The Time in which Shivaji Maharaj lived is called MEDIEVAL Period.

[Maharashtra Before Shivaji]

In this period Monarchy or Rule of Kings prevailed.Instead of welfare of subjects, many of the kings pursued their own pleasures and enjoyments.

But some kings are famous in history for their benevolent rule i.e. they were looking after the welfare of their subjects.

Benevolent rulers :Moghul Emperor Akbar in the North,

Emperor Krishnadevraya of Vijaynagar and Shivaji Maharaj of Maharashtra.

Shivaji Maharaj established Swaraj in Maharashtra.

Nearly 400 Years before Shivaji Maharaj, Maharashtra was not free. Largly it was ruled by two Sultans:-

Nizamshah of Ahmadnagar and Adilshah of Bijapur.

These two were sworn enemies of each other.

In Maharashtra there were many Watandars like Deshmukhs and Deshpandes who owned Jagirs.They loved only their Jagirs and not their country.

Constant fightings between sultans as well Watandars making people suffered and harassed.

could not get enough to eat.

Miseries of the people in Maharashtra

Not safe even in their own homes.

Not able to celebrate festivals or worship their gods openly and freely.

Because of all this, misrule prevailed everywhere. People were unhappy and tired of this oppression. Shivaji Maharaj saw all this and to bring happiness to the people ,he undertook the noble task of establishing Swaraj in Maharashtra.
