE TO DO SO WITHIN THE AREA OF SOUTHEAST EUROPE? That is why we have to go back and underline the following: Unification of alternative left from all countries of SEE Basic joint demands and support provided on putting pressure towards each government from SEE Educational system which will lead toward internalization of thoughts instead nationalization (read: nationalism) of thoughts within each country of SEE. But, now the question is HOW it should be done? EDUCATION of the people to vote ―for‖, instead of ―against‖ through the unification of the willingness; that will lead towards joint benefits of all and not for just a few. How? Through the ultimate (r)evolution of minds as soon as possible within the area of SEE. Again, HOW? If I had the answer, I would not write this. Let‘s brainstorm on this one. We can only gain, not loose. We already lost 36

everything in the area of South-East Europe: from dignity and even up to a proper, human way of living. The enemy is not ―other and different‖. The enemy is ―Big Brother‖ who controls 90 % of the world wealth (and their number is less than 5% of population). Let us start to make it equal, at least. We will not take anything with us on the other side (being theist and/or atheist) we will go naked. Is it better to ―go‖, after death, with a clear and honest mind, instead of a rotten and dirty one? Regardless if we call it God, Buddha, Allah and any other name, like energy or…nothing. So, let‘s start thinking and working on it. The longest trip starts with the first step. Syriza has made it. We are the addendum. That can make even Syriza stronger. Should we?

Essay No 7. (16.02.2015) Would You Like To Become Human? Don’t Hate Other People Today is another ―D‖ day for South-East Europe. At least for Croatia. Why? Croatia is inaugurating its new, and first-ever female, president. But, what goes around comes around. Once something isn‘t solved, it will appear again — with a little help from its/his/her friends. Why both? On the East side of this part of Europe there is Aleksandar Vuĉić (Serb), the guy who is now Prime Minister, and experienced a change from being an extreme nationalist to now being a messenger of peace and cooperation. On the West side, there is Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović (Croat) who won, as the New York Times stated the presidential elections 2015 and in, ―Her speech suggested a return to the nationalistic politics that dominated Croatia in the postwar dissolution of Yugoslavia.‖ Nor should we forget Tomislav Nikolić, President of Serbia who has never distanced himself from the nationalists (a recent ―wrong‖ move of his was the strong support for 39

General Ljubiša Diković, who is allegedly under suspicion for crimes committed against Muslims in 1994/95 from BiH and Albanians in Kosovo it 1999, as stated by the Humanitarian Law Center from Belgrade, Serbia). There is a missing person to make ―Four Future Aces‖ for South-East Europe. Such a person is Tomislav Karamarko, and as the polls are all suggesting, could be the future Prime Minister of Croatia by the end of 2015, and who as the leader of the Croatian Democratic Party, is a nationalist from the bottom of his heart — and he is not hiding that at all. So, where are the humans among these Four Aces? The biggest mistake made by the Left Wing parties of South East Europe within the past 25 years (including all six former ex-Yugoslav republics) was their having ―hungry eyes‖ for the easiest way to govern through fundamental, ridiculous and simple means, while placing or blaming all mistakes within the transition period from one system (socialism) to another one (capitalism) on others, while claiming that the guilty ones are ―other and different‖. But who are they? They are people of the same kind, but with different national and cultural backgrounds. Not knowing (have 40

they?) that the thief does not have a national background and that he/she is a simply — a thief! The Four Aces are coming to determine a destiny of more than, at least, 25 million people of South Europe (or even wider, who knows?). This essay is just a simple warning, because these Aces are very similar fellows among Muslims, Albanians, Slovenians, Macedonians and ―others‖ within the area. What can we expect within this area? As the title said: Would you like to become human? Do not hate other people! The problem is that all of four of these Aces have a foundation made of concrete within their feet that is based on exactly that – a hatred of the ―other and those who are different‖. As a result, there is nothing to expect than even more hatred and a ―back to the future‖ of the ―beautiful‖ old times of hatred and national exclusivity that led us in the recent past to a bloody war within the area. Should we expect something similar in the nearest future? Perhaps, all depends on what The Bilderberg Group and similar groups will decide about people/nations actions against citizens.

41

The funny truth is that the collapse of socialism has been reduced by political infestation. However, we just need to get rid of capitalism! What is after that?

42

Essay No 8. (7.03.2015) Losing Their Virginity The youth of South–East Europe have lost their virginity. How has that happened? Before we try to answer that question, let us develop a proper story as the background and the confirmation of the above mentioned announcement. Namely, during last decade, almost 300,000 thousand young people from the area of South-East Europe fled towards a ―better place for work and life‖ heading towards the West (Europe) – young people from Croatia (approximately 100,000), Serbia (approximately 100,000) and Bosnia and Herzegovina (approximately 100,000). It increases especially within last couple a years and instead to decreasing, it rapidly goes up and up. Why? The answer is very simple. It is within the Head office of each political party (left or right, depending on the election year) within those three mentioned countries (There is no difference in Montenegro and/or Macedonia and especially Kosovo, which increases above mentioned number almost up to 500.000). Again, why is that answer is within the above mentioned parties, regardless if they are ―national‖ and/or ―international‖?

43

Whoever is on power he does not need smart and intelligent, educated and hard-working people, especially young. Because they asks the questions, want to change, and would like to challenge the decisions – a young mind is liberal and open-minded (of course, only if they are not educated under the sugar coat of the ruling and/or opposition party). Also, on the other hand, the ones who stay behind are poor, non-educated, blinded narrow minded controlled nation(s) who, as sheep, are still looking for their Sheppard (forgetting that the political leaders know exactly what they are doing – just check up who are the most richest people in the mentioned countries) who will again vote for the beloved leader(s) while he/she (especially in Bosnia and Herzegovina) love more countries like Croatia, Serbia and/or Turkey than Bosnia and Herzegovina itself. So, why we have mentioned ―virginity‖ at the beginning? Because, instead of losing their political virginity within the direct contact with own country, they will lose with ―eyes wide open‖, the real virginity of life in a direct combat within civilized and developed countries of the West. But, in the same time will bring (from Balkan‘s) to the cold West the hot and strong genetic material of educated people from this area. Please, just turn around and check among those more than 5 millions who fled the Balkan area because of the wars (1991-1999) how many of them have succeeded and became influential people in the countries 44

which accepted them as refugees. Is it because they had weapons and/or knives? No….No…No… It is because of their knowledge and clear mind for new openings of the possibilities for further development of their being, but also the being of the whole society where they live now. So, what will happen with South-East area and their youth? Within the question there are two issued sub-questions: 1. South – East 2. Youth The answer for the number one is within the sentence of Mrs. Latinka Perović, 82 old former politician, who was Secretary of Communist party of Serbia (within former Yugoslavia, back in 1972 replaced from the position by Tito and local comrades because of ―anarchic liberalism‖) who stated in an interview to Radio B92 in Belgrade, Serbia, back in 2012: ―The nation/people is not eternal, everlasting category‖. What is the answer for number two? I will try to explain that through a poetic thought:

45

Thought that is not in consonance with my thought is not a thought because I think so. Can you guess who are behind those words? Every Serbian, Macedonian, Croatian, Bosnian and Herzegovinian, Montenegrin and/or Kosovar politician (on power or in opposition) invented that sentence and cursed every young soul from this area of South-East Europe. So, what is the way out? Unification of diversity that is present among the smart and open minded young people from over here. How? Painfully easy it might be done, through the network of knowledge, understanding of differences and improvement of connections – within the area of the same and/or similar languages and culture, for the benefits of all. Like musketeers – one for all and all for one, but this time musketeers of 21 century who will, after losing virginity, in the same time do their best to become a new Empire which will strike back so hard that bloody ―new royalties from Eastern Europe‖ who promised golden spoons to the people back in 1990, after fall of Socialism (but those ―new royalties – tycoons‖ really destroyed all the positive thoughts for better future) will become a forgotten past, while on power will come, through the soul of youth: knowledge, understanding and mutual respect – for the

46

benefit of all, regardless if you are a Catholic, Orthodox, Muslim or even Atheist and/or Gnostic. Utopia? It might be, but what the fuck is the other option?

Essay No 9. (4.04.2015) Media (Il)literacy Let us try to establish an analyses and outcomes for the appearance of media (il)literacy within South East Europe, and through it, of the most controversial, but extremely respected intellectual dissident in the last decade – Noam Chomsky, who has compiled a list of the ten most common and effective strategies resorted to by ―hidden‖ agendas to establish a manipulation of the population through the media. The efforts of USAID with regards to media literacy should have been addressed, but, why then has nothing happened since they started teaching the local people in the Balkans? Maybe because they did not want to listen the above mentioned USA dissident: 1. The strategy of distraction The primary element of social control is the strategy of distraction aimed at diverting public attention from important issues and changes determined by the political and economic elites, via the technique of flooding continuous distractions and insignificant information. Distraction strategy is also essential to prevent the public interest in the essential knowledge in the area of the science, economics, psychology, neurobiology and 49

cybernetics. ―Maintaining public attention diverted away from the real social problems, captivated by matters of no real importance. Keep the public busy, busy, busy, no time to think, back to farm and other animals (quote from a text "Silent Weapons for Quiet War‖). 2015 – Instead of fighting against poverty: Bosnia and Herzegovina – implementation of the October elections 2014 – it took them almost five months to do so – who will get the power (read: money and the control of resources) – while at the same time the protests of workers do not stop in Tuzla, Travnik, Bihać, Zavidovići, Banja Luka…. Croatia – will the Minister of Defense resign from the post because of the protests of the war veterans in tents in front of his office? Almost six months like a soap opera while at the same time every town in Croatia slowly but surely gets a so called ―humanitarian market shop‖ where the prices are lower than in the real one! Why? Macedonia – Almost 22,000 people were followed by secret services – opposition leader said last month (listening and recording their phone conversation) while

50

the country is falling into the chaos of corruption and poverty. Serbia – Vojislav Šešelj (who just a few days ago has been called back to Den Haag at the International Tribunal to continue 12 years of trial for War Crimes) burned a Croatian flag in the centre of Belgrade (Serbia) on April 1 giving more time to the local (and their neighbors) politicians to spend more months (what is the next?) talking about this political and human clown who said that he will come to Croatia, but on a battle tank?! – All this is happening while people in Serbia are losing their minds because of poverty! Montenegro – Every now and then somebody dies in the buses driving on the Europe‘s worst roads on Montenegrin mountains and while that happens (within last 30 years, almost twice a year a major crash happens) nobody from the Government has done anything to fix the problem, but talking about the ―Sutorina‖ issue is more important than to talk about how to fix the roads within the smallest Republic of ex-Yugoslavia. Where is the poverty here? Just walk on the streets of Podgorica and you will see how many beggars there are. Indeed, the strategy of distraction exists very deeply within the area of Balkan Peninsula – sorry – of the region of South-East Europe – sorry – ex Yugoslavia. Again, sorry – 51

within the area of the lost mind and the area of organized anarchy. Media illiteracy exists so much that the people in every one of the above mentioned countries are fed up with the emptiness of time dedicated to listening, watching and participating in the media by ―the problems‖ while being robbed by (s)elected leaders. How to become a media literate? 1. By reading through the media, rather than reading with them. 2. By trying to see what is behind the scene because whoever talks about the conspiracy is the one who creates it. 3. By understanding that all the people are red below/under their skin, regardless if they are politicians and/or just the people. I am distracted with all this. Aren‘t you?

52

Essay No 10. (18.04.2015) Create Problems And Then Offer Solutions We continue with the analyzing of Media (il)literacy within South-East Europe having in mind that having illiterate (media kind of) people within the area is blessing for the politicians.―I know, it is true, it was reported in the media―, people usually say in reference to the content of the news on any News channel in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Serbia, Montenegro, Kosovo*, Macedonia… 2. Create problems and then offer solutions (by Noam Chomsky) This method is also called ―problem-reactionsolution.― It creates a problem, a ―situation‖ referred to cause some reaction in the audience, making this the principal of the steps that you want to accept. For example: let it unfold and intensify urban violence, or arrange for bloody attacks so that the public is the one who demands tougher security laws and policies to the detriment of freedom. Or, create an economic crisis to accept as a necessary the evil retreat of social rights and the dismantling of public services. Croatia: The story of the Mayor of Croatian capital city in 2014/15, Mr. Milan Bandić, instead of being just a problem of the Court and Prosecutor‘s offices, exactly thanks to the two methods mentioned above became a problem nationwide. The country is full of corruption, with 53

hatred being expressed against others who are different, nepotism and legally elected thieves are rife, and now it has a problem with the Mayor who has been in power since 2000 (three times elected) and is accused of allegedly being a ―capo di tutti i capi― in reference to agreed upon tenders and the wasting of public money without a plan or purposes. So what was the solution? Arrest him, than release him, so that he can conduct his duty, but he cannot talk to the more than 90 witnesses against him (who, by the way, work within the city council), than wait for the Prosecutor‘s office to appeal on his release. The Mayor can be seen jogging every morning on Zagreb streets and talking with the people. That is the solution, yes, the solution of organized anarchy in South-East Europe. Bosnia and Herzegovina: Milorad Dodik, a Serb, president of the Republika Srpska entity within Bosnia and Herzegovina, first said that genocide in Srebrenica in 1995 had not happened (a decision given by International Court in Den Haag), but just a huge crime. He then visited Srebrenica, on April 16 and repeated his claim that really huge crimes had happened in Srebrenica. Than the solution came from the words from a Bosniak member of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bakir Izetbegović who said, ―It is good that Dodik has visited Potoĉari (part of Srebrenica, comment S.H.), but it would be much better if he admitted that in that place has happened a genocide.‖

54

Why is this solution? The easy answer is within the words of Bakir‘s father, Alija Izetbegović, who was back in 1995 the president of the Bosnia and Herzegovina presidency who, when asked by Richard Holbrooke (USA) to ban SDS (Serbian Democratic Party) from the political field after the war in BiH, simply said…No, I can easily agree with them, much easier than with SDP (Social Democratic Party)…In the meantime, SDS became a very moderate party and SNSD (Dodik‘s party: Union of Independent Social Democrats) became a right-wing party while at the same time having two strange words within their title ―social‖ and ―democratic.‖ Yes, the answer was given at that time, and has become the solution now. This solution makes us all cry for all the victims of the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Serbia: When Aleksandar Vuĉić was elected to become the new Prime Minister of Serbia in April 27, 2014 the problem that he was faced with was the war against corruption, nepotism, hatred of others and ignorance in Serbia. The solution was that he via the media sweetly explains what the problems are and what he will do to solve them. But, on the ground in real life nothing has happened towards that; so far. Or is this just a circle of trust. One victory of power, while another one rising to power. And we ride the merry-go-round; against the local people.

