Portion of Text Ch. 1 – Testing the Winds (p. 1-12) Haoyou goes to the dock with his father, Gou Pei. First mate, Di Chou, pushes Gou Pei into a hatchway and ties him to a kite. The kite is sent high up into the sky to test the winds. Gou Pei dies on the kite. Ch. 2 – Troubled Spirits (p. 13-22) Troubles Spirits At Pei’s funeral, Di Chou speaks to Great-Uncle Bo to begin the process to marry Qing‘an (Pei’s widow). Bad omens at the funeral---toppling firework, a dead chicken, an unwelcome kite, the thieving seagull. Ch. 3 – A Proposal (p. 23-32) Di Chou wants to marry Qing‘an and asks Great-Uncle Bo for permission. A medium, who is also a cousin (Mipeng), is called to ask the spirits if it is a good idea. She says the spirits want Di Chou to become a kite maker.

Ch. 4 – The Kite Maker (p. 33-50) Haoyou makes kites to sell for food. Great-Uncle Bo grudgingly gives money for supplies. Mipeng convinces Haoyou to fly a dragon kite to “advertise.” Haoyou sleeps and dreams of a ship sailing into a dragon’s firey mouth. He wakes to the house burning down. Di Chou rescued Qing’an and Wawa. Haoyou saves himself Ch. 5 – Wedding (p. 51-66) Great-Uncle Bo agrees to marriage between Di Chou and Qing’an. The night before the wedding Haoyou and Mipeng find Di Chou drunk. They take him to a ship ready to depart. The ship will only go after the wind has been tested. Haoyou volunteers.

Portion of Text Ch. 6 – Tasting the Wind (p. 67-77) Haoyou bargains with the captain of the Namchi boat to be a kite rider for 100 cashes, so the captain will set sail today and leave (with the drunken Di Chou aboard). Haoyou flies. He thinks he sees his father. Ch. 7 – The Great Miao (p. 78-92) A man named Miao Jie comes to the house. He had seen Gou Haoyou fly and wants him to begin an apprenticeship with the circus. Haoyou insists that Mipeng come too. Great-Uncle Bo agrees and off they go.

Ch. 8 – Qiqi (p. 93-104) Haoyou is a circus flyer, wearing a red silk suit. Mipeng hands him his Little Dog Wu (stuffed toy) from baby days, for good luck. He is dubbed “Bird Boy.”

Ch. 9 – Translation for Beginners (p.105-125) Haoyou travels with the circus, flying at each venue. Mipeng reluctantly joins him as a medium. She “translates” for the spirits that Haoyou meets in the sky. Villagers pay well for advice from their ancestors. Haoyou & Mipeng are a huge success. Ch. 10 – The Paddy (p. 126-140) A 2 year old child goes missing. Haoyou gets the Chinese dwarf, juggler and dancer to help. They go to the high monastery hill and launch Haoyou on the kite. Haoyou finds the toddler, Khutulun. He purposely crashes his kite into the rice paddy to save her & breaks his shoulder.

Portion of Text Ch. 11 – A Patch of Dark (p. 141-156) The landing in the paddy leaves Haoyou with a spot in his eye that will not go away. The circus enters Dadu, a great city. There, Haoyou flies again after a long illness and sees a bright light he decides is his father’s spirit. Ch. 12 – Duty (p. 157-173) Great-uncle Bo and Auntie Mo come to the circus and demand Haoyou’s wages. Haoyou bargains with his father’s spirit. He will give Uncle Bo the money if his father appears. On his next flight he sees his father. Ch. 13 – About Face (p. 174-184) Haoyou discusses obedience with Miao. Because of the discussion, Miao decides not to go on to Xanadu and the Khan. But, outriders come from the Khan and summon them before they can turn back. Ch. 14 – The Mighty Khan (p. 185-196) The Khan’s rider’s force the circus to go to his camp to perform. When Haoyou is about to fly, Miao reveals that he

Portion of Text Ch. 16 - Fall from Grace (p. 212-223) Uncle Bo bets that Haoyou’s kite can stay in the air longer than one flown by a Mongol boy. The other boy starts attacking him and crashes into a tree. The Chinese and Mongol ground crews start fighting; they let go of the kite ropes. Haoyou fearful for his life brings the kite down into a cart of earth. The Khan wants Haoyou dead for defiling holy places. Ch. 17 - Loyalty and Betrayal (p. 224-240) When Haoyou is ordered to death, his friends explain to the Khan that the spirits had sent him to the altar of Khan’s ancestors. The Khan decides he can use a flying spy in his army. Haoyou sees a doctor who tells him he could lose his sight if he flies again. He flees with his aunt and uncle while Mipeng stays with Maio. On the journey, Haoyou tells his aunt and uncle who Maio really is, they in turn, turn back to tell the khan. Ch. 18 - The carpet (p. 241-250) Bo threatens to take over the Jade Circus. Miao turns his back on Bo and confronts the

Portion of Text Ch. 21 - Fingers (p. 282-291) Haoyou sees Di Chou come off a ship and knows Di Chou will want to kill him. Houyou holds him off by betting all his earnings against his life. He loses and bets Uncle Bo’s house, loses again and bets his mother. Di Chou wins all. Ch. 22 - Family (p. 292-307) Di Chou goes to Uncle Bo’s house to collect his winnings. However, Haoyou has informed the drinking den and warehouse debt collectors to collect from Di Chou. Di Chou is beaten by the debt collectors. Uncle Bo and Auntie Mo return. Mipeng also shows up and tells them she is pregnant and married. Uncle Bo nearly strangles her until Haoyou says he will earn money by flying again. Haoyou, his mother and sister, cousin and aunt all leave in the night and set sail with Maio and the Jade circus.
