The Association between Magnesium Status and the Metabolic Syndrome among Apparently Healthy Women in Kuwait Alkazemi, D., Alsouri, N. Abstract The Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a cluster of cardiovascular risk factors which may include elevated fasting plasma glucose, abdominal obesity, dyslipidemia marked by decreased high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and increased low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and high blood pressure. Several researchers suggested that magnesium and fiber deficiency affect the cluster of MetS. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between dietary intake of magnesium and fiber and the prevalence of MetS using ATP III criteria. This study was a cross-sectional study that involved 170 apparently healthy adult women aged 18 – 65 years old. Dietary intake and biochemical profile information were gathered from participants in AL-Adan hospital (55.88%), Mubarak hospital (32.35%) and Riqqa polyclinic (11.76%). Ethical approval was obtained from Ministry of Health. The crude prevalence of MetS among participants was 17.6%, while the age adjusted prevalence was 23.3%. Inverse associations between dietary intake of magnesium and fiber and prevalence of MetS was found. The mean intake of magnesium was highly correlated with serum magnesium (r= 0.916). In logistic regression model after adjustment for age, BMI and menstrual cycle, magnesium and fiber intake were inversely associated with MetS (OR: 0.993; P < .001) and (OR: 0.927; P < .001), respectively. Higher intake of magnesium and fiber were associated with lowered risk of MetS among apparently healthy women in Kuwait.
