Okeechobee News This Monday, Nov. 12, there will be some new additions to the traditional Veterans Day Celebration. When veterans and those who wish to honor them gather at Veteran’s Park at 10 a.m., bleachers will be available. Veterans who do not have transportation to the ceremony can call Okeechobee County Commissioner Bryant Culpepper at 863-801-4097. He said he will put his interest in history to use and address the nature of the American effort in past wars. Detective Marty Faulkner of the Okeechobee County Sheriff ’s Office, who is a veteran of several tours of duty in Iraq, will also take part in the program. The Okeechobee High School JROTC Honor Guard and Rifle Squad will be participating. New Ground Quartet will sing the National Anthem. The program will be sponsored by American Legion Post 64.

Volleyball tryouts set for Saturday, Nov. 10 Big Lake Juniors, Okeechobee’s very own travel volleyball club, is ready for another exciting season beginning in January 2013. Since its 1998 inception, Big Lake Juniors has established a tradition of developing competitive volleyball players preparing them for the secondary and post-secondary levels. As we begin our 15th season, we are excited to see an influx of young players joining our Big Lake family. Players can participate as early as 6 (six) and can continue through their senior year. Last year we had over 70 participants, fielding seven teams in the following divisions: 10 and under, 11 and under, 12 and under, 13 and under, 14 and under and 18 and under. Participating in Big Lake requires travel on weekends for out-of-town tournaments, and practices two nights a week. Girls who take part in this great club not only learn the basics of volleyball; they also understand what it means to be a team player and make lifelong friends in the process. If you would like to take part in the upcoming Big Lake season, join us for tryouts at Osceola Middle School on Saturday, Nov. 10. To register for tryouts and to find the tryout times and requirements please go to www.biglakejuniors.com. For questions or additional information please email [email protected] or call Beverly at 863-634-9838.

Letters to the editor Don’t miss ‘Wonderettes’ Please don’t miss the great production at the Community Theater, The Marvelous Wonderettes. It is a really fun show with great voices and a sense of nostalgia. You will definitely feel like singing along. It is worth the price of admission just to relive the attitudes, the body language and the innocence which was the ‘50s. Thanks to Ron and Jacque for giving us this totally delightful show. Voting

• For me it the most important election issue was jobs. Practically anything that any of us wants depends on it. The working people, whether they are wealthy or middle income are the ones who provide the money for all services, benefits or any kind of prosperity. Number two is sensible spending on the part of our leaders. No program or benefit

• To everyone who voted, congratulations. Even if your candidate did not win, at least you tried and you participated in the system. To everyone who did not vote, shame on you. If you don’t vote, you have no right to complain about the actions of elected officials. Your chance to hold them accountable is in the voting booth.

AG Continued From Page 1 Creek, LLC had been denied. All three petitions were heard as one, since they were all similar and one attorney represented both property owners. The total amount of property in question is about 236 acres. It was the property appraiser’s position that in order to receive an agriculture exemption for cattle, there must be cattle grazing on the property on Jan. 1 of the year in question. Robert Schwerer, attorney for the property owners, contended that it is the intent to conduct agriculture activities on Jan. 1 that constitutes grounds for an exemption. He claimed that cattle grazing on the properties in question was just an extension of the bone fide cattle operation conducted on other parts of Pine Creek property that had an agriculture exemption. Russ Duncan, agriculture appraiser for Mr. Sherman, stated that on Feb. 6 of this year none of the three properties in question was fenced and none contained livestock. He presented invoices for fencing materials dated in January. Therefore he concluded that on Jan. 1 the property was not being used for a bone fide agriculture purpose. The year before the property was considered vacant land for tax purposes. Ray Luke, who runs cattle on land leased from Pine Creek, said the fences were supposed to be built in November and the January invoices were dated 30 days after the fencing material was bought. He claimed he has made a good faith effort to have cattle on the property by Jan. 1. He asked if he were

