Historical Notes
Gandalf the Grey Wizard of the Istari
The loss of the Great Goblin at the hands of a band of Dwarves inflamed the bitter memories of the orcs' (goblins') War with the Dwarves. Under the command of Bolg, whose own father Azog had been killed at Nanduhirion, all the armies of the orcs of the Misty Mountains, and their allies the wolves and bats, began to gather and plan their revenge. Bilbo and Thorin's Dwarves took Erebor (the Lonely Mountain), and slew Smaug the dragon, but Thranduil's Wood-elves joined with the Lake-men, and they marched north to claim a share of Smaug's treasure. In response, Thorin called on his cousin Dáin, who set out with his own army from the Iron Hills. Already the first arrows had been shot when a dark cloud was seen coming out of the north - the bats that heralded the orc-armies of Bolg. With the help of Gandalf, the Elves, Men and Dwarves forgot their differences in the face of this new threat, and battle was joined on the slopes of Erebor and the valley beneath. The elvish bow unit is armed with longbows.

Beorn, in the shape of a great bear, may not be attacked until he has moved. The Eagles may not move until Beorn has moved.
The Treasure is worth a permanent victory banner to the goblins if a goblin unit can enter its hex.
The Eagles may not attack orcish units inside the Lonely Mountain, nor may they end their movement on the Treasure hex or the hex between the Treasure hex and the gateway hex (Thorin's starting hex).
Special Rules
Leadership rules apply to the units labeled Thranduil, Thorin, Bolg, and Bard. Use a suitable marker to indicate units with leaders. Leadership rules are explained in the historical background.
The 11 hill hexes of the Lonely Mountain are impassable to all units. The River Running is fordable along its entire length. Use the blue reflex bow banners for the blue banner goblin cavalry. These represent bow armed warg-riders. If available, use elvish figures for Thranduil and the 4 Pennant camp units nearest to him. Some human figures may have to be drafted in to fill out the orcish units.
Place figures representing Gandalf and Bilbo on the hex labelled green 'A', Ravenhill. If this hex is at any time occupied by the goblins the goblins earn a permanent victory banner, the Gandalf and Bilbo figures are removed, and the Pennant player's Wizard Lore council member is removed (reduced to level 0).
