2013 Tim Hortons Roar of the Rings – Morning Roar

Sweeting, Martin among the unbeaten JIM MORRIS The Morning Roar Just over 8,800 kilometres separates Winnipeg from Sochi. That journey has become even longer for several Canadian curling teams with Olympic aspirations. A day of near misses and blown chances left four teams undefeated and pushed several others to the brink during Monday’s play at the 2013 Tim Hortons Roar of the Rings Canadian Curling Trials, presented by Monsanto. In the evening’s marque match, Val Sweeting of Vegreville, Alta., remained the lone women’s team with an unblemished record after defeating Winnipeg’s Jennifer Jones 9-6. It was a toe-to-toe match that hinged when Jones’s last shot slid through the house in the seventh end, giving Sweeting a steal of four points and an 8-4 lead. Jones came up light on her final shot of the next end to give Sweeting another point. “I don’t think the scoreboard really dictated what was happening out there,” said Sweeting, who improved her record to 3-0. “Even when you get a lead like, the teams are so good. You have to be careful.” Defending Olympic champion Kevin Martin of Edmonton, Brier champion Brad Jacobs of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., and John Morris, who has hooked up with Jim Cotter’s B.C. rink, all won their afternoon games to remain undefeated on the men’s side. Sweeting had to battle her way through the pre-trials in Kitchener and came to Winnipeg as another face in the crowd. Few people gave her a chance at winning an Olympic berth but after two days of play she has beaten a former world champion in Jones and Rachel Homan, the defending Hearts champion. “We are 3-0 but there’s a lot of week left,” said the 26-year-old service delivery agent. “We don’t have a playoff spot yet or anything like that. We are still taking it one game at a time, just trying to stay tough out there.” Jones said a couple of bad shots cost her control of the game. “We let one slip away tonight,” she said. “Live and learn.” It other games Homan came up short on a last-rock draw, allowing Chelsea Carey of Winnipeg a 9-8 victory. Heather Nedohin of Edmonton earned her first win of the trials by beating Sherry Middaugh of Victoria Harbour, Ont., 6-3 while Stefanie Lawton of Saskatoon defeated Renee Sonnenberg of Grande Prairie, Alta., 8-6. Jones and Carey both have 2-1 records. Homan, Nedohin, Middaugh, Lawton and Sonnenberg are all 1-2. A frustrated Homan said she probably can’t afford another loss. “I don’t think anybody can,” she said. “We learned from that and will move on to the next game.” Nedohin plays Sweeting on Tuesday. The two rinks practise together in Edmonton. “They are a great dynamic team,” said Nedohin. “She’s very talented.” During the afternoon draw Martin defeated Winnipeg’s Jeff Stoughton 6-5, Jacobs beat Mike McEwen of Winnipeg 7-5 and Morris downed Kevin Koe of Calgary 6-4. Glenn Howard of Tiny, Ont., earned his first victory of the trials with a 9-5 win over Toronto’s John Epping. Both teams are 1-1. McEwen, Stoughton and Koe are all 0-2. Martin held a comfortable 5-2 lead after six ends but Stoughton fought back with three in the ninth. That forced Martin to draw the four-foot for the victory.

Kevin Martin

“You’re never safe,” said Martin, a three-time Olympian. “It’s just a battle every game. You take the wins when you can and keep going. You can’t worry about the last game.” Most skips predicted a rink would need at least a 5-2 record to make the playoffs. With that in mind Stoughton knows his back is against the wall. “It’s not where we want to be after two games,” said the former world champion. Koe led 4-2 after six ends but Morris scored two in the seventh, one in nine, then stole a point in the tenth. “We kind of let that one get away,” sighed Koe, the 2010 world champion. “We have to start playing better or else it won’t matter.” Howard scored three points in the first end then coasted to the win over Epping. It was just his second game of the week but

