There may be rare occasions where due to unforeseen or unavoidable circumstances it becomes necessary to make significant changes to a course or to withdraw it or part of it, (e.g. a particular unit/module). Such action could become necessary if for example the following were to occur: • a key member of staff leaves the University and we are unable to find a suitable replacement (e.g. with the requisite academic knowledge/experience); • a professional body or Regulator/accreditor requires changes to be made to a course or withdraws their accreditation of a course; • changes have to be made to reflect legislative changes/requirements; • changes have to be made to reflect changes in standards set down by relevant regulators and/or in keeping with best practice or developments related to the particular discipline/subject area; • student feedback clearly indicates that immediate changes be made to a course or unit; or • unexpected low recruitment to a course or unit/module means it is simply no longer viable or practical to run it. Welcome to the Bath Advantage We deliver forward-looking, practice relevant education to provide the best possible student experience. To equip students with the best possible opportunities, our academics conduct world-class research on an on-going basis. We engage business and society to influence the present and shape the future through our scholarship. Our students hear their ideas first, before anyone else, and our faculty are also always keen to discuss their latest ideas with students. The opportunity to question current thinking is positively encouraged; we want debate and critique as that is the cornerstone of a good education. It’s this partnership between student and academic that accounts for why we are so highly ranked for both student satisfaction and for student employability at the end of a student’s time with us. Beyond the lecture theatre, there is a great quality of life enjoyed by our students and staff. We offer a compact, safe but vibrant university campus with a welcoming and friendly atmosphere. Beyond the campus, Bath as a city is simply a very beautiful place in which to study and live. People who come here to research, learn or teach will tell you that they thrive in this environment. Whilst our students may live in a world heritage city, they are equipped with an educational experience reflecting the needs of the 21st century. We are very international in our outlook, we recruit both students and faculty from around the globe, and aim to reflect the globalisation of markets and recognise the importance of being connected with a strong emphasis on the value of an extensive international alumni network. And in all of this, we are mindful of the ethical, social and environmental aspects of everything we do as a university. We want our students to have a happy and enriching study experience with us, to leave here capable of making a significant contribution to the wealth and well-being of the societies in which they will work, and to be motivated and committed to become responsible citizens within these societies. And that’s what we call the Bath Advantage.

BSc Management Suite (BMan, BIM, BMM)

Length

4 years (First year and final year at university – middle two years split between study and professional experience)

3 or 4 years (Two years of academic study before going on placement in Year three. Or three consecutive years of academic study on the 3 year BSc Management course.)

Placements

Incorporates two six-month work placements. This variety gives you the chance to try out two different sectors and/or organisations. The first placement takes place at the start of Year two.

Incorporates one, year-long placement in Year three (on the 4 year courses only). Being year-long, it means you can really get to know an organisation/management area and potentially get involved with a substantial project for the placement provider.

Subject flexibility

Highly flexible subject choice after the first year where you can tailor the degree to suit your own interests through your module selections.

Each has a subject core (strategy & entrepreneurship/ international issues/marketing) but all offer a degree of optional modules from Year two onwards.

Study abroad

The BBA offers you the opportunity to study at one of our partner schools in Year four.

This opportunity is only available on the BSc in International Management, as part of Year three.

Student profile

High energy, competitive, ready to give things a go. You need to be self-confident and mature from the outset as you interview with companies in the first year, and go on placement at the start of your second year.

Contemplative and considered. You learn as much about yourself and your working preferences as you do about your subjects in the two years of academic study before you go on placement in Year three.

Placements The average salary of a BBA intern in 2016 was £21k and the highest salary paid was £47k.*

Key feature Work placements The BBA is one of a few degrees in the country to offer two six-month work placements – giving you the opportunity to experience work in two different sectors and organisations. This enables you to get a feel for the type of work you prefer and in which direction to take your future career. The practical experience can also help you make a more informed choice of units when you return from your first placement. Going out on placement at the end of Year one means you can relate theory to practice at an early stage in the course. Discussions in class are also enriched by students’ varied work experiences, and business contacts made on placement can also prove useful later in the degree. First placement The first placement takes place in semester one of Year two and introduces you to the operations and management of organisations. You can be based in one department, where you will take on a specific role or work on a single project; or you can experience short periods in several departments, allowing you to gain a broad overview of the organisation.

