(Short communication)

Th e 380 indue d and four spontan ous c rif rum (c r ) mutants analys d b long to 44 loci (Fig. 1). Th e loci c with 52 all les, q with 49 alleles, u with 41 allel es, i with 23 alleles, and j with 20 all 1 s ar th most mutable. Th 93 mutant in due d by spars ly ionizing radiations ar distribut d rather ev nly among the loci. The mutant spectrum obtain d with 81 thy1 n imin indue d mutants is similar to that obtain d with spars ly ionizing radiations The 53 mutants induced by densily ionizing radiations and th 105 sulphonate -indue d mutants giv a skew d locus distribution . About 30% of the mutants obtain e d with densily ionizing radiations ar locat d at locus i. The sulphonat s act pr f r ntially on th loci c, q and u , wh r 56% of the sulphonate-induc e d mutants ar located. If the mutants of individual loci are consid r d, significant sp cificiiies m rg , . g. at locus i 6 5% have been induced by densily ionizing radiations; at locus u 56% and at locus c 42% hav b n indue d with sulphonates. Of the 44 eceriferum loci eleven give rise to mutants with bright green spikes, eight produce mutants with glossy 1 aves, and s v n, mutants with bright gre n leaf sheaths and spikes . The other loci upon mutation give rise to mutants with seven other typ s of organ sp cific d f cts in wax coating (Fig. 2). The mutant cer-j 59 with glossy leaves has on its leaf blades at heading time 20% less ether extractable wax than the wild typ . The mutant wax contains very littl of the long-chained primary alcohols - a major constituent of the leaf wax. This results in thin and f w wax plat s. From the bright gre n 1 af sheaths of the mutant cer-c36, 70% less wax is ether extracted than from the wild type. The mutant wax lacks the long - chained k tones which are th predominant components of the wax rods from barley leaf sheaths. This indicates that the eceriferum loci control different components of the organ specific wax coating.