Howard considered it a must win. “You get to three (loses) and you’re praying at that point,” said the two-time Brier champion. “You get to the two-loss record, you are on the bubble. “I’m not convinced three loses will make it in. You come out of the gate and lose a game (and) you’re sort of against the wall.” The women’s morning draw saw two games go to extra ends. Middaugh let a victory slip through her hands when she missed a last-rock takeout to allow Jones to steal a deuce and a 9-7 win. Carey scored a pair in the 10th, then stole three more in the extra end for a 8-5 win over Nedohin. In the other morning games Homan scored three in the fourth, then picked up four in the eighth for an 8-2 win over Sonnenberg while Sweeting defeated Lawton 8-6. CONTINUED N PAGE 3

CONTINUED FROM 2 Jones knew she had dodged a bullet against Middaugh. “It was a real hard-fought battle,” she said. “The girls hung in there and we found a way to win that game, which you are going to need this week. “It’s a lot easier on the nerves to not play 10 ends. But if you have to battle and really fight back in a game it builds a lot of character and gives you some confidence.” Middaugh was left shaking her head over the one that got away. “The disappointing thing is we curled really well,” she said. “We have to take the positives out of that game and go forward. “The hard thing is they are not going to get any easier. I know we will try to put that one away but it’s going to be one we are going to look back on.” Carey heaved a sigh of relief after beating Nedohin. “I wasn’t sure it was going to go that way,” she said. “We were getting no breaks. It was one of those games early on, “We felt like we were owed a break and certainly got it.” Nedohin said she had her chances. “I liked the way our team played,” she said. “We had an opportunity to win. Unfortunately we missed it. “We have to regroup. It’s a little bit frustrating.”

Nedohin jumps on Sochi opportunity Sometimes opportunity knocks. Other times the chance to fulfill a dream comes with a telephone call. D av i d Ne d o h i n with had pretty much given up hope of playing at the Olympics. The veteran orris third had won three M world champions Jim throwing last rocks for Randy Ferbey’s powerhouse Edmonton rink, but a trip to the five-ring circus had always eluded him. Nedohin stepped away from the game for four years. He was happy spending time at his Sherwood Park, Alta., home with his two daughters, keeping an eye on his business, supporting wife Heather Nedohin as she curled. Things changed one day last spring when Nedohin picked up the telephone and Marc Kennedy was on the other end. Kennedy asked if Nedohin was interested in replacing the departed John Morris on Kevin Martin’s team. Nedohin’s plans for this week in Winnipeg underwent a drastic change. “It was an entirely different focus and change of mind frame,” Nedohin said during a break at the Tim Hortons Roar of the Rings Canadian Curling Trials. “I was really thinking I would be up in one of those boxes cheering Heather on for a week. When everything kind of sorted itself out, and I had an opportunity to play for this team, it was incredible.” Any hesitation Nedohin had was outweighed by the chance to book a ticket to Sochi with Martin, a three-time Olympian who won the curling gold medal at the 2010 Vancouver Game CONTINUED ON PAGE 5

Nedohin household sharing Russian dreams CONTINUED FROM PAGE 4 “I am here to be part of a team that has done really well in this event in the past and hopefully represent Canada at the Olympics,” he said. “That is the one and only goal.” For anyone following curling in Alberta, or fans in the rest of the country, seeing Nedohin on the same team as Martin is a bit like Wayne Gretzky playing for the Calgary Flames or Alberta Premier Alison Redford suddenly deciding to join the Green Party. The heated battles the Martin and Ferbey rinks had on the ice spilled over into a dislike between the teams when their games were over. “That stuff was a long time ago,” said the 39-year-old Nedohin, who was born in Winnipeg. “When we played against each other for so many years, two teams that were that good playing out of the same city, just butting heads weekend after weekend, there was an incredibly strong rivalry that existed. There also was an incredible amount of respect for the curling talent of each other.” Martin said any hard feelings that might have existed have been erased as the team concentrates on its pursuit of the Olympics. “When Dave and Randy played together they didn’t say much,” said Martin, a silver medallist at the 2002 Winter Games. “He (Dave) doesn’t say much. He goes about his business. “He’s really easy going off the ice. That part has been really simple.” We are saving customers