These placements can often take place in an SME or a start-up which provides excellent professional exposure to the working world. Second placement The second placement takes place in semester two of Year three. This placement is more likely to be linked to the specialised studies that you have chosen to pursue from Year two onwards, and the business sector and job you choose are likely to relate closely to your future career aspirations. In general, the work tends to be of a more responsible nature and will frequently be of the same type and level as that expected of graduate trainees. Project work is likely to provide the framework for this placement.

The Bath BSc in Business Administration

Learning through project work Action learning is a key theme throughout the degree. It requires you to reflect on your own experiences, through group work and discussion, in order to improve performance. You are given two opportunities to develop vital skills for your Final Year Project, in Year two and three: Research Project The Research Project allows you to develop an understanding of what research is and the different research methods available. It also teaches you how to plan a research project. You will develop an understanding of how to produce research problems and questions, proposal writing, literature reviews, research methods and ethical issues. The unit will also provide you with an understanding of theoretical issues underlying management research and how this relates to our understanding of knowledge and truth. You will complete a critical evaluation of a piece of academic literature and a small-scale research project as part of the assessment for this unit. Action Project The Action Project allows you to tackle a practical problem and to begin to apply some of the concepts, techniques and skills you have acquired during the taught parts of the course. It also provides you with an introduction to group organisation and project management, useful for the Final Year Project. Working as part of a team of five or six, you will organise an event or initiative of your choosing with the aim of supporting a charitable organisation. Organisations may be local, national or international. The project will allow you to demonstrate your ability to plan a practical activity and adapt your objectives to meet the needs of the situation. At the end of the project, you will present your findings and submit a written report.

Key feature 1

Final Year Project (FYP) In your final year, you have the opportunity to get off campus and work on a real-life project with a real-life organisation with real-life consequences!

Here are a few examples of previous Action Projects: • A comedy show that raised funds and awareness for Designability, a national charity that creates life-changing assistive technologies. • A bicycle competition that raised funds and awareness for Get Kids Going!; a national charity supplying sports wheelchairs for children and young adults. • In collaboration with Villers Park Education Trust whose mission is to remove barriers to social mobility, a team of students taught classes about management and studying at university to a group of a secondary school pupils from less advantaged backgrounds Final Year Project (FYP) The Final Year Project is where the knowledge and concepts you have acquired during the taught course come face-to-face with the practitioner world. It provides an opportunity to apply your learning to a real business problem, normally commissioned by a client organisation. Students agree the project is one of the most demanding but rewarding aspects of the degree and a big plus for their CV - whatever fields they decide to enter. The project is essentially an investigation that involves designing a research plan in conjunction with your client, carrying out the research before writing up a report and presenting it to the client and the university assessment panel.

The project might be a piece of research on a new market opportunity, a comparative study of best practice in the industry or a study of employee or customer perceptions. The Final Year Project contributes 20% towards your final mark.

2

Projects have been carried out for a wide variety of charities, SMEs and multinational corporations both in the UK and abroad. Recent project sponsors include ABInBev, Accenture, Action on Addiction, Bayer, BMW, Cisco, IMS Health, L’Oréal, Moet Hennessy, Novum Law, Royal Mail, Superdrug, Theatre Royal Bath, Carers’ Centre, Vodafone and Zurich. Below are some examples of previous projects: 1. Marketing for a High-Tech Start-Up: Effectively Engaging and Leveraging Online Communities. 2. Project Supermen. Motivation or Retail Stimuli: What Really Drives the Male Consumer? 3. Increasing engagement amongst beneficiaries: a study into the non-profit sector.

