The goal of the Berkeley MBA Program is to develop you as an innovative leader and teach you fundamental business concepts. We define innovative leadership as the ability to put new ideas into action in every corner and every function of an organization, and to do so responsibly. This concept is based on a set of specific capabilities that are valued in today’s marketplace by employers. You gain the knowledge to become a leader who defines what’s next—for our markets and for our societies. Berkeley-Haas is uniquely positioned to deliver such leaders.

“Problem Finding, Problem Solving aims to provide some basic tools for innovative thinking, enhancing students’ ability to identify assumptions, learn through direct observation, synthesize meaningful insights from complex data, generate a wide range of ideas, and tell inspiring stories to engage others and get feedback.” Sara L. Beckman

Sr. Lecturer and Winner, University of California Distinguished Teaching Award, 2001

built on timely and relevant capabilities Your Haas education is anchored in the fundamentals of general management, including the latest theories of and best practices in business—from accounting and finance to marketing and strategy. You learn to lead and manage an enterprise as a whole. The rigorous curriculum provides you with a basic framework of qualitative, quantitative, analytical, strategic, and problem solving skills. You not only gain knowledge about best business practices, but also learn about the fundamental principles behind them—the “how” and the “why.”

2   Haas School of Business    Leading Through Innovation

A Connected Leadership Curriculum

Innovative leadership is a connecting theme that runs through the entire Berkeley MBA Program—in both the required (core) and elective portions of the curriculum. The process starts with the careful selection of Berkeley MBA students, who have demonstrated leadership and exemplify the school’s defining principles. In the core, you begin to learn the capabilities of the innovative leader, such as the skills to define opportunities. For example, the Problem Finding, Problem Solving course teaches you several modes of thinking—such as design thinking—in order to find, frame, and solve difficult problems. The courses Leading People and Leadership Communications teach specific motivational skills, such as influencing others without having direct authority over them. A required experiential learning course gives you practice in solving real-world business problems and emphasizes innovative leader capabilities. The list of experiential options ranges from applied innovation projects with major firms to global consulting opportunities.

Learning by Doing

Students can choose from among the following core experiential learning options, many of them unique to the Berkeley MBA Program and first of their kind.

Haas@Work

Teams of Berkeley MBA students work with top executives at major firms such as Virgin America (pictured here) to research and develop solutions for real-world business challenges. The best ideas are then selected by each firm’s executives for implementation.

International Business Development

The Path to Innovative Leadership A General Management Foundation

As part of the school’s acclaimed Haas@Work course in applied innovation, students work with top executives at major firms such as Visa, Cisco, Disney, Schwab, Panasonic, Clorox, Wells Fargo, and Virgin America (pictured here). Haas@Work is just one of many options students may choose from to complete their experiential course requirement.

In the first global program of its kind, student teams tackle business projects across the globe, ranging from creating business plans for nonprofit or government programs to providing market research or financial analysis for burgeoning corporations. After working on each project throughout the spring semester, the student teams then travel for three weeks for hands-on experience with their client organizations.

Social Sector Solutions

A Supportive Culture and Environment

A unique aspect of the Berkeley MBA leadership approach is the conscious use of the Haas School culture to shape how and what you learn. The school recently codified its culture into four defining principles: Question the Status Quo, Confidence Without Attitude, Students Always, and Beyond Yourself. The defining principles are heavily influenced by the school’s location in the San Francisco Bay Area—the world’s epicenter for innovation and entrepreneurship. And they are shaped by the culture of UC Berkeley, a world-class research generator with a legendary atmosphere of fresh thinking.

Students work with partner McKinsey & Co. to engage in innovative consulting projects, providing plans, creative ideas, and solutions for challenges unique to nonprofit organizations.

Clean Tech to Market

Students work with scientists at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory to evaluate the commercial viability of next-generation technologies aimed at addressing critical energy and climate change issues.

Corporate Social Responsibility

Students engage with companies such as WalMart to develop business strategies that are both socially responsible and aligned with business objectives and core competencies.

Entrepreneurship

Students select from a variety of opportunities that challenge them to come up with real business solutions and business plans for highpotential enterprises.

Managing New Product Development Cross-disciplinary student teams develop innovative products or services from original ideas through firstpass prototypes.

Real Estate Investment Analysis

Students work with stakeholders to conduct comprehensive analyses that include concept development, full market analysis, funding strategy, and entitlement and stakeholder consultation and approval strategies.

The Haas Investment Fund

Groups of students apply the skills acquired in finance and other courses to develop and implement a real trading strategy.

Team-initiated Project

Students may choose to work with faculty members to create their own teambased experiential project.