a vegetable farmer and in rotating crops, he left one field vacant would he lose his agriculture exemption. Jeff Budz, general manger of Pine Creek, said that in November of last year equipment was rented to clear brush from the properties. He also said they received a load of fence posts before Jan. 1. Loren Levy, attorney for Mr. Sherman, claimed that an agriculture exemption must be based on “actual, physical use of the property.” He claimed that future intent to do something is not a test for agriculture exemption. He stated that the property has to be fenced and cattle actually grazing on it before an agriculture exemption could be granted. Mr. Levy said the Florida Supreme Court has ruled that each petition for agriculture exemption has to be considered on a caseby-case basis. He claimed that each type of agriculture operation must be considered on its own merit and that exemption qualifications for row corps is different. He said that intent is required only with row crops. “That’s not what the law says,” countered Mr. Schwerer. He claimed the law makes no distinction between row crops and cattle grazing. He said that would be giving preference to one particular type of agricultural operation. Mr. Schwerer said that in 2011 over $20,000 had been spent toward getting the property in question ready for grazing. After discussing case law presented by Mr. Schwerer, the board voted in favor of the property owners. The board then adjourned until Dec. 19. At that time they will hear petitions from Florida Gas Transmission and Racetrac Petroleum. dropped .61 seconds from the record set at districts in October. Brahmans end season on road in Clewiston By Charles M. Murphy Okeechobee News Okeechobee hopes to avoid a losing season tonight when they travel to Clewiston to tangle with their long-time rival. Clewiston (4-5) got off to a slow start this year against top opponents, losing their first four games to American Heritage Plantation, Glades Day, King’s Academy and Martin County. Since then, they have responded by winning four out of their last five games against district opponents like Labelle, Lake Placid, Booker and Avon Park. While the Tigers still like to run the football behind the strong and fast Virthavious Robinson, 1,086 yards, and eight touchdowns, they are also capable of passing the ball, led by quarterback Tyler Clemmons, 722 yards passing and six touchdowns.

Other players to watch include Derry West, DeMarcus Terry, John Gonzales, and Cedric Brown. Clewiston has also qualified for the playoffs this year and will play Cocoa next Friday on the road. Share your news and photos Okeechobee (4-5) for this column by email to [email protected] will get a boost from the return of LaVante Spivey, who was sorely missed in the game last week against Olympic Heights. turnovers. They had four against Olympic Heights. He also wants better results on special teams. Branham said Clewiston has switched their defense this year and have a wellrounded offensive team. He also praised their offensive tackles, who control things at the line of scrimmage. “I’ve told the team this is a rivalry game and you have to execute and control the line of scrimmage. If we do that we can win the game.” He compared this game to the Bears Packers, Yankees versus Red Sox, Alabama Auburn and other well known rivalries. D.J. Washington has an outside shot at

Okeechobee Sports News in Brief By Charles M. Murphy Okeechobee News • The Okeechobee High School Brahmans boys basketball team will hold their Purple and White game at the OHS Gymnasium this Saturday night at 5 p.m. Admission is $1. Be sure to come out and support the Brahman team this year. • Alex Estremera of the Brahman baseball team gave a verbal commitment to attend Indian River State College to play baseball next year. • Former Brahman wrestler Donny Bush ran his amateur record to (6-1) as he competed in a mixed martial arts fight in Panama City, Panama on Oct. 19, at the Veneto Wyndham Grand Hotel and Casino. Bush defeated Kevin Blackman of Panama by decision as he won two of the three rounds. He competed in the 145-pound weight division. Bush will be part of an MMA card at the Highlands County Fairgrounds this Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $20 apiece. Bush thanked his sponsors Emerson and Jeanna Billie, Mike and Patricia Gore, and his father Scott and grandmother Shirley Bush for their support. • Tabatha Henry and Hernan Baltazar will represent the Okeechobee Cross Country teams on Saturday at the Region 4-3A meet at South Fork High School. Henry has high hopes of reaching the state finals this year. She was third at the district meet. Hernan finished in the top 12 at districts and also