“ The academic exchange provided a fantastic opportunity to get outside of my comfort zone and learn in a culture completely different from the UK ” Jacob Brammer, on exchange at NTU, Singapore

Teaching methods and assessment

International academic exchange

You will benefit from a wide range of teaching methods including lectures, seminars and practical workshops. You may analyse case studies or video-based material, take part in a role-play, or visit companies and other organisations, throughout the course.

The School of Management Academic Exchange Programme gives you the opportunity to study abroad at one of our partner universities in Europe, the USA, Australia, Canada and Asia. As a BBA student you have the opportunity to join the exchange in the first semester of your final year. The language of instruction for the exchange is English.

Various methods are used to assess your progress. Some units place emphasis on formal examinations combined with coursework, which might take the form of an essay or small group project. Other assessments are based on individual projects or portfolio work which may last several weeks. The work you complete in your second and third year accounts for 32% of the total marks awarded, while the remaining 68% is attributable to the work you do in your final year. The marks you gain in the first year do not count towards the degree; however you must pass the first year in order to progress to Year two.

The advantages include: • Take courses not available in Bath • Experience a different academic, social and cultural environment • Carry out your Final Year Project in an international context • Expand your knowledge of international business • Enhance your CV, widening the range of opportunities for your future career

The Bath BSc in Business Administration

Meet our students Glenn Herriott, BSc in Business Administration student on placement at HelloFresh “ I visited Bath on an Open Day and was blown away by the incredible campus and when I met the lecturers they were all extremely knowledgeable. The fact that Bath was ranked number one for Student Satisfaction in 2013 and 2014, told me that Bath would be somewhere I would be happy as well as somewhere I would learn a significant amount. I have the freedom to choose my modules depending on what interests me and there are so many varied and exciting modules to choose from. I can adapt my modules to suit the exact career I wish to go into. I love the fact that I get to go on two work placements, both of which are with large companies fulfilling important roles and responsibilities. I am confident that I will have an exciting career in business, and this is in large part, due to the assistance from the University of Bath and its incredible lecturers. I’m currently on placement at HelloFresh in Shoreditch, London. It’s a billion-dollar global start-up company that is changing the way the world eats through providing healthy, nutritious meal boxes – if you subscribe to HelloFresh you get all the ingredients delivered to your door along with several different, tasty recipes to follow so you can make world-class dishes. I’m a procurement assistant, working hard to ensure that HelloFresh put the highest quality and tastiest ingredients inside the boxes. I feel my placement will be beneficial because I have adapted to working in a fast-moving, high-pressure environment. I now feel much more confident in driving changes and making decisions. I am much more organised in my day-to-day working life, which will help me tremendously in my future career. The placements team have been absolutely amazing in ensuring that my CV and cover letter were ready to send off to employers. Their ongoing support whilst on placement is hugely valuable. I owe so much of my success at HelloFresh to the placements team at Bath. A typical week as an undergraduate student involves attending high-quality lecturers, run by inspirational academics. In seminars we delve much deeper into the subject and debate and challenge assumptions with fellow students. In addition, there is a huge array of exciting sports and societies to get involved in. Bath is a fantastic city, with loads of fun to be had – whatever time or day. I loved running the Bath Half marathon last year and raising £150 for Bath’s university charity Raise and Give in the process. It was a surreal feeling, being cheered on by friends, family and Bath residents, especially when I crossed the line! I have enjoyed meeting so many fantastic friends, living in a wonderful area, and learning so many new aspects of business. I feel extremely privileged to have been given the opportunity to study at Bath and work at HelloFresh.

