A
s always seems to be the case, Southern and Northern California dominated the player selection for the International Federation Cup teams in Antalya, Turkey this October. Martin Barba, Curtis Dunn and Rick Kepler were named to the Men’s 40 Trabert Cup team. Dunn will also be captain. He was a member of last year’s Men’s 35 Italia Cup team. In 2007, the Trabert Cup team finished fourth. Kepler, who was on that team, along with Barba, was forced to withdraw from ‘08 play. Polo Cowan, Glenn Erickson Martin Barba Mike Fedderly and Mike Fedderly are members of the Men’s 45 Dubler Cup team. Erickson, taking a page from Dunn’s book, will be captain. With his selection, Cowan adds to his family’s international cup prestige because his mother Ada was a member of a number of US women’s teams. Four was a special number for Erickson in 2007, having reached the final of all the Men’s 45 national championships. The same holds for Fedderly, who with Val Wilder (also on the team) scored a Gold Slam winning all of the 45 national doubles titles. The duo was on the Dubler Cup team that Polo Cowan finished third last year. I was selected, along with Phyllis Blackwell, to play on the Women’s 50 Bueno Cup team. I will also serve again as captain. Blackwell, a teaching pro from Reno, and a former Women’s Tennis Association competitor, will be making her Cup team debut. Martha Downing and Tina Karwasky will be members of the Women’s 55 Connolly Cup team. Karwasky, who was on last year’s winning squad, will be captain. (continued on next page)

Ken Robinson, a NorCal Hall of Famer, was named to the Men’s 65 Britannia Cup team. The US was a finalist in the 2007 competition in Ashburton, New Zealand. Cathie Anderson, Charleen Hillebrand and Suella Steel, all members of last year’s victorious Women’s 65 Godfree Cup team, were on the initial team named. Unfortunately, Anderson had to withdraw. Hillebrand, a finalist at all the 65 nationals a year ago, won a doubles Martha Downing Gold Slam with Steel. They added to their trophy haul, winning the ITF World 65 Doubles title. Steel had a career year in 2007, winning the National Hard, Grass and Indoor titles over Hillebrand. She was also a National Women’s 60 Hard Court finalist. Bob Duesler and Jim Nelson who were members of the Men’s 70 Crawford Cup team, (a finalist in ’07), are involved again. (Nelson will be captain.) Duesler was phenomenal winning the National Hard, Clay and Indoor singles, and the Hard, Clay and Grass doubles with Nelson last season. He was also a 2007 ITF World Doubles Championships finalist with Herm Ahlers. With Doris deVries, Roz King and Dorothy Matthiessen (as well as Burnett Herrick) on the Ken Robinson Women’s 70 Gibson Cup team in 2007, the US won easily. Given the success, it isn’t surprising that the trio is back, looking for a 2008 conquest. DeVries, a singles finalist at the 2007 ITF World Championships, will again be captain. She ended Matthiessen’s Gold Slam bid last season by winning the Hard Courts. King, a doubles talent, (undefeated in Gibson Cup doubles play), was a 2007 ITF World Doubles Championships finalist. This is a memorable year for Saul Snyder. He was named to the Men’s 75 Grant Cup team, giving him his first opportunity to participate in an international competition representing a US squad. In ’07, the team was a finalist. For the fourth consecutive year, Graydon Nichols is on the Men’s 80 Mulloy Cup team. As he was a year ago, when the US won, Nichols will be captain. In 2007, he claimed the National Men’s Hard, Clay and Grass court championships in singles and doubles, and the ITF World 80s singles title. He ended the year ranked No.1 in the US and ITF rankings. he Germantown Cricket Club was the new host of the National Women’s 55 Grass Court Championships. As the saying goes, “Some like it hot”. And it was. The entire week featured high temperatures and humidity. The heat index topped 100 several days. Despite the conditions, the draw was deep. In a singles semifinal, Tina Karwasky defeated Anne Guerrant 7-6, 6-2. The first set was close and could have gone either way. The top seeded Karwasky said, “After winning the first set, I gained momentum against the net rusher and was able to close things out.” Karwasky continued saying of her doubles partner, “In the other semifinal, Mary Ginnard played flawlessly, defeating Leslie Pixley 6-0, 6-0.The match was over before I finished my first set with Anne.” The final produced a rousing three setter. “I won the first set 6-2, playing solidly from the baseline and taking a d v a n t a g e o f a ny opportunity to come in and knock off volley winners,” Karwasky Tina Karwasky was the 55 singles and doubles, said. “Mary, determined winner with Mary Ginnard. to make a comeback, won the first two games of the second set. Volleying convincingly, she closed it out 6-1. I got an early break in the third set and won it 6-3. We were both tenacious in the hot and muggy conditions. Contending with steamy sunglasses and many towel-offs between points was the only way we could hang onto our racquets.” Karwasky and Ginnard captured the doubles over surprising opponents. “Ruth Daub and Barbara Sasser, who were unseeded, had the tournament of a lifetime,” Karwasky said. “They defeated Cynthia Babb/Susan Peffier, the No. 2 seeds, 3-6, 7-6, 6-3 in the quarters, and Peg Machoian/Joan Oelsclager, the No. 4 seeds, 6-3, 6-2 to reach the final. We ended their run 6-3, 6-2, and picked up our second National Women’s 55 doubles title this year.” Concluding, Karwasky said, “The 55 players were grateful that the Germantown Cricket Club hosted the event, as well as the 35s and 45s. We applaud all those involved in making the decision to take on the monumental task of adding these tournaments to their existing schedule, and thank them for the wonderful hospitality they offered.”
