The Wayne State College Wrestling Club faced tough competition at the Dakota Wesleyan Open this  weekend.   The Open saw competition from eighteen different schools including NAIA champions Grand View  College, Division II schools and a college from Canada.   Although the competition looked strong, sophomore Matthew DeGarmo pulled out a 5th place finish.  DeGarmo started the day off with three consecutive wins, including a defeat over Dakota Wesleyan  University’s All‐American alumni in the quarter finals. DeGarmo had to default to end the day due to a  knee injury.   “DeGarmo had three great rounds to reach the semifinals, then a slight knee sprain forced him to drop  out,” Head Coach Greg Vander Weil said.   There were two other WSC wrestlers that won on the day, junior Jon Williams and senior Jon Mullen.   Jon Williams went 3‐2 on the day, one match shy of placing. He lost the first round of the 174‐pound  weight class but came back to take three straight wins before his final loss of the day. Williams is  currently ranked 6th in the National Collegiate Wrestling Association’s Top 10.   Although only three out of the twelve wrestlers won on Saturday, Vander Weil said good things are  noticeable each week. One of the things the team needs to continue doing is keeping the young players  positive and encouraged.   “It’s hard to start over as freshman again,” Vander Weil said. “They want to do better but they know  they can’t do it over night.”   Vander Weil said the new guys are putting in quality mat time and progressing very well.   “Strength and perseverance will be key to their success,” Vander Weil said.   Wayne State hits the road again this weekend, traveling to Kearney for the University of Nebraska‐ Kearney Open on Saturday. The competition will be tough again as the Open will have approximately 40  teams and split in two divisions.