55

Montenegro: ―Cyrillic letter (writing) is not equal with Latin letter (writing) claims the Montenegro opposition, which has asked for the Law for the protection of Cyrillic letter (writing) in Montenegro. The solution is there, in a country suffering from corruption and nepotism, to deal with the issue of letters (writing), instead of focusing on the everyday and people‘s life. Yes, let us sit down and imagine what is next. Maybe, why do we have such a small country? Let us make it bigger - through letters (writing). Macedonia: The constant problem between the majority of Macedonians and the minority of Albanians is an artificially created problem. Why? Because thieves of both ethnicities are thieves and nothing else. The problem of Macedonia just on the surface does indeed look like an ethnicity problem. The solution has been seen as the creation of enclaves, where simply the worthy ―law of rule―, instead ―rule of law―, is the practice. But, let‘s play with national issues, why not. Like in all countries that came out from Ex-Yugoslavia, the most important problem is the ―nation.‖ Me, modest as I am, I have a solution: ―The Nation is part of History. We just need to wait for the end of…History.‖ Last but not least, what does Media (il)literacy have to do with the above mentioned cases? Again, the answer is 56

very simple. The ones who read, watch and listen to the media about these subject, are just absorbing the content on the basis of (il)literacy and not on the basis an interaction of knowledge and news. We have to teach us to read everything, watch everything and listen to everything (as much as we can) and then to make that the foundation for the final solution on the basis of interaction of the facts. It is easy to say; but very difficult to gain. Again, why? Language barriers, for example in Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro and Croatia. While they do not need translators, they speak ―different‖ languages. How will they then read, listen and watch other media from other areas? Even in Macedonia. Finally, the solution for media (il)literacy is a mixture of the news within one channel on which every hour there should be different news about same topic. It will be a lot of fun. Finally, after the wars; to have fun and see the stupidity and amateurism on a TV channel. Finally! Or not, depending who you ask.

57

58

Essay No 11. (10.05.2015) The Gradual Strategy We continue with the third part of analyzing Media (il)literacy within South-East Europe, having in mind that having an illiterate media-type people within the area is a blessing for the politicians. People usually say, ―Trust them, without doubt,‖ when referring to the content of the news on any News channel in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Serbia, Montenegro, Kosovo*, and Macedonia…

2. The gradual strategy (by Noam Chomsky) ―Acceptance to an unacceptable degree, just apply it gradually, dropper, for consecutive years. That is how the radically new socioeconomic conditions (neo-liberalism ) were imposed during the 1980s and 1990s: the minimal state, privatization, precariousness, flexibility, massive unemployment, wages, and do not guarantee a decent income, so many changes that have brought about a revolution if they had been applied once.‖ Croatia: Transition is something that is unavoidable within the past twenty years, but the ―transition‖ is in the way how former communists and current capitalists (but also the 59

newest nationalistic tycoons) thought it should be: a cheap buy off during privatization of the former big trade and production companies, merging them within consortiums, and the ―killing‖ (i.e. even buying them and linking them to the existing clusters) of small companies through the damping of prices for the goods presented within the market. It has to happen, they have said – politicians, because that is the future. Slowly, we will develop, they were saying in the 1990s (XX Century). Currently, in the second decade of XXI century, Croatia has an unemployed rate of 16,.7 % and is among most undeveloped countries of the European Union. Transition has killed a future over there. Is there a light at the end of tunnel? Maybe, through lustration, but is it too late? Is the Media in on it? Just under the control of the ones who have the money and pay to present their own variant of truth. Independent media: died in 2008 with the Feral Tribune, possibly the most independent media in Former Yugoslavia area, beginning in 1990. Bosnia and Herzegovina: First, divide a country in small pieces (in Dayton, back in 1995, which had stopped the War, but did not bring anything else other than peaceful suffering) and generated 148 ministers within four levels of authorities (municipal, cantonal, entity and state level – and there is even a fifth, separate, district level for one cityBrĉko) for education and divide, which is unavoidable 60

(because, we are different, for God‘s sake…nationalists screamed…being faced with the point that there is no need for the translation of three ―different‖ languages: Bosnian, Croatia and Serbian in Bosnia and Herzegovina…60% of equality of languages, proved by world-known linguistics, shows that in use is only one language, and yet over here there is 80% of equality…so?!) children as known apartheid once upon a time in South Africa and/or Nazi Germany. You can even find in Bosnia and Herzegovina (especially in Middle Bosnia Canton and Herzegovina Neretva Canton) schools in which kids are entering in the same building, but going to different classrooms and having two directors for two schools under one roof and two different professors for the same subject, because…of a simple Apartheid, regardless whether we are talking about Bosnians, Croatians or Serbs. What we will do about the others, then? Nothing, and it will happen to them like it happens to in the famous ―Sejdić – Finci question‖ since 2009. Gradually and strategically we are going towards the path of early history, because they are the ―others‖ and not ―our kind of human nationalists.‖ It has been shown that today‘s kids, after 20 years of brainwashing with ―my own history, language and geography‖ do not know anything about those who are different from them. But then, that was the goal of the gradual strategy for division of education. It has been a very successful one, I have to admit, because, it will not help in the interaction of 61

the cultures and by that improvement of my, and/or his/her culture, but instead a separation of it. For good. In the XXI Century. In the heart of Europe. In the Balkans Media (il)litteracy has been shown with the unitary and/or nationalistic suppression of the truth. There is no ―middle of the road― truth, but one small reflection of the light within very small group of teachers and students led by Prof. Nenad Veliĉković from University of Sarajevo within ―Školegijum―, who tries to wake up memories on the bright future within education, just if…we interact properly. Serbia: The myth of Kosovo‘s battle in Serbia has been built through the centuries reflecting a lost battle as the victory. The battle was lost in 1389 when Turks won against the Serbian army — but ―we won‖ Serbian nationalists have screamed through the ages, centuries. Today, Kosovo*, and everybody sees that, is not anymore in any kind of way in Serbia, and it has been recognized as sovereign state by the side of 108 countries in the World. Of course, there are still a lot of things (politically, economically, socially) to be done to be fully recognized by the UN and big-world countries such as Russia and/or Spain, but having the USA, Great Britain and Germany recognize them shows a lot. Nevertheless, let‘s go back to the gradual strategy of both sides in regards to their own thoughts about the Kosovo as part of or not part of Serbia: Serbia was teaching everybody that Kosovo is part of 62

Serbia and will never be recognized such as sovereign country by Serbia – especially after delusion of Yugoslavia and losing even small control over it by Serbian authorities. At the same time the gradual strategy of Kosovo is slow and easy negotiations to gain as much as sovereignty as they can by small, successful steps. Who will win, at the end. No one yet knows, but we do know who has lost: Both the citizens of Kosovo and Serbia. Why? Check out unemployment rates and recession. Can they physically survive if fed only through a national(istic) vocabulary such as: ―We will eat roots of the plaints but Kosovo will stay as a part of Serbia,‖ and/or ―Kosovo is on its own regardless of the suffering…and we will suffer even more…and stay on its own.‖?! What about humanity. Gradual Strategy of Humanity! Is there any one over here. Or this is the real end, my dear friend. Media (il)litteracy reflection with exclusions of the truths on both sides — and people on both sides are really brainwashed with their ―own truth‖. No other truth is acceptable but ours, presented in all media in Serbia and/or Kosovo. Just walk on the street in Belgrade and ask either side is Kosovo independent…You might be beaten even. Montenegro: Majority of Montenegrins over the minority of Serbians. Both with roots of orthodoxy. Two different churches. One God. Same religion. Showing that the language is Montenegrin, and not the Serbian language as it 63

used to be called — even introducing new words within it. Slowly, but surely, nations within the area of the Balkans are shaping them up within their own culture and language what is the preconditions to become real nations. But, what about this: ―We are two tribes of the same people. But; the problem is which one!‖ That is why there are disputes between Serbians and Montenegrins in Montenegro. Serbs were saying that Montenegrins are Serbs and Montenegrins are saying that Serbs in Montenegro are Montenegrins. Where are the humans, after all? Media (il)litteracy reflection with exclusions of the truths on both sides and people on both sides are really brainwashed with their ―own truth‖. No other truth is acceptable but ours, presented in all media in Serbia (focusing on Serbs in Montenegro and some news journals and portals in Montenegro even) and/or Montenegrin newspapers and portals. There are even cities in Montenegro which are more Serbian than Serbs cities in Serbia. Am I wrong? Macedonia: Recent riots against the Government (1,0003,000 people between 5.5. – 7.5. 2015) on the streets of Capitol of Macedonia, city of Skopje is a reflection of the gradual strategy of both sides that having a stable country is bad for them. Both can exist only within organized anarchy where they can blame each other for all wrong things done in the past. Basically, on the ground is the fight for the 64

authority and money (as shown even within recent coup d’etat in Islamic community of Macedonia). What about Media (il)literacy? Nothing is special, only the good old story of being controlled by the power of money and authority. Solution: Simple, as it might be. Education based on scientific knowledge of educators who respect others and different ones and within months it will be changed. The problem is…where to find them (educators) with mentioned quality. How to give them the power and have confidence in their teaching? This question arises; but that is good, because practical answers will come, eventually. Without that, even the worst thing that can happen would be as it was back in 1990, after the dissolution of Yugoslavia. Guess what?

Essay No 12. (26.05.2015) The Strategy Of Deferring2 We are almost half way through the Manifest of Noam Chomsky in regards to explaining his ―ten commandments‖. People from the countries of former Yugoslavia: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Serbia, Montenegro, Kosovo*, Macedonia…again show a huge ―amount of quantity‖ with respect to of media (il)literacy. Why? Because of the lack of education and knowledge without a respect that, ―The knowledge is the production of own thoughts and not of the production of memories‖ is a presumption to the aforementioned, as has said Prof. Dr Vujo Vukmirica from the Faculty of Economics of the University of Banja Luka within the Symposium ―Development Challenges to 2020′ on Friday, 23.5.2015 within the premises of Independent University of Banja Luka. Why are we always saying: ―The good old times―? Simply it is because every new time which arises before us, is worse than the previous one. So, the one in which we are living, will one day be ―the good old times‖ — even if the current situation for us is difficult and really bad.

4. The strategy of deferring (by Noam Chomsky) ―Another way to accept an unpopular decision is to present it as ―painful and necessary‖, gaining public acceptance, at the time for future application. It is easier to accept that a future sacrifice of immediate slaughter. First, it is because the efforts are not being used immediately. Then, because the public, masses, is always the tendency to expect naively that ―everything will be better tomorrow‖ and that the sacrifice required may be avoided. This gives the public more time to get used to the idea of change and accept it with resignation when the time comes.‖ Instead of going through the countries by name, there is a very similar ―strategy of deferring‖ that has happened since the dissolution of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (SFRJ), back in 1990: a) Even if there were no war within our boundaries during the period of ―wars‖ within SFRJ, we need to get through the transition period from communism to capitalism and for that we need time and you have to be very patient, having in mind that we got rid of bloody communism for the good of our nation(s); b) Because of the war within and around our boundaries, a lot of factories have been destroyed and we have to start from the scratch being focused on basic survival of the majority of our own nation(s); 68

c) Having so many transition tycoons is not our mistake and that is a product of the lack of ―rule of law‖ within our country, and we will, step by step, fight and win that battle for our own nation(s); d) The world recession made influence on our economy and the reason that there are so many unemployed people is the reflection of disaster of world economy and we need time to survive through it as the nation(s); And it continues, and continues…preparing for even worse issues to happen. People, being naively stupid as usual, suck it in with the pleasure having in mind that to suffer under the boots of ―former communists‖ is better than the ―real one‖, not knowing that they have never lived in communism, but in a social society which reflections easily you can find in today‘s Swedish and/or Islands society. However, this hypothesis is for some other essay, but in this one we have to focus on media (il)literacy which is the footprint of the usual manipulation targeting the famous: ―We have told you before what will happen to you know.‖ Then we will just continue to do as we have planned and making you illiterate while we are becoming rich. Using ―Virus balkanicus‖ reflected as ―ethnic nationwide protection‖ to protect my own (read: national) thief, who is better twice then your honest (read: national) man and or woman. How to fight against it? Simply as it is – using that sentence from the beginning of this essay which I heard from ―another‖ nation at Symposium of ―another‖ nation in the city of ―another‖ 69

majority nation, just couple a days ago. How I will use it, my dear reader? Together with you using yours and my perception of actual media presentations of the ―truths‖ on all sides (―your national one‖ and ―my national one‖) focusing for a solution. Which kind? The one which will lead us towards the destruction of destructivity within societies (read: countries) of the Balkans and creating consensus, at least on the issue that a thief is a thief regardless to which nation he and/or she belongs. Is it difficult to do? No, because the current life is more difficult.

Essay No 13. (13.06.2015) The Nazis It happened on the same day in Southeast Europe – 12/6/2015. (Friday) What is the difference? 1. Swastika on a football playground during the game between Croatia and Italy in Split, Croatia. 2. Some BH fanatics (Bosnia and Herzegovina football fans) override Israel flag in Zenica, BiH. 3. Gojko Đogo won ―Branko Ćopić‖ award for literature in Belgrade, Serbia. The difference is: 1. Reflection of ―new modern democracy‖ that allow rising up of Nazism. 2. Reflection of ―new modern democracy‖ that allow rising up of Nazism. 3. Reflection of ―new modern democracy‖ that allow rising up of Nazism. The difference is: 1. Croatian Catholic‘s who were behind the making of that swastika are brainwashed young people, full of hatred. 71

2. Bosniak Muslims who were behind overriding of Israel flag are brainwashed, young people full of hatred. 3. Serbian Gojko Đogo? He hated when he was young. Now, he still hates, regardless that he won a prize named by most peaceful person, one of the greatest writers, in former Yugoslavia. Within the three different countries (Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia and Serbia) all the above mentioned people hate each other. They hate: 1. Others who are different than they are. 2. Their former leaders not because they were bad, but because they did not realize what they wanted to do during the war. So, where do we now stand? We are not really standing any more. We are falling down. But, nobody yet has told us that. Unfortunately, alienation of the world will not do it either. To tell us what has been written above. So, where are we standing? Again, we are not standing, and we will never stand up again. Being what we are: Nazis of South-East Europe on the Edge of Civilization – Depending who you ask.