The Bath BSc in Business Administration

Meet our graduates Stefana Covalciuc, BSc in Business Administration now working at Bain & Company

For my first placement I worked in Commercial Banking at HSBC London. For my second I worked in the Economic Department for the Permanent Mission of Romania at the United Nations in New York. I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to try both the private and the public sector because I could not decide which one attracted me more. Through its curricula, the BBA course provided me with the necessary skills and knowledge to embark on both experiences and perform at the highest level. At the same time, it allowed me to explore and then decide the professional path that I wanted to pursue in the long-term. During my exchange I went to City University of Hong Kong, which was a challenging, but incredibly rewarding experience. After my exchange I felt I became more mature and open to new cultures. The international exchange really pushed my limits and patience because I had a short amount of time to adapt to a completely different culture. Luckily my roommate, who was a local student, was very kind and introduced me to the city as well as invited me to integrate in their community. The lecturers were excited to have international students and they were always challenging us with new questions. This was actually my favourite part, because in Hong Kong the classes are quite small and students have time to interact and debate about different topics. The lectures were intellectually stimulating because you always had to

engage with others as well as prepare in advance for the class. I remember having a class on negotiation analysis where the professor asked us to do a small video of us negotiating in a nearby market. At the time it took me out of my comfort zone, yet I managed to overcome my own inhibitions with the help of others. Besides work, I also had the time to taste the Asian culture through different events organised by other exchange students. Every weekend there was something new going on which was very exciting! Looking back on my undergraduate experience it is very hard to choose one particular moment that I enjoyed the most. The whole course was absolutely fantastic and I feel that each experience, be it a university term, a placement or the international exchange in Hong Kong was just as valuable and satisfying. Each opportunity changed me in a positive way. I have enhanced my knowledge and I became more aware of and confident in my own potential. The BBA course is a race against your own limits that you end up winning in the end. However, the international exchange in Hong Kong was truly unique and perhaps will be the memory I will cherish the most throughout my career as it totally changed my mind set and opened my eyes to new horizons. Since graduating from Bath, I have completed my MSc in Management, Organisations and Governance at London School of Economics and Political Science. This was a great opportunity for me to explore more in-depth the subject of entrepreneurship and how one can succeed in building top performing organisations. After that I decided to further pursue this path by giving back to society and took six months off, during which I have worked for Endeavor South Africa in Johannesburg for four months. During my time there I had the opportunity to interact with local entrepreneurs and support the Endeavor team in setting up a VC fund aimed at investing in successful African start-ups. In 2016 I joined Bain & Company and am now working in the Consumer Products & Retail industry.

“ I chose to study the BBA at Bath firstly because of its uniquely tailored course – a perfect combination between theory and practical experience at top tier companies. As a very proactive person, I wanted my undergraduate degree to be a real challenge, to constantly stimulate me while offering me the necessary flexibility to adapt to new circumstances. Secondly, I wanted to grow in an international environment and to have the opportunity to interact with students from different countries and the BBA most definitely comprised of a diverse pool of talent. Lastly, the course’s prestige and reputation attracted me because I knew it would increase my prospects of getting a job after graduating.

“ The biggest deciding factor when choosing a university was the placement opportunity. As a young adult, it is hard to be sure of the career you want to follow. The chance to do a year in industry helps to guide this decision and shape your future. The placement opportunities offered at Bath are above and beyond other universities. The experienced and dedicated placements team support students in gaining great placements with top companies.

“ Although I knew I wanted to go into business, I was unsure about the specifics. A BSc Management course has quite a broad scope and will teach you skills which are applicable to a large variety of careers. This will give you more time to decide on the details of your future. It doesn´t matter whether you want to go into Marketing, Finance or Management, whether you want to start your own business or work as an employee – a degree in Management will help you succeed in any of these areas.

The placement experience at first seems daunting but we received weekly PDP lectures from the placements team to prepare us for the application period. These sessions were hugely useful for CV development, cover letter writing, preparing us for online tests and interviews – some of these skills that I had never previously learnt. We also had a mock interview with an employer which was invaluable in helping us understand the process and how we would perform in the pressured interview environment. The best thing about studying at Bath is the community feel achieved by a campus university with staff and students that deeply care about making everyone happy and comfortable. This enables great academic and non-academic achievements by all.

