The Solemnity of Pentecost concludes our Easter season. What this means is that the Easter candle will no longer be lit for our liturgies, except for Baptisms and Funerals, and the color of our environment including the vestments will no longer be white, but rather green to indicate “ordinary time.” Even though our Easter season has come to an end, we continually celebrate and live the Easter mysteries everyday of our lives. The Solemnity of Pentecost celebrates the “birthday of the Church.” We hear from the Acts of the Apostles, in our first reading today, how the Holy Spirit came down upon the apostles. There was a “noise, like a strong driving wind that filled the entire house” in which we find the apostles. Then, as the reading describes, “tongues as of fire, parted and came to rest upon” each of the apostles. “And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues, as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim.” This group of fear-filled and timid individuals now become changed to a community of faith-filled and fearless witnesses for Christ. The Catholic Church was born that first Pentecost as the promised Advocate, the Paraclete, filled the lives of the apostles and dramatically changed them. This same gift of the Holy Spirit continues in the life of the Catholic Church today and can be seen in the lives of so many people who witness to their faith in what they say and do. May all of us be open to this gift in our lives as it too will make dramatic changes in all of us. We have had two major changes in the staff here at St. Peter Church. Jill Anderson is moving to Springfield and in her place we have hired Carolyn Tipton as our new secretary/administrative assistant. The second change is the retirement of Marty Venvertloh. After 25 years of service to this parish, Marty has decided to enjoy time with family. In Marty’s place, we have hired Kathy Harman as our new parish nurse. I ask all of you to make sure that you help these new people feel at home in their new surroundings. Monday, May 27th, is Memorial Day. It is custom here in Quincy to celebrate only one Mass that day and that Mass is at Calvary Cemetery beginning at 9:30 a.m. We ask you to bring your lawn chairs or blankets for seating during our Mass. It is also a custom to contribute to the support of our Catholic cemeteries here in Quincy. I know that people have contributed to the perpetual care of their individual graves and the monies contributed do pay for this care. But what we are finding is that we are in need to make some improvements to our cemetery from roads to tree removal and planting. These extra monies are not covered in the perpetual fund. So we have included a “calvary cemetery” envelope in your parish envelopes and we ask you to help us make some improvements to all of our cemeteries. As you should note, these envelopes should have been printed, “Catholic Cemeteries of Quincy” instead of the ones received. Please use these envelopes and put them in the collection basket between now and Memorial Day. Thank you! 2

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, May 1, 2013 The Catholic Communication Campaign (CCC) supports projects throughout the world that encourage use of new media as a tool for the New Evangelization. The collection for CCC plays a role in evangelization by providing grants for social media sites, podcasts, print media, radio and television projects that spread the Good News. Here is an example of how your contributions to the CCC make a difference: The Catholic Near East Welfare Association (CNEWA) prepared an immersion program in the Middle East for Catholic journalists from the United States and Canada. By experiencing firsthand the cares and concerns of the Middle East’s Christian community, Catholic media professionals were able to stimulate the growth of quality news coverage of the Middle East from a Catholic perspective. Instead of sitting down for a presentation on the flight of Christians out of Palestine, the group experienced the harsh reality lived by the refugees at a Palestinian refugee camp near Beirut. With support from CCC, the immersion program helps improve the writing of Catholic journalists while at the same time strengthening the roots of their personal Catholic faith. CCC makes it possible for each of us to use this burgeoning new technology to deepen our own faith, whether through podcasts of the daily readings, Catholic television and radio broadcasts, or the ever-expanding social networking realm. The collection for the Catholic Communication Campaign is how the Good News gets around − to you. Please support this important work in the upcoming collection, which will be held the weekend of May 25-26 in our diocese. Your support is needed to make the collection successful. Remember, half of the proceeds from this collection stay here to support our local communication efforts. Sincerely yours in Christ,

WEEKLY COLLECTION Fr. Leo’s column contin…. On Sunday, May 26th, Sr. JoAnn, our 6th grade teacher at St. Peter School, will be celebrating her Golden Jubilee as a School Sister of Notre Dame. Since she continues in a teaching ministry here at St. Peter, we will be having a special reception for her in the cafeteria after the 9:30 a.m. Mass on that Sunday. I ask all of her former students, as well as parents of these students, to come and congratulate her on her 50 years of service to the Church as a religious sister. Congratulations to the graduating class of Quincy Notre Dame! These fine young men and women will be graduating from QND this Sunday, May 19th, at 1:00 p.m. at QND. Our prayers and support are with these young men and women as they conclude an important step in their lives only to begin another. I remind you of the challenge I made with you to continue to be the stewards of this parish family. There will be no special collection for our Church/gym roofs as I hope and pray that parishioners will step up their weekly giving to help in this project. We have a little less than $90,000 for this project. (cost $400,000) ON THE LIGHTER SIDE: An adorable little girl walked into a pet shop and asked, “do you have any rabbits here?” “I do,” answered the clerk, and leaning down to her eye level she asked, “did you want a white rabbit, or would you rather have a soft fuzzy black rabbit.” The little girl shrugged and replied, “I don’t think my python really cares.”

The 2013 "EVERYBODY WINS" Mega Raffle MEGA EVENT will be held on Saturday, June 1st, at the St. Anthony Parish Grounds, from 5 p.m. - Midnight. The Mega Raffle Drawings will begin at 6:30 p.m. with the drawing of the 80th Prize and continue throughout the evening until the top three prize drawings take place between 9:30 and 10 p.m. We would like to make the 2013 Mega Event the biggest and best yet, and we need your help. Parish & School-Sponsored Organizations (i.e., Altar & Rosary Society, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, GSA, Home & School, Ladies Society, Men's Club, PTO, Parish Right-to-Life Committee, Social Justice Committee, etc.) at Blessed Sacrament, St. Anthony/St. Dominic, St. Francis, and St. Peter are invited and encouraged to sponsor a booth (e.g., Bingo, desserts/ bake sale, various games for children and adults such as bean bag, duck pond, I Dood It, etc.). There is no fee to reserve a booth at the 2013 MEGA EVENT, and all money raised at an organization's booth is retained by the sponsoring organization. Booths and electricity for your booth, if needed, will be provided at no charge. Booths will be expected to be open from 5-10 p.m. that evening. Approximately 3,000 people attended last year's MEGA EVENT, and we anticipate a similarly large crowd this year.