Essay No 14. (14.06.2015) Go To the Public As A Little Child Simple words for simple minds; The Balkan Peninsula is full of simple minds, ready to be manipulated in all causes. Just recently, one of the war heroes (from the Bosniak Muslim side back in the war 1992-1995 in BiH) was arrested in Switzerland (Naser Orić, on the border between France and Switzerland last week). The arrest was based on the warrant issued by Belgrade (Serbia) last year because of the ‗war crimes‘ back in nineties of last century. On one side we have an increase in the price of electricity expected to rise 12% for the common population in Serbia, and twenty years since the genocide in Srebrenica, underlined and sentenced like that by International justice tribune from Den Haag, which is still for the majority of Serbs in BiH just a huge crime and for Serbians in Serbia, again, huge crime. So, again my dear colleague, Noam Chomsky, great admiration for your Number 5 Strategy of manipulation: 5. Go to the public as a little child Most of the advertising to the general public uses speech, arguments, people and particularly children‘s intonation, often close to the weakness, as if the viewer were a little child or a mentally deficient. The harder one tries to deceive 73

the viewer look, the more it tends to adopt a tone infantilizing. Why? ―If one goes to a person as if she had the age of 12 years or less, then, because of suggestion, she tends with a certain probability that a response or reaction also devoid of a critical sense as a person 12 years or younger (see Silent Weapons for Quiet War).‖ On one side we have leaders of the nation not ready for a catharsis to call ―genocide― a genocide and on other side we have leaders of the nation who abuse genocide for their own private and party property issues. So, let‘s just count what we can find within the following: 1. Bakir Izetbegović (Bosniak Muslim) back in October 2014: ―Within next 4 years new 100,000 new employees‖. My comment: I remember when it was the last time promise of this kind – back in 1999 by the side from another Bosniak Muslim-Edhem Biĉakćić, and he was not so modest – he mentioned – ―50,000 new employees within a year!‖ What has happened? 50,000 and more, but indeed unemployed a year later. Why I have mentioned this which does not have anything with the introduction of these essays? Simply, to make an intro for the following words of Hakija Melhojić, war commander of the police of Srebrenica Bosniak Muslim side…quote: ―One of the founders of the SDA and a 74

longtime member of the Organizing Committee for the marking of events in Srebrenica Ibran Mustafic said that between 500 and 1,000 Bosniaks from Srebrenica killed by their compatriots. According to him, this was done during the breakthrough to Tuzla in July 1995, because there were lists of those who at any cost should not be alive to escape. For lists of unsuitable Bosnians knew the Muslim leadership with Alija Izetbegovic (Father of Bakir Izetbegović, comment SH), a wartime commander in Srebrenica, Naser Oric was the most responsible as the city became the highest spot in the history of mankind, said Mustafic. He pointed out that the list of unsuitable Bosniaks made by Srebrenica mafia, narrowly military and political leadership in Srebrenica, which is from 1993. Was ―the master of life and death.‖ If I had to judge Oric in The Hague, I would tell him of crimes against Serbs held a minimum of 20 years imprisonment for crimes against his compatriots ruled at least 200,000 years, Mustafic said, adding that the Oric 1993, when the enclave nearly conquered, fled from Srebrenica, as is did two years later. Mustafic argues that the ―crime‖ in Srebrenica was the agreement between the Alija Izetbegović and then U.S. President Bill Clinton. Srebrenica Genocide was absolutely staged between the international community and Izetbegovic, or between Izetbegovic and Clinton. So, for me, a much greater crime than that committed on July 1995 was when 75

Clinton stepped in the Memorial 2003. That was the moment when the villain returned to the crime scene, said Mustafic. He stressed that there are significant manipulation of the Srebrenica victims‘ names and is considered to be very difficult to determine the exact number of those killed or missing in the city. Srebrenica has long been subject to manipulation, and many of the environments are Izetbegovic since summer 1992 moved further in the implementation of the project, stating that the only important to show as much of Bosniak victims, said Mustafic. About Hakija Meholjić: Mustafic is the author of the book ―The planned chaos,‖ in which he presented a series of accusations against the then Muslim leadership to the crime in Srebrenica was agreed upon, which is why he was repeatedly threatened in 2008. He was ―brutally beaten,‖ end of quote. Live words of Hakija Meholjić are here on YouTube with English translation. All the time, approaching with the words like talking to the small children (i.e…everybody knows who did this genocide…should not be forgotten…should be forgiven when all the criminals are behind the bars…), Bosniak Muslim propaganda was only accusing Serb side for the genocide in Srebrenica. 76

I myself, as an engaged intellectual, fully agree with the word genocide accepted by International Court of Justice for Srebrenica and everybody knows that general Ratko Mladić and other Serb war leaders led by Radovan Karadžić should be blamed and sentenced for the genocide in Srebrenica, but…Were they the only ones? Or did they just took and implement given opportunity? The answer is still blowing in the wind. Until the Judgment Day. Oh, how much I love the God, but without the religion that exist in the ―real‖ world waiting for the eternal judgment which call all of us in the real world. When we will meet ultimate energy (somebody call it God, Allah and/or Buddha) and became its part, or not, depending on the final truth. Even in Srebrenica. What about that increase of the electricity price in Serbia mentioned above? That is more related to the previous essay of mine connected with No 1. Strategy of manipulation from Noam Chomsky: The strategy of distraction. Here was just as an example connected with No 5. Strategy: Go to the public as little child. Why? Again speak about Srebrenica and try to arrest Naser Orić. Again, I have made it in simple words. Like a child and blame others. Without a catharsis; without humanity; as it is usual within Balkans, within all sides, forever. 77

And the last but not least, what about media (il)literacy? It will be solved only through the equal approach to sources of information by all sides involved. Let us open all military records in Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina or we will just wait another 60 years like in USA to find who killed ―President Kennedy‖? Being like a little child as usual.

78

Essay No 15. (3.07.2015) Use Emotional Side More Than Reflection In the past twenty years, and a little bit more, within the area of former Yugoslavia is a perfect example of Noam Chomsky‘s No 6. Strategy of Media Manipulation titled: ―Use the emotional side more than the reflection.‖ Why? To understand better, let us first go back to the definition given by Noam Chomsky: ―Making use of the emotional aspect is a classic technique for causing a short circuit on rational analysis, and finally to the critical sense of the individual. Furthermore, the use of emotional register to open the door to the unconscious for implantation or grafting ideas, desires, fears and anxieties , compulsions, or induce behaviors …‖ So, starting with the awakening of ―nations‖ (Serbs, Croats, Muslims, Slovenians, Macedonians, Albanians and Montenegrins) at the beginning of the nineties of last century; saying that they were within the chains of communist regime. But,… I was there. I was living in that bloody communist country for almost thirty years before democracy arrived on a white horse (or was it black?). Just an example: My mother-inlaw, as well as her neighbors – Croats and Serbs – were celebrating with her as a Muslim, the Ramadan Holiday as 79

usual, within the home, with the family or by going to the Mosque. What is the difference? The difference is this: Before the nineties we had religion of ideology and nowadays we have ideology of religion. So, the difference is that within the secular country(ies) they (read: political and religion leaders) would like to make public what was private twenty-five years ago. Is the relation with God, Allah and/or Buddha private or public? Private, by all means, and a person approaches to God, Allah and/or Buddha with his/her private prayer for something. But, no, here and now we have a public push to have everything in public, full of emotional words given by the side of local imams and/or priests, with the help of politicians that their religion is the best and a superior one and that their religion is the one which will save us all. The others, and different ones, are always the guilty ones for our bad moments of living. Then, they (religion leaders) have the support of politicians and parties that the children should learn only about ―their history,‖ ―their geography,‖ ―their language‖, ―their culture,‖ ―their literature‖ without knowing that where there is no interaction with other ―cultures‖ there is no improvement of one‘s own culture. Aren‘t we all red under our skin? Or was that also part of the communist conspiracy?

80

The famous ―spin‖ of the current political leaders of all kinds (even former communists, nowadays social democrats) is the lack of compromise. It will be as I say so, or nothing will happen. That has now continued for almost twenty-five years and all major decisions, for example, in Bosnia and Herzegovina, have been made by the decision of foreigners (i.e. EU High Representative office) when they pushed Parliament to pass the Bill of Importance for the Development of Democracy. Here, through the emotional reflection, within the area of former Yugoslavia, the politicians have understood democracy as the law of rule, not as the rule of law and responsibility – the responsibility to be judged by the people, of the people, for the people. Media (il)literacy in the area of former Yugoslavia, within the sense of strategy of No 6. of Noam Chomsky, might be understandable, as Prof. W. James Potter, Ph.D. from University of California – Santa Barbara, Department of Communication underlined in his book titled Media Literacy (Saga publication, USA, 2008), through three strongholds of media literacy reflected simply with respect to the area of South-East Europe – although here we will add ―il‖ and write ―Media (il)literacy‖: 1. Personal position

81

The position of the people who vote is very weak, the goals are not determined as being strong, and we cannot control the way or how we use the media and the way or how we process received information. In the area of the former Yugoslavia media literacy is the product. Within the words of Prof. Potter media literacy should be the process. 2. Available knowledge Available knowledge, according to Prof. Potter, is made of the group of organized information within someone‘s consciousness. Also, information is the key ingredient of the knowledge. But, what if, during twenty-five years somebody (read: politicians and religious leaders) implants wrong, inadequate and superficial information within the peoples‘ knowledge? 3. Skills ―Skills are aids and it is gained through the practice. They are like muscles; as much we use it, they are better. If it is not in use, it is lost within their efficiency.‖ (W.J.P. ―Media Literacy‖, page 41) So, having the table of media literacy on one side and table of media (il)literacy on other let us see what we get within

82

the area of the former Yugoslavia, when we talk about the seven skills: 1 > Analyses Media literacy, by W. James Potter: Analyses – breakup of the message within the meaning completeness Media (il)literacy, by Sabahudin Hadžialić: Analyses – breakup of the message within meaningless completeness 2 > Evaluation Media literacy, by W.J.P: Evaluation – assessment of the values of one element, conducted through the comparison of the elements of the message with certain standards. Media (il)literacy, by S.H.: Evaluation – assessment of the values of one element, conducted through the comparison of the elements of the message without any certain standards.

83

3 > Grouping Media literacy, by W.J.P: Grouping – determination which elements are, within the certain point of view, mutually similar; determination wherein one group of elements is different than other group. Media (il)literacy, by S.H.: Grouping – determination which elements are not, within the certain point of view, mutually similar; no need to make difference because they are already different from ne to another point of view. 4 > Induction Media literacy, by W.J.P.: Induction – Establishment of the pattern within the small group of elements and then spreading that pattern on all elements Media (il)literacy, by S.H.: Induction – Establishment of the pattern within the small group of elements and then spreading that pattern on all elements. Why this is the same as above? Simple, because, through the using of the Strategy No 6. from Noam Chomsky, emotion works here very well – he is Muslim – 84

he is Serb – he is Croat …they are all the same, because being a Muslim (or Serb, or Croat, etc…) means that he is exactly the part of stereotype as I have about him and/or them. 5 > Deduction Media literacy, by W.J.P.: Deduction – using of the general principles for the explanation of individual elements. Media (il)literacy, by S.H.: Deduction – abusing of the general principles dfor the explanation odf individual elements. 6 > Synthesis Media literacy, by W.J.P.: Synthesis – connection of the elements into the new structure Media (il)literacy, by S.H.: Synthesis – re-connection of the elements into the new structure, based on the implanted knowledge by the side of politicians and religious people of my ―nation‖.

85

7 > Abstraction Media literacy, by W.J.P.: Abstraction – giving a short, clear and précised description which reflects the essence of the message in less words then the message itself. Media (il)literacy, by S.H.: Abstraction – giving a short, clear and précised description which reflects the essence of the message in less words then the message itself. Again ―they are all the same and no need to explain it‖. Example: ―A Muslim is the terrorist – All the Muslims are the terrorists‖; ―A Serb is the war criminal – All the Serbs are war criminals.‖; ―A Croat is the aggressor – all the Croats are aggressors.‖ So, again, how to fight against Media (il)literacy within South-East Europe, which has its own proper manipulation technique even in the Strategy No 6. As it is explained by Noam Chomsky? Of course, by using this devil‘s word, it is ―simple.‖ How? Through the establishment of the subject of ―Media literacy‖ in the secondary school, starting from the first year of secondary school, and pointing everything what W. James Potter wrote above and none of what Sabahudin Hadžialić wrote above. 86

Why? You know what people like Sabahudin Hadžialic are, very well. They are all from the same kind.