You will experience the Berkeley MBA’s rigorous, comprehensive curriculum in which you master the essential skills of management and leadership. After fulfilling the requirements of the core curriculum, you will find a high degree of flexibility to tailor your education to meet your own goals and interests through a wide variety of cutting-edge elective offerings and global opportunities.

The school’s acclaimed International Business Development (IBD) course, which is one of the options for fulfilling the experiential learning requirement, sends an average of 120 students around the world each year to consult for a variety of firms and organizations. One group of students, including Robbie Bhathal (pictured left), MBA 12, was charged with researching three industries--rubber, rice, and shrimp for a new venture in Cambodia.

A Rigorous, Flexible Curriculum prepares you for every kind of leadership challenge The Core

The Berkeley MBA curriculum consists of 12 required core courses that provide the analytical tools and essential knowledge to lead effectively. For example, you will learn how to set direction in your strategy course, and how to manage complex projects and enterprises in your operations course. Throughout the core, you are taught the lessons of leading responsibly. Core courses, which make up about 40 percent of a typical student’s course of study, are usually all taken in the first year.

Concurrent Degree Options

The Haas School offers concurrent degree programs in areas of special interest to business professionals, including the following: • JD/MBA Program • MBA/MPH Program in Health Management • MBA/MA Program in International and   Area Studies For more information, visit mba.haas.berkeley.edu/

Electives

A central feature of the Berkeley MBA program is its level of flexibility that enables you to customize your studies according to your own goals. An impressive menu of original elective courses comprises 60 percent of the curriculum, meaning you begin to design your own course of study in the first year of the program. You may choose from a wide variety of constantly evolving electives and dual degree offerings—from within the Haas School and from the wider university—as well as design courses of your own in conjunction with a faculty member.

Global Perspective

Global experience is an integral aspect of the Berkeley MBA experience. Global business is part of many courses, including courses with a specific focus on international topics, such as Global Strategy and Multinational Enterprises, and Doing Business in China. You are encouraged to take advantage of international opportunities, such as spending a semester abroad, attending international seminars, planning study trips to other countries during breaks, or serving as a consultant through the International Business Development program.

Learning Beyond the Classroom Providing students with hands-on exposure to real-world business situations is a key strength of the Berkeley MBA Program. You are required to take an experiential course that emphasizes innovative leadership. Additional experiential learning activities are required in many courses. You can also participate in numerous out-ofclassroom opportunities that build upon your leadership skill set. Teamwork is emphasized throughout, including skill development and group coaching on how to be optimally effective in teams.

Haas School faculty members are explorers and discoverers, seeking new ideas and insights at the frontiers of knowledge. They are internationally recognized leaders in the study of the economic, social, political, and technological forces shaping global markets today. Haas faculty members play an active role in national and international business communities, serving as consultants, board members, and speakers at major business conferences and seminars.

Berkeley-Haas Professor Emeritus Oliver E. Williamson was awarded the 2009 Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences—the second time a Haas professor has won the honor since 1994—for his work in the area of economic governance.

Berkeley-Haas Professor Carl Shapiro was appointed a member of the Council of Economic Advisers in 2011 by President Obama. Shapiro formerly served as deputy assistant attorney general for economics in the U.S. Department of Justice’s Antitrust Division. He joins a growing list of Haas School and UC Berkeley faculty members who have served on the council, including Haas Professor and former Dean Laura Tyson and Haas Professor Emerita Janet Yellen. Haas professors Jonathan Leonard, David Levine, and Jim Wilcox have served on the staff of the council as senior economists.

Passionate Scholars and Teachers at the forefront of new ideas A Roster of Experienced Thinkers and Leaders

Several faculty members are authors of widely used textbooks in marketing, economics, and management. Severin Borenstein is a nearly constant presence in the national media explaining the ups and downs of the nation’s energy markets. Michael Katz is a leading thinker and strategist in telecommunications policy. John Morgan and Teck Ho are actively utilizing behavioral and experimental economics to make advances in understanding strategic decision making. Jennifer Chatman is a top authority on organizational culture and post-merger integration. And David Teece is a widely sought expert in the field of innovation and knowledge management.

Real-World Insights from Industry Practitioners

The MBA program also makes creative use of experienced practitioners from industry in its classes as adjunct professors and lecturers. For example, Wall Street veteran Peter Goodson, former partner of private equity firm Clayton, Dubilier & Rice, Inc., teaches the Mergers and Acquisitions course. In his Innovation and Entrepreneurship in Telecommunications and Media course, Dr. Reza Moazzami draws from his more than fifteen years of experience as an engineer, entrepreneur/ CEO, investor, patent holder, and educator in the IT and communications industries.