hopes to improve his performance Saturday morning. Thirteen schools will be represented in the girls cross country regional final and 15 boys teams will be represented. • The Lady Brahman basketball team lost in their preseason opener to state ranked Bartow, 81-37 at the Highlands County tournament in Sebring. Ami Edwards had 12 points and 14 rebounds. Carley McCoin had 15 points and eight steals. Taylor Trent added points for Okeechobee. Bartow had four players in double figures. Coach Erin Morrow said Bartow is serious about basketball and works hard all year long. Five of their players have been offered college scholarships, “They were big quick and athletic. It was a good preseason game to show us what we can improve upon.” Morrow said the guards will have to step up and do a better job of getting the ball down the court. She will also emphasize communication on the court and rebounding on the defensive end of the court. • The Brahmans boys soccer team rolled over Lincoln Park Academy 5-0 in their season opener Tuesday. Wilson Barahona had two goals and Sergio Vargas, Brian Guerrero, and Hunter Pritchard scored one goal apiece. Barahona and Guerrero added one assist. • The Lady Brahman soccer team lost to powerful Treasure Coast 8-0 by the mercy rule late in the second half on Tuesday. Treasure Coast is (2-0-1).

He said the team would be motivated by the opportunity to avoid a losing record. “This is our last game so this is our playoff game. I’m glad I had this one shot with this group of seniors. I’ve got a lot out of them. We have had a lot of great individual performances and I feel the defense has been pretty tough to score on this year. There have been a lot of positives and a lot to be proud of,” he added.

killing the cancers without damaging surrounding normal tissues. It is as simple as going out to get a chest x-ray! Cyberknife Robotic Radio surgery system, created at Stanford University over 10 years ago is unique and better than other systems in the fact that it is the only Radio surgery system that can achieve what is called “real-time tracking and killing of tumor.” What kind of patients can be helped by Cyberknife? There are several situations too numerous to mention here where Cyberknife would be extremely useful and safe. The following are just a few of them: Patients with Trigeminal Neuralgia, pituitary tumors and tumors of the acoustic nerve called Acoustic Neuroma can avoid major surgical procedures on the brain by getting treated with Cyberknife. Patients with cancers of the brain, spine, lung and prostate are but a few of the cancers that can be helped with one to five sessions of Radio Surgery. An article published in the Journal of the American Medical Association in 2010 showed that patients with patients with lung cancer who received Radiosurgery had a survival rate of 55.8% at 3 years versus 20 to 35% for those patients treated with traditional radiation over several weeks. As one of our patients commented, if it is good for patients at Stanford University, it is good for patients from the Okeechobee area! If you or someone you know has any

MOORE HAVEN—The new IGA Harvest Hometown Market is open at last. Since the old U-Save in Moore Haven closed in October 2011, Moore Haven residents have had no choice but to drive 16 miles or more each way to the closest supermarket. This has placed a real hardship on those who do not have transportation. Earlier this year, Joe Sweet, who owns Harvest House Grocery on U.S. 441 S.E. in Okeechobee, decided to invest in Moore Haven. “We could have gone anywhere around the lake,” said Mr. Sweet. “There were a lot of stores available. But the need was here. “We want an opportunity to grow, to be a service to the public, to make a difference in the community,” he said, “We would like to see the community grow. We would like to be a part of that.” Mr. Sweet and his wife, Lisa, have made a big investment in the store. Just cleaning the place up cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. The store employs 32 people. Mr. Sweet said he was overwhelmed by the response to their first “help wanted” ad. In an 8-hour period, over 200 people applied to work.

“We interviewed them all,” he said. “We wanted to give everybody an opportunity.” He said some people who applied drove over from Clewiston and Okeechobee. “There are just not enough jobs to go around,” he said. Work on the building started in July. The clean up was a big job. They had to tear down some of the walls and chip out and replace some of the floors. They did a lot of scraping, bleaching and disinfecting before they could even think about painting. Those who have visited the building in recent weeks frequently commented: “It smells clean in here.” The spacious store now offers fresh produce, meat, dairy foods and a wide variety of canned and boxed goods. Mr. Sweet said they tried to consider the population when allocating space for various products. For example, the store’s spice aisle has 1,500 different seasonings. “This is more of a cooking community,” said Mr. Sweet. “If they want to make something, I want them to find all of the ingredients here.” The store carries IGA brands as well as other popular brands. For example, in the ice cream department

customers can choose from IGA ice cream, Blue Bunny or Breyers. He said they will probably make some changes after the store opens if there is customer demand for something they didn’t initially offer. “We picked as much variety as possible,” he said. Mr. Sweet is proudest of the section of the store he calls his “dollar department.” The dollar department has more than 1,000 items for $1 each. The wide range of products for $1 includes items such as toothpaste, shampoo, plastic goods, trash bags, canned chili, seasonings, jelly, cereal, batteries and instant coffee. “This is not something you usually see in a supermarket, but I think there is a need for it in this community,” he explained. IGA stands for the Independent Grocers Alliance. IGA was founded in 1926, bringing together independent grocers across the United States to ensure that the trusted, familyowned local grocery store remained strong in the face of growing chain competition. The IGA motto is “Hometown Proud.” For more information online, go to www.iga.com.

