ANCYL member can "shoot people for disrespect" The national ANC Youth League treasurer, Pule Mabe, is in hot water for allegedly assaulting his former high school mate at a tavern in Namakgale on Friday. It is alleged that Mabe, originally from Namakgale, assaulted Tshepo Nakana at Oddo's tavern for calling him a name he did not approve of. Nakana told the Herald that Mabe entered the tavern with men who appeared to be his bodyguards. He said that he called him a name they used to call him at Lepato High School, but that didn't go down well with Mabe. According to Nakana, he called Mabe "Mokolekwa". "He told me that he did not approve of the name and I apologised. Despite my apologies, Mabe started assaulting me, hitting me with his open hand more than six times in full view of other patrons and his bodyguards", said Nakana. Nakana alleges that Mabe claimed he (Nakana) was sent by President Jacob Zuma's camp to provoke him. However, Mabe allegedly told Nakana that he had to assault him otherwise his bodyguards were going to do it on his behalf. "He also told me that he could shoot me right there because of my disrespect". Nakana alleges that Mabe bought him six ciders as a way of apologising. Nakana opened a case of intimidation and common assault on Sunday. Namakgale Police Spokesperson, Constable Lucy Sekgotodi, confirmed that a case had been opened. Mabe could not be reached for a comment at the time of going to print.

The pit toilet in which a 17 year-old girl allegedly threw her newly born baby boy on Thursday morning at Burgersdorp village.

Teenager dumps newborn in pit toilet A 17 year-old girl appeared in the Ritavi Magistrate’s Court on Friday on a charge of concealment of birth. It is alleged that the girl from Burgersdorp village gave birth to a baby boy on Thursday morning at around 05:00, and then threw him into a pit toilet.

The matter came to light when the suspect’s mother noticed her struggling to walk. After being questioned by her mother, she admitted to giving birth to a baby boy and dumping him in the pit toilet. The lifeless body of the unfortunate baby has since been recovered.

The girl was rushed to the hospital for medical treatment and later taken into police custody. Following her appearance in court, the suspect was released into parental custody pending further investigations into the matter. Provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi, says the dumping and

abandoning of newly born babies is strongly condemned. The Deputy Provincial Police Commissioner responsible for policing, Major General Benny Ntlemeza, advises girls and women who don’t want babies to seek assistance from the Department of Health Social Development or other relevant authorities.

Police investigate ritual killing A man was murdered and his genitals chopped off allegedly for ritual purposes over the weekend in Namakgale. The body of Pieter Matsane was discovered at his house in a pool of blood by his neighbours on Sunday. Namakgale Police Spokesperson, Constable Lucy Sekgotodi, said Matsane's neighbours got worried about his whereabouts as they had not seen him since Friday. Sekgotodi said the neighbours decided to check on Matsane, but were welcomed by flies and a dreadful smell instead. His body was covered in blankets and his genitals were cut off, however - the police did not find any object suspected to have been used on Matsane. It is alleged that the perpetrators could have gained access to Matsane's house quite easily - because his house doesn't have doors or electricity. Matsane was residing alone at the time of this incident. His younger brother, Centy Matsane, said the death has left the family traumatised because they had just buried their mother last month. "I last saw Pieter last week when we were cleaning my late mother's house and we were a happy family. Man dies in shack fire

A man was burnt beyond recognition when the shack he was sleeping in caught fire last Monday night at Motupa village in Bolobedu South. Memorial service for accident victims The MEC for Education, Dikcson Masemola has urged school learners to produce good results in honour of their fellow learners who lost their lives in a road accident a week ago. Masemola was speaking at Tivumbeni Multi Purpose Centre on Thursday during a memorial service for six learners who died in a horrific accident on the R36 road outside Tzaneen a week ago. He encouraged the learners to do their best in the end of the year examination, in order to honour their fellow learners who had passed on at such an untimely point in their lives.

A member of one of the bereaved families who spoke on their behalf, Mike Sambo, said they were deeply traumatised by the tragic death of their children. Sambo described the five boys who died as inseparable friends. He expressed appreciation for the enormous support the families received from different stakeholders in the community. The deceased learners from Meridian, St. George's College, Merensky High and DZJ Mthebule, are: Toinette Smith, Fortune Machimane, Hanyani Mhinga, Tshepo Moyani ,Ryan Rikhotso and Nsuku Ndlovu.

Mine loses millions due to strike The Village Reef operation at the Consolidated Murchison mine claims it has lost R15 million due to the go-slow by its workers last month. Workers affiliated to the National Union of Mineworkers were allegedly involved in an unprotected strike last month, apparently to force management to pay each employee R40 000 of overtime. General Manager, Lebo Marumole, said the go-slow has cost the company immensely and

as a result, they have appointed a contractor to keep production going. "We have appointed a contractor to get some production going. This will, of course, be a temporary arrangement", said Marumole. The workers were expected to produce 28 000 tons of antimony a month which, according to the company's calculations, was 50% lower in July than the agreed target.

