Fall Career Fair 2012 Employer Survey Rationale: To gain feedback from employers regarding their interactions with students during the Fall Career Fair to determine if there are any areas of improvement.

Survey Distribution: After the Fall Career Fair, every employer that attended the fair was emailed a survey asking for feedback regarding the event and their interactions with students.

Results: The survey indicated that students need the most improvement in researching the company before going to the career fair and on using self-promotion skills when speaking with employers. **To make our survey results more visually appealing, the Career Center created several infographics to display this information. Career Consultants often incorporate these graphics into presentations and other correspondence in order to capture the attention of students in a new way. You will see examples of these throughout the Terry Report.

I went to the Career Center early on in the year to get a good idea about how the process would work and what skills I needed to develop. At my very first meeting I had my resume completely revamped. By the second meeting, my Career Consultant had assisted me through various resources such as interview study materials and networking opportunities. I was even able to practice for the interview process with a series of mock interviews. At the conclusion of my internship, I was extended a full time job offer to start with the same group after graduation. I am so thankful to my Career Consultant and the entire UGA Career Center for helping me through the process and providing me with the much needed resources for acquiring my job.

STUDENT SUCCESS STORY: MICHAEL SCRUGGS Terry College of Business: May 2012 Intern at Accenture My consultant helped me to not only format a great resume, but to offer some perspective into what certain companies look for as well. Once I was satisfied with my resume, I scheduled more appointments to work on my interviewing skills. This proved to be invaluable experience because it prompted me to start trying to anticipate what employers would be asking me. Because I had a general idea of the questions they were going to ask, I was able to think through my answers so I was not just making them up on the fly. I credit my success of landing a summer internship to the help I received from the Career Center. It proved to be an invaluable resource for advancing my career, and I encourage undergraduate and graduate students to take full advantage of all the opportunities it offers.

STUDENT SUCCESS STORY: JOHN WENZELL Terry College of Business: May 2012 Business Intelligence Analyst Intern at KPMG On DAWGlink, I found a posting for a position with KPMG as a Business Intelligence Analyst Intern. After two interviews, I received a call from the recruiter offering me the internship. I was speechless over the phone, but was able to mutter my acceptance. During the internship, I flew from Atlanta to Chicago each week to work in the Business Intelligence Project Management Office. I helped prepare proposals to win projects, researched emerging technologies, wrote reports on the future trends of the industry, and networked with the national leaders of the practice. On the final day of my internship, I was offered a full-time position upon my graduation the following year. I gladly accepted the offer and I look forward to my new job and the experience that I will gain with KPMG. The UGA Career Center helped me figure out what I wanted and helped me prepare to achieve my goals.

Student Feedback: Terry Career Boot Camp Mock Interviews: “I received a lot of great feedback that I feel could vastly improve my interview skills.”

“This is a great program! I was really nervous going in, especially after not getting an internship I had applied for. The recruiter gave me a great feedback and gave me the confidence and courage to keep going. Thanks Terry!!”

“It was very helpful because the mock interviewers give real life situation advices and great interview tips.”

“This was an outstanding experience. My interviewer gave me constructive feedback while highlighting my strengths and weaknesses. This was a very beneficial practice interview and I would definitely encourage other students to do this.”

“If we can be given the information about the company and the position before the interview, it would better. We can do research on the company, and the employer may ask some relevant questions. This will make the mock interview closer to the formal interview.”

“Program was excellent! Interviewers were willing to listen, help, and teach interviewees. I learned a lot from this experience and I would definitely recommend anyone to come when this program occurs again.”

STUDENT SUCCESS STORY: MICHAEL SIMIC Terry College of Business: December 2012 Pharmaceutical Sales Intern at Eli Lilly and Company During my fourth year, I attended the Career Fair at the Classic Center, where I had an opportunity to meet and network with multiple companies, many within the industry I hoped to work in. I began speaking with Eli Lilly and Company and was asked to come back for the first round of interviews. In order to prepare, I went to the Career Center to have my resume critiqued and did multiple mock interviews. By the time of my first interview, I felt more prepared than I had ever imagined. I advanced onto the second round, and spent more time at the Career Center doing mock interviews. I ended up receiving the internship, and I credit the help and encouragement of the Career Center staff for preparing me.

The Business Professionalism Certificate To help encourage attendance at Terry Career Boot Camp programs, the Terry Career Consultants implemented a new Business Professionalism Certificate beginning in Fall 2012. The certificate program encourages students to attend multiple workshops over the course of a semester (for example, five programs were required in Spring 2013) in order to receive recognition. The Business Professionalism Certificate capitalizes on existing programs and motivates students to become more engaged in their career development. As part of the certificate requirement, students are also asked to complete an assessment about their overall experience attending the Career Center’s programs. This feedback is incorporated into future planning efforts and also provides career consultants with ideas for new programming.

Student Feedback: “Without a doubt I would recommend other students to attend the Terry Career Boot Camp seminars. These seminars are invaluable in progressing students toward attaining their ‘dream job’ or setting them up for success after graduation. Learning how to perfect your resume, kick-off your job search, communicate effectively with potential employers, the ins and outs of LinkedIn, and so on, are extremely useful when going in to the ‘real world.’ I feel like a large percentage of students could learn a great amount by attending these seminars. No matter what career path a student takes, the resources and lessons that are touched upon within these Terry Career Boot Camp seminars are applicable and essential.”