Essay No 16. (19.07.2015) Keep the Public in Ignorance and Mediocrity Philosophy of the region, the less you know, the better know how. As more you know, the less know how! First: Educate future teachers and professors in a way that even they are not possible to understand basic law of the science – everything should be questioned until the proof is on the table. With this we come to the Number 7 of Noam Chomsky ―Ten strategies of manipulation‖: 7. Keep the public in ignorance and mediocrity Making the public incapable to understand the technologies and methods used to control and enslavement. – ―The quality of education given to the lower social classes must be the poor and mediocre as possible so that the gap of ignorance it plans among the lower classes and upper classes is and remains impossible to attain for the lower classes (See ―Silent Weapons for Quiet War‖).‖

89

Second: Within the area of South-East Europe (exactly, really, ALL the countries) the following is taking place: 1. Less knowledge accepted and gained during the education process – more easy way to manipulate and lie within the future life of the people; 2. Language – If I am from Serbia, I will be thought only about Cyrillic alphabet letters and not about Latin alphabet and if I am from Croatia vice versa. In Bosnia and Herzegovina is even funnier because it will depend to whom people I belong (Croats – Latin; Serbs – Cyrillic and Bosniak Muslims – both Latin and Cyrillic including more Turk loanwords. 3. History – We will teach ―my‖ nation about ―our‖ history as victory through ages and from each text books in the schools, regardless from which country you are from South-East Europe. People (besides only those who escaped to be brainwashed within last twenty five years) does not know that ―my‖ history might not be a completely true. Example of the myths: In Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bosniak Muslims talks about Turks and their time within BiH (between 14th and the end of 19th century) as the time of prosperity, forgetting that the Turks were invaders…In Serbia, Serbians talks about the famous Battle of Kosovo back in 1389 as the victory 90

against Turkey empire forgetting that was the massive loss (lost battle) ever happened for them…In Croatia they talk today about Illyrian language written on dictionaries and grammatical books back in 16th, 17th and 18th century as the part of Croatian history with the explanation that Illyrian language = Croatian language, but that is not a truth. The truth is that Illyrian was synonym for Vlach language3, as a matter of fact for Orthodox Serbian language, or has been used as the group remark for all South Slavs. Furthermore that term has been used to determine ancient residents of Balkan and has been used for appointing of štokavian dialect (See: Andreja Zorić, Munchen, Germany – 2005 and Zagreb, Croatia – 2006). 4. Enemies – All others and different than my ―nation‖ is the enemy. Just check out media and textbook throughout the region of South-East Europe. Only few liberal examples might be found. In Serbia, enemies in the textbook for schools are (see the book ―Školokreĉina‖ of Nenad Veliĉković, published by Mass Media Sarajevo, 2015 – the title of the book might be translated as ―Backwater school‖ – Info: http://www.skolegijum.ba/ ) Turks, Germans (using bed word for them ―Švabo‖), Catholics, converts, Ustaša‘s (Nazi‘s associates in 3

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vlach_language_in_Serbia

91

Croatia during II world war), Albanians….In Croatia enemies are Hungarians, Ĉetnik‘s (Nazi‘s associates in Serbia), Turks, Habsgurb monarchy, Venetians, Turks, Serbs (knaves)…In Bosniak Muslim textbooks are Austrians. 5. Territory – before reading about that I am quoting myself from Radio show (Radio FBiH…Editor Ljiljana Simic…04.06.2015) that ―Patriotism is the sanctuary for crooks‖. So, ignorance focus on territory and supremacy of ―my‖ nation as the preconditions for patriotism. For Bosniak Muslims the fatherland is Bosnia and very rear Herzegovina. For Serbs the fatherland is where the Serbian soul (or grave, or bones) – even in Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. For Croats the fatherland is the land of Croats regardless where they live – Croatia and/or Bosnia and Herzegovina. 6. Symbols – The anthem, flag, coat of arms…reflects the soul of the nation. For others and different ones very often if offending: ―But, who cares, if we are unified under that.‖ 7. Religion and tradition – ignorance about other and different is based (in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia and Serbia, but in other South-East Europe countries as well) on the issue that I have to respect, above all, my own tradition (read: nationalism) and religion. And there is no learning about other religion and/or tradition but my own. Also, there is 92

no question mark on any kind of criticism on religion and tradition: ―Everything is perfect within my nation, by all means.‖ 8. Gender and patriarchate – Nobody, exactly nobody within SEE is using developing of knowledge in regards discussion about sexuality – none. No conversation about sexuality in school and if there is any, it is very rare indeed and depends on individual goals, regardless that there are nowadays talks about that, but because of the Item 7. above, it is still very rear. Also, patriarchate consider father (male) as the boss, leader of the nation – God in the family. No democracy at all. Third: Namely, to fulfill Chomsky‘s No 7. Manipulation strategy, in the media and textbooks has been used: 1. Dealing with the form instead of the essence (deviation, deflections) and attention of the people has been taken from important to not important (recently – example: Srebrenica, 11.7.2015 – everybody talks about attack on Prime minister of Serbia and less talks about funeral of 136 murdered people) 2. Implying, insinuation connected with news and stands about certain points of view. 93

3. Reduction and making conclusions on small patterns. 4. Mystification, deceitfulness – if you repeat one lie ten times it becomes a truth. 5. Invocation – based on invoking one essay of thoughts with another one. 6. Absorption – by purpose wrongly interpretation of other and different one and transferring defects of ―my nation‖ into virtues and using (and abusing) only partial information which is connected with current ideology. 7. Arrogance, ignorance – by intention avoiding discussion, by intention not seeing other and different one (as mentioned in the book of N.V. above). Focusing on stereotype and there is no critical opinion. So, how to fight against it and stay normal? Through the creation of: 1. Independent source of critical thought which will use question mark on any information given by the current ideologies in SEE – through establishment of citizen-scientist agencies which will learn to teach about mutual interaction as only way out from nationalisms – knowing better other and different one is knowing better myself with the goal to 94

interact better not just with other and different one but also within my own people. 2. Opening Public broadcasting service in which the presentation of historical, sociological, geographical facts will be base on scientific truth and not on ―ideological truth‖. 3. Using of new media (social networks above all) to create brotherhood of different thoughts and not brotherhood of ―my nation‖ – no improvement of my own ―nation‖ without interaction with other ―nations‖. Amazing, and it is not only in South-East Europe, but it is all around the world: WE ALL ARE RED UNDER OUR SKIN. Is that means that we all are communists? As I wrote a long time ago: ―In former Yugoslavia, during Tito‘s time, ideology was religion…In current, former parts of that Yugoslavia, religion is ideology.‖ Wake up please, dear Serbians, Bosniak Muslims, Croats, Slovenians, Macedonians, Montenegrins, Albanians and others or… Answer is blowing in the wind, my dear Bob, Dylan.

Essay No 17. (02.08.2015) Encouraging the Public To Be Complacent With Mediocrity4 Cynicism of mediocrity is a lack of eyesight and a surplus of blindness (S.H.) If you just put aside 30 minutes and see the popularity of mediocrity (so-called ―celebrity, intellectual and elite people‖) within the area of South-East Europe you will be able to completely confirm Noam Chomsky‘s tenth strategy for manipulation: ―To encourage the public to be complacent with mediocrity … Promote the public to believe that the fact is fashionable to be stupid, vulgar and uneducated…‖ So, let‘s begin: In Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Montenegro, Macedonia, Albania, Kosovo*, Slovenia, it all too often appears that the most popular people are those for whom we are, usually, saying that they are stupid, vulgar and uneducated – politicians, drug dealers, tycoons (owners of the soccer clubs), red-neck singers, criminals. Indeed, even 4

if we do not mention several individual cases of athletes, soccer and tennis players, the most popular ones are those listed above. Why? Simply put, because it can be shown that this is the ultimate goal for everybody to reach their maximum potential is through identifying themselves with the above-mentioned types of people, instead of being identified with inventors, university professors, humanitarian volunteers, writers and scientists. Again, why? Because in that case you will not ask explicative questions in regards any of the truly important issues. Instead, you will simply adjust yourself to the general setup of stupidity, vulgarity and uneducated sense of living. But, let us see if the people with whom we are identified are really just that? Stupidity THEY: All of them have good positions, income and decision-making posts within society, regardless of their quotient of intelligence.

98

US: We can dream about that and through identification, at least, become like them, regardless of anything. Just being like them. Being stupid or not. Vulgarity THEY: It is so funny when we hear and see them cursing to each other through the yellow (or in public) press and it shows that they are just like all of us, simple people. US: They are fashion-makers and if they curse, we can do so also. Uneducated THEY: Even though they have finished only ―evening schools‖ or not any school at all, they have everything! Even, if they went through some schools and/or university, the school and/or university did not go through them at all. US: Why would we not do the same? Who gives a sh…t about school if it is easy to be like them. Outside of the region, if we look at some of the former presidents of USA (George W. Bush, Ronald Reagan, maybe…or Sarah Palin as one of the candidates to become a president?) we are able to see that it is a general problem (or solution) for the whole world. Not to mention that politician leaders within the South East Europe region — 99

among which you can count on the fingers of one hand — how many of them deserve respect (out of thousands). Are we faced with Conspiracy theory? Not at all, but just with the plan of the rulers all around the world to make it easy to govern, by becoming stupid, vulgar and/or uneducated, and making it easier for them to be much easier manipulated. For what cause? Since Plato‘s time – The state will never cease to exist. We have just to adjust our Media (il)literacy to it. More we know who they are, the less manipulated we will be. How to achieve that? Easy, through the implementation within the curriculum of schools, from the primary level and up to university level, the following subject: Media literacy Why? To upgrade the knowledge towards the establishment of a society that will serve their citizens. Not to manipulate them. It will be a very difficult trip, but the longest trip

100

starts with the first step and to upload the essence instead of the shape. Has anybody in the World made it? Not yet. Nobody would like to be the first one. It is more important nowadays to know more about Kim Kardashian or Justin Bieber than anything else, so far. But, as I said, who will be the first? There was this guy, 2015 years ago, who tried exactly something along these lines, including among other things for the good of the people to establish a society that would serve its citizens. The same citizens that he was trying to help, however, crucified him first and then afterwards glorified him. As usual, our (society at large) first step is always the wrong one. Please, for the first time, let us begin with the right step.

Essay No 18. (21.08.2015) Self-Blame Strengthen ―To let the individual blame for their misfortune; because of the failure of their intelligence, their abilities, or their efforts. So, instead of rebelling against the economic system, the individual autodesvalida and guilt, which creates a depression, one of whose effects is to inhibit its action. And, without action, there is no revolution!…‖ In Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Montenegro, Macedonia, Albania, Kosovo*, and Slovenia there is a very popular song from the band No Smoking Orchestra from Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina (Zabranjeno pušenje) titled Museum of Revolution from 2009 in which there are the words: ―I am big and all of you are the small beings, in principal you are lower species If you are so clever, why you do not have a couple a million of Euros…‖ Why is that? Because, the environment in which there exists the manipulation with religion, nationalism, corruption, education and establishment has made that possible. The most popular characters are the ones who are on ―black 103

pages‖ of the newspaper and the one who cheated the State‘s tax office. Having that in mind, people suffer confusion when faced with the failure of the ―rule of law‖ and the establishment of the ―law of the rule‖. They keep asking themselves exactly those words quoted above from Noam Chomsky‘s Ten Strategies of Manipulation. Complete societies within South-East Europe, regardless if in power are from the ―left‖ and/or ―right‖ and/or ―center‖ or of any kind have been established in a way to protect the ones who are in power, instead of protecting the people. That is why the biggest number of the employed people within the abovementioned countries are within state-owned offices, within bureaucracy buildings. They are secure with everything and they will, for sure, defend that system, while the unemployment rate varies from 20% (Croatia) up to 44% (Bosnia and Herzegovina). How should the media literacy be established ―abusing‖ exactly this Number 9 Strategy of Chomsky‘s? To establish non-governmental, independent bodies that will do independent research (with the obligation of the Parliaments to obey the findings) within the whole fields of economy (privatization process after 1990, taxation issues, corruptions…) and…have the TV, Radio shows, Internet portals and social networks (all in the same time) which will 104

on daily basic inform the public about the findings…Not just punish the thieves (as it is now for just a couple of years) while their money is waiting for them when they get out 24 months from now, but also to take it all, really all, from them and give it back to the state. Of course, if it has been proved that there money was ―earned‖ illegally, and then they should be put in jail for a long, long time. There is a simple saying of mine which might be reflected on all states of South-East Europe: ―The difference between a mob/mafia guy and a politician is that mob/mafia guy does illegally what a politician does legally.‖ When we beat that, we will be able to avoid the Self-Blame Strengthen ―task‖.

Essay No 19. (8.09.2015) Getting to Know The Individuals Better Than They Know Themselves ―Over the past 50 years, advances of accelerated science have generated a growing gap between public knowledge and those owned and operated by dominant elites. Thanks to biology, neurobiology and applied psychology, the ―system‖ has enjoyed a sophisticated understanding of human beings, both physically and psychologically. The system has gotten better acquainted with the common man more than he knows himself. This means that, in most cases, the system exerts greater control and great power over individuals, greater than that of individuals about themselves.‖ – Noam Chomsky. In Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Montenegro, Macedonia, Albania, Kosovo*, Slovenia since the advertisement ―Kiki, lakše se diše‖ (for candy advert: ―Kiki, it is easy to breathe‖) everything was, is and will be as mentioned within Noam Chomsky’s Strategy No. 10. Why? Because the lack of knowledge and the famously ignorant can be summed up in the sentence, ―it is true…it was reported in the media,‖ which is excellent for 107

harvesting the conclusion that the state, corporation, company, party, city and/or municipality, as well as religious leaders, know better what is good for individuals, than the individuals do. Instead of using science within the last 50 years to make the world of South-East Europe a better place to exist, it has been used (was it, or is it better anywhere in the world of neo-liberalism?) for manipulation and making the people to become as if they were livestock for the needed intentions of the above-mentioned manipulators. So, what to do next with respect to the media (il)literacy issue, as a goal toward overcoming mentioned problems. Usually, it is easy to say than to conduct. But, we should, at least try: 1. Establish media literacy subject within school system. At least to start from Secondary school. 2. Organize guest teaching process within the Secondary school when independent intellectuals will come (costs covered by the state) and talk with pupils about media literacy, regardless mentioned subject. 3. Publishing of the books related with media literacy issue – based on knowledge and not on manipulation. 108

To strengthen everything mentioned so far, following are MEDIA LITERACY DEFINITIONS & QUOTES (from the distinguished Frank Baker‘s website): 