Before making his final decision to join Martin, Nedohin called Ferbey. His old skip told him he would be stupid not to accept. Nedohin and Ferbey combined with Scott Pfeifer and Marcel Rocque to win four Brier titles in five years. Nedohin played third, using his technically perfect delivery to toss final rocks. With Martin, Nedohin is making the adjustment to someone else having the game in their hands. “As a skip you know you are the last line of defence,” he said. “You know if you miss shots it’s going to impact the scoreboard. “I have Kevin behind me who is the greatest shot-maker in the game. That’s kind of reassuring to know.” So far the transition seems to have worked. Martin’s team is currently second on the World Curling Tour in money earned with over $59,000. Martin said Nedohin has allowed the rink to change its style. “He brings a soft touch,” said Martin. “The draws, the hack, the boards. The stuff he is really good at. “What it’s done is we’ve played a lot more aggressively, a lot more big ends than what we used to have.” Some kinks still need to be worked out. “The tough part is just trying to figure out where to put the broom for each other,” said Martin. “Under pressure people have tendencies. We needed to figure those tendencies out so we played an awful lost this fall. It’s been good.” Nedohin is comfortable with his new role.

“I make sure I go after my shots and really try to put him in good positions,” he said. “I hate leaving Kevin in a bad position. There is nothing that feels worse than that. “At the end of the day you are out there to play as good as you can regardless of the position you are in.” As excited as Nedohin was about returning to the game, he had some anxieties over the problems it could cause for the family. “My first reaction was you have to,” said wife Heather. “My second reaction was how are going to do this. “We work together. Our family comes first. David did a big thing by stepping back and letting me play a little bit more. This was a huge opportunity for him.” David Nedohin said his parents have stepped up to help look after the s children. Friends in the community have also been supportive. “There are huge sacrifices at home but there’s also a huge support network from my parents and Heather’s aunts,” he said. Heather Nedohin, who won the 2012 Scotties Tournament of Hearts, is skipping her own rink at the trials. That creates the chance husband and wife could be making the trip to Russia. “We haven’t really talked about it a whole bunch,” said David. “We’ve had to plan a little bit in case that happens. “If and when . . . then we can really start to enjoy it.” Sometimes adding a new part into a smoothly operating machine can cause a malfunction. So far, Nedohin and Martin are rolling right along.

(8-5, Team Saskatchewan third [Hailey Surik]) OLYMPIC MEMORIES: My favourite Olympic memory is watching the curling in 2010. I was 22, just out of Juniors, and had watched a couple games live at the 2009 Trials in Edmonton. To be able to watch our Canadian representatives excel in Vancouver was very motivating. My favourite Olympian is Sandra Shmirler, she accomplished so much at such a young age and was a great ambassador for the sport of curling. It would be an honour and dream come true to wear the maple leaf in Sochi and represent this country. THIRD: Joanne Courtney (throws third rocks) AGE: 24 (March 7, 1989, Edmonton) LIVES: Edmonton FAMILY: Husband Mark YEARS CURLED: 17 OCCUPATION: Registered Nurse (Alberta Health Services) DELIVERS: Right-handed HIGHLIGHTS: Capital One Road to the Roar Pre-Trials 2013 at Kitchener (won B qualifier, as third for skip Val Sweeting, to advance to Trials) M&M Meat Shops Canadian Junior Women’s Championship 2007 at St. Catharines, Ont. (4-2, fourth place, University of Alberta second) OLYMPIC MEMORIES: My favourite Olympic moment is when Alexandre Bilodeau won the first gold medal on Canadian soil in 2010. His brother’s celebration brought tears to my eyes. I also loved all the coverage of the crowds in Vancouver – the energy was unbelievable. Sandra Schmirler is my favourite Olympian. I had just started curling when she won gold in Nagano – she was an incredible ambassador for the sport. Wearing the maple leaf in Sochi would be a dream come true. SECOND (VICE-SKIP): Dana Ferguson AGE: 26 (February 25, 1987, St. Albert, Alta.) LIVES: Morinville, Alta. FAMILY: Single

(4-2, fourth place, University of Alberta alternate) OLYMPIC MEMORIES: For me I don’t have one specific Olympic memory or favorite Olympian but I have always had a strong connection with sport. I love many sports and it doesn’t matter what sport it is the competition that I enjoy. During the Olympics whether it is Winter or Summer I can’t get enough. But what I enjoy the most is watching Canadian athletes win and listening to “Oh Canada” after they win has always struck deep emotions within me. I am pretty sure I get a little teary every time I hear the song and see the athletes face. They look proud of their accomplishments and how they have represented their country and all of the people who have supported them along the way. So for me I think the opportunity to represent my country and have the chance to win a medal and hear the national anthem is something I have always wanted for as long as I can remember.

