Bollywood’s Genelia was replaced in the Fanta ad by Tollywood’s current crown princess Tamanna. Even for the latest Thums Up ad, the company has chosen lesser known and younger names over Akshay Kumar. This trend seems to be catching on in the media world. The main reason for hiring a brand ambassador is to utilise a celebrity’s face value, fan base and popularity to motivate and inspire customers to go for that particular brand, said Rahul Mitra, CEO, BransmithIndia, which handles several star endorsements. “But in today’s world of social media marketing and multiple brand options, the consumer rules the roost. Once the brand pull is created, even a cheaper option can work. Also with actors and celebrities endorsing multiple products, the stars face the problem of overexposure that may lead to a disconnect putting brand marketers in a fix. Hence arises the need for going in for a fresher option,” Mitra added. Mayank Bhadoria, business development manager, ArtBeat, talks about Thums Up ad in which Mahesh Babu has replaced Akshay Kumar. “Nowadays, ads are not made to show or prove how much money you have or who you can afford. Rom-com is a genre that has been done to death. And a genre that the 22-year-old filmmaker leading Vinoothna Geetha, had never dabbled into. But he won the competition courtesy a unique twist to the tale that his team dished out. It’s only engaging cinema that budding film-maker Tharun Bhascker wishes to do. And he did that with great success and satisfaction at the recently concluded 48-Hour-Film-Project as his team won the competition for their seven-minute long Telugu film Anukokunda. Recalling the experience of making a film in just two days, he gushes, “We had to establish the characters, supporting actors, the plot, the climax and everything in just seven minutes. That was very challenging.” Not just that, he adds, “Our team of 12 was doing a film on romance for the first time.

It’s been a long hard struggle for city artist Bairu Raghuram. The wait for recognisition finally came to an end this year when he was awarded the Kalaratna award by the state government for his paintings and artworks. And this honour for the artist is not only a victory for himself, but is a win for the concept of simple and accessible art. “My art works are simple as I want to convery a message that is direct and easy to understand,” he asserts. Hyderabad girl Grace Nethala, who recently worked as a post-production assistant in Horse and Rider, was the lone Indian in the team that worked on the movie, which is an attempt to create awareness about forced child prostitution in India.

I knew Freedom Firm was planning to make a film on child prostitution and was looking forward to it. When he asked if I wanted to work on the film, I immediately agreed,” she said. The film was a great learning experience for the Hyderabad girl. “I didn’t know such things happened in India. The movie changed my views on life,” she added.

Despite a lot of initial detractors, T-20 cricket has managed to prove its mettle and the Indian Premiere League is the most towering testimony to that. Cashing in on this IPL fever, that’s currently going strong in its fifth season, football lovers of the country have come up with a unique twist to their game too. An initiative of Pepsi’s “change the game” campaign, T-20 football, seems to be catching up across the country at a feverish pace. The new format is targeted mainly at amateurs and combines the element of speed that’s become synonymous with T-20 cricket. Says Homi Battiwala, category director of the brand, “The game is played with a team of seven players per side and the time span is only 15 minutes with two 7.5-minute halves and a 5-minute half-time break. So the format is a lot quicker and hence involves a lot of skill. You have to be on your toes every second of the game. Also, the game is

KISS used about 40. While explanatory of KISS’s neediness for bad-ass cred, it is also telling of the Marshall amp’s place in music history. The black box and cursive letters that screamed of every virtue Rock n’ Roll came to stand for. When Jim Marshall passed away on April 5 2012, Nikki Sixx tweeted “R.I.P. Jim Marshall. You were responsible for some of the greatest audio moments in music’s history and 50 % of all our hearing loss.” Incidentally, Marshall himself suffered from some hearing problems. “My right ear is not very good at all,” he said in a 2005 interview to the New Zealand Herald. “And I’d always put it down to when I was playing the top cymbal, but it was probably the brass section in the orchestras I was playing (in the 50s). It happened before I was dealing with Rock n’ Roll.” Almost as if he was nature’s selection to inflict the same upon others, Jim Marshall jumped into business. Drum lessons and a drum shop in London with some guitars and amps to boot. Pete Townshend was soon urging him to create an amp with more power and a rougher tone. Guitarist-electrician Ken Bran and engineer Dudley Craven from EMI were his cohorts. They were unhappy with the first five attempts, but the sixth prototype nailed it. 23 orders on the first day, and loudness had found itself a father. Rock’s elite (and not so) were intoxicated by the potential of greater volume. Soon, the 100 watt came. Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, AC/DC, The Edge and even Noel Gallagher were all drawn like flies to jam. Much like them, many little boys and girls continue to save up for the Marshall Amp and their first shaky steps into the sonic vulgarity of Rock n’ Roll. For the man who made that possible, let's crank it up to 11. Farewell “Father of Loud”, may you journey safe.

Sailesh Bolisetti, who made it to the podium on his debut at the British GT at Oulton Park in England recently, now wants to bag top honours in the prestigious Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft (DTM), a German Touring Car Racing Championship. “I want to be a trendsetter in the country by winning the DTM, an international touring car racing as competitive as the Formula One racing. I will concentrate on practice after the completion of the on-going British GT championship,” Sailesh said. The 23-year-old, a B.Tech graduate in Computer Science, said that he always wanted to participate in motorsport championships since his college days. Diouf arrested after night brawl Doncaster striker El Hadji Diouf was arrested on Sunday on suspicion of violent disorder after he got into brawl involving pals of former team-mate and Queen Park Rangers player Anton Ferdinand.