Corps waives fees on Veterans Day By Jonathan Porat (c)2011 Tribune Media Services, Inc.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) will waive day-use fees for veterans, active and reserve component service members, and their families at the more than 2,400 Corps-operated recreation areas nationwide on Veterans Day, Nov. 11. “We honor our veterans, active and reserve service members, and their families this Veterans Day with an invitation to launch a boat or swim at one of our beaches free of charge, said Maj. Gen. Michael J. Walsh, USACE Deputy Commanding General for Civil Works and Emergency Operations. The day-use fee waiver requires only verbal confirmation of ser-

vice. This waiver covers fees for boat launch ramps and swimming beaches. The waiver does not apply to camping and camping-related services, or fees for specialized facilities such as group picnic shelters. USACE does not charge an entrance fee to access its parks. Other agencies that manage recreation areas on USACE lands are encouraged, but not required, to offer the Veterans Day waiver of fees in the areas that they manage. “We first began the Veterans Day fee waiver in 2006 as a way to honor the men and women who have served our nation and the armed forces, and to encourage them and

Give thanks for hunting opportunities By Tony Young

FWC November means the 2012-13 huntin’ season is in full swing. In this month’s column, I cover almost everything you need to know about general gun, fall turkey, quail, snipe and the second phase of mourning and white-winged dove season. The first thing you need to do is pick up a $17 Florida resident hunting license. Nonresidents pay $46.50 for a 10-day license or $151.50 for 12 months. If you plan to hunt one of Florida’s many wildlife management areas (WMAs), you’ll also need a $26.50 management area permit, but don’t forget to study the brochure for the specific area you plan to hunt, because dates, bag limits and rules differ greatly from area to area. You can get these brochures at tax collectors’ offices in close proximity to the WMA, or you can download them from MyFWC.com/Hunting. You can buy your license and per-

mits by calling 888-HUNT-FLORIDA or going online at License.MyFWC. com. Have your credit card ready. You also can purchase them from tax collectors’ offices and most retail outlets that sell hunting and fishing supplies. The general gun season runs Nov. 3–Jan. 20 in Zone C; Dec. 1–Feb. 17 in Zone B; and in Zone A, the second phase of general gun season runs Nov. 17–Jan. 6. In Zone D, it starts Thanksgiving Day (Nov. 22) and lasts four days until Nov. 25. Two weeks later, the season reopens Dec. 8 and runs through Feb. 17. Hunters can take bucks having at least one antler 5 inches or longer, but anyone hunting deer in Florida must have the $5 deer permit. On private lands, hunters can take wild hogs year-round with no bag or size limits. On most – but not all – WMAs, there’s also no bag or size limit on wild hogs, and hunters can take them during any hunting season except spring turkey. Check the WMA brochure to be certain.

Shooting sports: On target for fun for the whole family

F

rom youngsters in 4-H and FFA shooting clubs to retirees, shooting sports are gaining in popularity in the United States. The fastest growing groups of shooters? Women and retirees. A recent study by the National Shooting Sports Foundation, found that more than 4 million women participate in target shooting in the United States. Also growing in popularity are Outdoor Women and women’s self-defense programs that involve learning to use a gun. This comes as no surprise to Jeff Wait and Jason Flesch at Okeechobee Shooting Sports, 7055 N.E. 48th Street in Okeechobee. “More women are shooting,” Jeff explained, adding that their women’s selfdefense class is one of their most popular offerings. Because some women feel intimidated in a class with men, Okeechobee Shooting Sports offers separate classes for women. The class includes learning to shoot through a purse—instead of wasting precious seconds to remove the gun from the handbag. Women who start with a self-defense class often find they enjoy target shooting as a hobby. While in the past, shooting was a male-dominated sport, many wives now join their husbands for a day at the range, he explained. “They’re learning to shoot with a purpose,” Jeff continued. “Some women start out in class timid and reserved and as they master the skills, that changes. Their confidence level goes from zero to 100.” Retiring “baby boomers” is another demographic showing increasing interest in shooting sports. Some come out just to try it—something to check off a