A Tradition of Teaching Excellence

The cornerstone of the entire Berkeley MBA program is its distinguished faculty members and the high quality of their courses. At Haas, teaching excellence is a high priority. In the Berkeley MBA classroom, faculty members emphasize both theory and practice by using a variety of teaching methods. Case studies, seminars, simulations, guest speakers, and group projects all facilitate the learning process. Classroom learning is enhanced by numerous opportunities to apply the lessons to real-world situations.

John Morgan

Laura Tyson

Teck Ho

Haas School Professor John Morgan’s popular course on game theory challenges students to formulate strategy by learning to forecast the reactions of rivals. Morgan’s cuttingedge behavioral economics research often has far-reaching implications. He recently worked with Yahoo! Labs to design and launch a zombiebased social video game to study the differences between successful and unsuccessful economic game strategies.

Students in Professor Laura Tyson’s International Business course have the opportunity to learn from an expert who has had a hand in shaping global economic policy. Tyson chaired President Clinton’s Council of Economic Advisors. She is currently a member of President Barack Obama’s Economic Advisory Panel. In addition, she is a member of the board of directors for several U.S. companies and a senior adviser to the Center for American Progress and Mckinsey Global Institute.

Learning, according to Professor Teck Ho, is more “concrete when it is hands-on.” That’s why at least one in four of each of his marketing course sessions is interactive. Using computer simulations and role-playing, his students engage in price wars and auctions, negotiate B2B contracts, and put themselves in the shoes of CEOs, marketing directors, suppliers, and retail partners. In 2010, Ho was recognized with the Berkeley Distinguished Teaching Award, the university’s highest teaching honor.

S. K. and Angela Chan Chair in Global Management

William Halford, Jr. Family Professor of Marketing

Kristiana Raube

Adjunct Professor and Executive Director

Haas professional faculty members such as Dr. Kristiana Raube share expert business and leadership knowledge with Berkeley MBA students. In addition to serving as executive director of Haas’ International Business Development program, Raube is a renowned researcher and teacher in the area of health management who has worked to increase health management capacity through executive education and program development in the US and around the world. Guided by four defining principles, the distinctive Berkeley-Haas culture is integral to shaping its MBA students as they learn how to be innovative leaders. Berkeley-Haas students question the status quo, possess confidence without attitude, think beyond themselves, and act as students always. These attributes combine to create an environment conducive to teamwork, collaboration, and involvement. Students are members of a close-knit, supportive peer network that draws on both shared experiences and a diversity of ideas and backgrounds to build bonds that last a lifetime.

Berkeley-Haas students have the opportunity to get involved in a wide range of formal and informal clubs and activities. For example, members of the Haas MBA rugby team, including co-captains Hans Lintermans and Blake Holland, both MBA 12 (pictured left), participated in the Rugby World Championship held at Duke University last spring. The rugby team is just one of more than 45 current student clubs and organizations led by Berkeley-Haas graduate students.

A Collaborative Culture cultivates a unique, dynamic community A Diversity of Experiences

Among the school’s greatest assets is the community of fellow students, who form a lifetime network of friends and professional contacts. The relatively small size of the MBA program (only 240 students enroll in each entering class) encourages students to get to know all members of their class. Students represent a wide range of ethnic backgrounds, religious affiliations, and sexual orientations. About a third of the students are from outside the United States, representing more than 30 countries.

10   Haas School of Business    Leading Through Innovation

Involvement in a Dynamic Community

The diverse and outgoing nature of the Berkeley-Haas culture translates to a vibrant, thriving community of fellow students, alumni, faculty, and staff. From networking mixers to annual conferences, guest speakers to intramural sports competitions, there’s always something happening here. At Haas, virtually everyone gets involved in clubs and community service, managing major conferences, participating in international case competitions, and organizing ski trips to nearby Sierra Nevada resorts.

Going Above and Beyond

UC Berkeley has a long tradition of social responsibility and a commitment to creating a better world. In keeping with that spirit, Berkeley MBA students get involved to make a difference. Almost the entire MBA class participates during the year in one of the many fun events that are a part of the Challenge for Charity—talent shows, charity auctions, and sports competitions that help raise money for the Special Olympics and other organizations. Many Berkeley MBA students also volunteer as mentors for disadvantaged high school students through the Young Entrepreneurs at Haas (YEAH) program.

Question the Status Quo

“The high level of student engagement at Berkeley-Haas is the best example of Question the Status Quo. The students are constantly looking for—and investing their own time and energy into--ways to improve the school. This year, for example, a group of us created a Private Equity Club, filling a gap in the long list of extra-curricular opportunities.”