Bath’s School of Management is consistently ranked as one of the top business schools in the country and has an excellent reputation among employers. Furthermore, the University of Bath is one of the few institutes that provides students with the opportunity to take a placement year. In that year, you are able to gain experience in the industry and get a feel for the dynamics of a full-time job. In order to ensure that you will get the job you want, the university has set up a great careers service department, which will actively advise and help you during your job search. Students have great opportunities to engage in many different clubs and societies. From playing all kinds of sports to participating in the arts – Baths offers fun extra-curricular opportunities for everyone and if you think that something is missing, you can just make a society yourself. Although the academic standard is quite high, a week at the University of Bath entails much more than just reading books and writing essays. I personally play basketball three times a week, engage in social entrepreneurship projects and meet my friends regularly. If you can manage your time well, the possibilities of what you can do are (pretty much) endless. Bath is a campus university, which means that the student community is very close from day one. That makes it easy to find friends and to feel comfortable in no time. Moreover, the student body is culturally diverse and the interactions with your peers from different countries will broaden your horizon.

For my placement, I am working at Unilever in Marketing as a Global Assistant Brand Manager. I have worked with a hugely diverse team of talented individuals from all around the world and have worked closely with other functions such as Finance and Research & Development.

Doing an international academic exchange exposed me to numerous different cultures, allowed me to meet people from all around the world and travel around Asia extensively. Singapore itself was a great city to live in, as it is the perfect combination of Western and Asian culture. In addition, the local people as well as the SMU lecturers are very welcoming and I found it almost effortless to settle into life there. “ The modules gave me a breadth of understanding in all the key areas whilst enabling me to advance my knowledge in areas relevant to me and my future. My placement gave me the context for what I had learnt as well as developing my confidence and giving me assurance over my future as a graduate. ” Rebecca Parsons, BSc in Accounting and Finance

University of Bath School of Management

Meet our graduates Rebecca Parsons, BSc in Accounting and Finance “ Initially, I visited Bath due to its reputation and consistent high rankings in the league tables, but I was struck on the Open Day by the welcoming atmosphere, the employment prospects and the amazing sports facilities. I favoured the course itself due to the structure. It provided an introduction to a range of key topics including economics, computing and statistics. It became flexible in later years enabling me to study a variety of modules including HR, sustainability, audit and strategy. The set structure in the first year meant I was well informed to choose which modules suited me in later years. The course was challenging at times but the people, both students and staff, were fantastic and supportive. I really enjoyed that most coursework was group work; it meant that I learnt so much from other students and helped me to know my own strengths and weaknesses. The teaching staff focused on current issues, linking what we were learning to the real world, which gave everything more context. I worked in audit at EY for my placement, working on a range of technology and media clients. I was exposed to senior finance personnel from the outset and given a high level of responsibility within my teams. A particular highlight for me was visiting the London Stock Exchange to watch the announcement for my main FTSE 250 client. During my placement I was able to begin my ACA and I found that the accounting modules up until that point prepared me really well for the ACA exams. Whilst applying I was able to meet current employees at campus events, who were able to give me a better understand of the role, people and culture. I also gained interview tips from former BAF placement students. Furthermore, EY ran one of our PDP sessions giving extra tips on their assessment centre, and the placements team gave me one-on-one interview practice. In addition to EY, I gained offers from Intel and Group PSA and was still in the running for placements at other big four firms when I accepted my offer. I feel like I gained so much from this course and Bath University as a whole. The modules gave me a breadth of understanding in all the key areas whilst enabling me to advance my knowledge in areas relevant to me and my future. My placement gave me the context for what I had learnt as well as developing my confidence and giving me assurance over my future as a graduate. A degree alone has limited worth now in the graduate market, but this course gave me the relevant knowledge, crucial skills and experience that I need to succeed in the next steps of my career. Bath is an amazing city to live in; four years later I am still amazed at how beautiful it can be. I worked part time at the Rec meaning I got to watch Bath Rugby play many matches. I loved the sporting side to Bath, the facilities on campus are exceptional, yet the clubs are welcome to all abilities. I ran next to Olympic athletes in the gym and bumped into the England Rugby team at the STV. The people and atmosphere on campus and in the town made these four years the best ever. Gaining a graduate offer from EY meant I was able to focus on my studies in my final year. They also let me defer for a year so I can travel. I am off on a round-the-world trip with some friends, before moving back to London to carry on at EY and complete my ACA.