LIVES: Edmonton FAMILY: Single YEARS CURLED: 17 O CCUPATION: Teacher (Black G old Regional Schools) DELIVERS: Right HIGHLIGHTS: Capital One Road to the Roar Pre-Trials 2013 at Kitchener (won B qualifier, as lead for skip Val Sweeting, to advance to Trials) Canadian Mixed Championship 2009 at Iqaluit (3-8, Team Alberta lead [Tom Appelman]) CIS-CCA Canadian University Championships 2010 at Edmonton (4-2, University of Alberta lead); 2009 at Montreal (2-3, University of Alberta lead); 2008 at Guelph, Ont. (4-2, fourth place, University of Alberta lead). ALTERNATE: Amber Holland OLYMPIC MEMORIES: Sandra Schmirler’s team winning the Olympic Gold would be one of my favourite memory – not just because they won and they are from my home province, but also because I remember exactly where I was early that morning. (At a friend’s place in Moose Jaw, Sask., after her house party and I made all the end-of-night party stragglers watch the curling game with me who weren’t really curling fans at all). The excitement of the 2010 Canadian Hockey team winning the gold when Crosby scored is probably the most recent memory etched in my brain. All the Canadians

who have represented Canada at the Olympics would be my favourite Olympian curlers – how could you really pick one??. My favourite non-curling Olympian would be Catriona Lemay-Doan – great athlete, great ambassador for multi-sport games and a fellow Saskatchewanite. To wear the Maple Leaf in Sochi would be awe inspiring, not only because I would get to do that playing the sport I love, but I would also be part of a large Canadian team of so many talented athletes wanting to do well representing the country we love. COACH: Taina Smiley OLYMPIC MEMORIES: There are so many things I love about the Olympic Games: watching the streams of athletes at the opening ceremonies; cheering for our Canadian athletes, or sometimes just the ‘under dog’; crying at the medal ceremonies when they play ‘Oh, Canada’ . I am always riveted to the stories behind the athletes - where they came from, and what it took to get there. I still tear up thinking about Joannie Rochette skating her heart out after her Mom died during the 2010 Olympics. My favourite curling memory is from Team Schmirler’s win in Nagano. The expressions on their faces during the final seconds are burned into my memory. Wearing the maple leaf, watching my team play in Sochi would be a dream come true! I’m proud of them every day for their hard-work, dedication, and determination - seeing them achieve their goal would be the “cherry on top”.

2013 Tim Hortons Roar of the Rings – Morning Roar

Making licence plates... in a good way BY MORNING ROAR STAFF The teams competing at this week’s Tim Hortons Roar of the Rings are focused on winning the chance to represent Canada at February’s Olympics in Russia. CurlManitoba, along with the province, has unveiled a new speciality licence plate which it hopes will help develop young curlers to compete in future Games. “We all know that people who don’t curl still love the sport and can support our fund,” Kim Warburton, CurlManitoba’s vice-president, said Monday. The CurlManitoba licence plate, which will be administrated by Manitoba Public Insurance, will cost $70. Of that fee, $30 will go toward the CurlManitoba Curling For Life Endowment Fund. “The endowment fund was set up to help grow the sport long term,” said Warburton. “We know we need to have money for marketing the sport, growing the sport and developing programs for the sport.” Andrew Swan, minister responsible for Manitoba Public Insurance, said the licence plates, which will go on sale Monday, allow residents to show their love of the sport. “Curlers are passionate about the game and this new speciality plate will give them the chance to show off that love to their fellow motorists,” he said.

FANS of the

DAY

Fans are Game for a

Great Time!

The athletes in the Tim Hortons Roar of the Rings, presented by Monsanto, put their amazing skills on display Monday during three exciting draws in the MTS Centre. Last night, the fans kept the competitive spirit alive at the RBC Convention Centre. It was a change of pace in the Patch as the fans gave the bands a break, taking centre-stage to provide the entertainment in skill-testing games. It was called “Minute to Win It” …and with cash prizes up for grabs, the competition was fierce! The music returns tonight when the No Direction Band sets the tone for another great night of entertainment.