―Media study does not replace text. It broadens and deepens our understanding of texts.‖ Philip M. Anderson, ―Visual & Verbal Thinking‖ in Media Literacy, A Reader ―We need a lot more critical thinking and media criticism taught in schools at a very early age.‖ John Stauber author of ―The Best War Ever‖ (from Sept. 2006 interview) ―The more I grasp the pervasive influence of media on our children, the more I worry about the media literacy gap in our nation‘s educational curriculum. We need a sustained K-12 media literacy program— something to teach kids not only how to use the media but how the media uses them. Kids need to know how particular messages get crafted and why, what devices are used to hold their attention and what ideas are left out. In a culture where media is pervasive and invasive, kids need to think critically about what they see, hear and read. No child‘s education can be complete without this.‖FCC Commissioner Michael Copps (prepared remarks at June 2006 event) ―the set of abilities and skills where aural, visual, and digital literacy overlap. These include the ability 109

to understand the power of images and sounds, to recognize and use that power, to manipulate and transform digital media, to distribute them pervasively, and to easily adapt them to new forms.‖ 2005, New Media Consortium‘s definition of New Literacies ―Media literacy empowers people to be both critical thinkers and creative producers of an increasingly wide range of messages using image, language, and sound. It is the skillful application of literacy skills to media and technology messages. As communication technologies transform society, they impact our understanding of ourselves, our communities, and our diverse cultures, making media literacy an essential life skill for the 21st century.‖ (The Alliance for A Media Literate America, 2000) ―Media literacy is concerned with helping students develop an informed and critical understanding of the nature of mass media, the techniques used by them, and the impact of these techniques. More specifically, it is education that aims to increase the students‘ understanding and enjoyment of how the-media work, how they produce meaning, how they are organized, and how they construct reality. Media literacy also aims to provide students with the ability to create media products. ‖ ( Media

Literacy Resource Guide, Ministry of Education Ontario, 1997) ―It would be a breach of our duties as teachers for us to ignore the rhetorical power of visual forms of media in combination with text and sound…the critical media literacy we need to teach must include evaluation of these media, lest our students fail to see, understand, and learn to harness the persuasive power of visual media.‖ (NCTE Resolution on Visual Literacy) ―Media literacy refers to composing, comprehending, interpreting, analyzing, and appreciating the language and texts of…both print and non-print. The use of media presupposes an expanded definition of ‗text‘…print media texts include books, magazines, and newspapers. Non print media include photography, recordings, radio, film, television, videotape, video games, computers, the performing arts, and virtual reality…constantly interact…(and) all (are) to be experienced, appreciated, and analyzed and created by students. (Source: NCTE, Commission on Media, Carole Cox, 1994, p.13) Frank Baker: How important is ―media literacy‖ and should it be part of teaching standards in the U.S., as it is in Canada, Australia and Great Britain? Amy Goodman/Democracy NOW: ―Thanks for the question. Media literacy is critically important to 111

a democratic society. The great journalist IF Stone told journalism students there are two words they should remember: governments lie. I think many people have a natural skepticism about what government officials say. The problem is when the media act as a megaphone for those in power. The media is supposed to be, as we call our book, ―The Exception to the Rulers.‖ In the old Soviet Union, people knew to read between the lines of Pravda. Here in this country, the media has acted as a conveyer belt for the lies of the administration (and previous administrations). Just look at FAIR‘s study in the week leading up to and after Gen. Colin Powell gave his speech at the UN. Of the 393 interviews done by the 4 major nightly news casts around the issue of the war, ABC, CBS, NBC and PBS‘s News hour, only 3 were with antiwar representatives. That does not represent mainstream America. At the time a majority were against the invasion, for inspections and for diplomacy. This is not mainstream media, this is an extreme media, beating the drums for war and misusing the public airwaves.‖ ―When people talk to me about the digital divide, I think of it not so much about who has access to what technology as about who knows how to create and express themselves in the new language of the screen. If students aren‘t taught the language of 112

sound and images, shouldn‘t they be considered as illiterate as if they left college without being able to read and write?‖ George Lucas, filmmaker (Sept. 2004, Edutopia, Life on the Screen) ―Media Culture is the result of the industrialization of information and culture. Images, sounds and spectacles help produce the fabric of life, dominating leisure time, shaping political views and social behavior, and providing the materials out of which people forget their identities.‖ Doug Kellner ―Media literacy is concerned with helping students develop an informal and critical understanding of the nature of mass media, the techniques used by them, and the impact of these techniques. More specifically, it is education that aims to increase the students‘ understanding and enjoyment of how the media work, how they produce meaning, how they are organized, and how they construct reality. Media literacy also aims to provide students with the ability to create media products.‖ (Ontario Ministry of Education, 1997) ―Media literacy refers to composing, comprehending, interpreting, analyzing, and appreciating the language and texts of…both print and nonprint. radio, film, television, videotape, video games, computers, the performing arts, and virtual reality…constantly interact…(and) all (are) to be experienced, appreciated, and analyzed and created by students.‖(Source: NCTE, Commission on Media, Carole Cox, 1994, p.13) ―Being literate in contemporary society means being active, critical, and create users not only of print and spoken language but also of the visual language of film and television….Teaching students how to interpret and create visual texts….is another essential component of the English language arts curriculum. Visual communication is part of the fabric of contemporary life.‖ NCTE/IRA Standards for the English Language Arts (1996) as quoted in Journal of Adolescent & Adult Literacy, 48:1, September 2002, pps.74-75 ―Our young people need to be educated to the highest standard in this new information age, and surely this includes a clear awareness of how the media influences, shapes, and defines their lives,‖ says Richard Riley, U.S. Secretary of Education. ―And let us also recognize this important fact: These young people are the future media leaders of this nation.‖ Quoted in Linkup, June/July 2002 ―Media literacy is not just important, it‘s absolutely critical. It‘s going to make the difference between whether kids are a tool of the mass media or whether 114

the mass media is a tool for kids to use.‖ Linda Ellerbee, producer/host, Nick News ―No matter what the source, information is only powerful if students know what to do with it. As students are inundated with media messages, the challenge is not to amass more information, but to access, organize, and evaluate useful information from a variety of print and electronic sources.‖ Kathleen Tyner, author, ―Literacy in A Digital World‖ ―While media campaigns and other prevention strategies are essential ingredients for reducing substance abuse among adolescents, it is simply not possible for any federal agency, state organization, or private sector group to reach all young Americans with compelling and frequent messages about the dangers of drugs. So, instead, we must help give our young people the essential critical viewing skills to assess those messages–both direct and indirect– that glamorize drug-taking behavior, so that youth can see through the glitz and glamour to the underlying social ills of substance abuse, and to prepare their own prevention messages for peers, parents, and opinion leaders. We are learning that media literacy can provide this vision and skill in a powerful way…‖ Robert W. Denniston, of the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention of SAMHSA/HHA, on

the links between media literacy and problems associated with drug use by young people ―I firmly believe that more media literacy instruction can be very useful in our efforts to promote tolerance and combat violence. With the increased exposure of young people to an incredibly broad array of messages from an equally broad array of media messengers, it¹s all the more important that we teach our young people how to make sense of what they¹re seeing, hearing, and feeling. We need to teach them how to separate fact from fiction and fantasy. Only if we provide appropriate guidance can we expect our young people to understand that not everything on the screen has a place on the street corner or in the classroom.‖ US Attorney General Janet Reno, in interview with Cable In The Classroom‘s Al Race, 1999 ―Film and television, newspapers, books and radio together have an influence over individuals that was unimagined a hundred years ago. This power confers great responsibility on all who work in the media…[as well as] each of us who, as individuals, listen and read and watch….it is not the case that we have no power over what we take from the media.‖ ―When the media focuses too closely on the negative aspects of human nature, there is a danger that we become persuaded that violence and aggression are its principle characteristics…good 116

news is not remarked on precisely because there is so much of it.‖ Dalai Lama (Tenzin Gyatso‘s) 1999 book Ancient Wisdom, Modern World‖: Ethics For A New Millennium‖ p.210-212 ―Media literacy courses can give young people the power to recognize the difference between entertainment, television that is just bad and the information they need to make good decisions.‖ What they need is ―a clear awareness of how the media influences, shapes and defines their lives.‖ Richard Riley, US Secretary of Education, December 13, 1995 ―Media education can and has revolutionized the way we think about public health. The shift to a focus on the environment rather than the traditional focus on the host or agent has come about largely because of media education. We‘ve begun to see all kinds of problems that used to be seen as individual choices or flaws — from violence to substance abuse to eating disorders — as partly the result of the environment in which people make their choices. And the most important aspect of our environment, of course, is the media.‖ ―Huge and powerful industries — alcohol, tobacco, junk food, guns, diet — depend upon a mediailliterate population. Indeed they depend upon a population that is disempowered and addicted. These industries will and do fight our efforts with all 117

their mighty resources. And we will fight back, using the tools of media education which enable us to understand, analyze, interpret, to expose hidden agendas and manipulation, to bring about constructive change, and to further positive aspects of the media.‖ Jean Kilbourne, author: Deadly Persuasion : How Advertising Manipulates Us in an Age of Addiction ―It‘s important that parents and citizens really lobby for media literacy to be taught in schools, starting with kindergarten. We‘re doing our students a real disservice if we don‘t teach them to become critical consumers of the media.‖ Jean Kilbourne, quoted in Christian Science Monitor, November 24, 1999 ―It is no longer enough simply to read and write. Students must also become literate in the understanding of visual images. Our children must learn how to spot a stereotype, isolate a social cliché, and distinguish facts from propaganda, analysis from banter, and important news from coverage.‖ Ernest, Boyer, President, Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching: Former U.S. Commissioner of Education. ‖ Television may well be the most important innovation in communication since the printing press, and it communicates in images that as much visual and aural as verbal: learning the vocabularies of the arts, including the media arts, is an essential 118

tool for understanding, and perhaps one day communicating, in the medium of television.‖ 1988 National Endowment for the Arts report Toward Civilization ―First of all, I don‘t think anyone could claim to be media literate if he or she didn‘t understand that one of the principle functions of commercial media is not so much the provision of information or entertainment, but the segmentation and packaging of audiences for delivery and sale to advertisers… It‘s the audience which is the real product of the media, and not the programs.‖ – Len Masterman ―We must prepare young people for living in a world of powerful images, words and sounds.‖ UNESCO, 1982 ―The professional persuaders have the upper hand: money, media access, sophisticated personnel utilizing scientific techniques, aided and abetted by psychologists and sociologists skilled in analyzing human behaviour. All of that on one side. On the other side the persuadees: the average citizen and consumer. Who trains the citizen?….There is no coherent, systematic effort in the schools today to prepare our future citizens for a sophisticated literacy.‖ Hugh Rank, 1976, ―Teaching About Public Persuasion: Rationale and A Schema.‖ Teaching About Doublespeak

Media literacy is a basic tool for citizenship in an Information Society. Pat Aufderheide, Professor, School of Communication, American University Patricia Aufderheide, Associate Professor of Communication, American University, writes about the necessity of becoming media literate in a report of The National Leadership Conference on Media Literacy: ―Media literacy, the movement to expand notions of literacy to include the powerful post-print media that dominate our informational landscape, helps people understand, produce, and negotiate meanings in a culture made up of powerful images, words, and sounds…. A media-literate person – and everyone should have the opportunity to become one – can decode, evaluate, analyze, and produce both print and electronic media. The fundamental objective of media literacy is critical autonomy in relationship to all media. Emphases in media literacy training vary widely, including informed citizenship, aesthetic appreciation and expression, social advocacy, selfesteem, and consumer competence‖ (Aufderheide, l993). ―The development of curricula in media and visual literacy will not only sharpen people‘s ability to decipher their world, but it will also contribute to a broadening of the public sphere. Literacy is never just about reading; it is also about writing. Just as 120

early campaigns for universal print literacy were concerned with democratizing the tools of public expression–the written word–upcoming struggles for media literacy must strive to empower people with contemporary implements of public discourse: video, graphic arts, photography, and interactive digital media. More customary mainstays of public expression–expository writing and public speaking– must be resuscitated as well. ―Media literacy cannot simply be seen as a vaccination against advertising, public relations and other familiar strains of institutionalized guile. It must be understood as an education in techniques that can democratize the realm of public expression and will magnify the possibility of meaningful public interactions. Distinctions between publicist and citizen, author and audience, need to be broken down. Education can facilitate this process. It can enlarge the circle of who is permitted–and who will be able–to interpret and make sense of the world, of who will be seen and heard from in America‘s future.‖ Stuart Ewen (excerpt from ―PR, A Social History of Spin,‖ Used with permission) If, as Aristotle said, ―The unexamined life is not worth living,‖ so, in today‘s life, ―the unexamined culture is not worth living in.‖ George Gerbner, Bell Atlantic Professor of Telecommunication, TempleUniversity, Philadelphia 121

Essay No 20. (9.10.2015) Conspiracy Theories in a Area with a Surplus Of History I never liked holidays too much. In fact, through reading of the history books, I tend to notice a myriad of key dates that were once celebrated and are no longer recognized today. There are a variety of names that once labeled certain streets, or areas, but are no longer visible today. And indeed, there are a variety of countries that had a completely different name, but currently don‘t exist. This reminds me of my stay in Switzerland in 2006 when I saw a sign on a house where it was written that the name of the street, in the center of Geneva, had been there since 1642. I remember I paused, and thought of the miserable Balkan nation(s) that gives (and has given) the names to the streets — and is still giving — to invaders, murderers, criminals and pedophiles. This is done, all because of their masochistic desire to control, and that they eternally hope for a better, here and now. And that‘s why I do not like the holidays — because the are marked by certain events recorded in a historical time, and which we know just from different books for their content, and as such we can say that the history textbooks are books that are carefully written with ―chosen words.‖

123

Because of these ―chosen words,‖ I do not like the holidays, because I‘d love to know who and what is behind these ―chosen words,‖ and perhaps explain how we have seen how the Communists perish – like rotten pears. This little misery of a country that bears the name of Bosnia and Herzegovina — in which there are two entities that carry the name of the Republic of Srpska and the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina — next month celebrates a holiday. It celebrates Statehood Day or the Day of the State. Some claim that this is the most important day in the country‘s history. This is a day when half the country does not work (and for the half of that half I‘m a little bit suspicious) while the other half does. But what do they, or not, work for? In a word, ending the story of an area that once was upon a time was a country. And today it is a paradise for the predatory mafia, where the government prior to the National Day discusses powersharing with Parliament members, who represent that entity within the national level of Bosnia and Herzegovina, while at the same time people are starving. That‘s why I do not like the holidays. Because I have nothing to celebrate! I would love that:

80 percent of the poor people in Bosnia and Herzegovina would finally regain their sight and see through this charade To finally understand how they care less about the country, regardless of the name of the country To have finally an ESSENCE to replace the FORM and that we, methodologically, kick some gang asses That nationalism for the country can become a pedestal of sanity, instead of chauvinism for ethnos That democracy replace democrature So as to be able avoid to write these essays for Eurasia Review month after month, where I wonder if it is nothing more than just writing and talking. With a new associates and, fortunately, without giving up!