“ This degree has certainly enhanced my employability, not just through the knowledge gained but also by improving my confidence and interpersonal skills. ” Rosalie Verge, BSc in Accounting and Finance now working at PwC

University of Bath School of Management

Meet our graduates Rosalie Verge, BSc in Accounting and Finance now working at PwC “ I have always enjoyed numerical subjects and knew that eventually I wanted to become a chartered accountant. Compared to a lot of other numerical degrees, Accounting and Finance is much more applicable to everyday life and also offers exemptions to professional exams. To study at Bath was an easy decision for me; I loved the city, I loved the campus and all of the students and staff were so friendly and welcoming. Combined with the prestigious reputation, high league table rankings and the opportunity to do a placement, my mind was made up from my first visit. For my placement I worked for 11 months at PwC in London, working as an audit associate specialising in insurance and investment management clients. On a day-to-day basis I was based at client site, working in a team to ensure that financial statements gave a true and fair view of the company. Alongside client work I also started training for my ACA and completed four professional exams during the year, in assurance, tax, audit and financial accounting. It was a fantastic year and a very steep learning curve! I was offered a graduate job at the end of my placement which made my final year much easier as I didn’t have to juggle job applications with studying. It was also useful as a lot of the content I covered at PwC is also covered in final year modules and it gave me real life experience of how the accounting and finance industry works in practice. This degree has given me a broad insight into so many different areas of business: tax, law, economics, marketing and strategy, as well as a detailed understanding of accounting and finance. The flexibility of the course, particularly in the final year, allowed me to focus on the aspects which I find most interesting and which will be most relevant to me in the future. This degree has certainly enhanced my employability, not just through the knowledge gained but also by improving my confidence and interpersonal skills. Being part of the School of Management offers far more than just the degree course – there are numerous other things to get involved with, for instance interdepartmental football, mentoring, or acting as a Student Ambassador. In my final year I enjoyed chairing the School of Management Events Committee, in which students organise both social and educational events for other students within the school, including a Spring Ball in the Roman Baths and Pump Room for 250 students. I returned to PwC as a second year graduate – my placement year counts as the first year of their graduate scheme. I work in audit, specialising in insurance clients and have been promoted to a Senior Associate. I also have just passed my final ACA exams.

The Year Abroad enables you to become immersed in the social, political and cultural life of either a French, German or Spanish-speaking country. Our students frequently comment on the value of this year away and many find it to be one of the most memorable and rewarding experiences of their lives. Placement, study at Business School, or both? You can choose to do a work placement(s), full academic year in one of our prestigious partner business schools, or combine both a placement and a period of study – it’s your choice. Our experienced Year Abroad Officers will help you make this important decision. Option 1: Work placement(s) If you opt for the placement-only route, you will spend a minimum of nine months (full-time) working. Most students choose to complete 12 months to maximise their business experience and language competence. Relationships have been built-up with a range of prestigious employers, many of whom regularly recruit our IMML students. Some employers offer a hand-over period with

a previous placement student, which facilitates your integration into the company and your role. The type of work offered to placement students is diverse, ranging from marketing and public relations through to finance, banking and computing, and so are the task and levels of responsibility. Much depends

on your interest, prior experience and level of fluency in the relevant language. We have placement opportunities in a variety of national and multinational companies in all sectors, but offers are determined by the economic climate and legislation. Being flexible and open-minded about the type of company, job and location you apply for will maximise your chances of obtaining a placement. What kind of job could I be doing? UNISTATS