Meet The Teams • ReneÉ Sonnenberg • GPCC • Grande Prairie SKIP: Renée Sonnenberg AGE: 42 (March 22, 1971, Edmonton) LIVES: Grande Prairie, Alta. (4-7, Team Alberta skip); 1999 at Charlottetown (5-6, Team Alberta skip) Capital One Canada Cup 2006 at Kamloops, B.C. (4-3, third place, skip); 2004 at Kamloops, B.C. (1-3, skip) Canadian Mixed Championship 2001 at Weyburn, Sask. (7-5, Team Alberta third [Kurt Balderston]) M&M Meat Shops Canadian Junior Women’s Championship 1990 at Sudbury, Ont. (4-6, Team Alberta skip); 1989 at Winnipeg (7-3, bronze medal, Team Alberta skip). Olympic Memories: The Olympic memory that stands out for me the most is when I first arrived in the athlete village in Vancouver and the Canadian Women’s Hockey Team was jogging down the street. They looked like a true force to be reckoned with and are amazing athletes. My fondest curling Olympic memory is when I saw team Kevin Martin before the gold medal game in Vancouver. John and Ben were relaxed and Kevin and Marc were super intense. It was amazing to see how they were a complete unit when they hit the ice. To wear the maple leaf on my back in Sochi would a real honour. To be part of the Canadian Olympic team would be wonderful. To compete at the highest international level is the pinnacle of any sport and it would be exhilarating. THIRD: Lawnie MacDonald AGE: 39 (Nov. 26, 1974, Bow Island, Alta.) LIVES: St. Albert, Alta. FAMILY: Husband Blake; son Spencer (9), daughter Bronwyn (7) YEARS CURLED: 29 OCCUPATION: Mom DELIVERS: Right-handed HIGHLIGHTS: Capital One Road to the Roar Pre-Trials 2013 at Kitchener (won A qualifier, as third for Renée Sonnenberg, to advance to Trials) Scotties Tournament of Hearts 2002 at Brandon, Man. (1-3, Team Nedohin third) Canadian Mixed Championship 2000 at Lethbridge, Alta. (10-3, gold medal, Team Alberta lead [Kevin Koe]) M&M Meat Shops Canadian Junior Women’s Championship 1994 at Truro, N.S. (6-5, Team Alberta second [Crystal Webster]) OLYMPIC MEMORIES: My fondest Olympic memory is when Pelletier/Sale performed a magnificent long program. They skated a perfect program when they needed to. A true class act. The memory that sticks out for me is when Sandra Schmirler made the in-off against Shannon Kleibrink in the Olympic Trials final for three. If I were to wear the Maple Leaf in Sochi I would be most proud to show my kids that when you set a goal and commit to work at it, you can achieve it.

SECOND: Cary-Anne McTaggart AGE: 27 (June 4, 1986, Grande Prairie, Alta.) LIVES: Milk River, Alta. FAMILY: Husband Layne YEARS CURLED: 19 OCCUPATION: Registered Nurse (Alberta Health Services) DELIVERS: Right-handed HIGHLIGHTS: Capital One Road to the Roar Pre-Trials 2013 at Kitchener (won A qualifier, as second for Renée Sonnenberg, to advance to Trials) M&M Meat Shops Canadian Junior Women’s Championship 2007 at St. Catharines, Ont. (7-5, Team Alberta third [Desirée Owen]); 2005 at Fredericton, N.B. (12-1, silver medal, Team Alberta third [Desirée Owen]); 2003 at Ottawa (11-4, bronze medal, Team Alberta third [Desirée Owen]) OLYMPIC MEMORIES: First of all I just want to make sure you include that I was born and raised in the peace country and moved to Milk River 2 years ago. I got married this summer... Maiden name: Sallows. I’m sure you knew that but just wanted to make sure the GP connection was mentioned. My fondest Olympics memory: I love watching all sports in the summer and winter Olympics. My favourite is watching medal games, races etc., and seeing the celebrations.... The pure joy and the big smiles. I love watching the athlete celebrations, big smiles and tears of joy that accompany a win, accomplished goal, or receiving of a medal are definitely my favourite parts of the Olympics. For curling.... Cheryl Bernard comes to mind. Her radiating smile when she made her shot to win the Roar gives me goose bumps... No matter how many times I see it! Her emotion on the podium was awesome to see, I strive to have those feelings that she was experiencing during those times. Genuine Canadian pride & pure happiness. What it would mean to wear the maple leaf in Sochi: I don’t think this feeling can be described by somebody who has not had the privilege to wear the maple leaf. For me, I would feel complete joy and accomplishment. It would be a great honor to wear the maple leaf and represent our great country. This would definitely be a career highlight, I don’t think any other accomplishment or championship could ever measure up. The Olympics are the pinnacle of sport, being able to wear the Canadian maple leaf for a sport that I have loved and has brought me so much joy and great memories would be epic. LEAD: Rona Pasika AGE: 37 (June 18, 1976, Edmonton) LIVES: Sherwood Park, Alta. FAMILY: Husband Trevor; daughter Cassie (7),