WikiLeaks, or in translation where you have been and what‘s up, pal? The whole world in the last five years is dealing with ―surprises,‖ ―disappointments‖ of various kinds about and due to the reports published by WikiLeaks, of nearly a million confidential documents from the correspondence of diplomats and politicians in US, but also in other countries. It is interesting how many ―empty-hollow‖ kind of stories can be found in one place. It would be enough for Julian Assange or Edward Snowden to come to Bosnia and 125

Herzegovina (in its both entities) and they would immediately become aware of how much secrecy exists here. Nothing! Not at all! Nada! Here is all done so transparently so that people, due to happiness, are starving. I think, perhaps, it would not be bad to take advantage of SOLAR YOGA in that here in Bosnia we could just freely walk under the sun of hope, while eating sunlight and drinking water. Just give us that, this little bit of happiness, because, in that case, all the conspiracy theories would not exist. Sadly, however, the problem of the ―leakage‖ of information in Bosnia and Herzegovina is even deeper and wider than anywhere else in the world, excuse me, on the planet. Specifically, we must first determine ―from whose house‖ information is leaking. Is it green (Muslim), red (Serbian) or blue (Croatian)? And only then will we find out whether it is true. But this again generates — you guessed it — a new problem. In fact, the truth depends on who you ask for an opinion. But there is here also something positive, innovative, and unique in the world. Here you have THREE truths (Croatian, Serbian and / or Muslim). What you would do now, dear Julian Assange or Edward Snowden? I would like to see you now, and how you would act?

126

About SATIRE I have a long experience within the field of literature. For almost four decades (to be precise: 36 years). I am active in all literary genres. The quality of what I publish, well I am the last one who should speak and write about that. I never thought that literature, the art of words, contained within itself some more or less valuable forms, or types, excuse me, genres. And everything that people do, realized and act in cooperation with other people. There are no abstract ―deciders‖ what is good today, here and now, and what will be good tomorrow. Baudelaire, Shakespeare, Twain, Bukowski, Pamuk and Andrić are the reflection of the individual waves within literary fate. Each and everyone of them, within their own hopes have a one quality more. But when we talk and write about satirists, I must emphasize that these are special writers, who do not hesitate, often by name, to indicate the distractions of society in which they inhabited, because of that they often suffer. Satire is the art of words, but the art of life is full of cruel and warning words. Those people who live in a way they write. People who have no prejudice and that write about absolutely everything that destroys tissue of development within their community. Satirists are not those who have a prejudice of any kind. 127

Those with prejudices may think they are satirists, but if they keep quiet about something, they indirectly place themselves under the skirts of manipulators of wonder, in other words, the beggars of the mind that are and will continue to manage our lives if we do not wake up, even slightly, the awareness of ―ordinary‖ people , our readers, first of all. Regardless if we write about ―communists, chauvinists, mediocrities, criminals …‖ we must not forget that you are what and how you‘re doing. You can think what you want about yourself, but if you play just for the survival or support for one system, one ideology, one vision … you will not go far. Also, literature as art sui generis changes and adapts to space and time in which is created. Please, do not call yourself a satirist if you do not have a stand. Everything else is a hoax. Even if you live in that kind of way, then you are on the pedestal of your own destiny with one aphorism of mine: ―I think. Therefore, I‘m hungry! ―Maybe it‘s better than to die as a servant … of the beggars of mind! IF I AM… 

Chauvinist, it would be good. Then I would, easily, among the writers, find interlocutors on the other side as well. Just as politicians together agreed on shares while they are agitating people(s) against each other. 128

Communist, it would be good. Within mourning for the ―good old days‖ I would collect scraps from the table of tycoon intentions, hoping that I would survive to greet the dawn. Not even realizing that tomorrow will be a conversation about our times as the good old days, having in mind that the World with each ―new times‖ lurches and sinking deeper within socially engaged anarchy, excuse me, chaos. Ass kisser, it would be good. I would go to the work from 08:00 to 16:00 hours and on daily bases I would talk about world politics, because none of my concern is hundreds of thousands of hungry people within my own country. I have something to eat. Within a time when my child grows up in hatred against the other and different one and with a goal of shaping of ―human servant‖ instead of ―human of existence-which aspires‖, whatever that means.

Anyway… 

Member of the Party, any, it would be good. I would found my bread within the circle of like-minded that has a mutual aim: To build a society for themselves and by themselves. For others, whatever they are calling themselves, there is a solution: Either you with us or you will not exist.

129

However, there is one problem. I cannot be any of the above, because I am transparent and open to the pain. Am I human? I do not know. We should wait for a century. For me to survive.

Essay No 21. (18.10.2015) What Would Happen If It Happened If in South-East Europe corruption reigns, then the lie becomes an all-seeing eye, and hypocrisy becomes the spiritus movens of everyday life. If Academic degrees are acquired overnight, and gas stations per capita are in a greater number than in most developed European states … If the marginalized call themselves as professional writers, and yet are party cronies who participate in a circulation of public service thanks to the party structures that are purchased by the pens of nonsense … If the veterans of the Homeland / Patriotic War became yesterday‘s members of the UDBA, KOS and similar birds (KOS translated from the BHSC language into English is BLACKBIRD) … If in Sarajevo, Belgrade, Podgorica and / or Zagreb the words: ―Beware, the bullet!‖, becomes to be recognizably a local tourist offer … If the people are happy only when the neighbor‘s cow dies, sorry, when the neighbor loses his job.

131

If there is no future now and neither will be, at least for the next fifty years or so … Well, my dear Milan (Serbian guy), dear Mehmed (Muslim guy) and dear Mario (Croatian guy), now nicely take a bucket of water and clean up the graffiti that you wrote at the entrance to our institution. And come on inside, to take your therapy, as today things will be a little enhanced. The General Manager is coming for an inspection. So for us to it is better to be safe, sorry, to ensure that all is ok. Just in case. Apocalypse / Armageddon Since the beginning of the Twentieth Century statistics have shown that so many people lost their lives in the senselessness of waging war, so many so that we do not need any more. And when one thinks that there is something, well, a little, calmed down, there you have cataclysms, and the Apocalypse or Armageddon, I am confident that it is behind the curve. Will it be by a meteor or a catastrophic earthquakes, as was the one in Japan, which wrapped that country into a black hole, but also the entire planet, or does that not matter at all. How so? Just because a human, that worthless form of laboratory experiments that originated in the energy 132

databases something of whom we are explicitly call God/Allah or so, we the poor, does not deserve anything better. We are mortal, being aware of that, but only at the end of our journey. Meanwhile, we are running for the money and fame and surviving on the hatred of others and those who are different from us and live on the other side of the fence. When we think that we are at the end of our journey, and have finally reached the end of our visions, there appears a cataclysm that has swept entire towns, as if a reflection of the tsunami of the soul, earthly one. The area of the Balkans, to be more precise, the area of South-East Europe…to be more precise, even — the territory of Serbia, Croatia, Montenegro, Macedonia, Slovenia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina — really deserves a tsunami of pure intentions, that aspires towards ascension. But what will happen soon, and I‘d love to, oh, how I wish to be wrong, is the conflicto in viva burdened with unresolved problems of the identity, the country, the nation. Uber Üllés! Looking at today, and occasionally the TV channels from the above-mentioned areas, I am reminded of the 1990-1992 years when the HE, the other one, was to blame because he is alive. Because, he breathes MY air. Because, he is walking on MY land; because, he is boosted with MY successes. Because, he lives my life. And we do not even realize that Yugoslavia will never be again, but there will be 133

no Greater Serbia or Greater Croatia, but, by God, not the Greater Bosnia and Herzegovina … Because we are so small within our misery that no tsunami, or the Ecumenical energy which sends that, with the help of an internal enemy, we are not within an interest at all. Believing this because of us the world rotates on its axis. Hating the success of others and is different precisely because he knows, he always wants to live a better life of its own intentions. I always wanted to live a decent life. Those desires generated by short-reflections. I do not blame anyone nor will I ever do it because the fact that being in the status of Outstanding / Distinguish artist in this region is a curse on the road of ascension! The struggle is constant, but never at the expense of other and different. Now, there‘s a problem. I miss that small ―rib‖ in my head that it makes. Too bad! And it could be a beautiful story. Of hatred. Surplus of history And yet, again, we are producing a history that we cannot bear: 1. In the past few years we have the fact that Serbia apologized (via the Board of Directors of Radio Television Serbia) for all incitement and bad words that the broadcaster did or sent not only to on their own, but also to the nations outside Serbia in the nineties, and that, behold, in 2011 caught a General Mladić, poor one, for whom did not know 134

where he was when he was 16 years old. O tempora, O mores! Lie of the worn truth! 2. Croatia in the EU, while Euro-skepticism like tsunami goes around that beautiful country. They do not realize, poor ones, that here is just the Great Hall of Globalism. Namely, that the EU is nothing, but the final incarnation of Orwell‘s vision of the world. And we do not complain. 3. Bosnia and Herzegovina even after twelve months from the elections it still does not have a proper government. Sorry, there is one, but a truncated one. And for us, the poor ones, it does not matter because both — within the government and without — there is no difference. Poverty, pain and the melting of a state. Ah, what Republic that used to be! 4. Macedonia cannot even use its name. She is the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. I swear to Greek! 5. Montenegro is a country ruled by Milo Đukanovic. The people call him a Chameleon — Of adaptability: Communist, Nationalist, Jingo, Liberal – 4 in the 1. He is stronger than Ness coffee – 3 in 1. 6. Slovenia lives much worse than it was before entering the European Union. But, for poor one, Brussels doesn‘t hear this!

135

7. Finally, the issue of Kosovo. It is a state, outside of Serbia. But if it is a state, then ask Serbia? Obviously, poor ones, neither of them cannot get together with each-other. So why then do they not restrict it? It cannot be, poor ones, because who is going to do that? Last, but not least, misery here is not nonsense, yet it is a basic postulate of living. Because, if there is no misery, fools could not rule and manipulate with tens of millions of wretches, nor argue or fuss and truly be the miserable ones, but after the elections, instead of enjoying themselves in misery. Indeed, one question, which I address first to myself, and then to you, dear reader, is inevitable: ―Is there anything we can do to make us feel better? We cannot! For what reason? Due to the surplus of history!‖ Hypocrisy Uber Üllés. When you cannot look into the personalities who yell loudly … enough … louder that cannot be, as we ought to live this little quantity of years in front of us that remains quietly and without objections towards invertebrates of the spirit that controls earthly efforts of the souls. Mine. When you cannot feel sorry for, and you do not hate, the callousness of fellow writers … who awards named by 136

antifascist author to exactly the fascist authors. To emphasize, because of the gray home which is called life. When you see that white is white and that cannot be whiter. And black has lost inwardly its meaningless suggestions. South-East Europe, your awakening will never happen, because you have never fallen asleep. When you cry over the graves of the local princess while the hope is vanishing that she will, perhaps, one day, be resurrected and hand over the happiness, whatever it is. When on the funeral of your dear friend, the poet and master of the short story, Samir Tahirović, the good soul from Donji Vakuf (Bosnia and Herzegovina), you meet former communists who worship towards the imaginary friend for adults … the same people who twenty-five years ago were arrested for salaams in public places. But who you are to judge? When you know you‘ve left a mark. Still just waiting the future Indiana Jones, while using a thin, dry brush, to clean up traces of the soul and reveal the future. Not yours, as you said, that left a mark, on your soul. When you see that, however, you survive, selling your own products to get through each month. And those products, of the moment when they get into the hands of potential

customers, become part of their sincerity. At least that is something you surely have. When the bearded man with short pants no longer swoops in and just using words and threatens the faith of your ancestors. They are pulling out the rifles. The Great Ape has not been announced yet with the decision to cut them off! When you know that more that 50 essays have been written for Eurasia Review is not a small portion. But, then not everything has been written, and not even read. On the record, especially.

Essay No 22. (25.10.2015) South-East Europe on the edge of civilization As always, that‘s what happens in the mountainous Balkan region, when an effigy does the characterization of his act within the answers of the title in a TV show that is watched by close to a million, and perhaps even more viewers, the errant sheep from the Balkans, well we always have fun with the form. The essence remains as discarded, worn shoe in a bilge of the passionate intentions of the local ones. Please, check out this on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J58Hsd5fciw In other words, leave me on my way directed towards ―honesty, national pride and commitment to the advancement of Croatian sport.‖ And what‘s the difference from what the politicians do to us for almost twenty-five years in the Balkans and this statement of the maliciouslypretentiously-ignorant shrimp? Within the issue that he said it publicly, while they do that to us secretly for almost two and half decades while we are, again and again, giving to them perfumed handkerchiefs to be able, before they penetrate again within the soul of righteous local ones, at least, to wipe our ass. Of the blood.