Pay for services or face being cut off Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality has intensified its programme of cutting off municipal service to those who do not pay their bills. Acting Municipal Manager, Dr Stimela Sebashe, said "we are going to disconnect anyone, including businesses, that do not pay for municipal services". Sebashe said the programme was rolled out on Monday. "We have already dispatched a team which will go around in all areas including Namakgale and Lulekani. We have sent letters to all residents informing them about the disconnection of services if payments are not made", said Sebashe. Sebashe said the municipality has a legal responsibility and obligation to collect all the

money due to it. Mayor Anna Sono, recently said the municipality coffers have run dry as a result of non-payment. Sono was speaking at a mayoral imbizo in Namakgale, where she gave her progress report on matters since she took the office. In Namakgale and Lulekani, residents owing over R50 000 to the municipality are still receiving municipal services completely free. This has angered many residents in town who have had their services cut off in the blink of an eye if they don't pay in time. However, Sebashe said that all this was going to change.

A disabled woman's life has been made easier by a prominent local businessman, Makapane Modipa. The owner and Chief Executive Officer of MacP Construction, Modipa presented Motlatso Mamorobela with an electric, motorized wheelchair worth R48 000 in an emotionally charged ceremony at Kgapane Community Hall on Wednesday. Modipa said he was touched by the plight of the disabled woman, who did not have a proper wheelchair but managed to attend every community event in the district. "After I saw her at Kgapane Stadium in May in her ordinary wheelchair, which was no longer in good working condition, I decided to donate a wheelchair which will be easy to operate,' said a visibly emotional Modipa. Modipa said earlier this year his company donated R750 000 to Kgwekgwe High School in Bolobedu South for the building of a library and a computer centre. He expressed disappointment in the lack of interest in engineering courses by students in the district. He said since his company started offering bursaries in 2008 for learners who wish to study engineering courses at tertiary institutions, only two students have applied and have been assisted. He appealed to learners who are interested in studying Civil Engineering, Land Surveying and other civil construction related courses in tertiary institutions next year, to approach the Tzaneen based MacP Construction for bursaries. The Mayor of Greater Letaba Municipality, City Modjadji, thanked Modipa for his company's generous donation to a disabled woman. He described the beneficiary as someone who is committed to community development despite her disability and challenged other businesspeople to follow suit, and help the government deliver a better life for all. "The government alone cannot win the fight against poverty and under development without the involvement of the private sector," said Modjadji. Mamorobela, who was struggling to hold back tears of joy throughout the event, did not have enough words to thank Modipa for his generosity. She said the electric wheelchair came at just the right time, as it was becoming a struggle for her to push the old wheelchair. "My life will now be easy with this electric wheelchair. I won't need someone to push me whenever I wanted to go somewhere. I will operate it myself without needing the assistance of anyone," said Mamorobela.

Blind pensioner gets a house It was all joy when the family of a blind pensioner was given a newly built house and lots of groceries at Mphagani village in Giyani on Friday. A three-roomed modern house, built at a cost of R32 000 by Nandzu Trading and General Projects which also donated R1500 worth of groceries, was officially handed over

to Mphephu Baloyi's family by the Executive Mayor of Mopani District Municipality, Joshua Matlou. Baloyi lived in a cracked two-roomed house with seven other family-members, including grandchildren. No one in the family is working and they depend on social grants to survive. Matlou

said the plight of the family came to light during the ANC's 2011 local government election campaign. Khathutshelo Madima of Nandzu Trading and General Projects, said the company built the house for the poor family to help government address the critical service delivery backlog. "It was also a way of giving back to

the community for supporting us," said Madima. The executive mayor, councilors and municipal officials were in Mphagani village to interact with community-members about service delivery. Matlou took the opportunity to highlight government's programmes on infrastructure development, education and health.

Census field

worker campaign The Census 2011 fieldworkers who completed a nine-day training at Bulamahlo and Relela Thusong Service Centres in the Greater Tzaneen on Monday have now embarked on the ‘Know-your fieldworker Campaign’. The campaign is meant to alleviate fears that criminals may use the census as a way of breaking into people's homes." "The campaign is in response to security concerns, when the call was made for everyone to open their doors for census staff," said Statistician-General, Pali Lehohla. Lehohla said the Know-your-fieldworker Campaign introduces the fieldworkers to the community where they will be working. "This is done by means of posters that will be put up within the enumeration area between October 3 and 8." The posters will have a photo of the fieldworker, their name, their cellphone number and a toll-free number for the call centre if residents are not sure who is at their doorstep," said Lehohla. Signet Manganyi is amongst the trainees, and is looking forward to his new job. He passed Grade 12 three years ago and had always dreamed of furthering his studies at university, but has never had enough money to so. Manganyi says with the money he will earn from the census he will be able to register. "The money will not be enough to cover all my immediate needs, but I hope I will be able to register at a university and hopefully get aid through student financial assistance programmes," he said. Statistics South Africa is also partnering with the Department of Basic Education in the learner ambassador programme. Through this programme, they expect pupils to spread the word about the census and encourage families to participate.