daughter Brynn (5) YEARS CURLED: 27 OCCUPATION: Sales (McGregor Advertising Specialties Inc.) DELIVERS: Right-handed HIGHLIGHTS: Capital One Road to the Roar Pre-Trials 2013 at Kitchener (won A qualifier, as lead for Renée Sonnenberg, to advance to Trials) Scotties Tournament of Hearts 2000 at Prince George, B.C. (6-5, Team Alberta lead [Heather Nedohin]); 1999 at Charlottetown (9-5, silver medal, Team Canada alternate [Cathy King]); 1998 at Regina (12-1, gold medal, Team Alberta alternate [Cathy King]) Ford World Women’s Championship 1998 at Kamloops, B.C. (7-4, bronze medal, Team Canada alternate [Cathy King]) Capital One Canada Cup 2003 at Kamloops, B.C. (1-3, Team Nedohin lead). OLYMPIC MEMORIES: My fondest Olympic memory was attending the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. It was amazing to feel the energy and electricity surrounding the event. Further to that, my husband and I were in the stands with my brother and nephew watching a round robin curling game. It was Kevin Martin’s Team Canada vs. David Murdoch Great Britain Team. All of a sudden the entire crowd broke out in a chorus of O’ Canada - it was absolutely incredible! I was covered in goose bumps just being in the crowd. It was a sporting moment I will never forget. The opportunity to wear the maple leaf and represent Canada in Sochi would be completely unreal. The Olympics are the pinnacle of sport and every athlete dreams about it. I take great pride that we will be competing in these Canadian Olympic Trials and am enjoying my visions of continuing this journey of competing in Sochi along with my best friends. ALTERNATE: Desirée Owen OLYMPIC MEMORIES: My fondest Olympic memory was actually at the last Winter Olympics in Vancouver 2010. When I think about this athlete and what she accomplished it brings chills over my whole body. Joannnie Rochette competed in Vancouver in figure skating. She experienced extreme hardship when her mother had pass away from a heart attack when she arrived to Vancouver to watch her daughter compete. Under extreme heart ache Joannie continued to compete for her Canadian country and won the bronze medal for figure skating. I will always remember her last performance. It was unreal to watch and to see such determination and strength in an athlete. I just remember feeling her heart and soul right through the TV and it literally felt like you were there watching. As for how much strength and determination Joannie showed she to this day is my favourite Olympic athlete. As for a Curling Olympic athlete I would have to say Cheryl Bernard. To wear the Canadian Olympic leaf on my back would be such an honour. I am so proud to be a Canadian and to play a sport that I truly love. I think it’s every athletes dream is to wear their country on their backs especially in the Olympics. It would truly be a blessing and an experience that you would never want to end. COACH: Kurt Balderston My favourite Olympic memory is Crosby’s goal in overtime at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. The curling memory that stands out for me was the grace Cheryl and her team showed in losing the gold medal in an extra end. To represent Canada to the Olympics would be an amazing experience and I would be so happy for the girls having the discipline to reach their goals.