139

These areas did not deserve better, because the shortness of memories here is for the Guinness Book of Records. Only yesterday they were saying that ―no one will beat us,‖ and tomorrow the police (ours, of course) would make the exception that confirm the rule. Only yesterday, they said that the liberation of our nation was in ―ethnic cleansing and the removal of other and different‖ and today (in Bosnia and Herzegovina, primarily) exactly the power on the state level has been established by the side of ―angry enemies ‖ during the war years in the nineties of XX Century – parties SDA (Party of Democratic Action-Muslim party), HDZ (Croatian Democratic Union-Croat party), and SDS (Serbian Democratic Party – Serbian party). But politics is the art of the possible and as long as people have enough handkerchiefs, they will continue to work on that. Until the last Serb, Muslim (sorry, Bosniaks) and Croats on the ground exists. Not only in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The representation of the values in which ignorance is really the power, for us, the losers/poor ones, those who try to make direction of the hope towards a normal life on the road to death, is leaving only one option: The caw, up to the sky! – That this 2015 really becomes the end of civilization and such – on the entire planet. To truly realize the prophecy before the scheduled time and that we disappear, within a flash. Why, my dear 140

son Mitar (Serb one), Mladen (Croat one), Mehmed (Muslim one)? Because of all the Serbs, Croats, Muslims (sorry, Bosniaks), Albanians, Slovenes, Macedonians, Montenegrins, Romes, Rusin‘s and other … who are now rushing towards the Dragon Lady Europe (along with the ―brothers‖, the people of Syria, Egypt, Afghanistan, Iraq) hoping that will find salvation while the land, the cradle of democracy, as we know, Greece, is sinking in its own absurdity of own shenanigans servings (thief kind, man). And will be surprised. Not a little. While they watch the spin in the form of advertising of the large TV house FOX (by the way, behind that TV house is ―the biiig‖ and ―laaarge‖ Republican US capital) on channel FOXCRIME, where Santa Claus beaks into a house not to give, but to steal … (happened in 2012), with the comment that doing the crime is worthy to be shown on FOXCRIME. Is that just on a TV station? Or has it become so obvious that we do not see besides having eyes, full of tears. Because, to be precise. In 2012 in 95th year of age of his life in Macedonia, died Kiro Gligorov, another one of the great sons of ex-nations and nationalities (meaning: Yugoslavia). In spite of chauvinist-nationalist gang while I hear Tito‘s voice at the entrance to Paradise (communist one, of course) while he was angry waiting and doing the tap dancing, saying: ―You prolonged it, Comrade Kiro.‖ 141

Replies he will not get. The reason? Comrade Kiro resisted (but he is not the only one) against even worse. Ladies and gentlemen, former comrades, what us, mere mortals, comforts is that we will, no matter how rich and / or poor we are together go into a hug … of the end of the world, very soon, right? I hope, I do really hope so. If I even make mistake, it may be only within a few years of difference. But what is time? It does not even pass, because, it does not exist. People pass, because they have existed, like the workers that protest because of hunger and destroyed firms, in which they have worked for decades in Tuzla, Bosnia and Herzegovina, on 21.10.2015. P.S. Happy New Year of 2016- ARMAGEDDON one. XXX Darkness of the colors In Bosnia and Herzegovina is the problem that nothing happens/going on. Pseudo-events change one after the other. On the one hand, the media denounce politicians that they take with ―excavators‖, because they left over ―the shovels‖ to the lowers administrative officials.

142

On the other hand we have politicians who say that this is the attack on the green, red and / or blue people of this area because they have been attacked just because they are members of this or that. Look, the people(s), and so for the twenty-five years in the row. Twenty-five years of protracting of the mind (if any exist) of the local righteous ones who all felt it. Except those 5% who own 95% of the wealth. Beys, princes and counts – the tycoon ones. We‘ll go without gloves if that is necessary. I‘m ashamed to be the Bosniak (Muslim) and Croat (Catholic) and Serb (Orthodox) in the country where more believers never existed (ever since, the dawn of the mankind) as it is now, and where has never be more thievery. O tempora, o mores! When I made this statement and being a guest at one cable TV station in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Anno Domini 2012, during that spring, nobody even scratched himself/herself. Not even to review the meaning of those words. Who am I, some kind of a writer, journalist, PhD student … Here people no longer exist because the mobs that are walking within this areas, and among them including a writers, journalists, PhD students loaded with its Serbianism, Muslimanism, Croatinism, Slovenianism, Macedonianism, Albanianism, do not want anything else but to be a masochist of their own destiny . It is not a destiny.

143

It is a choice. Painful is that choice of theirs for me and, I hope also for, at least 10%, those who are trying to be human, and fails because a ripe apple in the company of nine rotten ones cannot survive. Ridiculed was and thrown at the Scaffold of ominous hopes. I console myself with the thought that I would go from this Earth with a smile on my face, because, I did not want to take what they have offered to me. In return, they took everything from me, except the smile, death agony of the sincere intentions of the human. Is it?. Today, when the demo(n)cracy is on the pedestal of almightiness directions, there has been a changes. We are facing the new people, Chameleons of presumed indications. In fact, sleeping on a cushion with the color of carnation, during the same evening they, before going to sleep, are praying to green, blue and / or red God/Allah/Buddha. What about the writers, the other 90%? Fully equivalent to stated. They adapt to, cooperate with black devil, only to survive in the hope that someone will one day write about them as a possible alternatives, in writing. Darkness embraced us, regardless if we are blue, green and / or red. I do not like the colors. The mind creates matter and not vice versa. Therefore, I will create a new color, thinking one, while I am going into…the darkness of colors. XXX 144

Blindness until the end of time I want to know… What happened in 1914? What happened in 1918? What happened in 1941? What happened in 1945? What happened in 1992? What happened in 1995? What I look at the time of writing today and over here, Anno Domini 2015, on the twenty-seventh day, tenth month consciously I see and I will write about with a time deviation, of course. More important is that somebody finally says what‘s happened in the past and why the vast majority of people are suffering today, while ―negligible‖ minority constantly asks itself: ―Why are people rebelling? It has never lived better. ‖ The conclusion is imposed by itself. It is not here talk about on the nationalists, chauvinists, communists, socialists, democrats, fascists, nazis, humanists, kingdoms and / or princesses.

Here, my dear brother, the story is about thieves: Follow the money 145

Yes, bundled up in the left, right, left- right and / or rightleft options they are constantly, in the last hundred years, selling to us a fog cloaked in the interests of this or that in order to ensure the welfare for the people and / or society – in the formal sense. While, within the deep vital, essential terms of a being it‘s all spinning (and, unfortunately will) about the money. Let‘s leave this essayistic reflection aside and look within your environment with open eyes how yesterday‘s beggars of the mind (read: any of the above) built the huge buildings and gardens while today beggars of the spirit (read: sheep that are called the citizens and the people) still, in a silly way, wildly vote for them. And then makes the revolt, strike, hate, going into the war because of the language and symbols … Instead to be silent, receiving that little portion of currency: Convertible marks (BiH), Dinars (Serbia) and Kunas (Croatia) and enjoy the benefits of the rule given by the side of freely elected representatives of the people, which Democracy has been called, being methodologically inspired, by Prof. Dr Arend d’Angremond Lijphart from the Netherlands. Because they have just voted for them, and there is no need for protests. Let‘s get back issues from the beginning of this essay. Indeed, what happened in the past hundred years? The answer is simple, but we still do not see it.

146

Simple, as I said: ―The constant and ruthless plunder of the citizens and the local people‖. And what is the solution? There is none. Those areas, but unfortunately not only those one, are still guided, by whether we want to admit it or not, with the invisible hand of shame lodged in the genes of this civilization. Never was born the one who pleased everybody, because, just please do not forget what has happened to the One 2015 years ago, from when we count our present time. He wanted to help everyone and everybody and got the crucifixion, of his own. So, my dear readers, citizens and local people of the World (yes, of the World), enjoy the elections of your own destiny (from North and South America down to Australia, Africa, Europe….) by choosing your own executioners. And do not protest and be against anything. For, as long as you vote, you will always elect them – executioners, social and / or spiritual ones. Anyway, the satire could be of help for us to liberate us, if nothing else, of the current, bad thoughts. Because do not forget, a Serbian writer Radoje Domanović wrote the ―Leader‖ who led the people who did not see that he was blind. But, the leader(s) is/are never blind, unlike his ―Leader‖, within the story.

147

Nations and citizens, however, are blind, until the end of time.

Essay No 23. (15.11.2015) Why We Should Not Ask US For Help The first reason, above all, is because the International community, including the USA and EU, has made this paralyzed state possible. But, to be more precise this article will be more focused on the essay published by the distinguished author Rodolfo Toe from Balkan insight, which focused on a few issues (I do accept that those are among the major ones, but…) within the problems related to current Bosnia and Herzegovina society. But, as I have said, We cannot solve the problem by solving the consequences. The causes should be solved about which I have been writing within Eurasia Review for almost the last two years. So, let us focus on the following, as the main causes: 

Nobody can be elected if he/she is not part of the constitutive people (Serb, Muslim-Bosniak, Croat) of Bosnia and Herzegovina; Remember the story of Sejdić/Finci In Bosnia and Herzegovina, a country with a population of 3,791,662, you have one state (Bosnia and Herzegovina) with a Presidency (three 149

members – guess who?), Council of Ministries and a Chairman of that; Parliament and House of Peoples, two entities (Federation of BiH and Republic of Srpska) with their Parliaments, President of each entity and Prime-Minister for each, and Ministries within each entity (16 ministries for FBiH and 16 for Republika Srpska). Also, there is one District – Brĉko District with its own Government. And here does not finish everything: Within Federation BiH there are ten cantons with their own Governments and 143 municipalities (79 in Federation BiH and 64 in republic of Srpska). So, please count and you will see that each one of us, the citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina, until the end of his life might be at least be a Minister or Member of municipal council. Who then will do the all work? For sure, not those 58% who are the current unemployed young people and up to 44% of unemployed in general in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The letter from my distinguished colleagues from SEESOX (South East European Studies at Oxford) published on 14.11.2015. in Eurasia Review is good to be realized within an already properly shaped up country heading towards democracy. But here? Nothing before we unpack the Dayton Accord and pack it again, 150

using consensuality of the citizens and not of the nations. I respect that letter and agree with it, but… If we continue to ask the leaders of the nations how to do it we will never do it. If we decide to establish the state which will serve the citizens and not the nations, we will have that above mentioned as democratic state. How we will do that? Simple as it is: 1.

Start with Lustration through the listening the sound of the future and not of the past. 2. Continue with Education through the listening the sound of the future and not of the past. 3. Finish with the establishment of the society in which will worth to exist on the bases of your work and knowledge and not on the basis of membership of the party (does not matter left and/or right in BiH) and ignorance. The essay of distinguish colleague Rodolfo Toe is good for a presentation of thoughts and good for small push, but will it help us, over here in Bosnia and Herzegovina? I have doubts. Why? Let me ask just one question: Were the all changes that has been made in Bosnia and Herzegovina 151

since the Dayton Peace Accord back in 1995 accepted willingly by politicians? The answer is again, simple – No, and it was imposed by the International community. Is there a solution? Again, unpack and re-pack the Dayton Accord, because even the war was better back in 1992-1995. Back then we at least all knew against who we were fighting. Today, we don‘t. Sorry, we do, but we cannot. Why? The answer to this is known by the International community, together with our nationalistic leaders.

Essay No 24. (23.11.2015) 25 November, Statehood Day, Bosnia And Herzegovina Instead of repeating the never ending mantra of not making it possible to agree within the borders of Bosnia and Herzegovina (and within its two entities of Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Republic of Srpska) in regards to which day should be celebrated the country‘s Statehood Day, shall we admit, at least, that we agree to disagree. Even furthermore, after knowing that, can we can climb up and, after reading this link, arrange possible alternatives for the mentioning mantra of having just one part of the country to celebrate the date (just Federation of BiH). Why should only just one part of the country celebrate the mentioned date as Statehood Day? Again, they (read: people(s) representatives on the power) have agreed to disagree until the end of time about the mentioned day. Again, just check out the link above. So, is there a solution? Yes, there are always a lot of solutions and we will just, methodologically, present one, which seems (to underline: for me), most suitable for all parties involved. Nevertheless, the Dayton Peace Agreement stated that (new) Bosnia and Herzegovina would have continuity 153

with the former Republic Bosnia and Herzegovina and that is eo ipso, also the continuity of…for Statehood Day: ―On this day in 1943, the Anti-Fascist Council of Bosnia and Herzegovina (ZAVNOBiH) adopted a resolution declaring Bosnia and Herzegovina an equal community of Serbs, Muslims and Croats.‖ … Again, that day has legitimacy in accordance with continuity, but…Living in, as we know, a very much paralyzed state exactly because of the Dayton Peace Agreement which stopped the war, but has created a Frankenstein state about which I wrote in Eurasia Review, ―disagreement‖ as a state of mind exists here as the Law above all the Laws, and even above the Constitution as it is (again, why talk about the Constitution if it has never passed the Parliamentary procedure?). The solution is, having in mind a consensual system within democracy as written by Arend d’Angremond Lijphart: „In fact, consensual systems stimulate economic growth, control inflation and unemployment, and limit budget deficits just as well as majoritarian democracies do. And, consensus democracies clearly outperform majoritarian systems on measures of political equality, women‘s representation, citizen participation in elections, and proximity between government policies and voter preferences…Consensus democracy has particular advantages for deeply divided societies. Majoritarian democracy might be criticized for excluding almost half the population from the governmental process, since it can leave 49.9% of the population out of the policy process. In 154

the literature, we read that this criticism is void under two conditions. First, if today‘s minority has a realistic chance of becoming tomorrow‘s majority, then exclusion probably isn‘t a major problem, since each half of the country takes its turn being in charge (which will tend to moderate abuse of the minority by the majority). Second, if society is sufficiently homogeneous, then exclusion might not be a major problem, since the excluded minority‘s interests don‘t differ much from the majority‘s. Lijphart contests these two arguments by pointing out that in many societies, especially in societies with deep ethnic, linguistic, religious, or ideological cleavages, neither condition holds. These deep divisions can prevent crossover (―swing‖) voting, preventing today‘s minority from ever having a realistic chance of being tomorrow‘s majority. Moreover, there is unlikely to be much overlap between the minority‘s and the majority‘s interests in such a society. Thus, the minority‘s permanent exclusion might lead to unrest or violence. Consensus democracy is Lijphart‘s institutional solution to this problem, allowing democracy to function by incorporating minority rights and allowing minority groups to influence policies. Though there might be less turnover in the legislature (see p 7), governments will represent a broader swath of interests.― (see pgs 31-33). The solution is there and we just need to dig it up from, as mentioned above, a deeply divided society as is Bosnia and Herzegovina. The answer is not (and will not) be found blowing in the wind, but will be found here:

155

The Statehood Day (which exists and being accepted by all sides within the continuity of Bosnia and Herzegovina) might be any day during November. To make it simplest, we can even put in between 21.11.2015 (for Republic of Srpska, the day of signing of Dayton Peace Agreement) and 25.11.2015 (for the Federation of BiH this is a historical date from 1943 as mentioned above). A consensual system is the system in which nobody‘s freedom to choose, think and act might jeopardize anybody else‘s freedom to choose, think and act. Why? Because, if not, then freedom does not exist for anybody. Instead, it becomes organized…anarchy. A consensual system is the system of a win/win situation in which we can all gain something, until we find the final solution, in the days to come. If we, over here in Bosnia and Herzegovina, continue to negate any of above of the dates (21.11. and/or 25.11.) we will again establish the possibility for developing new conflicts in the future. Can we make 23.11.2015 as the Statehood date of Bosnia and Herzegovina, which will encircle both (Dayton Peace Agreement and Decision made by Anti-Fascist Council of Bosnia and Herzegovina) dates and at the same time let both of entities celebrate their dates as it is now? How that can help us?

