2013 TERM DATES

Dear Parents Term 1 2013 Our Demonstration Program for 2013 commenced last Thursday and was a wonderful suc30.1.13 - 12.4.13 cess. This year, the Demonstration Program is based on the rich task ‘Sell that book!’. By Term 2 2013 the end of the five weeks, groups of children will have developed a live book trailer and a 1.5.13 - 28.6.13 Term 3 2013 book display for presentation based on Book Week books. Each group will have the oppor16.7.13 - 20.9.13 tunity to select their preferred method of presentation, thus enriching and extending their Term 4 2013 skills and interests. The rich task is based on the new NSW English syllabus and includes 8.10.13 - 18.12.13 objectives relating to communicating; using language to shape meaning; thinking in ways that are imaginative, creative, interpretive and critical; and learning and reflecting on their learning. We are very fortunate to be associated with the University of Wollongong for this What’s Due program as it allows us to demonstrate and discuss the quality teaching and learning that occurs every day at Mt Keira. Thank you, Mrs Lanyon, Miss Zangari, Mrs Hay and Mr Har- Gymsports program $45 vey for the many hours you have spent planning and preparing our Demonstration Pro- per child overdue gram, the success of which is the result of your dedication, creativity and collegiality. CBCA Literary Luncheon Last Wednesday, a group of ten students accompanied Mrs Hay to a literary luncheon where they had the opportunity to participate in a workshop and converse with many authors, including Frances Watts who sat with the students during the meal. The children were particularly excited when they returned to school as they had managed to collect the autographs of all the authors who attended. Thank you, Mrs Hay for organising this worthwhile event. Please enjoy reading the comments of some of those students who attended:

CBCA Literary Lunch cont. Lachlan Year 6: At the literacy lunch we participated in a workshop hosted by Nathan Luff, listened to fifteen authors speaking about future books, their inspiration and current and past books. Overall, the literacy lunch was very enjoyable and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys literature. Emily Year 5: I loved when the authors did three minute speed dating where they talked about their journey as an author. Lauren Year 4: I enjoyed eating the yummy food and going up to the authors and getting their autograph. Taylor Year 4: I liked how the authors explained their books and brought some things from their book to show everyone.

Local Schools Local Decisions – School Funding In 2014, our school will become fully responsible for making decisions about the allocation of funds received from the DEC. At present, the DEC allocates our funds to certain areas such as learning and support, and utilities, but in 2014 we will receive a bulk amount that we are responsible for allocating. The total amount the school will receive per student is determined by a range of factors including the occupations / professions of parents. To ensure the school receives its correct and optimum financial allocation it is vital that our records are accurate. As the Summit is less busy today, please take the time to complete and return the attached form before August 23 as the information will be garnished from our computer records soon after this date. Our resource / financial allocation depends on the accuracy of the information we receive; please do not limit your child’s resources by not returning your form on time.

Book Week activities As mentioned in a previous Summit, to continue our Book Week activities the children will be visiting the Wollongong City library on Tuesday 20 August. On that morning highly acclaimed local author Di Bates will be working with the children. We have recently purchased a number of Ms Bates’ books to add to our library collection. If children would like to purchase their own copies of any of the books Ms Bates will have them for sale on the day. An order form is included with this newsletter. Please return the order and correct money to the school by Monday 19 August if you wish to make a purchase. When the children return to school from the library Graham Morphett, from Minnamurra Rotary, is coming to speak to the students as part of the book week theme "Read across the Universe". Books that are de-accessioned from our school library are donated to Minnamurra Rotary Club, and are then sent to schools in third world countries which allows students to 'read across our universe'. Graham will be speaking to the students about this program and showing the students pictures of the schools that our old books have gone to,g in particular Papua New Guniea. We are asking for students to donate children’s books, or a gold coin, to the cause. Books may be pre-loved. We hope you can support this worthwhile charity and it may be a good time to clear out some of those books your children have outgrown.

Southern Stars Thank you to Janette who has taken on the organisation of the dressmaking of the costumes and to the wonderful parents, including Mrs Lanyon’s mother, who have offered to assist. Jenny has offered to make the chokers for the Can Can dancers – thank you. A reminder that if you have not brought your finale costume to school to show me, I need to see it before the end of this week to ensure it meets costume guidelines. The ones I have to date are very ‘cool’ – great work! For legal and child protection reasons, parents are reminded that if you wish your child/ren to be collected by another parent, you must inform the school either in writing, verbally to the organising teacher or by text message to the school mobile. Please do not compromise your child’s safety or the organising teacher’s legal obligations.

Reminder- Outdoor Learning Area “Working Bee” We have decided not to dedicate a specific date to a working bee for the Outdoor Learning Area as it really will be a ‘dad’s with toys’ working bee (sorry mums and kids) and, as many dads have commitments on the weekend, it was difficult to select a date. We would be grateful if you could spare some time on a day that suits you (including the weekend) during the rest of the term to assist in preparing the gully for the installation of seating and planting. The gully requires slashing of grass and the removal of low hanging branches, stumps, large sticks and unwanted vegetation. It may also require the preparation of garden beds but this depends on the children’s designs. To help out, you will need to bring along your whipper snipper, saw (bush, chain) and other tools you think you might use. Mr John our General Assistant is here each Thursday (including the holidays) if you need some advice or see Mrs Morton.