Serge Stanek, MBA 12

Internship: Partners Group, Private Equity, Zug, Switzerland Previous degree: B.A., Business Administration, University of St.Gallen (HSG), Switzerland Job prior to Haas: A-Connect Group, AG, San Francisco, California

Confidence Without Attitude “The notion that Berkeley-Haas students embody Confidence Without Attitude is 100% true in my experience. These are some of the smartest people I’ve met, but you often have to dig to find out just how accomplished they are.”

Jenny Stingle, MBA 12

Internship: L’Oreal, New York, New York Previous degree: B.A., American Studies, Stanford University Job prior to Haas: Account Manager, Red Bricks Media, San Francisco, California

Beyond Yourself

“The idea of going Beyond Yourself, became real to me in my work with Durationator, a Lousiana start-up. I was one of a team of eight who spent a month working on marketing and pricing strategies for this start-up. Then we spent a week working on-site in New Orleans. Seeing the city, its business, and its citizens struggle back from the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, was inspiring.”

Joe Wadcan, MBA 12

Internship: Javelin Venture Partners, San Francisco, California Previous degrees: B.S., Business Administration, Rochester Institute of Technology Job prior to Haas: Senior Vice President, Citigroup, New York, New York

Students Always

“For me the idea of Students Always means accepting that I don’t know everything. No matter how much I grow, there is always room for more growth.”

Didem Ersoz, MBA 12

Internship: Labs Project Management Intern, Mozilla Labs, Mountain View, California Previous degree: M.Sc., Electrical & Electronics Engineering, Bogazici University, Istanbul, Turkey B.Sc., Electrical & Electronics Engineering, Bogazici University, Istanbul, Turkey Job prior to Haas: Project Manager, Procter & Gamble, Istanbul, Turkey

Or visit one of the many open beaches or picturesque seaside towns dotting the Pacific coastline, including Big Sur, Carmel-by-the-Sea, and Mendocino. Only three hours from campus, explore Yosemite National Park, with its exquisite glacier-carved valley of towering waterfalls and granite mountains, or ski the world-famous Olympic runs at Lake Tahoe.

A History of Path-Bending Innovation

Since its founding in 1868, UC Berkeley has grown with the rapidly expanding population of California and has responded to the educational needs of the developing state. By the 1930s, research at UC Berkeley burgeoned in nuclear physics, chemistry, and biology, leading to the development of the first cyclotron, the isolation of the human polio virus, and the discovery of all the artificial elements heavier than uranium, including Berkelium and Californium. Twenty-one members of the UC Berkeley faculty have been awarded Nobel prizes for these and subsequent achievements in science, literature, and economics. In 2011, the Times of London ranked UC Berkeley the 4th best university in the world. The National Research Council in 2010 awarded UC Berkeley the largest number of high-ranked graduate programs in the US for the third decade in a row—of the 52 programs assessed, 48 were in the top 10 in their categories.

Explore the Opportunities

You are encouraged to supplement business courses with graduate classes outside the business school in areas ranging from engineering, law, and urban planning to foreign languages, international area studies, and public policy. In addition, special interdisciplinary opportunities within the Berkeley community enable you to learn from top experts in almost every field. Joint courses with students in law, engineering, information systems, and public health enhance the educational experience of many MBA students.

UC Berkeley’s University Library was ranked the No. 1 public research university library in North America by the Association of Research Libraries.

• Personal Qualities—We seek applicants who represent the school’s four defining principles: confidence without attitude, question the status quo, beyond yourself, and students always.

The best way to know what it’s really like to be a Berkeley MBA student is to come visit, meet students and faculty, and observe a class. We strongly encourage this investment of your time to help you decide if the program is a good fit for you. For details on how we make it easy for you to explore Haas, visit www.haas.berkeley.edu/admissions/visit.html.

E

• Exams—The GMAT is required for all applicants. Applicants who received their university degrees in countries other than the US, the UK, Australia, or English-speaking Canada are also required to take the TOEFL or IELTS exams.

E

• Academic Aptitude—In reviewing your transcripts, we take into account your choice of coursework, the rigor of your undergraduate major, the competitiveness of your academic institutions, and your grade point average (GPA). Although we do not have a minimum requirement, a GPA of B (3.0) or better is generally the standard for serious consideration. All applicants should have completed, at a minimum, a college-level mathematics or statistics course.

The Berkeley MBA program has one of the most reasonable tuition and fee structures of any top MBA program. Almost 70 percent of Haas students receive some form of financial assistance, including scholarships and loans. For complete financial aid and tuition information, visit www.haas.berkeley.edu/ mba/finaid.

• Professional Experience—The quality of an MBA program is immeasurably enhanced by the realworld business experience that students bring to the classroom. Most of our students have two or more years of full-time professional work experience following the completion of their undergraduate degree. We are also interested in the progression and milestones of your career, as well as your supervisor’s assessment of your value as an employee and potential as a leader.