156

1. It will satisfy the ―owners‖ (read: elected politicians) of the entities being right in what they are saying. 2. It will satisfy ―the others‖ (read: real people(s) of Bosnia and Herzegovina (in both entities) which will have their date that will encircle both mentioned dates. 3. It will establish excellent ground for the future talks within Bosnia and Herzegovina society as the whole – which will be based on equality and not supremacy of any kind over anybody (not even Muslims, not even Serbs and not even Croats). And, who knows, we might be able one day to, according to the above-mentioned consensuality focused agreement: agree to agree, finally. A long time ago I wrote that (in BiH) we are three tribes of the same people – the only problem is: which one! What do you think? Shall we try? Can we finally find out…which one?

Essay No 25. (7.12.2015) Dancing With Wolves Everybody within the area of South-East Europe older than 35 years know the famous song from Tito‘s time: ―From river Vardar up to mountain Triglav―1, which today has become just folklorist nostalgia without any political articulation, but at the same time the title of the song has been implemented directly and severely…within the area of criminal and nationalism (read: chauvinism) activity. Once upon a time a former2 friend of mine told me a story: In ancient Bosnian villages there existed a custom of so-called Dancing with Wolves3, when a group of people gathered and among them there was also somebody who had the task of preparing a good lath, even a bat, which had, in its ending (upper one, titled Melee) a special twisted part that was extremely painful for the one who was beaten. Nevertheless, that group would find a victim who would be beaten the same night — after which the person would become a third category cripple. He or She could not recover from that beating for the rest of their life. Additionally, the victim had to observe silence about the beating. Because, whoever did the Dance with Wolves, meant that they did not have anything to do with Society and or the State, but with, it is so obviously, instead a People’s court. In a nutshell, this showed that Society 159

and/or the State could not solve the problem of the mentioned person. What is the reason for this story to be written? Simple as it is – that in today‘s current environment it would be more than welcomed a Dance of the above mentioned kind. Today there are so many sinful persons within the area of the former Yugoslavia4 that indeed there could be organized Festival of Dancing with Wolves, and even nowadays it could be an international one. Talking about sin should be contradictio in adiecto because, when comparing with the Socialist period of time, out of 2.5 million people – members of Communist Party of Yugoslavia, just roughly 250,000 of them continue to support Social–Democrats (amazing how they define Social Democracy here – it is more neo-liberal organized anarchy) and the rest of them have become national party supporters. When I write ―national‖ I surely mean: nationalistic, chauvinistic and exclusive parties that are living within a cocoon of nonsense saying that their truth is the only one. Also, if they (2,250,000 former members of Communist party of Yugoslavia plus at least another 1,000,000 ―new born‖ members of above mentioned national parties out of a population of 23 million in the area) really follow up the words from the Book (Bible and or Holy Koran) they would

160

love their neighbor, say the truth all the time and live honest and dissent lifes. Unfortunately, the real truth is exactly the opposite, just as reflected within the question that I have asked, at the end of a one hour interview conducted by a female journalist for the local Cable TV Hema in Sarajevo, back in 2012: If religion means honesty, love and decent living, why then we nowadays don‘t we have more believers and fewer sinners and thieves? She did not answer me. Maybe, the answer is within…Dancing with Wolves. Notes: 1. River Vardar is in Macedonia and Mountain Triglav is in Slovenia 2. His name is Edhem, eloquent economist from small town of Turbe nearby city of Travnik in Central Bosnia and Herzegovina. Political reasons has stopped our friendship – that is the answer – simple as it is. 3. Kevin Costner does not have anything to do, God forbid, with mentioned. 4. Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Serbia, Kosovo*, Macedonia

Essay No 26. (28.12.2015) Rock ‘N’ Roll Will Never Die When talking about the year just ahead of us, 2016, we cannot do so without focusing on a good old story of ―unfinished‖ business. Namely, the beauty of ignorance within the area of South-East Europe is so obvious that is inspirable to talk about – especially when talking about History as magistra vitae. Here, however, History is just the opposite – a magistra of death. And yet, about the past it is best to talk about it. It‘s almost as if, because my past, and our past was so devastated, that we must to continue to devastate the past of others and those who are different from us, as they continuously are saying, while not thinking at all that here the ―other and different‖ is so close (culturally, historically, socially, genetically…) to me and us. But this will not stop me and us to hate him or her because to avoid doing so only reminds me of who I really am. Europe is sinking because of a rise of chauvinism and nationalism. The world is on the edge of thoughts and exclusion, through the mouths of creatures such as Donald Trump, who are full of hatred towards the ―others and different ones,‖ starting with immigrants from Latin America and continuing towards Muslims. Who knows, maybe within Trump‘s blood (which is red, by the way, the same color as the blood of ―others and different ones‖) there 163

are some blood cells of his (there is confirmed info that war criminal Adolf Hitler had some Jewish blood as well, as was written within the Telegraph back in 2010) that are the same as from the people he is now attacking, from Latin America to Middle East. Why, is this happening now in this era of the new media revolution and a radical shift — changing everything we are supposed to think to help people, in general, to shift towards a better understanding of each other — and where there is no lack of information about ―other and different ones‖? That‘s because there is a Catch 22 within the digital world of new reality: Absurdum is anarchy within Internet and, of course, that the more suitable and sophisticated approach to propaganda is a reflection on the human mind is more radical than ―ordinary‖ people like us. Why is this? Because global world controllers, regardless of whether we think that they exist or not (my quote: ―Theory of conspiracy does not exists, but it works!‖) does not need a world of peace. Again, why? If we had peace, then what would happen with enormous production of weapons and ammunition? What would happen with all the humanitarian aid organizations? What would happen with all the socalled NGO‘s, fighters for human rights and survival of human kind all around the world? After all, what would happen to each and every state in the World if peace become GOOD FOR ALL AND NOW.

164

It is a utopia for the now and for good. Why? The answer is simple: Real believers in world peace are not going to churches, mosques and parliamentary assembles around the world. Real believers act not through any kind of world aid of NGO organizations. Real believers act through their personal stands, opinion and behavior reflected within the strong attitude that whoever kills one person, kill the entire world. But, again, is the answer a continuum of the never admitted anarchy that is reflected in the never-ending story of World wars, which started in the beginning of last century and continue into the beginning of this one as well? Is there an answer in depopulation through the planned activities of local wars and airplanes for spraying? Nevertheless, recent developments in the area of South-East Europe show that something is again (sic!) happening behind the screen and developing into a new disaster: 1. In Croatia, there was the inauguration of a new president on 15.2.2015 (Ms. Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović from the nationalist right center party HDZ) and after recent Parliamentary elections (8.11.2015) where the mentioned party is back in power together with another so called THE BRIDGE of independent lists (nobody knows who are they, but if they have coalition with HDZ, it stinks of being a ―right‖ one). 165

2. In Serbia, there was the inauguration of new president since 31.5.2012 (Mr. Tomislav Nikolić) from the nationalist right-center party SNS and after recent Parliamentary elections back in May 2012. 3. In Bosnia and Herzegovina from the Republic of Srpska and Milorad Dodik (Serb), who as the president who does not respect at all, as president of one entity, the state of BiH as the whole country up to Dragan Ĉović (Croat) who, together with Bosniak-Muslim member of presidency of BiH creates fairy tale of one and joint opinion on everything, but…all of them are nationalists (two out of three of them even former communists). Why I have stated the situation within three former Yugoslavian republics? Because the mouth of the leaders are full of European integration (Croatia is even member of EU) and mutual understandings, but in real-time all of them are heavily loaded with hatred against the ―other and different ones‖ under the table. So, what we can expect within the next 3-4 years for the Balkans? Just to remind you, after the so-called democratic elections in former Yugoslavian republics back in 1990 and end of Yugoslavia, it took only – not almost two years – to have bloodiest war ever in Europe after World War II which lasted, with few interruptions until 1999. Somebody said it never stopped. Leaders of the people just took a break/intermezzo.

166

Again, why? The Constitutional Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina issued a ruling just a month ago, which was rejected even by Parliament of Republic of Srpska and in the same time Prime Minister of Serbia, Aleksandar Vuĉić will come on 09.1.2016 and jointly celebrate the Day of Republic of Srpska in Banja Luka, with Milorad Dodik, president of Bosnia and Herzegovina entity – Republic of Srpska. It will happen regardless of the ruling of Constitutional Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina that mentioned ―Republic Day‖ does not reflect the wishes all constitutional citizens of that BH entity and that day is not in accordance with Constitution of BiH. The Constitutional Court of BiH gave to the Assembly of Republic of Srpska period of 180 days to agree upon the ruling of Constitutional court of BiH. At the same time, with the growing up of the nationalistic parties in Federation part of BiH (recent coalition of Muslim SDA party and Muslim SBB party on Federal level) some chauvinistic and terroristic acts have happened recently, from the killing of two soldiers in the Sarajevo suburban area on 19.11.2015 and more recently, on 22.12.2015, the arrest of 11 suspected Islamist terrorists in Sarajevo again, who were, apparently planning to kill at least 100 hundred people in a bomb blast during New Year Eve 2016 in Sarajevo. Amazing, how those terrorists start to expose rapidly themselves during the returning back in power of right wing parties. Is it a 167

coincidence or not, we can only guess, until this country becomes to respect the Rule of Law, instead as it is nowadays which is the Law of Rule. In Croatia, with entering to European Union, all different right wing parties became popular again (as it was in nineties of the last century) within the last couple of years and even some of them had fascistic sayings like what has been said recently by Ladislav Ilčić (established as ―Croatian Donald Trump‖), on 13.12.2015 and related to Muslims.…quote: ―He stated that the refugees coming from Africa and Asia are ―biologically stronger‖ than the Europeans and have many children. Ilĉić himself admitted later in another interview that he has five children and shares many of the cultural views of Muslims. He said, however, that although children are equally valuable, they are different‖..end of quote. Amazing, isn‘t it. Finally, what we can expect within the new media revolution and radical shift with the radicals on power – or, as they would like to be called, ―right center‖? Nothing good and nothing special we can expect within the area of South-East Europe. Why, again? Because, they are all ready to re-start the bloody war against the ―other and different ones‖ just and only to stay in power within the area where more than 50 % of people are unemployed. Is that enough? Want more? OK, they are willing even to agree to kill some of their own and 168

blame others. Want more? They will make coalition with even angry enemies, like late Muslim leader of BiH, Alija Izetbegović which has made with right wing Serbian party SDS after the war just to avoid to have ―communists‖ as SDP (it is surprising that they: SDP – have connection with communists as I do with nationalists) back on power in 1996, after the war in BiH. So, Very Happy New 2016 Year to the area of South East Europe quoting my 29 year old son who answered my question on 26.12.2015: ―Where do you see Bosnia and Herzegovina ten years from now? (it is the same for Croatia and Serbia as well)…the following: ―Behind my back.‖ Painfully, but truthfully, it is real. That is why the rock‘n‘roll… of stupidity…will never die - Especially in our dear Balkans‘ countries. 16.1.2016, Albany, Oregon, USA.

Book review by Robert Steven Duncan5 Review: SOUTH EAST EUROPE AT THE EDGE OF CIVILIZATION One cannot doubt the passion behind ―South East Europe At The Edge of Civilization,‖ for this is the work of a passionate being, a man who has suffered – and is suffering still – for his country and for the dashed illusions of millions who were led to believe they were entering into a new era of a Promised Land. This New Land, as observed under the literary microscope of poet and author Sabahudin Hadžialić, builds upon a Miltonesque approach that identifies the hopes and aspirations of a populace that has been ravaged by unspeakable violence – only to see the ―Paradise Lost‖ as the result of the mounting sins of those very persons who had promised deliverance. In this respect, these saviors – and here Hadžialić is quite clear in naming them and their sins – it would appear are actually quite the contrary, and each has a special place reserved in one of the Nine Circles of Hell, as elucidated by Dante. When reading ―South East Europe At The Edge of Civilization,‖ and Hadžialić's descriptions of the offending politicians and key regional players, one can almost imagine placing each of the described illustrious players in their own 5

particular Circle within the ―Inferno‖: Limbo, Lust, Gluttony, Greed, Anger, Heresy, Violence, Fraud and Treachery. Hadžialić's distinctive style in writing ―South East Europe At The Edge of Civilization‖ draws upon his background primarily as a poet and essayist – he has published 16 books of poetry and prose (stories, aphorisms, stage plays, novels) and essays in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, France, USA, Italy and Switzerland. Born in Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina, when reading Hadžialić's essays one cannot but feel the almost guttural love he experiences for his country – and the subsequent pain for the failure of the region to live up to those earlier promised expectations. It is almost as if Hadžialić embodies the essence of being Bosnia and Herzegovina's jilted lover. In this respect, it could be all too easy to just classify Hadžialić as a tortured soul. And, yet, that would be too simplistic, for Hadžialić's writings aren't about just casting dispersion upon the power elite as a result of unrequited love. Indeed, it is out of a more profound love that Hadžialić delves and cuts with his literary knife to expose societies deeper ills, in the hopes that a creeping cancerous growth may be amputated. And with his findings, we too must share the pain from these surgical cuts. For indeed, the blame doesn't solely rest with those in power – no indeed, here Hadžialić is quite clear. Ultimately, the blame must rest soundly upon our own shoulders, for we are the ones who are are responsible for the perversions 172

of justice, we are the ones who have allowed such a system to be created by our willful ignorance and complacence. Indeed, if we are honest, we must ask to which Circle of Hell are we condemning ourselves? And at the end of the day, isn't this really a message of Love – after all, Hadžialić is asking us to save ourselves.