“bucket list”—and find out they enjoy shooting. Many of these retirees are getting much more involved in the shooting sports and even competing in matches. Others who have owned guns most of their adult lives now have more time to devote to the shooting sports and enjoy trying new types of shooting. For those new to a community, a shooting range can be a place to make new friends with others who share their interests. Okeechobee Shooting Sports is handicapped-accessible so even those in wheelchairs can enjoy the various shooting sports. The gunsmith shop can modify weapons to accommodate special needs. Also growing in interest is IDPA (International Defensive Pistol Association) competitions. “IDPA is a growing competition for concealed carry permit holders,” said Jason. While IDPA is traditionally a club sport with competitions sponsored by various clubs, Okeechobee Shooting Sports offers IDPA competitions supervised by the range staff. “We’ve made changes to the way we operate to accommodate more people,” he explained. Instead of an IDPA meet taking most of the day, 30 people can compete in two hours. That means they have time to take advantage of other shooting opportunities while they are at the range. In addition to standard rifle and pistol ranges, Okeechobee Shooting Sports offers five stand, trap and skeet, shooting galleries and 3D archery. They host Registered NSSA (National Skeet Shooting Association) and ATA (Amateur Trapshooters Association) shoots. They have seen growing interest in the long-shooting area; the facility offers a 500-yard shooting experience three times a month, usually completely booked in advance. One day a month, the shoot allows use of a 50 caliber rifles. The range also offers customers the chance to bring or rent automatic and large caliber guns. They even have some of these types of guns to rent, including a Barrett 50 cal rifle. “People will say they only want to try it,” said Jeff. “But it’s like going to an amusement park. They come back and want to do it again.” And then there’s the zombie shoot. Every six weeks or so, starting at dusk, under the direction of range officers, shooters navigate a course featuring bleeding zombie targets. The zombie shoots are booked in advance. Popularity of shooting sports growing in lake area The Okeechobee County area is home to a variety of shooting sports venues both for target shooting and hunting.

OK Corral Gun Club The OK Corral Gun Club, 9449 N.E. 48th Street in Okeechobee, is located on a 300-acre parcel of land ideally suited for the Florida sportsman and offers a variety of shooting options including sporting clays, pistol range, rifle range, 3D archery, SASS Cowboy action and gun handling classes. For those who wish to stay a little longer, RV and tent camp sites are available. The facility, which has an Old West atmosphere, has a western street with facades of a cantina, church, grain and feed store, jail, hotel, Wells Fargo station, Tombstone hotel and train depot. Details such as a stage coach add realism to the scenario. Even the public restrooms are disguised, hidden inside a stage stop and a blacksmith shop. Cowboy Action Shooting requires competitors to use firearms typical of the mid-to-late 19th century: single action revolvers, lever action rifles chambered in pistol calibers, side-by-side double barrel shotguns (also referred to as a Coach Gun) or 1897-style pumpaction shotguns. Both original and reproduction guns are equally acceptable. Single Action Shooting Society (SASS) competitors are required to wear an Old West costume of some sort, and safety glasses must be worn while shooting. Competition involves a number of separate shooting scenarios known as “stages.” Stages are always different, each typically requiring ten revolver rounds (shooters generally carry two single-action revolvers), nine or ten rifle rounds, and two to eight shotgun rounds. Targets typically are steel plates that ring/clang/ ding when hit. The OK Corral Gun Club is proud to offer ten unique stages for Cowboy Action competitions. A spacious clubhouse with a central stone fireplace also has a western flair. The club house is available for rental for private parties and club events, with catered meals available. An outdoor grilling area may be used with permission from staff. The OK Corral Gun Club is proud to be the official home of the Okeechobee Marshals Cowboy Action Shooting Club and a member of the National Sporting Clays Association (NSCA). Call 863-3572226 or email info@okcorralgunclub. com for membership information, showup-and-shoot times, private event reservations, or to schedule a visit. Club hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., open 7 days a week to members and the public.
