HOMEWORK

• • • •

Homework assignments will be posted on the web site listed above. You are welcome to work together, but you have to turn in your own work. Handwritten homework has to be scanned in and submitted as a single .pdf file via Catalyst following the link on the website. If you don’t have a scanner, you can use scanners available on the 2nd floor of Odegaard Library for free. 1

View all pages of your pdf before submitting it and verify that (1) it is a .pdf and not a .jpg or other format, (2) all pages are right side up, (3) all writing is dark enough to read, (4) you have made only one file containing many pages rather than many files of one page each, and (5) all writing falls within the area of the page that can be scanned. The grader will grade the single, last file that you upload before the deadline. You are welcome to upload new versions until the dropbox closes. The grader will check to make sure that you have made an attempt to solve every problem in a thoughtful and methodical fashion and your work is legible and neat. Based on this you will get your score. Each stage of each homework is worth 5 points although the number of questions may vary. I will have an A and B homework set each week (of course we will omit some for exams and holidays). Each homework will be done in two stages. You will have 3-4 days to do a rough draft, in which you make an attempt to do each problem. Then you will have a few days to look at my answer key and do a final, neat clean homework. Wednesday: The A set rough draft homework is due; the B set final draft homework is due. I will post the A set answer key and the new B homework set. Sunday: The A set final homework is due, and the first draft homework of the B set is due. I will post the B set answer key and the new A set homework. If this gets too complicated we can group the homework to have one set a week. So your feedback is important. Your lowest two homework scores will be dropped. Motivation: The only way to know whether you actually understand the material is to do homework. I know of no other way to test myself. Moreover, I use the homework to construct the exams. A good faith effort on all of the homework should have you well on your way to being ready for the exams.

Please check your homework with the answer key and make sure that you understand all the problems. GRADING FOR THE COURSE Homework sets (~150 points total): 25% of the grade Midterm 1 (100 points): 20% of the grade Midterm 2 (100 points): 20% of the grade Final (200 points): 35% of the grade OPTIONAL TUTORIAL SESSIONS • Either the TA or the instructor will be present during the optional tutorial session as listed earlier. • You may use these times to get started on the homework problems and raise questions about the course material. DISABILITY Please contact Disabled Student Services, 448 Schmitz, 543-8924 (V/TTY). If you have a letter from Disabled Student Services, please show me the letter so we can discuss the appropriate accommodations you may need for the class.