“ I always knew I wanted to have an international career working for a multinational company, so It was key for me to find a course where I could learn a third language as well as explore the different facets of business. This is exactly what the BSc in International Management and Modern Languages offers. I was able to study a breadth of subjects and had the opportunity to start specialising in my second year. Another unique part of the BSc in International Management and Modern Languages is that some of the Management modules are in the language you are studying, bringing together both parts of the degree. This is something not many universities in the UK offer. I decided to work for the duration of my year aboard and successfully secured a twelve month internship with KAEFER Isoliertechnik GmbH & Co. KG, an international company headquartered in Bremen, northern Germany. I worked for the first six months in the Communication and Corporate Social Responsibility department and the last six months in the Business Development team. My linguistic skills improved massively, giving me a huge confidence boost which clearly showed in my final year. ” Isabel Ashdown, BSc in International Management with Modern Languages now working at BMW Group

“ Bath is among the best universities for placement years with great links with international companies. For me, a year-long internship in a French company was highly valuable, and, given my subject area, indispensable experience; both for my personal and professional development. ” Madelaine Pitt , BSc in International Management with Modern Languages now working at University of Strasbourg

University of Bath School of Management

Meet our graduates Madelaine Pitt, BSc in International Management with Modern Languages now working at University of Strasbourg “ I chose IMML because the course is completely unique in the UK. Bath is one of the only universities to offer an integrated 50-50 mix of business and language. This gave me a great grounding in a variety of management disciplines and helps you to achieve a near-native level in your chosen language. Other institutions offer business degrees with a limited number of unrelated language modules which just don’t allow you to achieve the same fluency or confidence. Bath is among the best universities for placement years with great links with international companies. For me a year-long internship in a French company was highly valuable, and given my subject area, indispensable experience; both for my personal and professional development. I enjoyed the variety on the course. The breadth of modules meant that I could go from calculating bond prices in corporate finance to discussing the rise of populism in the French political landscape in the same morning. I enjoyed more researchbased modules in my final year where I got the opportunity to zoom in on and explore in depth topics that interested me; for example, I studied the effect of a merger between airlines on competition in the market for flights from Frankfurt to New York. I had a fantastic year at JLL Real Estate Advisory in Lyon in France. It was my first taste of working in a large corporation. Thanks to the young, motivated and friendly team around me, as well as opportunities to travel with work, I loved it. I discovered a fascinating profession that I would definitely consider pursuing in the future and fell in love with the beautiful, dynamic city of Lyon. I was the only IMML student in Lyon so I felt totally immersed in the language and culture and made incredible friendships both within the company and outside it. Only when I began working at my placement company did I fully appreciate how well IMML prepares you for the business world! Following my final year, I feel I would be well-placed to work in a small or international company either in an English-speaking or French-speaking country. I feel IMML gives you a cultural awareness that is vital for today’s world of work. I also gained a level in French that I had always hoped for – complete fluency close to that of a native speaker. Some of my best experiences in Bath were with our student radio station, University Radio Bath. I managed the breakfast show and presented a variety of shows, including music, entertainment and foreign language shows, as well as live events such as the Students’ Union Election Results. I found student radio incredibly exciting and it was a great opportunity to meet people and build new skills, both specific to radio (creating, producing and editing content) and general (in terms of communication and time management). Thanks to an exchange between the University of Bath and the University of Strasbourg, I am now teaching English at the University of Strasbourg for one academic year. I then intend to move to Germany to work or complete a Master’s degree.

