Let the Fun Begin!

Cruise nights have begun! This is a shot of the early season attendees at the Manotick Classic Boat Club’s first Cruise Night of the year at Dave and Dinah Scholfield’s. Ian Wyllie and Dave Tilley enjoyed the ride to the event in John and Susan Richardson’s “Sunny II” seen in the background. Lots of goodies and interesting discussions.

President's Message Summer is upon us! Well folks, finally we are all (hopefully!) in the water, or at least “close”. Spring has certainly been rainy, a detriment if I ever saw one to getting the season started. By the time you read this, even the Saunders will finally have a boat in the water! In fact we will have two: the 4 year preservation of “Full Moon”, a 1937 28 ft Hutchinson Sedan, is finally coming to an end; and during the last two weeks of June we will pick up our new-to-us 1929 38 ft Elco Cruiser, “Queenie”, in Poughkeepsie NY, and cruise her home via the Erie Canal. Oh the joys (panic?) of learning how to control two new boats, both of which are single screw and considerably longer than Raysea. Can't wait! th

I am happy to report that the MCBC boating season started off with a bang with our Annual Shop Tour on April 27 . I would like to thank Carman Keyes for organizing this event and all the shop owners who kindly opened up their doors and put up with our endless questions for the day. As usual, the turn out for this event was high, as all of our guys (in particular) were champing at the bit to get their wood boating “fix”. Our first Cruise Night was held on May 29th at the Schofield's. In spite of a nasty rainy day, to the pleasant surprise of the Schofield's, a “full house” of members showed up, and a few brave souls even came by boat. Well the weather gods were with us, as the sun shone down upon us for the entire evening and great fun was had by all. In the time-honored tradition of great mariners, we swapped stories and lies (Exaggerations? Embellishments? Half-truths?) of our exploits over the winter, both on and off the water. I would like to thank the Schofield's and all the members who will host Cruise Nights. In my opinion these are the probably the most enjoyed activities of our boating year. I would also like to thank Rod Corbett for organizing and manning Dickinson Days held on June 1 in Manotick. It was a beautiful day and according to Rod, all went well, with many people stopping to chat about Rod's boat and our upcoming Boat Show. th

Speaking of boat shows, I am happy to report that your committee has everything in hand to host a great 39 annual Show on th August 10 . As Boat Show Chair, I am happy to report that we filled our two outstanding Chair positions: Rod Corbett stepped up to take on the Site Manager role and Jean Beveridge volunteered to be the Awards Chair. This year's event format will duplicate the success of last year's, with a preshow Friday evening Cruise-in at the Schofield's and an Awards BBQ on Saturday after the judged show, at the Richardson's cottage. This year we are extremely fortunate in that we will have a few new large boats coming to the show. In specific, we expect to have “Allez”, a gorgeous 48 ft Chris Craft cruiser attend plus a 30 ft Hutchinson Sedan named “Algonquin”. In addition, Judy and I intend to motor up the Rideau to attend the show with “Queenie”, our 38 ft Elco. However, without the participation of as many of you members as possible, the Show will not be a success. So, please sign up early to make the lives of our Registration Team and Dock Master easier, and ensure that all of your committee members can sleep without worry! May the Force and Boating Gods be with you…… Ray Saunders, President Manotick Classic Boat Club

SPRING SOCIAL AT THE WYLLIE-DOME Saturday, May 4, 2013 I would like to thank all those MCBC members who organized last Saturday's event at the Wyllie-dome in my honour. I had a great time and it was fun to see the whole gang in such nice weather. It is also terrific to have my family see the great turnout. Please pass on thanks again to all those in the Club for the tree that Ray presented to me on behalf of the club. As many of you know, our family has made a tradition of planting trees for special occasions. Debra and I will find an appropriate home for this special specimen. Again I was overwhelmed with the support last Saturday. I thank you all. It means a lot to both Debra and myself. Ian Wyllie

2013 Boat Shop Tour On April 27 we decided that winter was over and it was time to start thinking about getting our boats ready for the summer. We took advantage of this by touring the local boat shops to see some interesting and often rare boats undergoing repair or restoration, get hints and advice on our own projects from the professionals. Our first stop was at Mike Krzyzanowski's Storage Facility in Portland Mike's collection continues to grow and evolve. His period design outboard shop is very nostalgic and the contents are classic. Loved Mark's newly acquired Century Coronado. Mike, Nelly and Mark as usual provided us with a fascinating stop.

2013 Boat Shop Tour Next, we stopped at Wykes Boats and Repair in Harlem. Owner Ken Wykes and his team specialize in building a range of wood boats from a 17 1/2' guide boat to a 23' runabout. As well Wykes do custom building, repair and restoration of wood boats. Ray and Judy Saunders' Hutchinson was getting some finishing touches. Storage on site contains a variety of interesting boats. Thanks to Ken and his crew for a most interesting visit.

Merrickville was as usual, a good place to stop for lunch as there are many restaurants to choose from. Some of us stopped at the Goose and Gridiron, others tried Harry McLean's Pub, the Yellow Canoe Café and the Main St. Family Restaurant

2013 Boat Shop Tour Our next stop was Aylings Boatyard and Marina in Merrickville. Owners: Steve and Linda Flewitt greeted us and gave us the opportunity to stock up on restoration supplies as Aylings is a well stocked marina where we could find many of the restoration supplies and boating items including CEPS. At Aylings, we found a number of wood cruisers in the yard and there is always activity in the shop. Thanks to Steve and Linda for accommodating us.

Did we say a well stocked marina?

Our Final Stop was at Millar Potter Boat Restoration Ltd in Manotick. Owner Jimmy Potter's shop is well known to MCBC members. At Jimmy's we find a number of boats in the shop and more of interest in the storage area. Always a fascinating stop.

We ordered a nice clear, warm day again this year and while we did get some rain, a good time was had by all. Thanks again to Mike, Nelly & Mark Krzyzanowski, Ken Wykes, Steve and Linda Flewitt and Jimmy Potter, thank you for opening your doors once more for the Manotick Classic Boat Club.

MCBC at Manotick’s Dickinson Days After an absence of a couple of years, MCBC was back with an exhibit in Manotick's Dickinson Days. Rod Corbett managed the MCBC booth this year, displaying his Classic 1960 Chris Craft Sportsman, powered by a 283, 8cyl, 185 hp engine. Rod, a new Board member this year, has also taken on the job of site chairman at the Boat Show. Kudos to Rod and to Donna who backs him all the way.
