IOT network convergence of technology Sensors: Miniaturization, micromachining, and low cost manufacturing leads to smaller sizes, low power, lower costs. Allows us to monitor with higher granularity. Many types or sensors and more on the way

Computing/Internet: Computing power is becoming small and inexpensive enough to add to almost any object. Networks of computers facilitate collaboration through information and resource sharing.

Wireless (RF): Spans a host of technologies including ZigBee and WiFi networks, cellular and satellite communications. Enables a wireless and mobile Internet.

Data capturing: This technology besides others includes RFID and NFC technologies enabling to interact with different objects inside of the retail store with a bar code or by a simple touch 2011-05-06 | Page 4

› Objects automation: Collecting contextual data, processing it, collaborating with other required objects and acting according to the condition should be at some level of automation. › Device Intelligence: The smart objects should be able to intelligently co-operate with the environment in which it will be introduced and to act based on different situations › Device adaptation: There are heterogeneous devices, application scenarios, data format, and communication networks. Each connected objects should be able to adapt the situation where it is now. Adaptation in many senses should be maintained › Dynamicity : When one devices move from one place to another or one application domain to another, it should be dynamically recognized in new scenarios › Devices configuration and provisioning: users should be able to configure devices and develop services of devices without having much technical details. 2011-05-06 | Page 5

IOT architectures key points 1/6 Support various applications using a common communication infrastructure

harmonize the vertical and horizontal aspects

The network will dynamically change and continuously evolving and the things feature varying degrees of autonomy. Ubiquitous devices in different deployments will be added and existing network topologies will be moved around

Networks

IOT architectures key points 2/6 Many environments : the network must be scalable and flexible with an efficient communication and service discovery – There will be small scale (home environment) or large scale (factory, building environment) application area. – Objects communicate with each other and/or with people seamlessly. – Each object might be offering different services. – Architecture should support unambiguous communication of events and additional semantic information in several environments

– Objects have different communication, information and processing capabilities. Each object would also be subjected to very different conditions such as power energy availability and communication bandwidth requirements – The events generated by objects can subsequently be enhanced with additional semantic information that expresses the context in which each event happened, to explain why something occurred, such as why a thing was observed at a location or how and why it interacted with another thing

Interoperability among heterogeneous things and their environments is a need avoid the islands of heterogeneous object network 2011-05-06 | Page 8

IOT architectures key points 3/6 › Handle several needs on connectivity – Many things will not have permanent network connectivity (e.g. aircraft cabin), indeed some things may have no intrinsic network connectivity, but rely on supporting intelligence in their local environment or in remote information systems. – Things will therefore need the ability to communicate their location, state and requirements to information systems that have more permanent or more reliable network connectivity.

2011-05-06 | Page 9

› handle big volume of data – The large number of objects and frequently interaction among, generate a large amount of data that must be handled by the network. – Each object has augmented memory, storage and processing capability. If there are a large number of peer objects communicating with each other, these objects run out of processing, memory and storage and produce huge bytes of data regularly.

IOT architectures key points 4/6 It is important that each thing can be without ambiguity identifiable and retrievable, independently of the current location of the thing or the current network connectivity available to the thing. › Such unique identifiers for things can be globally unique and can have significant consistency and longevity (ideally for the life of the thing), in order that it is possible to gather information about a thing even when that information is collected and owned by a number of different entities and fragmented across a large number of databases and information systems.

› It can also be required to refer to a particular class of things as well as individual things within that class, in order to be able to retrieve or refer to class-level information and services provided for the class of things as well as serial-level information and services provided for each individual thing.

IOT architectures key points 5/6

Security and personal privacy is a big challenge. Confidentiality, authenticity and trustworthiness of communication partners are a must. 2011-05-06 | Page 11

IOT architectures key points 6/6 › The IoT deployment requires developments in network technology (e.g. RFID, WSN…) which is essential for implementing the vision reaching out to objects in the physical world and to bring them into the Internet.

IOT evolution or revolution? › Mrs Reding said it was too early to know whether the future development of the Internet will proceed by evolution or revolution. But change will happen, and we need a common position on important subjects. › A significant change is required and the European Internet scientific and economic actors, researchers, industrialists, SMEs, users, service and content providers, now assert the urgent necessity to redesign the Internet, taking a broad multidisciplinary approach, to meet Europe’s societal and commercial ambitions. (BLED declaration)

IOT part of Future internet › The Internet of Things network is an integrated part of Future Internet and could be defined as a dynamic global network infrastructure with self configuring capabilities based on standard and interoperable communication protocols where physical and virtual “things” have identities, physical attributes, virtual personalities and use intelligent interfaces, and are seamlessly integrated into the information network.

2011-05-06 | Page 15

Conclusion › We envisage that the Internet of Things will allow people and things to be connected

Anytime, Anyplace, with Anything and Anyone, ideally using

Any path/network and Any service. 2011-05-06 | Page 16