The Bath BSc in International Management and Modern Languages

Meet our graduates Lucy Woodcock , BSc in International Management with Modern Languages “ I was very impressed by the Open Day I attended whilst in sixth form as it was well organised, insightful and gave a fantastic first impression! The campus had such a friendly feel to it and everyone was so welcoming. Furthermore, with its beautiful landscapes and array of things to do, I knew I could easily get used to living in Bath! The course structure of the 50:50 split with the added bonus of some management being taught in the foreign language was really appealing. The curriculum was engaging and challenging, allowing me to pursue my passions for both management and German. Furthermore, the year abroad opportunities and support available looked excellent, with many links to well-respected international companies and universities firmly established. Choosing a course that would give me good career prospects was also a priority and I knew I would be in a strong position with an IMML degree from the University of Bath. All this together made the IMML course stand out from the crowd! Thanks to the varied course content, I was able to significantly increase my understanding of several aspects of management. My language skills dramatically improved as did my cultural awareness, especially on my year abroad. The IMML course equipped me with great time management and communication skills, as well as the ability to work successfully as part of a team and also as an individual. I have no doubt that this skill set is perfect preparation for my career ahead. I spent my year working in the Operational Marketing department of Rohde& Schwarz in Munich. My placement was thoroughly enjoyable; I liked that it challenged me and there was an amazing working atmosphere. They really recognise the calibre of IMML students and therefore I was able to take on real responsibility from day one. A lot of my work focused around trade show organisation: liaising with colleagues and customers, graduate profile working on marcom campaigns and creating product media for example. The opportunity to travel to trade shows in places such as Barcelona and Amsterdam was fantastic; not only did I get to see the results of my hard work but the networking was invaluable. I also played a central role in the collection of customer leads, ensuring they were analysed and distributed to the subsidiaries worldwide. Being in central Europe, I made the most of the travelling opportunities available to me. It was an incredible year, there really is no better experience than being fully immersed in another country and its culture. I made many friends and memories to last a lifetime! Following the completion of my IMML degree, I began a year in the position of Education Officer at the University of Bath Students’ Union. This was a great role, dealing with lots of changes both at local and national level. After a really enjoyable year as Education Officer, I was elected to be the President of the Students’ Union during the University’s 50th anniversary year - a role in which I was the lead representative for over 16,500 students. It was an exciting challenge being able to represent the students of the University of Bath and to put the communication, teamwork and leadership skills I’d acquired through my IMML degree into practice! The next step for me is to hopefully move to London and work in a management role and to use my German as much as I can!

Life in Bath Bath is a lively, safe, cultural and historic city.

Voted one of the UK’s top three favourite cities (Guardian & Observer Travel Awards), Bath is one of the most interesting, cosmopolitan and vibrant cities in the UK. It is also on UNESCO’s World Heritage list. As well as being a very safe city, Bath is spectacularly beautiful. Its striking architecture, the Roman Baths, medieval Abbey and world-famous Georgian squares and sweeping crescents built of honey-colour stone, all combine to make it one of the most remarkable cities in Europe. The best-known feature of the city is the natural hot water spring. This was first used by the Celts who believed it to be sacred, but it was subsequently and more famously exploited by the Romans, who built the extensive baths from which the city takes its name and which may still be visited today. The Roman Baths represent one of the most completed ancient sites in the world, much of it unchanged for 2000 years.

Innovation in Bath The South West is one of the fastest developing regions in the UK and Bath and Bristol are at the centre of its growing economy. Bath is well-known as a creative hub and significant investment has been made towards its design and technology sector. The collaborative community attracts ambitious, talented people from a range of industries making Bath an ideal location for creatives and entrepreneurs. The University of Bath Innovation Centre provides a unique environment that combines work space, business support and inspiration. Its thriving entrepreneurial network reaches

out from the City of Bath across the UK. For more information visit www.ubic.org.uk Beyond the city London is approximately 90 minutes from Bath by train (due to be reduced to just over an hour in 2017) and there is a frequent service operating every 30 minutes. For those who want to explore a larger city close by, Bristol is about fifteen minutes away. As well as being steeped in history, Bristol is the South West’s capital, offering a lively restaurant, bar and music scene as well as Cabot Circus, a first-class shopping venue boasting

At the Thermae Bath Spa, Britain’s original and only natural thermal spa, visitors today can experience the warm, mineral-rich waters. The open-air, rooftop pool boasts spectacular views across the skyline of Bath and is the perfect place to unwind. The social scene Bath is a lively city offering some of the best shopping and cultural attractions outside London. As well as many small and independent retailers, there is also a main shopping centre, South Gate. Bath also has a huge variety of restaurants, cafes, bars, pubs, clubs, three theatres, cinemas and a wide range of museums.
